The Obama campaign quickly responded to Michele Bachmann’s claim that we can’t afford four more years of Barack Obama, by filleting Bachmann based on her own voting record.
During her speech launching her campaign Bachmann said,
We cannot continue to kick the can of our problems down the road, because they are problems of today and not tomorrow.
We cannot continue to rack up debt on the backs of future generations.
We can’t afford an unconstitutional health plan that costs too much and is worth so little.
And we can’t afford four more years of failed leadership at home and abroad.
We can’t afford four more years of millions of Americans out of work or in jobs that pay too little to support their families.
We can’t afford four more years of a housing crisis that is devaluing our homes and making home ownership impossible for many Americans.
We can’t afford four more years of a foreign policy that leads from behind and doesn’t stand up for our friends and stand up to our enemies.
We can’t afford four more years of Barack Obama.
In a statement OFA fired back,
“Congresswoman Bachmann talks about reclaiming the American Dream but her policies would erode the path to prosperity for middle class families. She voted for a budget plan that would extend tax cuts for the richest Americans on the backs of seniors and the middle class while ending Medicare as we know it. Congresswoman Bachmann introduced legislation to repeal Wall Street oversight – risking a repeat of the financial crisis — and while she voted to preserve subsidies for oil and gas companies she opposes making the investments necessary to enhance America’s competitiveness and create the jobs of the future.”
Short, sweet and to the point. Michele Bachmann may be a tea party darling and she is beloved by the hard right, but she would be surgically dissected by the Obama team in a fall campaign. Her voting record is chocked full of goodies that are 30-60 second attacks ads waiting to happen.
Oh that voting record:
Bachmann voted NO on food safety. She voted NO on extending unemployment benefits, and she voted NO on extending the flood insurance program. She also voted NO on financial reform, and NO small business lending. She voted YES to abolish the practice of federal funding of presidential elections. She voted NO on the repeal of DADT. She voted NO on the expansion of hate crimes legislation. In 2007, she voted NO on the establishment of the Office of Congressional Ethics, and she voted a big fat NO on pay as you go. (As you know only a true fiscal conservative would reject the idea that programs actually have to be paid for before they are passed).
The paragraph above isn’t even the big stuff. Bachmann wants to cut veterans benefits and their Social Security disability. She is all for the Ryan budget and the killing of Medicare, and she supports making the Bush tax cuts permanent.
Over at the Margin of Error blog, Henry Joe Enten ran some numbers to determine how conservative Michele Bachmann really is. He found that, “Among the Representatives and Senators who have served since 1995, Bachmann’s record is more conservative than 92% of them with a DW-Nominate score of 0.577. If Bachmann ever become the Republican nominee, Democrats could make an honest case that Bachmann is far to the right of the median legislator.”
His conclusion was that Bachmann fits into the middle of the GOP field as far as degree of conservatism is concerned, which means that she would win the nomination, but she is too far outside the mainstream to win a General Election.
Without a serious primary challenger, the Obama campaign doesn’t have a lot ways to generate media coverage. Bachmann provided the Obama camp with a perfect opportunity to inject themselves into the discussion.
It is important for the President’s reelection effort that they not let the statements of the top Republican candidates go unchallenged.
With their statement, OFA sent a message to Bachmann.
Game on.

It’s about time they responded. I was concerned that they were going to let the GOP nominees battle it out, taking continuous shots at the President and not truly respond until the general election campaigning was underway. Thanks, OFA!

I think basically what she is saying is that if we do not vote Republican we will not have jobs. Let’s face it, president Obama can do everything he can do. But if the corporations are siding with the Republicans they will not hire people. This is blackmail as far as I’m concerned.
I am not sure where Michelle Bachmann is getting the fact that president Obama does not stand up for our friends and stand up to our enemies. President Obama has said that we fully support Israel ( against my best wishes) and he has certainly stood up to Al Qaeda in a massive way.
What is president Obama supposed to do about housing when she is voting against every bill to regulate the very people who cause the housing crisis? Does she even understand the word hypocrisy?
And healthcare, there is no government healthcare. The healthcare bill threw a great deal to the private companies that run healthcare. I wonder if she talk to them about this
Michelle Bachmann is a lunatic will be drowned in a puddle of her own words

Shive, You are absolutely right. President Obama does support Israel, but he also feel the Palestinians have a right to their own land. Michele thinks Arabs of any stripe are bad guys.
Apparently her obsession with Israel is because it is where the rapture will start. She hopes to be there when it happens. OMG!
ps. I am with you on the subject of Israel–

Can we all keep in mind that the current party in power in Israel is one of the more conservative factions. People frequently assume that Israeli and American Jews are of one mind regarding the current political and civil climate in Israel. Netanyahu is to Israel as PaYlin or Bachmann would be to the USA if either were accidentally elected as leader or imagine McCain and his little bombing songs.

You look at Michele’s eyes, all you can see is Old Yeller getting rabies on the tenth day of quarantine. They’re unnatural, those eyes, and I recommend anyone running an attack ad against her zero in on those rabid eyes as they narrate… and maybe a shot or two of that tetanus smile. And sublims of some poor dog dying of rabies, meanwhile – some health department or vet school surely has one (soundtrack sublim snarls).

