United States Marine Corps. Sergeant Shamar Thomas in a spectacular moment defended the protesters of Occupy Wall Street while staring into the faces of thirty NYPD officers, and now countless other Marines have organized in an amazing show of solidarity.
Sgt. Thomas’ gallant actions in standing up for American citizens being brutalized by the police were shown in a video which has gone viral with almost 2 million views. Marines have joined forces with #OccupyMarines in solidarity with the movement not just in New York, but nationwide:
“OccupyMARINES Are Currently Assessing The Current Situation To Ascertain What Is Currently Needed To Support OWS America. We Are Humbled At The Substantial Support OWS America Has Provided And Ask That Everyone Continue As You All Do While We Implement Organization Nationwide. As We All Know, ‘Occupy’ Groups Are Being Established Even Now And Would Like To See This Trend Continue.”
Their website OccupyMarines.org presents a post centering on continuing the Occupy movement throughout the upcoming winter. In their call for “Non-Active ‘Occupy’ Military Supporters Only” they’re organizing a dress code in order to identify their branch affiliation.
Instead of ostracizing the police, the Marines are attempting to reach out to them much like Sgt. Thomas did.
#OrganizeMarines states, “Security forces/police should be seen as potential recruits to our cause and message, not as adversaries. Ultimately, they are accountable to the people.”
During Sgt. Thomas’ bold speech, the police presence became suddenly solemn hanging on his every word. Perhaps the presence of Marines will awaken the Police force which has been overwhelming the protests.
Presenting their group and the Occupiers as a peaceful movement, no matter what, including verbal attacks and/or propaganda brought forth from those opposing the protest they state, “Defensive strategies never win. Do not respond to verbal attacks or hostile propaganda from Nay-Sayers by using the language of the opponent. Reframe.”
Meet Iraq veteran Alex E. Limkin:
“I swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against enemies both foreign, and domestic.”
Veteran Alex Limkin said:
“There is nothing more central to a free and democratic people than the right to dissent, the right to disagree, the right to stand up in the town square and be heard… I feel quite sure that in standing in solidarity with the peaceful Occupy Wall Street movement, I am doing no less than upholding my oath as an American soldier.”
Sgt. Shamar Thomas was the catalyst in this movie-like scenario with our inactive military standing with the protesters side by side.
These Marines’ actions are the definition of patriotism – not donning flagpins or waving Old Betsy — actions speak Red, White and Blue louder than feigning patriotism by displays which are born from a strong partisan stance.
Naysayers stand back, the Marines are coming.
#OccupyMarines, we are humbled.

No flag pins? Michelle Bachmann isn’t going to like this.
The sad thing I see is that the police are accountable to the wealth. Otherwise they would not be acting like they are all over the US. Seen a vid today where the cops went berserk on a completely peaceful crowd in Australia. The police do not answer to the people any more
Best of luck Armed Forces!

If you will note toward the end, a squad of riot cops arrived and the white shirts waved them off, because they KNEW if they abused this Marine like they have been regularly abusing the hippies and wannabe hippies that the war was over and they had lost. Shortly thereafter ALL the cops disappeared.
They know they are in the wrong.

Gee Tom, I’m not sure where you’ve been to call everyone involved in this movement “hippies and wannabe hippies”. There are people from all walks of life who are protesting. Most of us consider ourselves educated folk and don’t have time for labels and name calling.
Maybe you should actually stroll down to your local OWS movement and get to know your fellow Americans a bit better.

As always, you come across as being tone-deaf as to what’s really going on. He was not disrespectful in any way to those police officers, but very strongly reminding them that police brutality goes against what he, his parents, his grandfather, and great-grandfather have fought for in the military. One thing they fought for is the right of peaceful assembly, which is what the protesters have been exercising. The examples of police brutality have been completely unwarranted and, as Sgt. Thomas made clear, don’t show toughness but cowardice. And I say these things as someone who works on a police department. Obviously, I’m not against police but against police brutality. That brutality creates distrust among citizens, and has even led to the killings of officers made to pay for the irresponsible actions of some of their fellow officers.

