Something has happened in the last two weeks that should dispel the widely held misconceptions that the “mainstream” media is liberal and generally supports Democrats. For the second weekend in a row, no labor leaders, such as the AFL-CIO’s Richard Trumka, have been invited (as of now) on the Sunday morning shows.
Greg Sargent explains what’s at stake here, “…if there were ever a time the networks would want to book labor officials to appear, you’d think it would be now. The Wisconsin standoff is the most important domestic political story in the country right now, and as many commentators at those same networks have pointed out, both sides view this battle as ground zero in a national war that may determine the fate of organized labor in America.
But labor officials are beginning to fear that none of them will be invited on this weekend to give voice to the labor point of view. This, even as tough-talking anti-union governor Chris Christie is set to do a major appearance on CBS on Sunday.
One AFL-CIO official tells me that reps for the AFL-CIO and other unions reached out to all the big three network shows — ABC’s This Week, NBC’s Meet the Press, and CBS’ Face the Nation — to ask if they would invite on any labor officials. Thus far the answer has been cool to indifferent, the official says.
No labor officials have yet been booked to appear.”
Liberals/Progressives have long scoffed that the “mainstream” media was liberal. After all, most newspapers and TV stations, not to mention the Big Four networks, are owned by corporations. Yet those on the right never seem to comprehend that. Nor do they understand that big business favors Republicans big large margins and only contribute to Democrats to hedge their bets win and retain some influence when Democrats control the levers of power.
Today, we have one of the clearest examples yet that Republicans that control the message in the “mainstream” media. Who are the booked guests so far? Republican Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin, who is in hot water over his attempt to bust unions via a budget bill, Republican Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey over whom the “mainstream” media is slobbering as some kind of star (The New York Times is slobbering all over him this weekend in a piece by noted power worshiper Matt Bai) and Republican Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana, who had the Indiana Legislature pull a union busting bill similar to Wisconsin because he was catching too much heat.
Notice what was missing? The opposing view point. Why might that be? Richard Trumka, the head of the AFL-CIO and probably one of the most charismatic leaders Big Labor has had in ages, has never been on any of the Sunday morning bobblehead shows. Wouldn’t a “liberal” “mainstream” media have had Trumka on at least once by now? He’s been AFL-CIO President since September 16, 2009, and was President of the United Mine Workers from 1982 to 1995.
The Sunday morning bobblehead shows usually have on “centrist” Democrats or even DINO’s like former Tennessee Representative Harold Ford, Jr. — people who enjoy throwing basic Democratic Party values under the bus. Look at the aforementioned Ford. Once he was defeated in his attempt to represent Tennessee in the Senate, he moved to New York to work for one of the big Wall Street investment firms (Merrill Lynch). He got bored with that and “explored” an attempt to primary the appointed Kirsten Gillibrand. Given that he was laughed out of polite company because his only constituency was Wall Street, he decided to contest Gillibard and is now working for a different Wall Street firm (Morgan Stanley).
In fact, the only unabashed liberal who’s on the Sunday bobblehead shows is economist Paul Krugman, who appears on the roundtable segment of the ABC Sunday morning show. He gets to spend his time batting down the lies and disinformation of Washington Post columnist, and noted Conservative, George Will.
So I ask, is the “mainstream” media liberal? And if it is, why are so many Republicans on week after week? One would think that if liberals were running the media, they’d provide a wee bit of time to their own side and by side, I mean liberal Democrats – people who embody the opposite of the hard core conservatives the Sunday shows book. Instead, we get hard right Republicans versus mid right centrist Democrats and all the while the conservatives have the temerity to complain about the liberal media. There is no liberal media, and the failure of the Sunday shows to book an equal number of labor representatives and liberals to counter the conservative’s message proves that.
Update: After a coordinated campaign of Tweeting and phone calls to Fischer and show host David Gregory, there was a late change Thursday evening for Sunday’s Meet the Press. The President of the AFL-CIO, Richard Trumka, will be one of the guests for the show, along with Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker(R). The change was sent out by Meet the Press’ Executive Producer Betsy Fischer. It’s telling that it took a herculean effort from bloggers and unions supporters to even have Mr. Trumka given the union side of the argument this weekend.

