The message, ‘peace on Earth, goodwill toward men’ seems lost on many Christians
Every religion revolves around some significant story that is integral to their belief system, and during the holiday season, Christians hold the birth of Christ as the promise of redemption, salvation, and everlasting life as important as the resurrection story. The symbol of the silly virgin birth story is the nativity scene, and as popular as it is to Christians, the Annunciation by angels to shepherds tending their flocks is oft-repeated in song and sermon alike with a message most adherents can recite from memory. However, as important as the message, “peace on Earth, goodwill toward men” is to Christ’s life and teachings, it is lost on a large segment of American Christians.
Over the past year, the most vocal Christian fanatics demonstrated that not only do they oppose the idea of peace on Earth; they have, with their legislative arm, the Republican Party, worked tirelessly to portray “goodwill” as a cardinal sin and miscarriage of justice. However, even though there are Christians who embrace the concept of goodwill, their support of politicians who consider goodwill toward Americans anathema to freedom counters their phony portrayal as followers of Christ. In fact, as their lord and savior said, “by their works you will know them,” and he meant that Christians who actively support policies that deprive human beings of food, shelter, healthcare, and wellbeing is not only a hypocrite, but are living a life contrary to his teaching and the notion of goodwill towards mankind.
After the 2008 general election, and particularly the 2010 midterm elections, Americans learned a nasty lesson about how hardline conservative Christians interpret the bible’s message of goodwill toward anyone. Whether it was the outrageous assertion that healthcare was a privilege reserved for the wealthy, or a perpetual attempt to eliminate social safety nets, or the vicious assault on women’s rights, there were always extremist Christians supporting Republicans protecting the rich at the expense of the needy. Indeed, in the recent election, 47% of Americans supported Romney and Ryan whose idea of goodwill entailed stealing from children, the poor, elderly, and Veterans to enrich the wealthy, and most of their supporters identified themselves as some kind of Christian; but not Jesus Christians.
Over the past week, another example of Christian opposition to the bible message of peace on Earth is the frenzy to put more firearms in the hands of more Americans, and it belies Christ’s teaching of not returning evil for evil, or taking up weapons. One may be inclined to believe many Christians are unaware of the peace on Earth and goodwill Christian message, but every Christmas for a month the message is repeated ad nauseum in every store, Christmas card, and Christmas carol so that it is impossible to ignore Christ’s most important teaching; except for conservative Christians.
Whether one celebrates Christmas or not, the most important part of the Christian message is not that a virgin gave birth in a manger, but that in heralding the event, the angels previewed Christ’s message of peace and goodwill inherent in all of his teachings. It is a universal message for all mankind to follow, but for America’s neo-Christians it is a message of what not to do and little more than Christmas carol lyrics or words on seasonal greeting cards. Perhaps this Christmas will be different and the preponderance of Christ’s message of peace and goodwill will have the desired effect on “followers of Christ” as they tear up over the virgin in a manger story, or the good news that their object of salvation was born at all, but it is highly unlikely.
If the past four years are any indication, on December 26, so-called Christians will ignore Christ’s message and support more guns in Christians’ hands, more Republican attempts to cut Christian children’s’ school lunches, Christian seniors’ Meals on Wheels, Christian women’s cancer screenings, Christian Veterans’ benefits, and housing assistance for elderly Christians, because the idea of peace on Earth and goodwill toward mankind are, like all of Jesus Christ’s messages, not worthy of following.
One thing is certain, those most likely to follow Christ’s teachings at Christmas time and throughout the year are Secular Humanists, Pagans, Hindus, Heathens, Buddhists, and Muslims, and they, like Christ’s message of peace and goodwill, are the number one target of America’s conservative Christians. One hopes this holiday season, whether one celebrates Christmas or not, all Americans will reflect on, and work towards, achieving peace and goodwill at home and around the world because it is a message of humanity, and the one thing America desperately needs right now is humanity; something foreign to America’s conservative Christians. Happy Holidays from a Zen-Atheist Secular Humanist.

This year we need to make a concerted effort to start taxing the churches involved in politics. Heavily tax them. Tax them into oblivion. Tax them to the degree that their grandchildren will be paying off their debts.

