What Do You Do With a 16-Year-Old Who Calls for the Assassination of Obama?
By: Sarah JonesSep. 7th, 2012more from Sarah Jones
Last night, a 16 year old Caucasian girl tweeted, “Someone needs to assassinate Obama… like ASAP #DieYouPieceOfShit”.
For this, according to the Daily Kos, she gained a lot of new followers and 300 retweets before her account was closed today. She also got her fair share of hate directed back at her.
Alyssa’s tweet is but a microcosm of what’s wrong with the modern day conservative movement. It’s indicative of what President Clinton said in his DNC speech, “I may often disagree with Republicans, but I never hated them, unlike the hatred displayed by extreme right wing activists towards President Obama.” The relentless hate directed at this President has been out of control from the beginning, led by Sarah Palin during the 2008 election and now being carried out by birther adjacent Mitt Romney, whose constant lies about Obama are meant to drive exactly the kind of racial animus displayed in Alyssa’s tweet.
After all, what reason could a 16 year old have for wanting a man she doesn’t know and whose policies she surely doesn’t know anything about to die? Yes, I can say with some confidence that she knows nothing of his policies, because I have yet to talk to any conservative – not one – who can accurately portray Obama’s policy stances. Even the most allegedly intellectually astute pundits on the Right are tainted with Foxian distortions and conspiracy theories of his intentions – intentions not reflected in his actual policies. In other words, they are running on fear, and fear is being driven to stir hate, and hate is being used to get out the vote for Republicans who can’t discuss their policies with even a modicum of honesty this go around.
The problems here are manifest. We have conservative Republicans who are out of control with their hate speech as a regular course of business. We have Democrats whose policy of tolerance and love for free speech confuses them into not setting appropriate boundaries against hate speech or recognizing the dangers of hate speech. And we have a nation of people who are so fed up with the hate and the failure of any mainstream outlet to report on it honestly or even call it out that they are enraged. Many of these people are not loyal Democrats—we’re talking Independents who voted for Obama in 2008 just because they didn’t want to associate with the hate in the Republican Party.
So we have hate on the Right being met with passivity and not enough tough love by the Left and also being met with an anger that’s been simmering since 2008 against the relentless hate of the Right. People are fed up.
We have a President who has met hate and threats with tolerance and erred on the side of respect for protesters, even when armed. To this end, the Secret Service has been more than tolerant of the death threats aimed at Obama.
But what these folks don’t seem to understand is that while yes, valuing the right to hate is part of valuing free speech, when it crosses over into violence and calls for assassinations, it must be dealt with swiftly and firmly. The Right’s authoritarian complex does not understand tolerance and turning the other cheek. They mistake Obama’s kindness for weakness, because they don’t value kindness. They only value power.
Why does this matter? Because it’s not just the President. The hate directed at him is also aimed at average citizens who may or may not support him. It can be aimed at African Americans purely for their skin color, and when calls for violence against the President are ignored, it signals to the juvenile mind of the reactionary cult member that it’s okay to be violent against citizens.
The violence is also aimed at citizens who support this President. I have first hand experience with this – having been told by a white male Republican dressed in khakis and a button down shirt that he hoped I died with the President for being a “ni**er lover”. On another occasion, as I was crossing the street to enter the Obama headquarters in 2008, a pick up truck with McCain Palin sticker on it picked up speed and swerved toward me so that I had to run to avoid being hit. That was four years ago.
Things are only worse now.
So how do we solve a problem like Alyssa?
Shame is an under-utilized tool of Democrats. Shame is a tool designed to keep order in society, without resorting to legislating morality. But this is a young girl. Clearly she requires adult guidance and supervision from folks who are interested in raising a moral, responsible citizen.
I’m reminded of Representative John Lewis’ message from his speech yesterday. He responded to hate with love.
Are we big enough to do that? And what does love look like in these circumstances?
I suspect, though I am hardly of the character of Mr. Lewis and am indeed fighting my own first instincts, that love in these circumstances looks like grace. So we can love Alyssa as the lost young person she is, and yet we must also have clear boundaries about what society will and will not tolerate. The consequences must be and probably will be tough.
Alyssa will forever be known as “that girl”; the girl who tweeted a demand for the assassination of the President of her country. If we get past the horror, she is stuck wearing the mantle of the young fool who knew nothing and talked too much.
Most likely, Alyssa didn’t mean what she wrote. But that’s where the teachable moment comes in. Words have consequences. Words drove Alyssa to hate as she did. Someone told her endless lies about this President, and she responded with the immature reaction of a child, sadly mimicking her Republican leaders.
In order for us to show grace, we must also stop behaving as if it’s okay to violently target people we disagree with. We can’t do that if we are threatening Alyssa.
So if we are to walk our talk, we follow John Lewis’ example. We forgive Alyssa, but we don’t forget. We show through our actions what we value. She is free to disagree with anyone, including the President. She is also free to educate herself about hate speech and the horrific consequences of it. And we are free to shame her behavior via publicly shunning it.
This country needs to get with the program regarding hate speech before it’s too late. We can’t docilely mistake passivity for tolerance and we can’t wait for the hate to envelope us all until we are down on their level. We must stand up for tolerance and justice at the same time. We must be firm in what is acceptable and we must demand that the calls to violence be dealt with swiftly and in a manner meant to discourage further calls for violence.
My heart goes out to this young girl, who most likely knows not what she did. But she is on the verge of becoming an adult, and we don’t want a society full of Alyssas. We can’t have that if we are to thrive, if we are to be an example of freedom and opportunity.
And if you haven’t noticed, as the election draws nearer, we are being surrounded by hate, assaulted by it from all directions – hate aimed at gays, immigrants, women, minorities, union members, teachers, and more. The mainstream media like CNN condones this hate and their failure to even respond to it when it comes from their own pundits only sanctions it as acceptable.
This is happening because the Republican Party has nothing else, and they are losing their grip on the narrative. In the past, they were able to fool voters and drive the narrative with silly accusations and distractions. But those tactics are only working on the minority who watch Fox News now, and the trickle down water cooler effect of Fox News watchers. It’s not enough to win a national election.
So they double down on hate. We must be prepared. And most of all, we must not forget who we are and what we stand for. Free speech must not be falsely equated with hate speech coupled with calls for violence. And while we don’t want to legislate against hate speech in order to protect the larger value of free speech, we have the tool of all societies – shaming – at our disposal.
The shaming of Alyssa’s behavior did commence immediately on Twitter, but let us not confuse her behavior with her person and let us not return fire with fire. We must always remember to offer a demonstration of a better way and we can’t do that if we allow ourselves to be consumed by the fire of hate. We hope Alyssa gets the help she needs, and we hope responsible adults can open her mind and heart.
I would say to Alyssa that if she’s lucky enough to be forgiven (and surely due to her age alone, she will be), she might remember to show the same grace to those with whom she disagrees. I would say that the ugly tweets she’s getting are a mirror of her own sentiment, and ask her how that feels, and ask her if she thinks that strangers on Twitter can judge her accurately based on one Tweet. If not, what does that say about her judgment of the President? If she wants us to look deeper into her soul and find the good, she must also be willing to return that compassion to others. After all, with even a hint of compassion, Alyssa would no longer be able to parrot the hate of the Right.
If Alyssa, as a micro representation of the Right, fails to learn these lessons, she and they are doomed to continue a small-minded worldview that will only bring them the same harsh, unyielding and inaccurate judgment of their behavior from others. This is not the direction we want to take our country, and it’s up to us to drive it forward.

