Sarah Palin Isn't a Responsible Leader
You might think that certain political leaders would be feeling, at the very least, chagrin this morning, waking up to the picture of Faces of Hope 9 year old Christina Taylor Green who is dead, the innocent victim of political messaging gone crazy. But if you thought that political leaders like Sarah Palin could think of how a tragedy like this impacts anyone other than themselves, you would be wrong. Christina Taylor Green is dead and the Palin camp has somehow managed to make Sarah Palin the victim, yet again.
Yesterday I published a brief news item regarding the fact that the Democratic Congresswoman who had been shot in the head along with 12 other victims, six of whom have died, was featured in Sarah Palin’s target hit list. A list not only featured on her Facebook Page but her SarahPac page as well. A list that when published received an outcry of outrage for its violent suggestions. A list that Sarah Palin not only refused to take down, but gloated over in speeches, tweets, and her Facebook Page.
Yesterday, after the tragic news of this mass shooting, Ms Palin put out a brief statement in which she offered condolences and said she was praying for Gifford’s family. Gee, that’s nice, I thought, but where’s the introspection? Where’s the accountability? No, I don’t think Sarah Palin is to blame for a crazy person shooting a Democratic representative who represented a government he thought was “treasonous”. She didn’t actually pull the trigger, after all. But she has deliberately and with malice aforethought created an atmosphere of hate, division, fear and paranoia. An atmosphere of white nationalism that according to law enforcement officials, it appears this young man embraced.
Such atmospheres are magnetic pulls for those prone to insanity. And it’s precisely for this reason that political leaders should not engage in violent rhetoric. Ms Palin knows this. Ms Palin was called out for inciting violence in Alaska. Ms Palin was called out for inciting violence against then Senator Obama, his wife and children during the 2008 campaign season. The Telegraph UK reported that the Secret Service asked her to walk it back as her rhetoric was causing an increase in death threats against the Obama family but she refused.
“The attacks provoked a near lynch mob atmosphere at her rallies, with supporters yelling “terrorist” and “kill him” until the McCain campaign ordered her to tone down the rhetoric. But it has now emerged that her demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to go even further. The Secret Service warned the Obama family in mid October that they had seen a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the Democratic candidate, coinciding with Mrs Palin’s attacks.”
And here is where I do hold Sarah Palin accountable for her irresponsible, selfish and cynical behavior. Ms Palin has been aware of the consequences of her words for a long time now. Ms Palin used to give out public statements as a governor that called for a “backlash” against “asinine” citizens who filed ethics complaints against her. Ms Palin has seen the death threats her rabid, unstable “fans” have issued to anyone who dared to call Ms Palin accountable, including Senator Yee of California whose only crime was to ask the university where Ms Palin was speaking to disclose what it was paying her. For this, he received heinous death threats, faxes of a noose around his neck and President Obama’s neck, and ugly, vile disgusting rhetoric dripping with gutter hate only fit for the mentally unstable. But those are Ms Palin’s bestest fans.
And for those reasons, Ms Palin is well aware of the consequences of her actions. And yet, instead of having had a re-think, Ms Palin went to bed last night feeling like she was the victim here.
A nine year old girl is dead along with five other people—people with families, people who were someone’s world – and yet Ms Palin went to sleep last night feeling sorry for herself. This is where we have a disconnect that cannot pass.
Last night the Palin camp took to the airwaves to decry the unfair treatment Ms Palin has received. The person who speaks for Ms Palin and writes for her on Facebook gave an interview with conservative radio host Tammy Bruce wherein she decried that blaming Sarah Palin for the violence yesterday was “obscene” and “appalling”. In fact, Rebecca Mansour went so far as to claim that the “target list” was not intended to allude to guns. Tammy Bruce’s website introduces the interview thusly, “Rebecca works for Governor Palin’s SarahPAC and while she joins me personally and not on behalf of the PAC, she does address the shocking effort by depraved liberals to somehow blame Governor Palin for today’s atrocity.” It’s all about Sarah. Oh, and demonizing the left as “depraved liberals” among other name calling. Way to walk back the hate talk. Listen to this at your own risk.
No, Ms Mansour, I’m afraid you haven’t the faintest notion about what is so obscene and appalling here. What is so obscene and appalling is that instead of owning up to being a part of a culture of violence (one which many politicians are a part of, one in which both sides have partaken, but one in which only one side has honed violent rhetoric to a finely sharpened tool – an act of devotion by cynical leaders for their weapon of choice, at times their only weapon) and leading this country, her fans, in a moment of crisis, Ms Palin has made it about herself.
Instead of praying on this horrible tragedy and having a come to Jesus moment wherein she faced up to her own responsibility here, Ms Palin has chosen to make this all about her. It’s not about the obscene deaths of six other people or a country of grieving Americans who are frightened to disagree with their neighbors about politics.
