The Gateway Pundit is the go to site for the extreme ideological right wing. It also has the journalistic integrity of North Korea. In the latest post by this vile website, Jim Hoft, Gateway’s owner wrote and posted this article titled “Good Grief… Leftie Hero Scott Olsen Is Founder of “I Hate the Marines Corps.com” & Is a Jew-Basher”.
Now, knowing the right wing’s history of fabrication and lies I dug into the history of the website they reference, IHATETHEMARINECORPS.COM. It turns out that it is registered to Scott Olsen, BUT it is registered to Scott Olsen from Milan, Illinois.

The Scott Olsen the Gateway Pundit is referencing is Scott Olsen from Onalaska, Wisconsin who was critically injured at Occupy Oakland. Scott moved to California after finding a job in the information technology field in San Francisco, with the help of his roommate Keith Shannon. The distance from Onalaska WI to Milan Ill. is over 200 miles away.
The website they reference was created on January 28th 2009. Scott was deployed to Iraq twice. The first time, August 2006 to May 2007 and then from 2008-2009, he left the Marines in November of 2009.
This is how vile and disgusting the right wing is. They will try and discredit a soldier, an Iraq veteran, just because it fits their narrow narrative to discredit an entire movement.
How many Scott Olsens are in the United States? We don’t even know if the Scott Olsen that created the website was even in the Marines, but we do know, by looking into the history of the website, that the Scott Olsen the website is registered to is from Illinois, not Wisconsin.
This doesn’t mean that it can’t be the same Scott Olsen, but the point is, what does it matter? This is America. Scott Olsen is still a hero who served his country in Iraq, and a hero does not deserve to be smeared in a desperate attempt to discredit a movement.
The attack on Scott Olsen is based on the right’s delusion that all soldiers are happy warriors, and nobody who serves ever leaves the military is disenchanted. It doesn’t matter whether Scott Olsen fits the right wing image of the superhero soldier. This man didn’t deserve to have his skull fractured by the police.
Don’t be distracted by the right’s games. Scott Olsen is still a hero for his service to his country and for standing with the protesters at Occupy Oakland. What I think is the most disgusting thing is, this right wing attack on a TWO TIME Iraq war veteran whose unit was attacked with IEDs.
It turns out that the right wing only stands and supports the troops if the troops fall inline with their narrow minded beliefs.
I support the troops regardless of their political ideology. I may disagree, like I disagree with U.S Senator Scott Brown and John McCain. I still respect their service and acknowledge them for their sacrifice.
The right love to wrap themselves in the flag and wear their lapel pins, but when someone like Jim Hoft, personally attacks a service member, it proves to me he has no respect for the men who protect his right to slander a war hero.
Scott Olsen didn’t fall in line with the “love” of the Corp but there is NO DOUBT he loves his country and his fellow Marines or he wouldn’t be standing in Oakland protesting and wouldn’t have sacrificed himself in Iraq!

Here is a picture of Talk Radio host Ken Pittman from WBSM calling the Marine Sgt from OWS, a Moron because he is defending OWS. I guess it just isn’t Scott Olsen they attack…it is ANY soldier who doesn’t hold their political views!

The Gateway Pundit also previously claimed that a protester the cops drove over in a police motorcycle was faking it, but you could clearly see that the cop left the bike on top of his leg and just walked away after driving over it. Denial is strong on that site and Republicans are easy to deceive — just tell them someone is a Democrat and they’ll believe he’s wrong. It’s always ‘their team’ that’s right. Remember, we are protesting while ‘our guy’ is in office. When ‘their guy’ was in office they had no qualms over his spendthrift ways but one day into Obama’s leadership and they start Tea Party protests holding “Stop spending” signs.

SOME people of the so-called civilised world may be laughing at us. But not “the civilised world” which implies a whole.
Furthermore, if you follow ANY foreign politics, you would say that a VERY large number of citizens of foreign (civilised) countries support us enough to join us in solidarity, further negating the sweeping assertion that “the civilised world” is laughing at us.
“Troll” isn’t an unreasonable assumption here. This person is “misguided and ignorant” at best (along with “rude”).