It is the bullies that are usually bullied at home. The parents and the child leave a life of feelings of powerlessness and fear. Unfortunately that allows them to be manipulated endlessly by those with more power. This is not going to lead to any kind of a happy life for any of them.

The thing is she said it and it will follow her the rest of her life. I want to know what makes this 16 yr old hate someone so much that she wants to kill him when all he is trying to do is help us all. I wonder what her parents are teaching her? How sad all this hate directed at the president when we all should be working together to support the president and the issues that will help us all.

Indeed. I hope the Secret Service investigates ANYONE who expresses free speech/their point of view–on Twitter. Especially if it’s politically incorrect. That 16 year old white girl is probably part of a sleeper cell just waiting to strike. Oh, and I’m glad she’s white too, because then we can play the race card. Yay!!

I know it wasn’t the purpose of Sarah’s post, but people really went overboard in reaction to Ms. Douglas. First, being 16 years old, she was likely trolling for attention. Second, just RT it and add the Secret Service’s handle. There is no need to call her names back, and worse wish for her own death(which I saw last night).

Phil, at what age does it become “not ok” to incite assasination of the POTUS?
I point you to THIS ugly story and want to know if you think it’s ok that the young lady who was 17 years old “only knew that she was going out to beat a black man” but was unaware that they were going to beat him half to death and then run him over with their truck? Does that excuse her? Or should she have been a human being and at the very least called someone, let alone not gone along for the ride when she knew the evening’s entertainment was beating a black man half to death because she thought he was homeless and “no one would care”.

Would this be taken more seriously if this was a 16 or 17 year old boy? This girl is old enough to understand what she is doing/saying. People this age do kill other people and girls are becoming more violent than in the past. I hope this is treated as seriously as it would be if she had been a 40 year old KKK member. There should be no “going easy” because she is a 16 year old female.
Toni

I agree this should be treated seriously. She should arrested and locked up for solicitation of murder. Hate is taught and learned you are not born that way.