Recall if you will the Tennessee man whose car was rammed over his Obama bumper sticker shortly after Ms Palin urged her supporters, “That bumper sticker that maybe you’ll see on the next Subaru driving by — an Obama bumper sticker — you should stop the driver and say, “So how is that hopey, changey thing working out for ya?”" That man had his young daughter in his car when his vehicle was rammed repeatedly by an enraged driver. In court affadavits as reported by Palingates, the bumper sticker is mentioned as the reason for the road rage:
“On 3-25-10 Harry Weisiger pulled up behind Mark Duren’s Toyota Camry at a stop sign. He blew his horn at Duren to get his attention. He then began to point at Duren’s OBAMA/BIDEN bumper sticker. He then began to stick up the middle finger of both of his hands to Duren. When Duren left the stop sign, Weisiger rushed up to him and began to bump his vehicle into Duren’s Camry. Weisiger then used his Vehicle to push Duren’s Camry into a driveway located at 2539 Blair Blvd. There was proprety (sic) damage to both vehicles and Defendant left the scene without stopping.”
Instead of owning up to how she has targeted liberals and indeed all political opposition over and over again until they have to man up every morning in order to exercise their freedom of speech, the Palin camp has chosen to feel victimized. And while Mansour goes out of her way to say she’s not Ms Palin’s spokesperson, the culture of victimization that Ms Palin has been carefully tending in her hothouse of self pity until its spores invade even the most immune environments (cries of the press invading her privacy as she is shooting her reality show) has been impossible to miss these past two years. Mansour’s proliferation of outrage is pure Palin.
As for the offensive claim that the graphics weren’t intended to indicate guns, Ms Palin refuted that notion herself through various tweets and speeches. Here’s Ms Palin’s FB response to the outcry against her graphics:
“In the battle, set your sights on next season’s targets! From the shot across the bow – the first second’s tip-off – your leaders will be in the enemy’s crosshairs, so you must execute strong defensive tactics. You won’t win only playing defense, so get on offense! The crossfire is intense, so penetrate through enemy territory by bombing through the press, and use your strong weapons – your Big Guns – to drive to the hole. Shoot with accuracy; aim high and remember it takes blood, sweat and tears to win.
Focus on the goal and fight for it. If the gate is closed, go over the fence. If the fence is too high, pole vault in. If that doesn’t work, parachute in. If the other side tries to push back, your attitude should be “go for it.” Get in their faces and argue with them. Every possession is a battle; you’ll only win the war if you’ve picked your battles wisely. No matter how tough it gets, never retreat, instead RELOAD!”
(h/t Immoral Minority)
If that isn’t enough, you can google gun sight graphics. But honestly, who in their right mind would even make this argument? Ms Palin knows the power of imagery and symbols. This is how the Right has been winning the battle of fear over thought for quite some time now. This pathetic, absurd attempt to distance themselves from reality and from their own responsibility doesn’t merit any response by reasonable people.
Ms Palin and her fans have taken refuge in the fact that other politicians have made violent metaphors. This is true. However, Ms Palin is among the Hateful Gang of Four who have consistently, with deliberative purpose, and in fact without relent, cynically used the division in this country to further their own means. Ms Palin has a pattern of using violent rhetoric. Ms Palin never “retreats”, she “reloads”. Ms Palin takes offense when it’s suggested that she walk it back a tad. But more importantly, a Democratic Congresswoman suffered an assassination attempt and thus, the attempts at modern day false equivalency are barren of lucidity.
I’m hard pressed to think of a politician who has so consistently beaten the drum of violence as Ms Palin. It is, in fact, why a good many Americans did not vote for her in 2008. This is what drove them away from their base camp of the Republican Party. They could not partake in the hate. Many of them sat it out while others voted for President Obama, even though they didn’t agree with his politics.
This says good things about Americans. While we are a nation divided in many ways, while we are at a low point in history right now, in our souls, Americans are always reaching for the higher point. Americans do get pulled away from the issues and distracted by the Paris Hiltons of the world, we are greedy and prone to consumerism and self-absorbed at times. But in times of crisis, when it really matters, Americans band together and the fighting spirit of a nation of immigrants comes together to take a stand for liberty, for freedom, for equality, and for justice. We have many faults, but we have brave spirits whose hearts see past the noxious fumes of disguise and demagoguery. Americans said no to hate in 2008. And we will do so again.
Our liberty is at stake here. Our democratic process is at stake. Our freedom of speech is at stake. Because freedom of speech doesn’t just cover the haters who screech violence against their opposition and then cover their behinds after the fact in cowardice. No, freedom of speech covers you and me as well. We have a right to have our voices heard in the wilderness without feeling terrorized. And to those who continue to speak out even as they are threatened and their families threatened with violence by an out of control, extremist, angry contingency being urged on from the sidelines by yellow-bellied, morally devoid cowards, I salute you.
This isn’t about Sarah Palin, even though she thinks it is. It’s about America. This is our moment to seize the good in us and take a united stand for freedom and democracy. Don’t be cowed by the outcries of victimization by the right. We are all grown ups here, except for Christina Taylor Green, who will never be given the chance to grow up now.
Enough.