Peace is more elusive than we think. Author C. David Coates wrote an eye opening poem which, like a mirror, exposes us to truths we may not wish to see. Here is a slightly modified version of that poem.
“Aren’t humans amazing? They kill wildlife – birds, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice and foxes by the million in order to protect their domestic animals and their feed.
Then they kill domestic animals by the billion and eat them. This in turn kills people by the million, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative – and fatal – health conditions like heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and cancer.
So then humans spend billions of dollars torturing and killing millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases.
Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals.
Meanwhile, few people recognize the absurdity of humans, who kill so easily and violently, and then plead for ‘Peace on Earth.’”
The good news is that anyone can break this cycle of violence. I did and you can too. Each of us has the power to choose compassion. Please visit these websites to align your core values with life affirming choices: veganvideo.org & tryveg.com

Reading your post, Rmuse, reminded me of the finding of a new poll which shows that 75% of republicans are fearful for themselves and the world–an increase of about 24% since 2006. This overweening focus on being afraid of almost everything/one is not a part of Christianity, for real Christians believe that with God in charge, they have nothing to fear. This further cements in my mind the idea that many of the Christians in the GOP are just going through the motions and have no intention of actually putting the principles and beliefs of Christianity into action. Christianity is a means to an end for these folks–a way to remain the dominant political, racial, and socio-economic group in the country. Billy and Franklin Graham, Pat Robertson, Bryan Fischer, and others of their ilk have successfully transformed Christianity into a political tool they use to maintain political power and to increase their own wealth, and no real Christian should have anything to do with these shysters. When I see the hatred that is pushed so frequently by these “men of the cloth,” it doesn’t surprise me that more Americans are abandoning organized religion.

“…Billy and Franklin Graham, Pat Robertson, Bryan Fischer, and others of their ilk have successfully transformed Christianity into a political tool they use to maintain political power and to increase their own wealth.”
Well said…the problem is, their game is not “illegal”.
The purpose behind all their proselytizing/recruitment is to create a tribe of christian warrior churches, not Christ fellowship. They have ransacked their “own” in order to gain control and create territorial boundaries for a “christian nation”.
They have “legally” trumped the very system that was created by the “founding fathers” meant for all “god’s children”; they have turned the Constitution into their personal juggernaut in order to usurp, overthrow democratic systems…and not just here, but in Europe, Africa and gawd know where else!
Thank “C” Street and “The Family” for their complicity in this conspiracy.

You had me until you mentioned Hillary. It’s time that those who identify themselves as liberal see and admit the truth about the Clinton presidency. That was the official end of the values and morals and action taken under the administration of FDR. For all intents and purposes the Dems have the same policy objectives as the GOP. They just don’t appear as insane or as blatant.

…”You had me until you mentioned Hillary.”
Gee that’s too bad…knee jerking over the facts, huh?
If you line up all the “usual suspects” within the GOP who have been caught in illicit affairs/cheating on spouses, beating spouses, their children, tapping toes in airport bathrooms, taking off to South America to visit a girlfriend, bring home dead fetus so the children could hold it, on and on, for the past 10 years, your comment on President Clinton doesn’t pass the stink test.

Jesus did say when we see these people ie preachers who claim “I am He” we should walk away from them…do not listen to them. Too bad many of their followers don’t read the New Testament and inform themselves of the words and teachings of Jesus Christ.
They ignore Jesus Christ at their own peril. Jesus Christ refers to them as hypocrites who will not enter the Kindom of Heaven but be cast aside.

Very well said I believe many far right christians just use religion as a life line, my point? people don’t typically seek God if their knee deep in material wealth, I believe most people seek something beyond themselves when they’ve hit rock bottom drugs, alcohol, financial ruin, etc and when theres nobody they can turn to. I don’t believe this is the best way to look for spiritual enlightenment! because the motivation may not be sincere! Yes for most it’s just a temporary pick me up but once these people kinda sorta straighten out their lives it’s back to the same behavior that got them to that rock bottom situation in the first place! The problem isn’t spirituality! it’s us! the phony republican religious right is just a collection of lost sheep who rather preach how everybody else should live but refuse to look into the mirror at themselves! If I’m correct the verse goes ”many are called but FEW are chosen”

Some day I will actually discuss what “real” Christians think and do, how they engage legally in political advocacy, and remind y’all about the abolitionists, labor leaders, the clergy who drove women to Canada pre-Roe, and the activism for LGBT rights – all of which is in the belief system of the MAJORITY.
Until I get up the energy to take this up ONE MORE TIME, happy solstice, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Years, and Festivus if that’s what you’re celebrating. Or just enjoying a few well earned days off.

Some days, in utter frustration of what passes as Christianity these days, I call myself a follower of Jesus of Nazareth. The message of the “Angels” has been drowned out by those who will not listen just as we don’t listen to the Christmas music in the stores. But that message does live and I welcome all the “Secular Humanists, Pagans, Hindus, Heathens, Buddhists, and Muslims,” and any others who listen. Together we can keep the message alive and hopeful.