No, this girl should not be arrested. I do not condone what she said and I think someone should definitely talk to her about what she said and have her understand the seriousness of it, but she is a child. Children make mistakes. This is a moment to teach, not punish.

She is a child who is old enough to drive a car and make decisions with a 2000 lb killing machine. You may be naive at 16 to repercussions, but you should know by 16 that there are repercussions for ones actions

Not sure about whether a boy would be treated differently. I’m not sure why this girl’s tweet and the result of it became public knowledge. Someone probably facebooked it then everyone knew.

Not “they (her parents) are teaching her…”. “Her parents taught her…” That’s what she knows, and that’s what she is. The idea that any 16 year old who has this mindset and DOESN’T get national press can be changed for the better is far-fetched. Maybe the nation can shame this girl, but only maybe, and there are thousands more like her who will stir the pot of hate and keep it cooking in her place.
Keith

Yeah, I wasn’t excusing or condoning her behavior as I believe it was reprehensible. I do know that in my profession I see kids that are raised to hate due to race, religion etc. But I have also seen kids her age and people that are considerably older, change their perspective on issues such as these. I’ve seen it and change isn’t as far-fetched as you may think. Will she be replaced by another hate monger? Of course she will, but like Rep. John Lewis, it doesn’t mean we stop trying.

As someone who worked a juvy nut ward in my salad days, I have to agree with you. This girl needs a psychiatric work-up and a home study, for starters (though the Secret Service should be looking at the adults around her: parents, teachers, relatives, church), and may require commitment to a juvy ward for treatment (Kliebold and Harris might well have been forestalled by such intervention). Assuredly, she needs therapy. But a juvenile brain is not the same as ours: it often shares characteristics of an adult sociopath, and the last thing she needs is to be thrown in prison with adult sociopaths.

If she were a six-year old, that would be one thing. But at sixteen, she’s more than capable of making her own decisions and–we would hope–have a pretty clearly-defined sense of what’s right and what’s wrong.

I think there is a big difference between calling for (war crimes) trials for Bush (and if convicted, punishment even if it’s death) and the sort of thing we hear all the time about President Obama. One is rage at a betrayal of the US (and the Iraq people) for profit (for instance), the other is pure racist bigotry.
One is hostility towards someone who misused and abused the office he held, the other is a blind hatred towards a black man who holds the highest office in the land – and who is arguably the best president this nation has had in modern times.

I have a friend who blogged saying something to the effect of hoping W would trip and fall into a gator’s mouth – or something, I can’t remember exactly, but it wasn’t a direct threat at all, it was more of a wish something bad would just happen, and it was meant as comedy – and he got a visit from SS.
not excusing it at all – wishing death on people is bad karma in my book, full stop.
But he had a visit, nonetheless.
For me personally, I just wish überrich clueless people like the Romneys would end up dirt poor, on the street, hungry, and sick without healthcare, FOR A WEEK, just so they might have some kind of epiphany to reset their empathy barometers.

I don’t care that she’s “only 16.” If she were taught right from wrong at a younger age, we wouldn’t be reading about this now. If given a tap on the wrist, we’ll likely hear much worse about her in 10-20 years, if not sooner.
When we look back at the young years of every despicable criminal, the signs were there … and in most cases ignored.
I refuse to excuse this as ignorance and/or poor parenting. That’s the problem with too many kids these days. Spoiled and without discipline and consequences.

I agree…
She needs to be brought in for evaluation and questioning both. If she’s harmless, then let qualified adults make that decision. However, the notion that she is personally responsible for her words needs to be addressed and driven home by “adults”. She may have early onset of an undiagnosed personality disorder. The authorities with jurisdiction over minors needs find out what makes her tick before letting her off the hook…
She made a decision to “voice” herself in a manner that is considered illegal in our society. Her parents/relatives need to be “interviewed” as well as teachers, friends, etc.
Who knows? The authorities on her case may find a gaggle of like-minded conspirators or families who send their children to one particular fundamentalist camp/school teaching hate and violence…sounds far-fetched? Take a look at the documentary “Jesus Camp” on Youtube. As someone else mentioned, hate is taught.

Occupy Wall Street is a leftist movement and there was a lot of violence, including rapes. Even most of the lone gunman types are leftists. The left is also way more hypocritical than the right. They champion free speech, as long as they agree with it. All you have to do is read the comments here to see that the Dems are very hateful and spiteful, and have no mercy when it comes to those they disagree with. Liberalism really is a mental disorder.