Targets on surveyors maps!!!…No sarah…We are not at your intellectual low level…We know better!
The american people are not as stupid as her supporters—she is confused about the audience!
Geo. Washington:
“However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.
Do not let the msm white wash this…
When vile hate inciting rhetoric is aimed at the unbalanced and low information people–they – the people spewing the violent rhetoric- know exactly what they are doing!.. Reprehensible and more than irresponsible but certainly culpable..The dynamic is the same through history–use the people most vulnerable to do your dirty work.
palin, beck, and limpbow and their ilk are all sitting with the blood of 6 dead and 18 injured…’.Lock and Load, crosshairs charts- 2 Amendment remedies–bring them down—and other such utterances provoked this act of unspeakable violence!
Good luck rewriting this script– fox!

While Christina was perishing, you felt it OK to post about the crosshairs website and place blame, however when someone defends themselves, they are not honoring the poor childs memory or the tragedy of her family. Can you not see the hypocrisy?
Our families prayers go out the Christinas family, and all the victims from yesterdays horrific tragedy. May those injured recover quickly from the physical and psychological wounds, and those who lost their loved ones have peace.

Personally, I do not think Sarah Palins name should even be brought up in this tragedy, and no I would not say anything to her. She did not need to defend herself until she was blamed. It’s not as though she just out of the blue started yelling about liberals blaming her, liberals DID blame her and she defended herself.
To post assigning blame and then accuse someone else of not having the compassion for the poor child, is hypocrisy. The shooter was a mentally disturbed person. NO ONE could ever know what set him off, it could have been anything. To exclusively blame Palin is irresponsible.

It is her rhetoric that is blamed. More and more is coming out about this killer, maybe we should all wait until all is known?

How refreshing! Logic! Respect! Intelligent points to debate about!
…I like you, Jackie.
While I don’t agree with you about the hypocrisy part, I can see where you’re coming from.
To me- well. Let me explain it using an analogy.
Pretend you’re on a sidewalk, walking along a street. You see a kid on a bike riding along. A car’s driving along the street too, but it’s raining and the car suddenly hydroplanes out of control and hits the kid on the bike.
The child goes flying… but the driver doesn’t stop. They just wave out the window and continue on, not even pausing to apologize, check on the bicyclist, or show any remorse or concern at all.
Another day on the road.
First response: we hurry over to the kid. While the kid is hurt, we’ve done all we can. We’ve called 911, the paramedics are here, all we can do now is stand back and watch….And fume about the inconsiderate driver.
That is why, I think, so many people on this site are arguing against Ms. Palin. There’s little else we can do about the situation except to raise outcry at the violent rhetoric- this is the way that we’re calling 911. And we fume, while we worry, and wring our hands, and know there’s nothing we can do except what we’re doing.

And YOU cannot see the false equivalency in the statement you just made? The big picture here is that Sarah Palin is now scrambling to cover her violence inciting tracks, while lying through her teeth about it. No surprise there. If any Democrat had put gun site crosshairs on there websites asking followers to “reload” and “aim” at Republicans the GOP would have had multi-million dollar commercials out already demanding Obama’s resignation. Typical of deranged right wing thinking. Rail about responsibility, but NEVER…EVER take any…and make sure to play the victim in the process. Disgusting.