The Right knows damn well there is no liberal media, but by propagating this meme, they (a) discredit any reasonably objective reporting as “liberal propaganda”, and (b) keep moving the “center” rightward. As for Harold Ford, he’s just pig-eyed jealous that another light-skinned Eurafrican got to be the first “black” president.

for those who think CNN is a liberal network, they have had Scott Walker on nearly 24/7 with very little of the opposition speaking.CNN shows Scott Walker’s full speeches and just snippets of any retort by union officials or protesters.
Nor will they discuss the actual data behind the so-called budgetary crisis in Wisconsin

CNN used to be a fairly objective network. Now they’re trying hard – and succeeding in being Fox Jr. They’ve sold out to the devil.
Another great post! Thanks!

FTA – “we get hard right Republicans versus mid right centrist Democrats and all the while the conservatives have the temerity to complain about the liberal media. ”
This hits the nail squarely on the head. The “liberal media” myth is proof that the old expression by Joseph Goebbels is being used by American conservatives: “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it….”
There is no mainstream liberal media bias, it is corporate media that looks out of the interests of big business (starting with the massive media conglomerates first), which coincides with the Republican agenda, since they are the ones who favor large corporations over the little people.
Even NPR, which is probably the most legit form of mass journalism and truth telling left in America (why the cons want to kill it) cites 4 times as many conservative think tanks as liberal ones: http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1180
The conservatives are doing this on purpose, initially to get their ideologues on shows to “balance” them out (ie. the news, then refocused with GOP/corporate talking points), and now to control the message and broadcast their propaganda.

Most of MSM does have a liberal bias, and even in these stories you can see the left-leaning in the stories themselves. They don’t have to come outright and say “unions good, walker bad” to prove their liberal bias, just the way they word things and set the tone. Most MSM (CNN, MSNBC, FT, etc) are left leaning, just as much as you believe FOX is right leaning (and I agree, it is). But it won’t allow a show to be truly conservative, otherwise that show will get relegated to internet-only, ala Judge Napolitano. And Rachel Maddow not liberal biased? C’mon, even liberals know she’s biased, and doesn’t hold it back.
All MSM is propaganda, though. Regardless of a right or left spin, it’s always got a pro-elitist spin… CNN and MSNBC will placate the liberals, Fox placates the conservatives. The elitist deliver the talking points, the hosts/writers develop the lean using those points, and the R’s and D’s commence to battling each other, furthering the divide between us while they continue to rob us blind.

Riiiiiight. No liberal bias in the media. I’ll remember that next time I see Chris Matthews trying to hump Obama’s leg. I’ll remember that next time ABC runs around-the-clock coverage on a war, as they did in 2003 on the eve of hostilities, with the title “Iraq: When Diplomacy Fails” clearly appearing next to Peter Jennings’s head every time it cut back to him. Maybe the Sunday talk shows have tried to get union officials to appear but they can’t find any union officials who can pronounce words longer than two-syllables. There have been times when the pendulum has swung too far in favor of business and labor was treated like animals, but that pendulum has swung (and stayed swung) WAY too far in the other direction for, oh, the last 50 years or so. Unions exist for one reason: to keep ignorant, lazy, unqualified people in well-paying jobs. I’m from Michigan and there’s only one reason this state’s economy is in the toilet and it’s spelled UAW. (And no, I’m not a business owner–just a guy with my eyes wide open.)

ah ah, lets not forget the facvorite arguement of the right. becks ratings are higher than anyone elses. Well Jennings ratings make Fox look like they just started.
What is Michigan’s primary industry? Tourism? Are you trying to say that the unions ran the Big 3? Are you saying that the Big 3 had to sign contracts when they could have locked the unions out?