Well said Sarah. I agree that Alyssa should be dealt with as a child, but as a child I believe her parents should also be held accountable, because this kind of behavior isn’t constructed in a vacuum. To answer a couple of items from the posters above, I have not ever wished for GWBs death and have never condoned it in any way when I’ve seen it expressed. I have said that he and Cheney and the rest of their crew should have been brought up on charges, but that is the legal way to deal with what I consider their crimes. I’ve never seen this kind of hatred before – like you I have been called a ni**er lover too, and once even by a black man where I worked!
I don’t think it does any of us any good to excuse and ignore this type of behavior. That would only serve to make it seem more acceptable to do it. I’m not sure where all this is heading towards, but it doesn’t look good for us, any of us. Thanks for your thoughtful post.

I agree, A Walkaway! If this child attends a church in which the minister speaks in an evil manner about the president, it’s very likely that that’s where she picked up her attitude toward him. Also, if she has parents who believe the lies about the president, she most likely believes them, too. Until 2009, I taught high school in a small town in Middle GA, and I can attest to the fact that many young people in that area believed what Fox News, their parents, and their ministers said about PBO more than any of the actual facts they saw/read in newspapers or online.

It is my understanding that she has been visited by the Secret Service. Some years ago, a student in our HS came to the attention of the SS due to a cartoon he drew. Believe me, when they got done, he was very, very scared and sorry. He now understands consequences of his “speech”.

Spot on. She’s just an ignorant kid indoctrinated, likely since birth, with fear and hatred. I’m betting she considers herself a “Good Christian” too. Her parents should be ashamed, but like the rest of the GOP, I doubt they still possess the capacity for that particular emotion.

I get that she’s 16 and some would say, “hey, she’s just 16, cut her some slack,” but I can honestly say that I never thought that way at her age. We didn’t have Twitter then but if I had even said it out loud, I would have caught hell from my parents. You just don’t do this kind of thing – I don’t care who you are or how old – or young – you are. You do NOT threaten the President of the U.S. regardless of who he is or whether you agree with him or not. She will learn that lesson the hard way.

We must all realize that no one is born with hatred – it is TAUGHT!
What can you do with her? Make sure that she knows what she said is an arrestable crime…and, other than giving her new family and friends who can teach her love….not much.
I am horrified at some young people today that spew hatred and villainous speech, but then I noticed that adults do it too! My granddaughter (who lives with me) had to shut down her Facebook page because one of her aunt’s was posting such demeaning and awful hate speech that she was embarrassed, and did not want to block her because she was ‘family’. And thatis how family’s teach hate.

How about a call to child protective services? Clearly she isn’t being raised by a responsible parent; no responsible parent allows a child to grow to the age of 16 without teaching them not to do a number of things, several of which this badly brought up brat did in her tweet. Perhaps the kindest thing is to take her from her current home environment, where she is being raised to be a sociopath, and put her somewhere where she can learn to be a human being.

As far as her age…
By the time I was 16, I’d been shot (pelted with shotgun pellets from long range – never learned who did it), threatened with a gun, experienced an attempted poisoning, and received numerous beatings and attempted “gang-ups” (not to mention almost constant verbal and mental bullying). I was attending what was considered one of the best schools in the nation at that time… and because of a false rumor (that I was gay) and because I didn’t think or react like the other kids, I was the school pariah.
The point is, kids can be little demons that are quite capable of murder and devious plots, and by the time they’re teens, they know exactly what they’re doing. They just put on the “I’m just a little kid!” act when caught. The one thing they fear is punishment and loss of privileges.
She should get the same treatment any adult gets for pulling stunts like hers. Maybe, just maybe that will wake her up, but I doubt it.
They also need to investigate her family and if she goes to church, especially her church. I’d bet that there is something going on there.

I have seen cases of virulent hatred in youngsters before, and usually (a) their parents are maltreating them in a way that infuriates them; (b) they are punished or threatened horribly if they direct their rage back at its source; (c) and they are then given a permitted target, at whom they *can* direct their rage. This can be anything from an animal, to a disfavored child, to an outgroup of whom they may never have met a single member. If they are also members of such an outgroup (e.g., girls in a misogynistic society), the situation can become truly convoluted. I would bet this girl’s home life is quite a picnic.

There was a lot of props that 16 year old got for what she said and one gal on Twitter caught some screen shots before they got taken down: twitter.com/NaQuelBby10o/...
They may be too young to vote, but they are not too young to be accountable for what they’re saying. Sadly, we’ve had enough examples from around the country about what our teens are capable of doing when they get their hands on guns for us be thinking of cutting them slack for youth and ignorance. I think her parents are as responsible for her uttered desire as she is. Perhaps they should be facing charges of corrupting the morals of a minor for starters.
What to do? Concurrent: 200 hours a year for 10 years of community service amid minority populations including a minimum of 5 years working in the morgue of a medical examiner’s office and 5 years of academic study focusing on Civil Rights history and American Civics.
Permanent ban on entering any and all professions that require state licensing and/or board certifications including the medical and law enforcement professions and a ban on entering military service.

