Is it just me, or is Donald Trump starting to make anyone else miss the heady sophisticated days of Sarah Palin? During a radio interview today, Trump gave his assessment of why Obama was able to beat Clinton in 2008. Trump blamed, “The Blacks,” and then claimed that people voted for Obama based on race, not merit.
During an interview with Fred Dicker on Talk1300 things got 1950′s style racial when while discussing recent poll numbers, Trump lamented that he probably wouldn’t get the support from black people that he deserved. According to The New York Observer’s PolitickerNY, Trump blamed race for Obama ‘s election,
“I tell it like it is,” Trump said. “[Y]ou’ll hear a political reporter go on and say it had nothing to do with race. But how come she had such a tiny piece of the vote? And you know, it’s a very sad thing.
“I have a great relationship with the blacks. I’ve always had a great relationship with the blacks. But unfortunately, it seems that, you know, the numbers you cite are very, very frightening numbers.”
Dicker said, somewhat rhetorically, that votes should always be based on merit, not on race.
“If that were the case, why did Hillary Clinton do so poorly?” Trump asked.
Trump has apparently decided to add the racists to his birther coalition. The blacks, seriously? What is this 1957? Donald Trump was trying to marginalize and minimize the Obama presidency by suggesting that it was only African-Americans who got him elected as some sort of race based novelty.
According to the Brookings Institute, here is an overview of how Obama fared demographically, “Unlike his two Democratic predecessors, Obama won the suburbs by a margin of 50-48 (compared with their losing margins of 5 and 2 points respectively in 2000 and 2004). And Obama did far better than Gore and Kerry among adults under age 45, college grads and persons with some college. He won the fast-growing Hispanic population by a 36 point margin (67-31) double Kerry’s margin of 18 points, as well as the black and Asian voter groups by significantly higher margins. And while whites, overall, still favored Republicans, GOP margins shrunk substantially from 2004 for white men (down to 16 point from 25) as well as white women (down to 7 points from 11). Some part of this decline in GOP margins can be attributed to the voting proclivities of new, younger whites (Obama actually carried whites 18-29 by 10 points, the only age group among whites he carried) and white college grads, who continued their long term political migration toward the Democratic Party.”
The Obama coalition is not only blacks. It is young white people, Hispanics, Asians, suburbanite, and college grads. In 2008, Obama brought a whole new demographic to the Democratic Party. Obama did win 95% of the African-American vote. However, African-American turnout was only 13% of the total vote, so it was mathematically impossible for Obama to win the presidency strictly with African-American support.
The same coalition that powered Obama in the fall also carried him to victory in the primaries. Clinton lost because younger Democrats supported Obama. Hillary’s support in the primaries in many ways McCain’s in the general. Hillary supporters were in general, older, whiter, and more conservative. Clinton like McCain ran strongest with older white men. This is the same demo that likely will be drawn to Trump.
Is there anything more ridiculous than Donald Trump talking about merit, when he has never held elective office in his life, and he believes that his first run for office should be the presidential? What has Trump ever done in the political arena to be worthy of presidential consideration?
Donald Trump was trying to play the race card already. The early Trump campaign strategy looks like an appeal straight to the gutter centered on conspiracy theories, racism, and hate.
Trump seems to already have the Republican primary audience pegged. He knows what they want, and he is going to give it to them.
I’m sure that the 25%-30% of Americans who agree with Trump will support him in the primaries and beyond, while the rest of the country including “The Blacks” will be reelecting Barack Obama.