I have to give credit to some of the Fox News anchors and journalists, some have seemed to have a change of heart about the situation like Greta, at least it seemed to be that way. Unfortunately, its not a case for the majority.

Wow! And I was unaware the Sunday Morning Talk Shows were 100% of the media. Give me a break. There has been *no* coverage of the Democrats that fled the state. Also the Media refuse to relate the Offshore Drilling Ban to higher oil prices and refuse to name those who die in the War at the end of the News (like they did with a Republican President).
The Media also refuses to admit that or Democratic President is doing nothing for the US citizens in these Arab countries. He should be getting them out.

I think one point missed in this article is the small number of individuals that own all of the mainstream US media. The number of controlling firms in the media; newspapers, magazines, radio, television, books, and movies – has shrunk from 50 corporations in 1980 to 20 in 1990 and to only 6 in 2000. Those 6 are AOL Time Warner, The Walt Disney Company, Viacom, Comcast, and News Corporation Limited, and CBS Corporation recently split from Viacom.
These are the conglomerates that influence the voters and fund the political decisions:
Walt Disney Company top shareholder: Edward Ned Johnson Family (Democrat),
Viacom and CBS top shareholder: Sumner Redstone Family (Democrat),
Comcast top shareholder: Ralph J. Roberts Family (Democrat),
AOL Time Warner and News Corporation Limited top shareholder: Prince Alwaleed Ibn Talal, Saudi Royal Family (funded US Presidential Campaigns for George H Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and in 2008 Hillary Clinton)

I’m sorry, but Prince AlWaleed Bin Talal owning Fox sort of puts a damper on your premise. They gave over a million to RGA and clearly the Prince has anti-Isreal agenda. The money tells the story. Want to have your mind blown?
GE, which owns NBC, CNBC and the perceived left-leaning MSNBC, has directed 59 percent of its $1.62 million this 2010 election cycle to Republican political entities. Aso, between the 1990 and 1998 election cycles, Fox Inc., a subsidiary of News Corp., donated more than 60 percent of its nearly quarter-million dollar total to Democratic political interests, according to Center data.
Think about this: Fox News makes MONEY from having Obama in office just like MSNBC made money from having Bush in office. Opposition is good for the narrative which is good for the eyeballs which is good for the ad dollars. Just saying – it’s not as simple as who is in what party. It’s about money. And that is always complicated.

I for one believe Fox News was purposely created to be mocked & criticized. I’ve never seen such obvious stupidity – I won’t believe that’s a reality. Fox had several open opportunities to point out real problems created by Congressional Democrats, but they always go for sensational stories that simply encourage voter division.
The problems in our government are caused by political corruption, but the media decides the issues for us to disagree with. Every election, the public has all of this anger about some war, sleazy lobbyists, corporations listed as individuals, the FCC allowing a monopoly of the media and campaign promises that are never met …
But look at the issues the media decides we should debate over; Abortion, Gay Marriage, Health Care … Sorry – These are just the symptoms of a long existing corrupt government.

How dishonest – or misdirecting – can this blogger be!?!
The WI governor on CNN and other liberal media is grilled more with accusatory statements than balanced questions. His appearances, like with other so-called conservatives, is used not to give him positive exposure. Your whole blogitcle is replete with many such sham statements. My guess is the Union leaders are laying low from media in order to dodge thoughtful, probing questions in order to hide their true collectivist share-the-wealth colors, failing to realize that yes-we-are-liberal media are incapable of hiding their own Red-Square colors.
When American media has become as Pravdaesque as it’s current state, it’s overkill for you guys to even bring this subject up.

O yes – the unions are trying to hide their true colors by protesting publicly. The unions are trying to hide their true colors by writing and talking and posting videos of their reasoning on the internet for the entire world to see.
Thay sounds to me like someone who wants to be identified and heard directly. X
But lets turn that analysis on the Kochs. Everything their money touches is connected to their Market Based Management model based on the Austrian School of economics at the turn of the century. But do they ever actually publicize their connections? Do they speak publicly about their extreme viewpoints?