In regards to G. W. Bush, I do remember people in those days saying, “Where’s Lee Harvey Oswald when you need him?” It may even have been a button or a bumper sticker. It was a clever tongue-in-cheek non-serious call for an assassination, but still, there it was. You can’t say people never called for the death of the sitting president. I don’t believe anybody ever expected anybody to really do it, but I admit it made me uncomfortable at the edges of my brain when I would hear such things even though I was gut-sick of his policies and couldn’t fathom how people could vote for such a brainless unethical creep.
The level of hate in this young girl’s tweet is way beyond what I’ve described, but the holier-than-she attitudes illustrate how we can be blind to our own errors. I don’t know what to do with Alyssa, but I agree she is the manifestation of her environment and probably is relaying what she hears in her home.
I just read about a policeman who was censored for voicing threats against Michelle Obama with bullet sound effects and all. That’s plain scary too. Even adults in positions of power are guilty of this opprobrious behaviour.

The big thing missing from out American society is also consequences for your actions. Just as the person who is dishonorably discharged from the military…I would suggest that we make sure this follows her the rest of her life as a warning to others not to be so hasty to be stupid. Feel like being stupid…you can face the music for it. For instance…the comedy “Kingpin” is a good example. The main character made one stupid mistake in his youth by following bad advice and paid the cost the rest of his life.

She should be arrested and questioned. She should be harshly reprimanded by the authorities. Chances are she was just spouting off, but there’s no reason to treat her with kid gloves just because she’s a 16 year old girl. She committed a serious offense, and if the message is ever going to take hold, it needs to be delivered assertively. This is not acceptable, ever, towards any President of the United States. Really, it should never be acceptable towards any person, period. But the fact is, threatening the President is a CRIME, and with good reason. I hope she’s scared straight, for her own good, and for the good of America.

I don’t think she necessarily had to hear this in chruch, or at home. It’s likely her peers in school are boasting this drivel (which, by the way, is nothing new — many people suggested that “someone ought to kill those Kennedys” before someone actually did). We have become a society of ignorance and meanness. Our kids have grown up in it — it’s part of their DNA now. She needs to be treated as an adult, since she is advocating an adult attitude and action. The SS needs to cuff and stuff her, interrogate her for a few days, impound her computers and phones, track everyone who agreed with her, and add her and them to their terrorist watch list. ANYONE who publicly advocates murdering a public official IS guilty of a crime and should be arrested.
She might be trailer trash vying for attention, but had someone done that to Bush, they’d have been arrested, as should she. Drop the charges later, if warranted, take her to trial and convict her, if necessary. But ten year olds are adept enough with rifles — and lack the brain development making of sound decisions until the age of 25 — and absolutely CAN carry out such a threat.

The Klan never left. They just learned how to keep people from catching on and how to hide. The people who wear the sheets and hoods – those are pretty much just the “cannon fodder” for the leaders.
(A little tidbit – the Klan is more about power relations and keeping people in their place than it is about race, except at the lower levels. It’s as much economic as anything. I learned that tidbit a few years ago while studying race issues – they want minorities “in their place” for exploitation and abuse.)

She is definitely a product of her upbringing and social environment, but that does nothing to absolve her from responsibility for her vitriolic and threatening post. I hope she and her parents are feeling threatened by the inevitable scrutiny from federal agencies. At 16, the same age as my grandson who understands that what is posted on the internet is not private, she should have known better. Things like this do even more to put the GOP in an extremely bad light.
JoeAversano
Sep. 8th, 2012 at 1:51 am
A lot of the people posting here are delusional. The Dems are the party of civility? Seriously? A Democratic delegate from New York, Julia Rodriguez, said that if she saw Mitt Romney, she would like to kill him. Obama told the Republicans when he became President in 2009 that elections have consequences, and they lost. He said they could come along, but would hav to ride in the back of the bus. He claims that the Republicans want dirty air and dirty water. Early on when the subject of bipartisanship came up, his chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said “We have the votes. F— ‘em”.
For years the left made jokes and wrote books about killing Bush. The same Dems who claimed Sadam Hussein had WMDs prior to Bush getting elected, were the first to call Bush a liar when huge stockpiles of WMDs weren’t found when we invaded Iraq. For the most part, Republicans say that Dems are wrong on the issues. The Dems say that the Republicans are not only wrong, but they are stupid, bible thumpers, greedy, racist, and all other sorts of personal attacks. Even a lot of Dems admit that their side is a lot more vicious in their attacks.
I also find it funny that many here think that a young 16 year old girl is considered a dangerous person who should be prosecuted, yet the 17 year, 10 month old Trayvon Martin was portrayed as a harmless child who was not a threat to George Zimmerman, even though he broke Zimmerman’s nose and banged his head on the concrete.
I guarantee for most people posting here, I could give you a scenario and if you thought it involved a Repub you would have one opinion, and if it involved a Dem, you would have the opposite opinion. All you Obama supporters, don’t forget to vote on the second Tuesday of November.