What’s happened to “American values”? The police now act like cowardly brutes against fellow American citizens to silence their free speech, one of our most cherished Constitutional rights, because they, the police, no longer protect the innocent against criminals, these NYPD (and others across the country, like them) have become the criminals. All because they value the approval of the criminal bosses (whether they are “supervisors of NYPD,” or the moneyed crowd calling the shots at city hall and beyond, over the rights of ordinary citizens in a free society, where the innocent should not have to fear the actions of the police.

This is a Marine who is completely dismayed by an arm of our local governments to the point of utter disgust. It appears that the video is spliced together, which only shows him yelling non-stop. Most of the cops, those that aren’t arrogant, are obviously humbled and somewhat shamed at the dressing down they received by someone who they consider a peer. They seem more upset by the depth of his anger, than they seemed bemused by a “loony”
What he said was absolutely true, and they knew it.

Here’s an idea: Let’s hope those standup Marines and the returning soldiers coming home from Iraq see what’s going on with the Occupiers, and the difference between them and the Koch-supported Teapartiers — and this motivates some of them to run for state or U.S. representation of those people. There will never be any meaningful change within the USA, especially economic change with the ever-upward stream of the national wealth into but a few hands and to corporate USA, unless a military coup led by honorable loyal-to-the-USA and ALL the citizens within officer corps and a large cadre of their troops, sailors, etc. forces the various entrenched systems, bureaucracies and multitude of governments from local to federal to change.
Voting does not and will not create meaningful change.
Many reasons for that requiring too much conveying of why that is so.
Of this I am convinced.
It took decades of reading, living life, etc. AND casting aside some of the implanted indoctrination by the most effective propaganda systems ever created that is designed to enforce the status quo so profitable to the small minority of people and institutions (corporate USA etc.) for me to come to the realization that ONLY a military coup can alter the USA.
Civilian insurrection or revolution is extremely unlikely to have any effect in either alter the existing systems or creating an effective new one.
I truly fear the USA is doomed to fall/fail.

We reap what we sow. Change can always happen, even for better. This has been a long time coming and unfortunately people don’t get off their collective butts until trouble comes home to roost.
We MUST begin with out election process, take out the MONEY. Get the rich man who backs the other rich man and toss them out of the game. Get rid of the Electoral College so that every citizen’s vote actually counts. Also, how many voters from the later time zones don’t even bother to vote because they’ve watched the news on election night and have heard some analyst state that it’s game over because a candidate has enough votes to win already?? Lunacy! Politicians in the United Kingdom get equal air time via media and don’t raise money to campaign.
Lobbyists have to go! They pay for business and that is downright ugly.
What will come of this Occupy movement is a new political party and I would be thrilled if it was called “The 99% Party”, that way we wouldn’t forget who really matters in this world, the true majority.
Keep your chin up OBBOP, hope is on the horizon. If you want real change, WALK WITH THE 99%; GET UP STAND UP!

THEY KNOW IT and are aligned for a global correction and solution. Will we pay for our apathy and ignorance? ABSOLUTELY! Were we the greatest society in the history of mankind? OF COURSE! Will we be again? Possibly, but that is not the point…we need to learn from our mistakes and try,try again. Any fool can cast shadows during a war, true men keep cleaning their weapons…the upper crust may well be eaten. Your either part of the solution or part of the problem, draw a line and decide.

These Marines have fought in horrible conditions and have seen things that will surely haunt them for the rest of their lives. Since they’ve fought and in some cases died fighting to preserve American rights, I find their presence welcome. They have a credibility stemming from their experiences, and Sgt. Thomas exemplifies this. It’s proof that more and more Americans are realizing that OWS is speaking out for the interests of the 99% and it’s even sweeter that it’s occurring despite the worst efforts of demonizers from the media, from the fake Christians of the far right, or from Republican politicians.

Well, this gives me a little bit of hope.
With all of the things I’ve seen and read about (example – some of the stuff the MRFF gets into), I wasn’t sure if any branch of the military would live up to their oaths (the one to the constitution, not the one to the dominionists) and reading about this is reassuring. I’m also glad to encounter marines that care about things like freedom of the American people, and not just “Rah Rah War!!!” and “Obey the rules no matter how wrong or unjust they are!” like the few ex-marines I’ve encountered.
Now, if the cops would get on board (I would actually expect that from other areas… in this area I expect only more of the same), maybe the danger in this country to freedom would decrease.
I could whole-heartedly get behind the #OccupyMARINES movement and people.