I find it hilarious that many republicans preach to their low information christian flock that we should hate middle eastern countries who have religious figures running the government “theocracy” but have no problem in the republican party pushing their version of american theocracy! listening to complete idiots like Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin, Newt Gringrich, Rick Santorum etc etc! and to prove the nonsensical rants of these religious con artist they LOVE quoting the founding fathers!! First off contrary to popular belief the founding fathers weren’t perfect people! but they were smart enough to know mixing religion and politics was a recipe for disaster!! and now we have republicans playing the ”god card” to get votes from the religious right! Now we have the party of god and their phony religious views! it’s funny listening to Newt Gringrich talk about morals!! LOL a man who was thrown out as speaker of the house due to ethics violations!! and don’t talk about her 4 divorcees ! now how can a good catholic live like that? See republicans can’t get the general masses to buy into their corporate funded money grab! so they created ”social” issues like abortion, anti women rights, anti ANYTHING non caucasian male! anti gay is their favorite battle cry! and most religious republican lemmings jump in line to start showing their god I got your back jesus!! lets lynch the homos!! these religious nuts are a stain on christianity!

From making public proclamations of faith to engaging in intolerance, hate speech, and avarice to failing to act with grace, the Radical Religious Right falls short in every aspect of the Christian code of conduct delineated in the New Testament and in honoring the message of their chosen messiah.

Rmuse – you got quite close to something that’s at my core. I put peace in virtually every personal seasonal greeting and while not a popular meme, I used ‘By my deeds you shall know me’ several times this year (especially after the debates.) I’m not very religious but those themes seem important to moving forward in a way that sustains and doesn’t destroy the planet.

There is no incidation from this article that RMuse has been in church to hear the Christmas message or that she accepts the premise that religion is separate from politcs.
Feeding and succoring the poor is very important. At the two Christmas services I attended this year, one dedicated its donation to a mental health organization, the other donated is collection to Hurricane Sandy victims.
That is putting their money where RMuse’s mouth is.

Robert, she is a former Christian minister and bible scholar. Yes, churches are typically “loving” at this time of year. However, Christians supporting the hate, guns, and greed of Republican Party belie their so-called Christianity. If you read her article, you may have grasped that.

As a christian myself (33yrs) I seen many so called christians to be the most narrow minded bigoted people I’ve ever met!! Listen just because you accept Jesus as you’re savior doesn’t mean you’re perfect! it means you’re trying to live the teachings of Christ but I’ve noticed within the last 25 yrs things have gone terribly wrong! since the southern strategy by the republican party in the late 60′s things have completely gone WRONG! The super churches are teaching hate and republican ideology and it’s suckered so many ignorant hateful people!! I’m not trying to bash people but as a christian myself I have to be honest. Theres no way that ANY christian who studies in bible can honestly be conned so easily! I don’t look for religious values in ANY political party and any true christian thinking joining any political party is going to carry the flag for Jesus is delusional!! The republican party will have a lot to answer for one day and many of their so called christian followers will too. I feel bad saying this because I personally have a long way to go in my christian life but these republican religious right folks are an embarrassment a complete joke! But these kind of people aren’t new!! they were described quite clearly as being “PHARISEES” people like Pat Robertson etc are con men!! they get multimillion dollars from their poor sheep and it’s all tax free and support the republican party! Pat Robertson, is a multimillionaire!! and his pro republican rants just kills me!! Robertson sounds like Rick Santorum most days!!! this is insanity!!

This story’s headline: “The message, ‘peace on Earth, goodwill toward men’ seems lost on many Christians”
For the loveofgod, could you PUHLEEZ stop lumping all Christians in with the far-right-winged, Biblically-literal/inerrant/infallible, Bible-thumping, gay-hating, evangelical/fundamentalist/dominionist not-really-Christians who have co-opted/appropriated — nay, absconded with — the words “Christian” and “Christianity.” PLEASE! Stop it!
There is no shortage, in the world, of both socio-politically and theologically liberal/progressive true Christians, like me, who deplore what those on the Right are doing in my faith’s name. Stop dirtying me and my work with them and theirs.
The headline should have been: “The message, ‘peace on Earth, goodwill toward men’ seems lost on far-right Christians”
I realize that most everyone around here is an atheist, but could you please stop including as collateral damage those who are friend and not foe. My likes are considerably more charitable to agnostics, atheists and secular humanists in our Christian, ecumenical and interfaith/multi-faith/inter-spiritual writings… some of us advocating, even, for atheist/humanist chaplains in the military and hospitals. And you won’t find any of us espousing that the Biblical “Great Commission” mandates that we try to proselytize everyone, and try to shove our faith down your likes’ throats. Give such as we a freakin’ break around here, will ya’!
Geez! [shakes head in disbelief]