While there have undeniably been Democrats and people on the left who have advocated violence, the vast majority of violent language is coming from the right in 2012. That said, you are off topic because the discussion is about a young girl who undoubtedly learned this kind of hate from her elders and should be held accountable for posting her hatred of this president in such violent terms. Since there is no way to defend her, you chose to deflect by jumping on the rest of us. Violent threats against this president dwarf the number that were directed against GW, and I sincerely hope that this one will not be ignored even those Alyssa is just 16. Even if she didn’t know a call to assassinate Obama would get her into hot water, she surely knew to call for the murder of a person, any person, is a no no and morally wrong in our society. I am quite sure she doesn’t live in a box. She is on twitter, so I know she has access to the internet. Short of electroshock therapy and from others have said about the history of her tweets, she is a person who has chosen a path of the unjust. She should be treated as such. By the way, this cannot be tolerated! This is where the Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold and the James Holmes of society come from. The passivity of this society to condone killings and murder. I disagree with you that a 16 year old girl does not know what she is doing.
I think she knew exactly what she was doing. Why she posted it is a different story?
Was it a dare? Was it a to prove something?
Most 16 year olds can get a driving permit. I hope that they know what they are doing.
I have to hope that her views will change when she gets older and that the hate that she carries in her heart does not multiply and grow.
But a 16 year old had to learn that hate from someplace. That is what needs to be investigated.
Home, friends she hangs out with, school or church?

The basis of all hate is fear. The more powerless a person perceives themselves to be, the more they fear. Rather than identify and face down their fears many people cover their fear with hatred. Those that believe something is the cause of their fears may displace their hatred onto that “other” thing.
Nobody can make another person “feel” anything; love, fear, sadness, anger, happiness. Each human being has the ability to determine what their reaction is going to be to anything. Most humans have a hard time identifying what they are feeling much less have any kind of control over their feelings. As a result, they are easily manipulated by more astute people; parents, religion, commercials, friends, spouses, bosses.
As a society we are lead to believe that something external to us is the source of our happiness, anger, etc. We falsely believe that our happiness, for example, is in the hands of others to make us feel (like love). We falsely believe that inanimate objects (money) can MAKE us happy. Conversely, we falsely ascribe to others the power to make us feel unloved, unwanted, poor. So people give away their own power over their lives to “others”. Because they believe the responsibility for their emotional condition is someone else’s “responsibility”, they then falsely blame those others for their emotional lives rather than taking responsibility for themselves.
It is not easy to start taking back the power, the control, the responsibility over how we feel and diminish or eliminate external factors. It is most important to “own” our own fear and happiness. Identify the fear underlying the anger and deal with it, come to terms with it in an adult way. If we all practice bravery in the face of little fears it is like a muscle that we exercise it gets stronger when time to face the bigger fears. We uselessly spend our lives searching for the “one” or the “things” that will MAKE us happy rather than finding happiness inside.

Hate and fear are not connected. Fear can also lead to caution and introspection, and then to understanding.
Fear is a natural reaction to threat. Hate is the inverse of love, and it’s a choice (even as love is a choice).
You choose to hate. You choose to love. You don’t choose to fear.

I should also say that hate can be a reaction – to injustice that is never corrected (which in this country, is normal).

“I should also say that hate can be a reaction – to injustice…”
Injustice removes a persons sense of power over their own lives. We all fear being at someone else’s mercy. We can fear it for ourselves (losing a job) or for others more generally.
The person who has been dealt a deep personal injustice and turns to hatred will consume themselves and perhaps “go postal” aimed at the perceived source specifically, or in general to a group.
OTOH, both those dealt injustice and those who empathize can regain their sense of power by fighting that injustice not through hatred of the source of injustice, but by love of those suffering the injustice. Gandhi and MLK mobilized this love of justice to obtain some measure of justice and return power to the people.

Only someone who hasn’t experienced injustice first hand (or not experienced profound injustice) can say bullshit like that.
The only truth in what you said is that injustice takes away people’s power. The only way to get justice or to resist more (and it’s not always successful) is to not forgive or forget, until justice is done. “Forgive and forget” is just a way to get someone to lower their barriers so that the first person can hurt them again.

“Hate and fear are not connected.”
Hate is one way of dealing with fear. Hate is an irrational way of dealing with the sense of powerlessness fear engenders, a way of dealing with what is perceived to be a threat.
There are many situations in which fear is rational and justified. But how we deal with our fears will determine if we are adult and capable of resolving fearful situations so that it doesnt blight our lives, so that it doesnt control our lives.

