Mike Huckabee showed what kind of presidential candidate he is going to be by going on Fox News and attacking Superman for renouncing his citizenship. Huckabee said, “It is disturbing that Superman who has always been an American icon is now saying I’m not going to be a citizen.”
Here is the video from Media Matters:
When asked about Superman renouncing his citizenship, Mike Huckabee said, “Well it is a comic book, but, it is disturbing that Superman who has always been an American icon is now saying I’m not going to be a citizen. I think it’s a part of a bigger trend of Americans almost apologizing for being Americans.
Huckabee invoked the George W. Bush they hate us for our freedoms shtick, “Here’s the point that I think we need to make from a policy standpoint, this idea that if we quit being so American our enemies will love us. What kind of idiocy is that? That’s not going to make them love us more. They don’t hate us just because we are Americans. They hate us because we represent everything they consider to be horrible, individual freedom, individual responsibility, a sense in which we have liberties that are not confined to somebody else’s idea of what we ought to be doing with our every moment of every day.”
He then blasted Superman and DC for what he called the globalist trend, and claimed the he would not be buying the 900th issue of Superman, “I’m not, and I’ll tell you I’m disturbed by this whole globalist trend. You know what I think we ought to be teaching young Americans that they’re young Americans. That it means something to be an American…I’m tired of kids of kids coming up with this attitude that there is something horrible about this country. There’s something great about this country, and we ought not to make ourselves think that we would be better off if we lost our borders. We lost our identity, and we became some part of a great big stew pot of idiocy where we forgot that we are the greatest country on earth because of who we are, not in spite of it.”
Does Mike Huckabee realize that Superman is literally an illegal alien? His parents weren’t born in this country, yet they snuck their child across our borders in the hope that he could have a better life. (This was due to the fact that his home planet was about to explode, but that’s a minor detail).
Superman was the ultimate anchor baby.
If Huckabee would apply the Republican ideology to Superman, he would say that The Man of Steel is actually taking jobs away from American born superheroes, like Batman and Spiderman. Superman is an illegal. Did Superman ever apply for citizenship? I don’t know, and let’s not even get started on the birth certificate issue.
If anybody out there still thinks that Mike Huckabee is not running for the Republican nomination, think again. Huckabee’s base is the religious right. This attack on Superman, which also tried to appeal to neo-cons, immigrant bashers, and tea partiers was a stump speech. Huckabee knows that if he has to revive the culture wars if he is going to have any chance of winning the Republican nomination.
Sure he sounds like a reactionary fool, but his base composed of reactionary fools who think that George W. Bush was a better president than Obama.
Mike Huckabee and those who believe that they hate us for our freedoms don’t get that they hate us because under George W. Bush our foreign policy violated every freedom that we supposedly stood for. We invaded Iraq so that we could take their oil and impose our definition of freedom on them. We opened up secret prisons and tortured people around the world, and the Patriot Act is the biggest violation of individual freedoms that was ever legislated in our nation’s history. Republicans love to talk about freedoms as they are taking them away.
The argument that Huckabee is using was dealt a deathblow by polling which found that Barack Obama and his foreign polices have returned America to being the most popular nation in the world.
This attack on Superman was a cheap attempt by Mike Huckabee to both appeal to his base and get himself a little media attention. Donald Trump has stolen the spotlight away from every potential Republican candidate. This was Huckabee’s attempt to take it back.
No matter where his citizenship rests, Superman will always be a greater symbol of American patriotism and freedom than the shallow and cynical Mike Huckabee ever could be.

Good grief!! Huckabee is a dodo – your article was great. I love how you pointed out that Superman was not a natural born citizen – but was an alien. At first when I saw your headline – I had my usual reaction to Huckabee. Don’t even like to read about him – but had to read your article. Glad I did – very entertaining.

The problem here is that Sups never said he was an American in any of the comic books. Even when he was fighting in the Dark Knight Returns after the Russians dropped a Nuke on poor Sups he grab the sunflower and asked Earth to help her adopted son. He was and is a citizen of the world and not just of one country. The quote “truth justice and the American way” never appeared in any of the original Superman comics only after it appeared on the TV show in the 50s did it then become an ethos in the Sups mythos.

You have GOT to be kidding me. With all the problems we have in the USA, Huckabee and FOX focus on this? Perhaps Huckabee should do some research; Superman has always claimed to be a son of Kansas; BUT, as always considered the entire EARTH as his adopted home. Grow up Mikey.

So this is how Huck would govern? Complaining about a comic book storyline and likening it to his view of the President, who has never actually apologized to any nation, but who cares about facts when you have comic books? Fox is going to be the downfall of this country. They hate women, hate unions, hate any social program, hate public education, and love those corporate dollars. Wonder who’s going to work for those corporations when all our young people are stupid, hungry and homeless?

Let me give you hint Huckabee, don’t send them to Sweden.
Because if you do, there’s a good chance they will tell you they want to stay here, when you come back and ask them if they are ready to return to the US.
And that applies to the other Scandinavian, and many of the European countries as well. Include in that group, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, and there you have it.
If Americans weren’t so poor and undereducated, they would have the possibility to travel to other countries, and therefore see what they are missing.
I guess that’s as good a reason as any for keeping them in poverty, and stupid.
No ? ?

I’m all for Huckabee in 2012. His opponents have no real ammo to use against him so they resort to super petty things like this. Oh, and making fun of his name. That’s alway a sign of great political knowledge. (eye roll) Wouldn’t it be great if there were a filter that would only allow comments from those who knew what they were talking about and had something substantive to say?

