On his radio show today Glenn Beck unveiled his latest conspiracy theory that the Obama administration is going to use Onstar to spy on Americans and enforce martial law. He said OnStar is, “fantastic technology if you trust the people whose hands are controlling that technology.” OnStar is now part of the vast Obama conspiracy.
Here is the audio courtesy of Media Matters:
Beck said of OnStar, “Fantastic technology, fantastic technology, if you trust the people whose hands are controlling that technology. OnStar is a private company. I should say a separate company. They did not participate in the bailout, but their client is General Motors. Now maybe I missed the big announcement that they were just going to say eh, screw those civil libertarians. Maybe I missed that. Maybe this has been announced and going, and they have been doing this for years and years. I just can tell you that the conversation I had a couple of years ago, no, they weren’t going to do it because of the civil libertarian problems.”
He goes on to say, “Now the commercial comes out in September of this year where they are shutting off your engine, again not technology to be feared, not a company at this point to be feared, but we don’t seem to be going in the right direction with our government. Our government is starting to consume everything and control everything…Do you want the government to be able to know where you are in your car all the time, also be able to have a microphone in your car?”
Beck then went on rant about how the national debt is going to lead to martial law, and this is why his listeners should not trust the government with tracking devices, listening devices, and OnStar’s ability to turn your car off.
If OnStar is a separate company that was involved in the bailout, then how is the government controlling them? Onstar’s client, GM was bailed out, so according to Beck this means that OnStar is also under the thumb of the Obama administration. This is what his whole theory hinges on. I hate to tell Glenn this, but the government already has better technology than OnStar. They can watch any car they want.
My only question is how long is it going to take for OnStar to sue Beck? His whole theory has no basis in fact, and there is no motivation either for the Obama administration to use OnStar, or the company to work with government. This whole theory is straight out of crack pot central casting.