She should be fully investigated. Arrested if indicated. Fined or jailed if convicted. Evaluated psychologically in any case. Banned from phone and computers by her parents. We ignore such actions at our peril. We have seen more than ample evidence of what happens when behavior like this is ignored.

Sarah, thank you for such a thoughtful article. I wholeheartedly support what you advocate here — boundaries are necessary with a compassionate approach. As you state so well: “Free speech must not be falsely equated with hate speech coupled with calls for violence. And while we don’t want to legislate against hate speech in order to protect the larger value of free speech, we have the tool of all societies – shaming – at our disposal.”
Anyone calling for the assassination of our president is unacceptable, and there needs to be consequences.

The First Family have had to endure and still endure much. And with all the negativity, the family has decided to undergo another four years. They are defiitely walking by the faith and not giving in to fear!
It also speaks volumes when 2 years ago a child asked President Obama “Why do people hate you?” And hate is still so prevalent towards President Obama: www.youtube.com/watch?v=B...

What bothers me is all the false equivalence I read in this thread. There is no equivalence whatsoever between the hate from the Republicans and the anger or rage expressed by Democrats.
So you Republican trolls, keep your “but you do it too!” comments to yourself. You’re full of shit and YOU KNOW IT.
There was and are no excuse for death threats for President Obama. He’s arguably one of the best presidents this country has ever had, and if the Republican racist bigots would stop trying to crush the “uppity ######”, this country might really take off. Shoot, imagine what this country might have been like now if they hadn’t tried to stop every good thing President Obama did!

Correct. I challenge Republicans making these false equivalencies to link to elected Democrats calling for an armed revolution, screaming at Bush during an address to the nation, or Democratic Party officials hanging pictures of Bush as Hitler in their offices, putting Bush in Muslim garb and claiming he was a terrorist. Yes, I’m sure citizens and some bloggers said horrible things — but it wasn’t sanctioned by elected officials, nor was it incited by years of false, inflammatory charges by elected officials. We have Republicans running for office who used Obama as a target, said they wanted to hunt him down, and worse. Second amendment remedies ringing a bell? Link to the Democrat in the House of Representatives who called for Republicans to be investigated or claimed a Republican was part of a terrorist cell and wrote to officials demanding an investigation of said person. It didn’t happen.
And that’s not even broaching Fox News’ inciting.
Every party has their nuts, but the Republican Party has gone all out on inciting hatred of this president, using violent rhetoric to accuse him of trying to kill American people and being a terrorist. The Democrats do not condone their nuts, they condemn them, and their party is hardly chock full of them.
It’s about the leadership – not the individuals.
And who can forget B-girl? Planting a false attack on their own in order to blame Democrats for it, thereby giving them the opportunity to say both sides do it, instead of cleaning up their own act. So embarrassing.
And lastly, while Republicans have been lying about this President for four years and counting, Democrats were angry at Bush for lying us into a war on false pretenses. A war that has killed thousands of people. There’s something to be said for reality, versus Republicans’ claims that Obama’s socialist death panels were going to kill Sarah Palin’s baby.

I hope she has a court date soon to answer to the charges of asking someone to shoot the President. Yes she is young, 16, but 16 year olds are tried as adults everyday in the American justice system. People need to know that there will be no tolerance of threats to our elected officials, After watching Gabby Gifford’s amazing recovery and her leading the Pledge of Alleigence at the DNC, I have no sympathy for that kind of BS that 16 year old did.

Hit her. Hit her hard. other1 year-olds have been expelled from school for making threats and spewing this kind of hatred. Hold her parents accountable. Lock her out of FB, Twitter, Instagram, and whatever other social media that she undoubtedly is to immature to use. Im disgusted with what I hear from people, from young people. So much hatred and evil in the world, and for no reason in most cases.

When Obama was first elected, there were people in my rural town that made threats on the President’s life. Although these statements were made to others, I faced them and said I would contact the FBI if I heard these statements first hand.
A threat on a president’s life is federal offense and they can be prosecuted.
Where is respect for the office of president being taught? Or is this still the bigotry taught at home or in angry communities?

If the person that tweeted this statement was a Muslin American citizen, that person would likely be in a cell somewhere right now, and people would be cheering about it. And it would further scapegoat people that are Muslims. Its a double standard.

That’s about the most useless bit of advice I’ve ever encountered.
If you don’t fight and keep them in mind, they’ll get away with it. There is no “What goes around comes around” or “Karma”, no matter what people claim! The greedy and evil get away with it nearly every time, and the only chance you have for ever seeing justice (not vengeance, JUSTICE) is by “holding on”.
Justice is only bought by vigilance and NOT FORGETTING or forgiving. Otherwise it’s “The best justice money can buy”, and since evil people are usually the ones with money, Justice is on their side.