Why don’t you man up to the fact that your cult hero is a dangerously ill person who should try waling in the shoes of the people she attacks everyday. Tell me, do you know what it’s like to get death threats because of your political persuasion? Does your family have to live in fear? Because a lot of liberals do. A democratic representative was shot in the head and you are so busy defending palin you don’t even realize that you’re attacking others for things they didn’t do. Thank you, Ms. Jones. You addressed pertinent facts. I was of the opinon that Palin’s response to public outrage of her map of targets designated with crosshairs was to post the violent rhetoric laden post about basketball. It is Palin’s style or modus operadi to give her proverbial middle finger to moral decency and escalate. In 2008 I let my objection to Palin’s rhetoric be heard at local McCain/Palin headquarters and I also called the local FBI office. The FBI agent informed me there was noting they could do until someone was physically harmed. Yesterday people were harmed and killed. I do hope that lawfully Palin is found guilty of “depraved indifference” for she has not backed down but escalated even when informed of death threats to even innocent children. It is up to each of us to take a stand. Palin is a perpetrator of this violence and you aptly described her as “gloating”. She does gloat about “getting people wee wee’d up” provoking and inciting people to fear and hate based on lies she spews. She indeed encouraged physical violence suggesting road confrontations indifferent to the violence that transpired. I hope the families of this mass shooting have Palin charged with depraved indifference and hold her liable for damages. I also hold party leaders accountable for not standing up to her also.

Palin has never learned that “be careful what you wish for” meme.
She wants people to know her? Well, I guarantee you that the attention is all about her, and her influence in this Massacre. And even now, she is playing the victim, and trying to make it all about her.
Well it’s not. It’s about the 19 people shot .. the 6 individuals killed – and a guy with a gun who for some reason thought it was ok to shoot people.
She didn’t pull the trigger…but for the last 2 years she and Sharon Angle, and the rest of the fringe right have made it very clear that 2nd Amendment remedies are acceptable methods to get elected.
She’ll never get the blood off of her hand. And I’m sure some of her fellow fringies are scrubbing their rhetoric as fast as they can.

She does gloat and obsess over the First Family.
Right now she is in deep moose shit! Tomorrow a Rep is going to introduce Legislation to make a crime to do what palin did.
Here is a link to a petition yesterday when I signed it had 300 people now over 97K!
Tell Sarah Palin: Violent threats have consequences http://t.co/0Zm3yu7
I hope the “Lame Stream Media” will now start to hold her and any teabagger who incites violence responsible! We must call them out! Right now the RWNJ desperately trying to spin this, 1st it was done by “mexican hit men” then a radical leftwinger (because of the supposed books he said he read) today it is coming out he has ties with a RW Conservative “Think Tank” which has teaparty rhetoric & anti-Semitic hate. So now suddenly…”the guys is just a mentally ill crazy! (not left & certainly not RW!) Crazy’s4palin is saying he’s been stalking her since 07? Ummm 22 yrs old, so he would of been 18? Most 18 yr old have better things to do.
Oh and he didn’t join the army b/c they made him hold a bible, he’s a Atheist! (In reality it is reported he failed a drug test)
These RWNJ are spinning like tops and one can only imagine hows that refrigerator in Casa de palin?
Now ManSewer is trying to keep her meal ticket…without palin manswer is nothing but a failed screenwriter a dime a dozen in LA. Since she writes at 8th grade level, I don’t think job offers will be lining up.
We heard just last week a massive Iceberg ahead 4 screech! Now this. Its time that Karma rears its head. I’m so very sorry that b/c of Sarah Palin a congresswoman is fighting for her life, a darling 9 yr old is dead, a judge dead, a congressional staffer, and two other people who had the misfortune to be in Palins crosshairs!!!
God Damn her ass to hell! And all you braindead bots defending her ought to be ASHAMED of yourselves. But of course your paid to defend her aren’t you?