Jim Hoft does not represent the right wing as a whole…he represents a fanatical neo-con far right extremist portion of the right. Not all conservatives support this thinking. I am a moderate progressive conservative who supports the OWS movement and is disgusted by the smear campaign initiated by this yahoo against Scott Olsen. Both parties have extremists and extreme views on either side leads to extreme hate. I do not believe in that and I do not believe in supporting the actions that both right and left extremists groups do in order to pit human being against another. I have many conservative friends who feel the same way who are disgusted by how the extreme right has torn our party to shreds. But if we do not speak up for ourselves all that will be left are the people that we don’t want representing us. My friend say to change my political affiliation…why so the extreme right wins and those neo-con nut jobs are the only thing left. The popular media gives them all the attention so that people think they are the only conservatives left out there and that is BS…there are many like me and we do not believe in this smear campaign. Scott Olsen did not deserve to be brutalized for standing up for what he believes in!!!

Its so sad how people hate an entire political party that isnt even properly represented, because of what the mainstream presents as the official representation of that party. Good luck trying to unify our society and “come together” with each other, when here it is you take a horrible attempt to smear a good person and make a broad sweeping generalization about Republicans based on its contents and creator. When will people learn to quit playing into this crap? Youre right to demonize that GUY for his article, but you just make things worse when you use terms like “the right” or “republicans” when describing the source of this ignorance. Its pathetic. I want to start with I am not a Republican, I am not a Democrat, I am not an Independent, I am simply an American (I know someone’s going to try and be smart and say “If you aren’t one of the two you’re Independent.” No, I don’t agree with partisanship in any way, shape, or from, so I refuse to call myself a part of any specific group. But one thing that I cannot figure out, is what the Occupy movement as a whole is really trying to accomplish. I know the basics of the problems that everyone has, but what exactly do they want done to fix those problems? I mean, I am not trying to bash here. I am genuinely curious as to what the GOAL of the movement is, not the problems that incite it.
On a different note, Scott Olsen probably has a libel claim against that writer, IF it is found that he is in fact not that same Scott. One thing I don’t agree with this article is, while it points out that Scott could be the same Scott who owns that website, it downplays that point to keep the main issue in the article strong. And let’s be honest, the article is just a way to both help build credibility for Scott, but also to take a bash at an article that does not support the Occupy movement. And I am speaking at the most basic level here, by the way. I am not trying to say there is not more to the article.
Now, while there was a comment “You mean there is more than one Scott Olsen in the world?” Think about the comment that could be said to you, “You mean people cannot move?” Is it not possible that, while Scott was deployed, he lived in Illinois? And while they are deployed, they have no access to internet of any kind? “He is in Iraq, so he cannot use a computer with internet.” One of the most advanced, technologically, militaries in the world isn’t able to get internet to it’s soldiers in some way? When the American consumer is able to do so with satellites? Doesn’t make sense. I would like to clarify, I have never been in the military, so I honestly don’t know if there are rules against being on the internet?
I am not trying to say that this Scott is the same Scott that started that site, I am just saying there is a possibility. There is always a possibility, but back to his case he might have against the writer of the article (Not this one). It’s up to the writer to do reasonable research in finding out the facts for his story. He might have done so and found that this Scott was living where the site said he was living when that site was created. (I know someone said the site doesn’t exist. That just helps out Scott’s case) On the other hand if he just stopped at the info on the site, then he wouldn’t have done his due diligence, obviously.
I would like to reiterate my honest question. What is the main goal of the Occupy movement. All the people I have asked claim that the financial system is way out of balance, our country is on a downward spiral financially, and we need to get out. I get that, what is it you want done to change this? What is the achievement at which the movement stagnates, and goes “Ok, we got what we want.”?

If the alluded to site (doubtless) belongs to another Scott Olsen, I hope the offending party(s) have plenty to loose in court and Scott takes it all.
Many of us are impatient about specific goals, but the simple act of organizing against the 1% disparities with a large enough number to sway elections, while self-evidently very doable, is a tall order.
The word, “regulators”, shouted in 1979, was in itself very effective.
Most Americans know what 99% and the protests are all about. For now, I think that is enough because it is new and must evolve well rather than hastily.
loading...
Robert
Oct. 29th, 2011 at 12:39 am
But I am wondering what is it that the movement is for? The only thing that really would make a difference is voting power at this point. So if you changed the roster of politicians what do you want them to accomplish? You know what I mean? When you say evolve, yes as far as the people involved. But there must be some basic message that is trying to be sent? “We are the 99%” Doesn’t really tell anything. If I started a campaign “I can’t drive 55″, I would be able to tell people that what would make me feel better would be if they made the speed limits higher, you know? What is it that the Occupy movement really wants in the end? That is why alot of people I know are not getting involved, because noone can answer that question. What is it that the movement wants changed and how do they plan on doing it?
loading...
Robert
Oct. 29th, 2011 at 12:40 am
And when I say, “How do they plan on doing it,” I mean what sort of plan would be put forth to better that. I understand that growing the following is one of the plans, but I mean as far as implementing the goals.