This is the same man who made the foolish comments that the president grew up in Kenya with his father (who left the family when he was 2 and whom he saw only once again at 10) and his paternal grandfather (whom he never knew). It’s very well-known that Obama grew up with his white mother, for 4 years with his Indonesian stepfather, and his white maternal grandparents. When called on this nonsense, he said he “misspoke.” In addition, if he is stooping to respond to trivialities like “Superman,” then he is just as stupid as the other GOP potential candidates. I don’t respect anyone who panders to the lowest elements of his party, which he does along with the others.

Answer to number one….Obama
Number two……..when displaying the American flag and showing national pride has become a problem for many groups of individuals that get a lot of media attention, yeah that shows a very disturbing trend…..also I am a teacher I talk to kids and listen to them and this is what I see and hear…..from adults too. Disagreeing with an administration is one thing but when you hear people threaten to move out of the country or are ashamed of where they are from because the guy they did not vote for is in the White House (that goes for both parties), yeah I’d call that being ashamed. I do not try to push my politics on students (God forbid) and I did not vote for Obama, but I respect the office and am very proud of him right now (doesn’t mean I’m going to agree on everything, but at least I’m open-minded).

there are no circumstances under which Obama apologized for the United States. He may have apologized for George W. Bush and his murder spree, but not for America
Interesting. I’ve never seen anyone who had a problem displaying the American flag. I have seen a few people who are totally wack demeaning the United States but I would never have thought of them as coming from the left.

When you’re going around schmoozing with those who do not have Americas interests at heart and catering to their whims and desires, yeah that’s being apologetic (Oh because Bush was so horrible… give me a break….I don’t see anyone apologizing to us for Jimmy Cater.) Murder spree?……I’m not sure how to respond to that without sounding condescending. If you are referring to military retaliation, I guess it’s murder if you don’t like the President and heroism if you do. As for anti-patriotism never coming from the left…. you have to get out more…..just go to Hollywood I’m sure you’ll get a healthy dose quickly enough.
I’ll even expound on that briefly. A close friend of mine went to live in Saudi Arabia for a year because his wife was a nurse for a royal family. He learned over there that the reason we are so despised by many in the middle east is because of the ultra-liberal face that our Hollywood elite puts on America via music movies etc. These same people that try to rationalize that we are hated by the eastern world because of the political policies of Presidents they don’t like are vilifying America and anyone who is flag waving or military supporting. I could go on and on with examples of who these left wing celebrities are (Madonna or the girls from The View), but I’m sure you can find them on your own if you are so inclined. They are viewed as a corrupting influence by the fundamentalists that are involved in attacking us. (Yes it’s scary) This is not an opinion, it is a fact from a reliable source. My point is we must be vigilant without being paranoid, cooperative without being naive……and stop blaming George W. Bush for everything! No leader deserves blind loyalty or unyielding disdain. I don’t hate Obama because it’s just as irrational as hating Bush! They are both well meaning Americans…….. and for that matter so is Superman.

I see you have fallen into the talking points Very nicely. first the president does not hang around with people who do not have America’s interests at heart. He was not good friends with Bill Ayers, the other gentleman (van) is not a communist. step away from the Kool-Aid
and yes, President Bush went on a murder spree in Iraq. That had nothing to do with patriotism or anything else.
You know it’s funny, there was a documentarian on TV little while back that had to do with the Middle East. It had interviews and it was people from Saudi Arabia and one of the things was that they love our music, they love our bluejeans, they love our money, but they do not like our politics. Nor do they like people killing Muslims. I’m sorry, but your talking points are just absolutely absurd

Very nice; my info did not come from a t.v. documentary, but first hand. Yes the young people do like the music, movies etc. that’s why the fundamentalists feel we are corrupting their culture. To insinuate that any of our leaders resort to military retaliation to defend us without having a heavy heart is crazy. Did you know that there were unfortunate situations during the Clinton administration and that civilians have been killed during this administration (of course you didn’t). Of course the the liberal media does not like to focus on that as they once did. I have friends in the military and retired military. Just because Obama is in charge don’t fool yourself into thinking war is any different. His intention of bringing home the troops may have been noble, but not realistic. As a matter of fact, instead he’s gotten us into another war. I say this with no animosity, it’s simply fact. I hope he is prepared for what is to come this is far from over. I’m behind him, unlike the left wishing Bush nothing but failure to make themselves look better, I’m rooting for our President. His success is our success. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that the American people have let this recent success overshadow how he’s destroying the economy by astronomically increasing our debt. And give the “It’s George Bush’s fault” whining a rest. About the Kool-Aid; nice try, that’s what you fall back on when you don’t like what you’re hearing. And you should certainly know about absurd talking points, that’s all you’ve got.

OUCH! LOL
well, now that we know your information is coming from the fundamentalists I think that puts you more into place.
number two. I did not think for a second that war would be any different just because Obama is in charge. And of course bringing home the troops is realistic because it is going to happen. I would not consider Libya a war as we only have a very, very small part in it now. as far as wishing Bush to be a failure, he was a failure. and I didn’t make anyone look any better for him being one.
so Obama is destroying the economy huh? why is he destroying the economy? He is spending money on the economy because of George W. Bush’s administration. It’s not my fault that you cannot accept the facts.
so now that you’ve discovered why Obama is spending money you could cross the talking point off that he is destroying our economy. I love the way you get nasty. It makes me feel good. Goodbye