I’ve got to say, the demonization of President Bush was just as heinous, at least on an individual basis. I knew a 15 year old girl who, to a parent volunteer at an educational event, said she wished she could kill President Bush, and all the volunteer told her was that she shouldn’t say that too loud or someone might hear her! That was it! I even knew a couple who believed that President Bush was responsible for more deaths than Hitler… I am not exaggerating. There will always be extreme haters out there no matter how noble or ignoble a politician might be. I think the real lesson here is that, when we teach respect to children, we need to teach respect for all people of all convictions. instead of respect for all those but the people we find just too distasteful.

I live in Idaho and I hear comments like that often and in public. Not long ago a woman loudly made a comment almost identical to this in a restaurant and out of the twelve customers I was the only one not smiling. The disturbing thing is that these people feel comfortable expressing their hatefullness so openly. This woman is no thoughtless teenager, she’s in her 60′s and my neighbor.

Three of those people should get a visit from the secret service. The fourth, though their tweet shows a lack of class, wasn’t framed as a threat, and is therefore considered free speech. All (including the one who threatened Obama) could use some time with some mental health professionals. There are a number of people on the Right I would love to see as defendants in a court of law. Rove, Cheney, and Bush should be making little ones outta big ones as we speak. I consider them directly responsible for the deaths of just about every service member who sacrificed their lives in Iraq, because of their lies. Never happen, though. Too much teflon left over from Reagan.

The corporate dumbing-down of America has been going on for 30 years, and is all but complete. The Right has a long history of using the infirm and the mentally ill to do their dirty work. Long before Gabby Giffords was shot, and conversation like this likely took place in some boardroom at Fox:
Corporate tool #1:”What if some crazy person uses what we say on a daily basis to hurt or kill someone?”
Corporate tool #2:”Two words. Plausible deniability. Are we supposed to be responsible for all the nutjobs out there (wink)? By the way, you’re fired.”
Lies, dirty tricks, and a lack of anything resembling conscience. It’s how they roll.

As a teenager not too much older than this girl, her post disgusts me beyond words. As an extreme lefty, in addition to my own ideology, I firmly believe that the least of her worries should be visits from the Secret Service or a national shaming. I sincerely think that she should be chemically spayed and unable to adopt a child, unable to hold a state or government job, unable to use any airline or go on any commercial ship, for the rest of her natural life… I don’t care that she’s “young,” particularly if the argument is that she’s “too young to understand.”
That, right there, is pure and unadulterated BULLSHIT. My political views were set in proverbial cement by the age of seven—and, let’s set the record straight here, I wouldn’t mind kicking this girl in her ovaries. I would love to take a swing at Romney, especially for that birth certificate comment he made a while ago. (a white guy from Michigan, in the corporate world…? Yeah, Mittens, nobody is ever going to think you’re not from the United States of Corruption.)
Many things (the execution of Saddam Hussein comes to mind) are debatable as far as whether they were good or bad. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. THIS IS AN ACT OF TREASON AND SEDITION.
Her life needs to become one of suffering and agony—actions have consequences, and mock-ordering the assassination of a world leader isn’t something anybody should do to earn “cool points” (or, as kids nowadays say, “swag”) and to tell their friends about.
(I’m from a very conservative part of the US, entirely surrounded by these racist and homophobic bigots… I apologize if I’m ranting, that wasn’t my intention.)

Unfortunately, since unleashing Grisly Grandma Sarah Palin four years ago, the RWNJs and Dominionists are completely comfortable with this kind of thing.
I was politically astute at 15, when I started carrying around petitions (real pieces of paper with actual signatures) for giving 18-year-olds the vote. I hope a visit from the Secret Service and/or FBI is enough to scare her straight, and I hope her home life is investigated.

Hate is a disease for which there is no cure. This young lady commited a Hate crime and should be dealt with accordingly. I am not going to rush to judgement by blaming her parents or peers until we know all of the facts of the case. I agree that hate is taught and learned and I want to know who taught this woman to hate our President and why? I would like to hear her parents speak to the media about their feelings and what they think may have caused their daughter to make those comments? I would also like to see the SS and/or FBI question her classmates and peers. This is a very serious offense.

How is this any different than the fear campaigns against George W. and to be quite frank i see a LOT more animosity towards Mitt in my daily news feed. This article could not be more hypocritical. And this is coming from a former Obama supporter. I’m so tired of seeing partisan propaganda like this. Mitt and Barack should both be ashamed of themselves for running the dirtiest, most degrading to the US’ collective intelligence, shameless campaigns in our history. and shame on all of you for buying into it.
