Only Hillary Clinton inspired more conspiracy theories as First Lady than Michelle Obama, so just for kicks here are the top 5 Michelle Obama conspiracy theories.
5). Michelle Obama was disbarred/forced to give up her license to practice law in 1993
The short form of this conspiracy is that Michelle Obama either was disbarred by the Illinois Supreme Court in 1993, or that she voluntarily gave up her license to practice law before she could be disbarred for an ethics violation.
This is not true. According to snopes.com, Michelle Obama did not voluntarily surrender her law license. The First Lady requested that her law license be placed on inactive status. At the time of her request, she had no disciplinary action pending or otherwise against her.
4). As First Lady Michelle Obama Has Hired a Record Number of Assistants
This one comes from an email that was making the rounds, “Michele Obama does not get paid to serve as the First Lady and she doesn’t perform any official duties. But this hasn’t deterred her from hiring an unprecedented number of staffers to cater to her every whim and to satisfy her every request in the midst of the Great Recession.”
Bill O’Reilly debunked this one and a bunch of other Obama conspiracy theories on his Fox News show a couple of weeks ago:
Watch the latest video at video.foxnews.com
According to Bill-O, “She has about the same number Laura Bush had, approximately 20.”
3). The Government Is Taking Away Your Food Through Michelle Obama’s anti-Obesity Campaign
This is one of the new entrants on our list. The right wing media has tried to portray First Lady Obama’s campaign against childhood obesity as a vast government conspiracy to tell Americans what to eat, and at worst take away our fast food.
This one has been pushed all across right wing media, but Sarah Palin has especially taken this one to heart. While on Laura Ingraham’s radio show, Palin said, “Take her anti-obesity thing that she is on. She is on this kick, right. What she is telling us is she cannot trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families in what we should eat. And I know I’m going to be again criticized for bringing this up, but instead of a government thinking that they need to take over and make decisions for us according to some politician or politician’s wife priorities, just leave us alone, get off our back, and allow us as individuals to exercise our own God-given rights to make our own decisions and then our country gets back on the right track.”
According the Let’s Move fact sheet, the campaign is really about fighting childhood obesity through diet and exercise, “Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the problem of childhood obesity in a generation so that kids born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. This is an ambitious goal. But it can be done. Combining comprehensive strategies with common sense, Let’s Move! is about putting children on the path to a healthy future starting with their earliest months and years and continuing throughout their lives. Giving parents helpful information and fostering environments that support healthy choices. Providing healthier foods in our schools. Ensuring that every community has access to healthy, affordable food. And, helping kids become more physically active.”
2). The White House Vegetable Garden Is Fake
This is a modern favorite of Obama conspiracy theorists. The claim is that the White House vegetable garden is a fake. It has been planted with mature vegetables in order to fool the public. ( This one is the forerunner to Michelle Obama’s secret plot to take away their junk and fast food). Drudge went as far as to post “Before and After” pictures of the garden.
Susan Reimer of The Baltimore Sun visited the garden and reported that, “Indeed, the garden did look very mature on my visit there Tuesday. But not that mature. The snap peas and the greens were ready to harvest – but that’s no surprise for Washington, D.C., and a spring as rainy as ours has been. And the soil was amended with compost before it was planted. When I did that in a new bed I installed, the plants went crazy. The kale, chard and lettuces look exactly as they do at the Farmers’ Market in Annapolis that I visit each Saturday.
1). Michelle Obama’s Anti-Whitey Rant at At Trinity United Church of Christ
According to the website fight the smears,
On May 30th, Rush Limbaugh gave specific details about a video tape supposedly showing Michelle Obama using a tasteless racial slur, something an accomplished professional and loving mother like Michelle would never say. Proven sleazemeister Roger Stone went on Fox News two days later to make a similar claim.
What did Michelle actually say on that video? Nothing — there is no video. The entire thing was completely fabricated by people like Limbaugh and Stone who want to take Michelle and Barack down. In fact, neither Michelle nor Barack has ever said anything remotely like the stuff Limbaugh, Stone, and the rest made up for their fantasy tape.
All of these conspiracy theories offer some variation of an African-American stereotype. The disbarred theory hinges on the idea that Michelle Obama is a criminal. Michelle Obama needs more assistants than Laura Bush because she is lazy. The First Lady is being uppity when she dares to tell white people what to eat. The vegetable garden is a fake because she is untrustworthy. The whitey remarks conspiracy is because she hates white people.
These five theories range from odd (the White House vegetable garden is fake) to fear mongering (Michelle Obama is taking away our junk food) to race baiting (Michelle Obama hates white people), but the one characteristic that they each share is that they aren’t true.

I’ve seen the “bush’s wife had three assistants, obama’s 300″, which i didn’t believe… garbage rhetoric aside, from what i can tell this is a close family, and very decent people getting maligned for daring to be (gasp) americans and in the white house while not being WASPs.
i’ll probably pull some flames for this, but i think he’s making a real try at an almost-impossible job, and as for the wife and kids; looks like they’re trying to stay sane and “normal” as they can in that situation. kudos all around to them!