Look, I don’t actually believe the shooter was a RWNJ. I personally believe that he was a mentally off balance loner. Due to his age and the time he evidently began to decompensate, he may very well be schizophrenic. That usually appears around the age of 17-19 years of age.
He would follow what the voices told him to do. He would listen to what made him feel good, and he would do what he believed the voices wanted him to do.
He is a perfect hate radio target. He isn’t sane and he isn’t able to unscramble their message of hate and decide that it is just speech. If you listen to hate speech all the time, you will get upset. It is a normal response. You might turn it off, if you were sane. You might walk away.
But if you are not sane, you may very well act on the violent rhetoric and carry out your actions based upon what you hear.
JMHO … Sarah Palin reaches the mentally healthy and the mentally ill. She directs her hate speech and push to violence to the low hanging fruit. Guess she found one.
She is AS guilty as he is … and I suspect he was influenced by her rhetoric.

Sarah Palin’s penchant for blaming the logical consequences of her legendary stupidity on liberals and others never ceases to amaze me. She can never, ever admit that she could be wrong about something. She continues to provide reasons why providing her with a position of leadership would be foolhardy, because a true leader acknowledges responsibililty for his or her actions and words. At least 6 people are dead as a direct result of an unstable lunatic who already is anti-government I would not be surprised at all if this man had, and been encouraged by the incendiary rhetoric of Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, and others. Even before Ms. Gifford was shot, she was being threatened and her office was vandalized as a result of her support for the health care reform bill.
And she WAS targeted by Palin on her crosshairs map. As always, Palin managed to make this issue all about her, and of course, her minions ate it up.

They are not popular right now – shutting up and staying respectful might have been a smarter tactic, than going on the defense and trying to play the victim card.
19 people were shot, 6 people were killed.
Is it time for Sarah Palin to take her little crosshairs target and go home to her dead Lake Lucille?

Ugh; I hate to do this, but….
“Is holding Pelosi accountable for the healthcare bill demonizing her?”
DrSyn has a point.
However, it is misplaced. There has been no talk whatsoever (minus a few hair-brained lunatics) about us picking up our guns and fixing our problems by offing Palin. Then again, the same can be said for the right.
The problem is, the right’s lunatics are *PROMINENT* lunatics. Glenn Beck, Limbaugh, the Tea Party and their rallies, and Sharron Angle get a great deal more media attention, thus their ideas reach vastly larger numbers of people than batty ol’ Uncle Joe down the street. Or some random, anonymous commenter in a comments section that is rarely read.
The real demonizing is done by generalizations. Remove the humanity from someone. Make them become a “type.”
“Right Wing Conservatives.” “Lunatic Liberals.” “Idiotic Progressives” “Wingnut Libertarians.”
It’s like going to church. No one’s going to agree with absolutely everything their pastor [political party] says. But if they still agree with a good number of points, they will identify themselves as Catholic (Liberals), Mormon (Wingnut Libertarians), Baptists (Right Wing Conservatives), or Pagan (idiotic progressives).
And unless you get to a point where you truly, strongly disagree with a major point of the religion, you’ll identify yourself as that classification.
But… you’re still an individual. And so is everyone else.
No one should forget that.

I don’t need “toxic” and “mentally ill” in my life. These tragic and twisted, sick individuals do not need to be fed. And Sarah needs to grow up and realize that when you encourage VIOLENCE, it’s what you get back.
That being said, I prefer to believe that from a historical perspective, THIS is what Sarah will be known as from now on. She will be thought of and referred to as the provocateur and instigator of the Domestic Terrorism that resulted in the Tucson Massacre. The shooting of 19 people, with the resulting deaths of 6 individuals, including a Federal Judge and a 9 year old girl – that’s what she’s done. She and her ilk.
The Massacre in Tucson will forever be linked to the political violence Sarah Palin has encouraged in our country. This is her history. From now and in the future –
She is the author of the Tucson Massacre / an act of Political Domestic Terrorism.

Some people simply NEVER learn.

It is time to hold them accountable for their actions.
Sarah did not pull the trigger. She simply told a wack job it was ok to do so – and she helpfully provided a little MAP with crosshairs, and the Congresswoman name, Gabrielle Giffords.

This is all very interesting except for the fact that Jared Loughlin’s sick fascination with Rep Giffords started in 2007…BEFORE the Tea Party and BEFORE Sarah Palin gained national prominence. It is easy to blame, it is harder to take responsibility, and it is even harder to work to fix what led to this poor soul’s torture. It is becoming very clear that this young man’s demons were haunting him long before what many of you discuss here. Look for the solution in how we as a country address the mental health needs of our citizenry; in how we raise our children to elevate their discourse above violence; examine what we elevate as desirable in pop-culture (I recall a certain cross-hairs logo by the group Public Enemy – famous for lyrics glorifying cop killing – did you share the same outrage at the time?). The village it takes to raise a child here failed, and failed miserably. Work to make sure it doesn’t happen again, don’t blame.

