Bill Maher talked about how Internet has made it easy for lies and half-truths to be spread, and then discussed the Republican Party’s lack of concern about facts.

Maher said:

Yes, more than ever people today are living a fact free lifestyle, which is great news for the Republican candidates because when they are confronted on their lies now, they just say, “Oh, I see what you’re doing by fact checking me, I just don’t care, because my fans don’t care.”

A couple of years ago we did a piece here where I introduced the term zombie lies, which are Republican talking points that can not be killed despite being disproven time and time again. Things like voter fraud being rampant or tax cuts paying for themselves, or Lindsey Graham just hasn’t met the right girl.

But in a very short time, Republicans have gone from even the zombie lie to just making sh*t up. Ted Cruz says the federal government is going after school districts trying to force them to let boys shower with little girls. Carly Fiorina is one of the new breed of politicians who claim to see things that aren’t there. She said she watched a Planned Parenthood video of “a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain. But that video doesn’t exist unless you subscribe to Nutflix.

And of course, Donald Trump said he saw thousands of Muslim-Americans cheering after the 9/11 attacks. It never happened. But Trump doesn’t deny it, he owns it. He doubles down. He’s like Pinocchio except when he tells a lie, his balls grow bigger.

Folks, this is new. That liars have stopped caring after they caught.

Maher hit on something that some liberals and Democrats refuse to understand. Facts don’t matter to Republicans. It doesn’t matter to a Republican if the facts are on their side. If the facts disagree with the Republican position, they invent new ones.

The reason compromise is so hard to come by in today’s American politics is because there is no basic agreement on reality. The planet is setting records for heat, but Republicans ignore the scientists insist climate change doesn’t exist. Immigration from Mexico has plummeted, but Republicans want to build a wall to keep the Mexicans out. Women get paid less than men, but Republicans argue that there is no pay gap. Tens of millions of people have gotten expanded coverage through the ACA, but Republicans say that there is no health care coverage crisis, and things need to go back to the old way.

Facts simply don’t matter. In Republican economics, tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations magically pay for themselves The numbers don’t add up in any Republican tax plan, but that doesn’t matter.

President Obama and Democrats have been able to win on the issue of raising taxes on the wealthy by making a moral argument about fairness. The Republican Party is completely driven by belief and emotion. The GOP is completely fact-free, which is why Donald Trump is leading their presidential primary. Trump is the embodiment of the fact-free GOP.

Republicans keep losing presidential elections because they aren’t on the same planet as the rest of the country. Fact free works in off year gerrymandered congressional elections, but when it is time to elect a leader to govern the entire country, the cult of fact-free GOP is outnumbered by the rest of us who live in reality.