I’m pleased the Obama campaign is responding to attacks. But the response quoted here, unfortunately, doesn’t provide any new information. It’s a few unconvincing platitudes. The campaign can do better. It must do better. I’m sure the campaign could provide details or, at least, examples that counter each of Bachmann’s statements.

@Mark: You can be as fed up as you want to be,but if, by some chance we would get a Repub president right now,the middle class are DONE in this country,at least for a VERY long time!Pres,O.will be able to do SO much more,in a final four years(and he has done more than almost any Prsident Already).People just dont see it because they cant wrap their minds around where we would be today,if not for Obama-if its bad now, without him, it would be a Thousand times worse! Dont folks get that Repubs/Teapubs do not WANT a Middle Class-and they HATE the Poor!??!!! Without Pres.O.to help and protect us,we will all be merely 3rd rate citizens with NO say about ANYTHING! Look at all the new Repub/Teaparty govenors-removing every saftey net from anyone not rich-Have those babies but we cancelled the WIC program to feed them, unemployment when there are no jobs, food stamps and school lunches when children are hungry!!I grew up in a well off Repub family and I can assure that, unless you are fairly rich, the Repubs want you to have NOTHING,PLAIN AND SIMPLE! So,get out and work for,and help Pres. Obama because he IS our ONLY hope right now!By 2016,a lot of these Fruitloops inthe Repub party will be GONE by then, and perhaps some SANITY will return, but right now we CANNOT AND MUST NOT TAKE THAT CHANCE-right now all the Repubs are Bat-Sh*t Crazy with money and POWER!!

IMO, some dems share some characteristics with conservatives, sherriww. They have their pet issues, and if those aren’t addressed in the way they think they should be when they think they should be, they take their balls and go home. They also share the conservative characteristic of seeing things as either black or white and have no propensity to realize that not everything is black or white in politics, or in life. I watched so-called “disaffected dems” hand the country over to 12 straight years of GOP governance after they pretended to be so “disgusted” with President Carter in 1980, and the results weren’t pretty. Conservatives aren’t the only Americans who could benefit from studying/reviewing American history and from a strong dose of reality. They have yet to learn that the executive branch of the Constitution does NOT install the president into the position of dictator. I’ve witnessed presidents in office since 1960 and to my knowledge not one of them was able to unilaterally create and impose legislation on the American populace.

Mark, I know you are frustrated. BUT, do not give up just yet. Obama is not perfect, he’s disappointed all of us in some way, and we all feel a bit jaded right now. That being said, remember how “the left” tried to rebuke him to teach him a “lesson” in November? The only people doing the learnin’, feeling the pain of the lesson, is us. We allowed Republicans to take control in states that had been blue for a long time. They are redistricting to lessen the possibility of dems keeping their seats in congress. They are passing voter suppression laws, they are busting unions – a major funding source for democrats. They are giving themselves unprecedented power (think emergency financial managers in Michigan), cutting education funding, cutting funding for women’s health services, cutting funding for medicare/medicaid in the states, etc. This is scary stuff, Mark. You may not like Obama, but Obama is the ONLY wall between the American we all know and love, and a totalitarian corporatist society.
If someone like Bachmann gets into the White House, you can bet that the “Emergency Managers” wouldn’t just be in states like Michigan. Think national. Would you put it past the Tea Party to install “Emergency Managers” in BLUE States, to take over the entire state and run it according to the Tea Party Manifesto?? We can’t afford to give up on Obama right now. Please stand with us and vote for another term for him.

Boy,I sure hope you are wrong about that Mark.I am also disappointed with some of President Obama’s descions, but,I have to believe that if he gets reelected, the R’s won’t be able to say NO to everything that would help this country move forward. The R’s won’t be able to say any longer that their number one priority is to not let Obama have a 3rd term.Maybe then they will finally get down to the business of actually doing what is right for this country and for ALL of us,not just the rich and big busines.

That’s exactly the kind of short-sighted thinking among Americans that the GOP is counting on to regain the White House. If their destructive policies in states like Wisconsin, Michigan, Florida, and New Jersey don’t wake you up by showing what would happen on a national scale, I don’t know what would. Anyone foolish enough enough to vote for an obvious nutcase like Bachmann out of pique deserves to suffer the consequences. In addition, the elections of 2010 should be instructive in showing the importance of voting for senators and representatives, as well as governors and mayors, who have our best interests in mind. It does no good to vote for a liberal, moderate, or progressive president, and then turn around to vote for a regressive like Palin, Bachmann, or any of the other regressives in the GOP.

You forgot Texas. Speaking of batshit crazy, have any of you done any history book reading lately or are you just believing the version of history as recited on msnbc? There are state budgets getting balanced on conservative principles around the country. You people here are the ones who will be pining for your ‘entitlements’ when you stop feeling like going to work is a good idea, and don’t even start with the ‘what jobs?’ BS. You idiots don’t have the fortitude or intelligence to do any independent research. That is a requesite of true involvement in the political process sheeple! Keep being schooled by the unbiased media, we need more know nothings in the nation to really begin making improvements. Until then, vote present on the ballot in November 2012 suckers. We can’t afford four more years of millions of Americans out of work or in jobs that pay too little to support their families.
Literally, if we took away the minimum wage—if conceivably it was gone—we could potentially virtually wipe out unemployment completely because we would be able to offer jobs at whatever level.”
Both of the above quotes are from MB. I don’t even know where to begin.