You made a mistake there it was Ice-T and body count who did a heavy metal rap cop killer song, that was never published. The most memorable video of this had some WHITE GUYS enacting the story behind the video. a quick google search could’ve prevented you from making this fax paus.
ANYWAY, Charleton Heston used his wealth to squelch that. I wonder what he would have to say about Sarah’s Palin’s rhetoric? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6lwNyCo7O8 He seems to be all indignation here why, beause the guy was black? Where was the outrage over the Columbine children’s access to weapon’s Mr. NRA?
btw he mislead’s in the video, why must the so called “right” always be so dishonset? There was plenty to outrage people in the lyrics without making stuff up, however, there were no lyrics about sodomizing Gore’s 12 year olds. I guess if you really want to get the right frothing at the mouth appeal to their homophobia. here’s the lyrics: http://artists.letssingit.com/ice-t-lyrics-cop-killer-273cz83.
I personally AM apalled by copkiller especially the part where he asks ” what are you going to be when you grow up?” that encourages self destructive behavior, I don’t like grand theft auto video game either. Guess what? More people than Sarah Palin can be irresponsible.
Let’s reflect on this some more, in the US apartheid system, people had disagreements with JIM Crow for years. Martin Luther King. jr
incited them to peaceful revolution during the late 1950′s and the 1960′s. Many disgruntled people ( who had been disgruntled way before Martin LKing entered the scene) were inspired to take to the streets , protest and changed our country forever.
He’s given credit for that, including the Noble PEACE Prize.
Why should’ve Sarah Palin be given the analogous credit for her rhetoric inspiring disgruntled people to take action? A pair of handcuffs, sometime in jail and a civil suite? The secret service should’ve have locked her tail up within an hour of the shooting. She should spend as least as much time as MLKjr did in jail.

>>(I recall a certain cross-hairs logo by the group Public Enemy – famous
>> for lyrics glorifying cop killing – did you share the same outrage at the time?)
Actually, the Public Enemy logo had gunsight crosshairs on a silhouette of one of its own members…explicitly pointing out how black people are targeted by the mainstream and by the police. And ‘Copkiller’ was by Ice-T (who plays a right-wing conservative COP on a major television show), not by PE. PEs lyrics clearly decry violence. And I don’t even like or follow rap music. Serious logic fail on your part.
Palin didn’t pull the trigger. Palin didn’t say, “Go shoot liberals in the head.” However, Palin has consistently created an environment where the mentally ill or those prone to violence feel that violence is an acceptable political tactic, and she needs to be held accountable for that.
The shooter is clearly mentally ill; most likely an undiagnosed, untreated schizophrenic (a direct result of our failed medical system). But that does not in any way excuse the right’s overwhelming use of violent imagery and the dehumanization of its opponents that makes crazy people think it’s okay to shoot Democrats in the head.
The worst part (aside from, you know, dead people and dead children)? Giffords is a CONSERVATIVE Democrat, and a former Republican. Actual liberals and actual progressives should be very, very careful around the type of crazy that thinks anybody currently in public office is other than moderate-right.

You make a good point. However everyone who knows him stated that he started changing when he turned about 17 years of age which I believe was 2007. He obviously followed Giffords’ since he was interested in her. He would have followed her website, gone to her Town Halls – (in fact we know he did).
If he followed her closely, he would have seen her on TV or on the internet (he was a local individual) when the Palin Target on Congresspeople was posted. If he was obsessed with her, he would have seen her talk about the Bullseyes, the Targeting of her District. He would have heard about Palin.
That is, unless he lived under a rock – which appears to be your take on the situation.
You now have a mentally ill man – possibly schizophrenic – who closely follows Ms. Giffords actions/ and words.
Why do you then refuse to take it to the next level?
Schizophrenia often develops in the late teens. Perhaps in his own mind, Sarah Palin gave him permission with her hate diatribes, to carry out his own wishes?
When you stoke violence – you are responsible, just like if you yell “fire” in a crowded theater. Politicians need to be aware that not all of their constituents may be 100% wired correctly.
The fact that Palin is scrubbing (or trying to) all of her diatribe says volumes.
Sorry – she stoked the violence – she connected with her minion – she’s to blame as far as I am concerned.
Let history judge her.