He is not the first Marine to speak out about the injustice of our corporate run democracy. Look up US marine major general “Smedley Butler” and what he has said…”War is a racket”
He also exposed the coup d’etat that was planned against Roosevelt by the rich corporatist and bankers of the day…including JP Morgan. All because they were against the “New Deal” that helped with America’s recovery from the depression that they had caused. The “New Deal” used government funds to rebuild the infrastructure (amongst other programs) and put many Americans back to work.
Eisenhower also used government funds to create out Interstate system back in the 50’s, and created many, many jobs. So when one of these corporate cronies that call themselves politicians says, “Government can’t create jobs”…tell them where to stick it!
Glad to see this honorable soldier stand up for the protesters and our democracy, and I hope many more veterans with the courage of Smedley Butler stand up as well. Once the cops start to push them around…It’s ON!

Does it ask too much to expect US pastors, rabbis, Imams and other faith leaders to join their voices for justice? Is it too much for the clergy to speak to the conscience of police workers, to ask why the occupiers have less right than they to walk our streets, or on what legal authority provisions of the Riot Act (demanding clearance of streets) is enacted? Is it asking too much for professors of Divinity to question police supervisors what they will tell their grandchildren as she sits on their laps and asks what is happening?
There are times in which clergy have spoken with magisterial authority approaching that of a President. Where are the Dietrich Bonhoeffers of our time? Where are the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Juniors? Where are the John Howard Yoders? Where are those who can teach us to answer Fuhrers, dogs and tyrants with a simple, ‘no?’ Clergy often bemoan the lack of public commitment to their faith communities. Might there be a reason for this?

I see a coup brewing. It remains to be seen who is going to fund it. Unless military officers are ready to steal armaments and hijack congress and the presidency, and the FED. If that happens FOR the people, great. If it is for a wealthy few, then it’s another third world puppet dictatorship by the banks. Who is really running Egypt now? The Egyptians did not have the foresight to dismantle their political structure altogether; instead they put in new psople who will be blackmailed and whose lives and their family’s lives threatened by the banks’ economic hitmen. The banks love these kinds of movements becuase they can come in after everything is in disarray and sell the idea of their ‘nation-buildind/rebuilding’ using their loans. Until the country becomes dependent on them, like on a drug. As long as people accept the pricing system and the value of money, they will be slaves of those who have it. There is no price on life, on living decently, on the world’s resources. The price one must pay for getting food from the earth is replanting that food and replenishing the land’s minerals; the price one pays for using elctronics is to devise ways to have less e-waste and mining of precious metals. THIS is the new price system we need — one that puts life values in the mix, not a measurement of value via a piece of paper that can be printed irreponsbily, and that is determined by the ‘invidible hand’ of a market system, where a t-shirt that costs $10 to make is priced $1000 because someone put a designer’s name on it. THAT is what this market system is. It is ridiculous.
The market/money system does not suppor human and natural need. It supports the whims and fantasies of the wealthy that have cornered it. I am not against lusury and beauty, but everyone can and should be able to have that without the price system and without sacrificing the earth’s resources.

They were smart enough to know that the four million that J.P.Morgan paid them off with would not stop a blood bath had they touched this marine. Lets hope that the marines and all the other services who come in can make them realize the truth of what Sgt Thomas was saying, they too are Americans and have a responsibility only to the people who built America, not the corporations and the Banks who are trying to destroy our country.

Democracy in America is something to be preached but not practiced.
Be careful, the next war you call may have a low turnout.

Dear friends, here is a video of what happended today, the brutal repression to those who were
peacefully manifesting against feminicide (the unsolved murder of hundreds of women since 1994)
in Juarez, Mexico… it is a shame that local police is completely incompetent in solving a single
case of feminicide or violence related to the war on drugs, but it is very effective in arresting
30 people using half of the police force of the city!!
