On his Fox News program tonight Glenn Beck used the rape of Lara Logan as evidence that he was correct about Egypt. Beck said, “While everyone was saying oh listen this is great. In this crowd, we found out today that an American woman was being sexually assaulted by 200 men in this crowd,” so because Lara Logan was raped, Glenn Beck was correct on Egypt.

Here is the video from Media Matters:

Beck continued to press his caliphate conspiracy by claiming that there are widespread human rights violations across the Middle East. Later he turned his attention to Egypt, “Human rights violations, well let’s go to Egypt. Yes, yes we are. Without getting into the horrifying specifics mainly for this individual’s family, we know that there were at least 300 people killed, countless injured and abused, and while we were watching this jubilant scene. You remember this on Friday? And this was the only program. We were mocked and ridiculed. Said don’t pay attention to this scene. Don’t do it. This is the beginning this isn’t the end.”

He then used the rape of Lara Logan as evidence that he was correct about Egypt, “While everyone was saying oh listen this is great. In this crowd, we found out today that an American woman was being sexually assaulted by 200 men in this crowd. She was rescued by the second class citizens, women, and 20 members of the military.”

In fact, Glenn was completely wrong Egypt. He got nothing right, and now he is trying to graft his conspiracy theory on to the horrible rape and attack of Lara Logan. Beck tried to present veneer of sympathy and class, but his true intention here was to exploit and politicize a gang rape.

What happened to Lara Logan does not make Beck any more correct on Egypt than if I claimed that all members of the Tea Party are racists some skinheads attended a Tea Party rally. The really sad part is that Beck could not even get the few details that he did provide correct. 200 men did not rape her. Logan was repeatedly raped as a crowd of 200 people celebrated Mubarak’s resignation.

There is something sickening about Beck’s willingness to use the rape of a woman as evidence that exonerates his conspiracy theory. We don’t know why Lara Logan was targeted. It could have been because she was a journalist. It could have been because she was working for a western news network. It could have been a random crime of opportunity during the chaos. The only people who know why this happened are the men who raped her.

Being that Logan had been previously detained by the Mubarak government, it is very possible that angry Mubarak supporters, who were already blaming the West for his resignation, were behind the attack. It was classless of Beck to use such a horrific incident as validation of his conspiratorial fear mongering. Glenn Beck was wrong about Egypt, and he was wrong to exploit the rape Lara Logan. Beck may be trying to save his fame, but with each passing day, he only throws more dirt on his professional grave.