You are RESPONSIBLE for what you say because words have meanings, as well well consequences. And, you know as well as I that there are people out there, less than balanced people on BOTH sides of the aisle that should NOT be given any reason or provocation or encouragement to go off the deep end. Wow. Another post. There are so many things wrong, where does one begin?
“Where’s the accountability?” What evidence is there that this shooting was in any way precipitated by anyone’s rhetoric?
Why is it Palin’s targeting Giffords’ seat and not Markos Moulitsas’ bulls-eyeing her with war metaphors that is so reprehensible? Or even President Obama’s fighting metaphors?
I believe the “Palin is a victim” meme exists only to counteract the thousands of the faux-outraged like you who insist on blaming her for the actions of a madman with no evidence what-so-ever. None.
But keep searching for a logical argument to prove Sarah Palin is unfit for American consumption. Because after-all, that is what this is all about, isn’t it? I believe this is rule 12, no? — ‘”Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. ‘
Too bad for you that you are clearly unable to make a coherent argument to accomplish that goal.

Well, Sarah is more a tweeter than a blogger, but they both reach a lot of people with their views. And since the shooter was a liberal, and thus more likely to view the Kos site rather than Palin’s, and KOS bulls-eyed her just 48 hours before the incident, well, according to what passes for logic around here, he’s clearly guilty of murder. Her defenders try to have it both ways by suggesting that she is no more significant than a blogger and also by supporting her bid for the presidential nomination. But the fact that she has quickly moved to expunge incendiary material from her website shows very clearly that she knows she’s dead wrong. My heart and prayers go out to all the victims living or dead, as well as their families. I have the deepest respect for Rep. Gifford, who was carrying out her duties in the face of very real threats, and it looks like any political aspirations Palin has had will be dead in the water, especially her presidential ambitions.

Of course, you realize that the next comment from the Palin camp will be that Giffords was irresponsible in allowing Christina Taylor Green to attend her meeting.

This whole banter is pointless. It just shows how polarized the Country is. Left Vs. Right. Everyone believes what they choose to believe and rarely waver unless bullied / intimidated by some aspect to do so.
Time to move on to more important topics of the day.
GO DUCKS!!!

This is exactly what the right wants to happen, move along nothing to see here. Forget this ever happened. For me, this is the important topic of the day and if you are tired of it, feel free to move on.
You are correct though, nothing will change. The right will still come to the defence of those repsonsible for ugly/violent rhetoric, even after this tragedy. I don’t need someone telling me what topic should be more important than the deaths of innocent people.

The Open Society and Its Enemies (1945) Karl Popper
paradox of tolerance:
Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. — In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law, and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal.
I didn’t mean to imply a certain “enemy”, each person is free to think/decide for themselves about specific political/religious ideas/ideologies.
My point of quoting Karl Popper (one of the great philosophers of science in my opinion) was that those who resort to violence, those who promote violence/who deny rational/reasonable problem solving (as if logic/reason/evidence were deceptive), are the enemies of a free/open society.
Which would include Islamists or any other political/religious ideology/group/individual.

But using your “atmosphere of hatred and violence” logic can be applied to movies, videogames, and comic books. Where does that get us? Censorship and partisan fingerpointing.

Sarah, I liked your article; however, I did read and reread The Telegraph article to which you linked and nowhere did I find that the Secret Service has asked Ms Palin “to walk” back her rhetoric. Do you have another source for this information or did I miss it in The Telegraph article?
I do wish we could dial back the vitriol in the comments and think a bit about evidence and causality. I am also concerned about the search for a false equivalency here. It seems clear that the political right has been too cavalier in making statements that allude to violence or to the potential for violence.

She can’t walk her hate talk back.
Perhaps some of these jack asses will finally realize that what they say does have consequences.
For THEM, as well as the innocent victims of their strident hate talk and gun and bullet talk.
It might be finally getting through to that foolish and brainless woman in Wasilla, who I call Lady Macbeth of Wasilla.
Her days in politics are numbered, the clock is ticking away.

Agreed – words have consequences.
Mental abuse/verbal abuse is much more painful than physical abuse. You can heal, but you cannot erase the words.
Words do have consequences. Before screaming to “take someone out”, maybe think about who you are directing the words to. There are people who will take this seriously.

