Bad News For Mitt Romney: 22% Of Americans Won’t Vote For A Mormon

A new Gallup poll released today found that 22% of Americans say that they would not vote for a presidential candidate if he/she is a Mormon.
The Gallup poll found that American voters’ bias against Mormon candidates remains steady. Twenty two percent of those surveyed said that they would not vote for a Mormon presidential candidate. The bias is steady across all party lines. Eighteen percent of Republicans, 19% of Independents, and 27% of Democratic respondents said that they would not vote for a Mormon. (I suspect some partisanship is at play, because some Republicans may be accepting the fact that Mitt Romney could be their nominee).
Age, gender, region, and religious preference didn’t matter. The numbers stayed the same across the board. The biggest divide in willingness to support a Mormon candidate was based on education level, as 86% of college graduates were willing to vote for a Mormon, compared to 66% of those with no college degree. (This poses a problem for Romney as lesser educated voters tend to support Republicans). Younger people age 18-34 (73%), Midwesterners (72%), and Protestants (74%) were the least likely to support a Mormon.
Mormon bias is some of the largest voting bias in the American electorate. Mormons had the third highest percentage of bias in the poll. Only gays and lesbians (67%), and atheists (49%) had a less support than Mormons. Unlike how the bias declined for blacks, Catholics, Jews, and women over the last half century, the Mormon bias has remained consistent. Since 1967, the bias against Mormon candidates has ranged from 17% who wouldn’t support to as high as 24%. In contrast, bias against Catholic candidates went from 33% in 1939 to 21% before JFK was elected to 7% in 2009.
The fact that there has been no downward trend in voting bias against Mormons in 50 years presents a big General Election problem for Mitt Romney, who may see the bias limited to individual states and primaries, but it will be a problem for him in the fall. The fact there is 18% more voter bias against Romney than Obama will make it even more difficult for him to beat the president in the fall.
It is sad that Mitt Romney’s faith matters to so many Americans. Anytime Romney’s faith is brought up to his supporters, they have a tendency to either follow their candidate’s lead or pretend like the problem doesn’t exist and scream bigot at whoever raises the question. If Mitt Romney wins the nomination, he won’t be able to run from his faith. He will have to address the issue.
The whisper campaign against Romney within the Republican Party during the 2008 primary campaign was brutal. I suspect that is only a matter of time before his GOP rivals begin using his faith against him in 2012. (My money is on Ed Rollins and the Michele Bachmann campaign playing the dirtiest pool).
Mitt Romney should be judged on his own merits. His faith shouldn’t matter, but to over 1/5 of voters it does. At the end of the day Mitt’s lack of personality, flip-flops, or ability to speak for hours and say nothing at all might not matter.
Mitt Romney’s 2012 hopes may all come down to how well he handles the Mormon issue.

Wow, this is appalling because it’s about the Christian dominance in American politics- not how he would implement his faith, his policies, etc.
I can’t bear Mitt’s out of touchness with the working class, but this makes me sad for him and his family.
Why won’t this country GROW up re religion? It’s like we are all puritans. It’s absurd. Run an atheist! Run a Mormon! Run people with GOOD ideas and the desire to represent the PEOPLE. That said, I don’t want any religious extremist in office from any organized religion.

The fact that Romney hasn’t held an elected position, or a even a job, in over 5 years bothers me way more than his faith. He’s become the professional candidate…not unlike Newt, Santorum, Cain, and Santorum. Out of touch indeed, the Mormonism is just one more negative, to add to his flip flopping, and history with Bain Capital.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s not his faith that bothers me. It’s the fact that he is an out-of-touch flip-flopper whose politics seem to be a matter of expediency. I also find his history of saving a company at the expense of workers unsettling, and he was just like the other 6 dwarfs in bashing the president without offering any solutions.

Exactly. Mormonism, in the abstract, isn’t the problem. The Udall family has provided excellent public servants, and had one of the Udalls been a candidate for president, he would likely have had my vote. The problem with Mitt is that he is a weaselling, self-serving little liar. Also, he is a Republican (assuming that is a different thing). John Huntsman is a Republican and a Mormon, and although the Republican part is still an insurmountable bar, he strikes me as the best of the possible Republican candidates. His Presidency would likely leave us with a country we would recognize. A Dominionist presidency would not. As for Mitt, I think he’d do whatever was good for Mitt.

Anne and Reynardine are right on the mark about Mitt Romney. Like them, I don’t care if he’s Mormon (hell, I voted for whatever Udall is my NM senator and would vote for Harry Reid). I can’t stand Mitt Romney because he comes across as a phony, snake-oil salesman, flip-flopper, you fill in the rest.

I agree its sad that religion plays a part. Do we remember JFK did not start an inquisition? From what I gather of Romney, I seriously doubt there would be a pledge drive. Out of Bachman and Palin I think there certainly would be however. And law changes to go with it providing for religion to take hold.
Its all sickening. The whole American thing is getting sickening.

I don’t think Mitt is qualified and I think part of his problem is religion – not Mormonism in particular but the emphasis Christianity places on social issues based on its religious doctrine

As someone who has lived my whole life surrounded by Mormons, do not be deceived that their agenda would be much different than the fundamentalists. Men are in charge, and women are subservient. The Mormons are not accepting of other religions and consider them “not true.” We’ve often joked that if there was some natural disaster, we would be left to fend for ourselves, as they only care for their own brothers and sisters. Look how they have sent their missionaries out all over the world, and note the continual rise in church membership. The Mormon church is a business that controls the state of Utah–do you think a Mormon president wouldn’t try to change things to a Mormon agenda. I do not consider Mormonism a religion, and many authors and experts also agree it is one of the largest cults in the world.

One fact remains, while Huntsman and Reid are also Moromons, to some degree, anyone can quickly assess that they are fairly independent of their church, while Romney is pretty devout. As anyone can attest who lives in Utah, where a large majority of the LDS faithful have a serious love affair with the Mitt. They do not share the same admiration for either Jon Huntsman or Harry Reid. People need look no further than the political climate here in Utah to see how the church would become involved in national politics if Romney were to be elected. See also: The White Horse Prophecy. And check out this guy: Cleon Skousen, Romney is a follower of his concepts. This is why Mitt is scary. Utah just elected Mike Lee who is also an admirer of Skousen.