No, actually, our readers tolerate semi-respectful things about the President and his family. Sometimes they even praise him for a job well done.
I know, shocking; it’s so avant-garde:-)

I agree with you 100%, catmanhunting. President Obama inherited a disaster and I believe the reality was far, far worse than was ever revealed to him while running. I think many politicians make promises they intend to keep but when faced with the reality of the Presidency, they get pushed aside in lieu of other things that we may not even be aware of that are far more important in his job as President. I also believe they are a wonderful family, representing us proudly around the world where the President and First Lady have been warmly received despite the lies of the RWNJ’s.
If President Obama had decided not to run for re-election due to the refusal of the GOP to work with him for his entire first term, I would not have blamed him for a second. They have put their party and the power they want to achieve far ahead of the important job of helping to mend the economy. I think we’d be in far worse shape if McCain & Palin had taken office. The President needs our support and I’m very proud to call him my President. Thank you, President Obama for all you’ve done and tried to do. In your second term, I hope to see us take back the house and retain control of the Senate so we can get more done to put our country in better shape. One man can’t do it all and I’m ashamed of those fellow-liberals who have forgotten that so quickly.

Oh, the fake veggie garden! If true, can they impeach!?!?! After all, WMD were ok, but a fake veggie garden! Think of the lives lost! The Right Wing is unable to contain their radical extremism each time they open their mouths about this brilliant woman.
Personally I think they are threatened and confused because they didn’t know women had brains and were willing to use them in the company of men. They’re used to the “do as you’re commanded” stepford plastiques.

Their lies and whining bother me a lot because their attitude toward the Obamas is just bare naked hate. How, when did it become OK to be as ugly on the outside, saying such things, as they are in their thoughts?
Is this a side effect of the anonymity and immediacy of the Internet? Or is it part of the declining socialization and education of the domestic isolationists — the folks I most associate with being conservative?
Any of ‘em, all of ‘em.

buckeye… you don’t have to go back as far as Ms. Eleanor.
Just look at how they maligned our now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton when she was “merely” the First Lady for saying the people elected a team… or something like that.
Small minds will be just that. Some things never change.
Disgusting, but true, as far as I am concerned.

Ok, I might upset a lot of people posting and writing here, but I do believe that Obama’s election to the presidency was somewhat divinely inspired. He and his wife have opened a hornets nest, which I believe had to be opened. They are holding their own right now, but even should Obama lose in 2012 (which I don’t think he will unless the whole system will be changed)it will expose America to things we really do not want to see.
Did not Sarah Palin say that God always chooses the right person to be president? Well, a lot of good, so called Christians do not like God’s choice. A lot of white people (I am white) are becoming terrified that blacks, hispanics, asians and others might take over and do to them what the ‘whites’ had done to them. Personally I would hope that they (black, brown, purple) would not use the same horrible things that the whites used on them. I am brown eyed and brown haired and olive complexed, but my son is blue eyed and very blond haired from the marriage to by deceased husband of Swedish descent.

I don’t think you need to worry about “blacks, hispanics, asians and others might take over and do to them what the ‘whites’ had done to them.” We have way more important things going on in our lives to worry about cha’….so you and your son should sleep fine tonight.

I believe you misunderstood my post. By rereading it, I can understand why. I was not saying that I am afraid, neither is my son. But he hears from others who actually are afraid. The teaparty people want ‘their America’ back. What do they mean by that? They simply cannot quite adjust to the changing times.

English peas (so called in the South to distinguish them from blackeyes/zippers), as well as collards and coles, are a February or March crop, in a good year, as far north as coastal South Carolina, and I’d expect everything but slow-maturing winter squash and pumpkins and some kinds of sweet corn to be ready in most of the country. Oh, and watermelons- but the Obamas wouldn’t dare grow those, would they?

Reynardine is right about the watermelons. When Paylin’s constant badgering of the President didn’t get her the response she craved, she decided to go after his wife in the hopes that he would surely react to that. Right???? She is so accustomed to being in the company of immature, unevolved, knee-jerk ‘macho’ types that it never occurred to her that both Obamas are immune to childish taunts because they are educated, sensitive and thoughtful ADULTS. They would never lower themselves to engage in childish schoolyard antics because they have long outgrown 3rd grade, attention-seeking behavior. It frustrates her to no end and I’ve noticed when one of her taunts doesn’t appear to get their attention, she cooks up an even sillier one. Many times it appears that she does it to deflect attention from the questionable behavior within her own family circle.
I chortle and roflmfao when $P’s minions accuse liberals of being jealous of her. If I were ever inclined to be jealous or envious of anyone, I’d put Michelle Obama at the top of my list!!! Actually the better word I’d choose would be ‘admire’.

I seen the garden on a documentary. How pathetic do you have to be to make a rumor of that one?
As far as the diet goes, She doesnt say anything about not eating any foods. She talks about balanced diets and exercise. She said that if you eat a good diet you can afford to eat foods like hamburgers, ribs and other foods from time to time.
You have to expect garbage from Limbaugh and Palin. Garbage in, garbage out.

I remember when the Obamas first entered the White House. There were a lot of snide remarks on blogs about their being on the government dole, and about how both Michele Obama and her mother, Marian Robinson, represented angry black women. One female neanderthal even had the nerve to refer to the First Lady as a maid, and these remarks say nothing about the Obamas while they speak volumes about the folks posting or speaking them.

Damn straight, Kelsey, you didn’t bother to read a damn thing I said. Watermelons are a noble hot weather fruit, beloved by black and white, North and South, for the freshness they supply from August through Labor Day, and we always had a choice one (along with sweet corn) for my mother’s birthday on August 26. Nonetheless, the Obamas dare not grow them in that otherwise fine garden because of the commotion people would make- as you have done.