I predict that the ego that is Palin WILL run for President in 2012.
I have never heard anything from her to indicate she has accepted responsibility for her actions EVER.
She is a narcissistic sociopath with episodes of mania, a pathological liar and rabidly paranoid. Even under the circumstances the last 3 days, it’s still “all about her” and “her stalker”. She f*cking NUTS.
Just what we need in office.

what an excellent article. I could not agree more with your point of view. Palin is a coward and we can only hope that this episode is the end for her. She needs to get out of the middle of the american conversation so the country can begin to solve problems rather than play rhetorical russian roulette toward the next election cycle.
This is all Palin has actually learned about politics. How to create an enemy and spur a rather small group to vote for or with her based on the imagined battle with the imagined enemy.

Sarah Palin is a malignent narcissist. She is just as mentally unstable as Loughner, just in a different way. Narcissist live in their own reality and in that reality— #1) they really feel they are are never wrong —see item #3 and #4 here—– #2) they honestly feel victimized #3) —they really feel God is on their side and guides their actions —#4) they really feel people who disagree with them are enemies who want to literally destroy them and —#5) they really feel it is ok to stop these enemies in any way they can because THEY FEEL IT IS SELF-DEFENSE AND SINCE THEY ARE DOING GOD’S WORK, GOD IS GIVING THEM PERMISSION TO DEFEND THEMSELVES.
They are NOT insane and DO understand right from wrong per McNaughton Rule of Law BUT THEY LIVE IN A DIFFERENT REALITY AND LOGIC /CRITICAL THINKING ARE NOT PART OF THEIR REALITY.
They are basically cowards due to their insecurities ( which caused them to retreat to this bubble of false reality) and are expert AT MANIPULATION OF OTHERS.
This is why the term GRIFTER is often applied to Palin and similar narcissit.
Google the book “Son of a Grifter” by Kent Walker. It is about his mother and step brother Santee Kimes and Kenny Kimes. It is an excellent insight into how an true narcissist mind works on a daily basis.
Yes, my mother was a narcissist and those other children of narcissist know that we ar eable to recognize them instinctively unlike people who have not been exposed to them previously.
Palin unfortunately opened the door and shows the strategy of “going rogue” to other narcissist i.e. Joe Miller in Alaska and lowered the civility bar in political rehorteric allowing Angle and Miller and Bachman and Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity etc. to up their own bombast. Beck, Limbaugh etc—in my opinion—are worse in a way because they are just greedy and more self aware of playing to the lowest common demoninator while Palin, who is AND EXTREME MALIGNENT NARCISSIST REALLY IS LIVING IN HER BUBBLE AND REALLY DOES ACT OUT OF HER MENTALLY UNSTABLE BELIEFS.
Yes, Beck, Limbaugh especially are narcisist too, to the point of mental instability but Palin is very very extreme.
Sarah Palin WILL NEVER SEE HERSELF AS SHE TRULY IS. She is too mentally ill.
Sarah Palin will draw more blood and perhaps by her own hand. This is because she is in a very unfortunate situation for someone as ill as she is. She is literally known through out this country and abroad. There is NO place for her to go and “start over”–there is NO place where she can self destruct in private. Because of her fate i.e. actually being chose to run for VP, and her skill an manipulating the “lowest common demoninator” among us, she perceives she is valid and claims of her mental instability will be ignored.
When she fall, she will fall publically, and from a great height.
There will be blood by her own hand.
Sarah Palin is validated by ANYONE making this ultimate sacrifice —to give up their own life by killing for her—and it is the affirmation, the attention, the approval, her narcissistic dead soul thrives on.
Loughner is exactly the type of raw material who listen to narcissist, grifters, con-artist who know how to “play” them. And she loves this.

Discursive psychology is a dangerous tool in the wrong hands. Politicians use discourse to manipulate the general population. Sarah Palin is either particularly ignorant, or particularly evil.
Good luck America!

I agree with your notion in the article that politicians should be held accountable for their vitriolic rhetoric. After all, with rights come responsibility. Even the right to freedom of speech and assembly come with the adjacent responsibility to be held accountable for the probable results of the message.
However, your general theme was contradicted early in the article when you referred to Palin’s rhetoric as being spoken with “malice aforethought.” As you probably know, the term malice aforethought typically refers to the intent requirement of first degree murder, where the act is done with the conscious intent to cause death or great bodily harm. It’s difficult to believe that you actually think that Palin acted with this sort of intent.
The responsibility that adheres to freedom of speech applies not only to politician, but to us as well.