Josh
Oct. 29th, 2011 at 2:35 am
There are a lot of different things that people want accomplished, and a lot of different ways to accomplish them. For example, I believe the key component is removing money from politics. There are a variety of ways to work toward this goal, including working to implement clean or publicly funded elections, to elect candidates that will work toward campaign finance reform, to pressure or encourage established candidates to refuse corporate donations and use that principle as political capital among the 99% of people that cannot buy them off. I could go on and on. At the same time, I am concerned with illegal warfare, financial deregulation, and environmental despoilation. And there are ways to effect change in those realms as well, not least of all through mere education.
The real question is what would you like to change? And how would you do it? The movement isn’t about a group of protestors making demands. It’s about people like you and me reinserting ourselves into our democracy and taking practical action to help it work better for the 99% of us that have been left behind. If you haven’t been left behind yet, trust me, they are coming for you next.
Power to the people! Peace.

As for online accounts, no, I’m not going to take a flickr account’s word for it. Sorry. But more to the point, exactly what is your point? That he ALLEGEDLY didn’t like the Marines so he’s not a hero?
He still fought for this county either way and I have news for you, plenty of our warriors feel the same way. That only makes them bigger heroes in my eyes- they still fought for their country even though they didn’t like the war. And by the way, on behalf of the countless returning troops I’ve talked to, who’ve seen hideous things on their tours of duty and are entitled to their opinions about the wars, HOW DARE YOU try to smear the reputation of someone who fought for this country and infer that he deserved to have his head cracked open while peacefully assembling? Also, if this is the extent of your internet detective skills, and you are satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt by a picture on a youtube account, I pity you. The internet is a pretty big place and there are lots of people out there, and some of them are less than honest. But back to your motives, why are you trying so hard to smear him? Do you think that makes what happened to him OK? Because if you do, that makes you a monster, given that he wasn’t doing anything to provoke an attack.
What exactly does it prove if that WAS him? What in the hell is your point, other than to smear a badly injured warrior because you don’t support the cause he believe in?

In a nutshell? A formal address of grievances. There were numerous Americans that died during the civil rights movement, and it will probably take protesters sacrificing their lives for the poor(and getting poorer) in this country, and countries abroad. Personally, it is no consequence to me who/what Scott Olsen, who was injured in Oakland is/said/done. It’s the principle in which he was avoidably injured. Now the coverup has ensued, and so has the smear campaign/sock puppet attacks.

Oh, but remember the time Gateway Pundit saw OMG TYRANNY!!! at an Obama speech?
http://www.osborneink.com/2010/04/tyranny-of-the-imagination.html
See, when the local police deploy a riot squad, ask the tea party to cross the street, and then withdraw the riot squad on compliance without even touching anyone, it’s HITLER!!! But when the police shoot a Marine in the head that’s COMPLETELY DIFFERENT because left wingers are not REAL AMERICANS. See how that works?

How many Vietnam vets coming home despising whatever branch of the military the were in and promptly began engaging in peace marches? There was much about this war servicemen have become disillusioned about. So, if the Scott Olson in question is against the marines or not, he served his time, he served it honorably. If you do a further background check on him, you will find that he did come home injured.
Did you go to war Mr Bob? Did you see what he saw, felt what he felt? Do you know or even care about why he may feel anger towards the military?
No. You weren’t there. So I don’t think it is fair to label him “bad” because he allegedly hates the marines. He would not have joined a group, read that A GROUP of Marines who find this cause worthy enough to join. He is not alone, have you heard of Occupy Marines, Occupy Navy, Occupy Army… there is even an Occupy Police! This movement, as much as the propaganda machine tries to slander it, has good decent, caring, patriots within it, from 12 – 90, they are there, if not in body, in spirit. We do what we do because WE CARE about ALL Americans, no matter what party, or no party, they come from, nor race, color, creed, gender, sexual orientation. If you are a human being, you are accepted and welcomed.
The more slander, the better we are doing what we are meant to do. The bigots, the hypocrites, and the downright scared, would join us if they could just get past their dogma.
O W S and all other locations around the world, have made their messaged clear. Why should we make demands? We are there to make people think about the major issues facing us as a country, hell as a WORLD. We did not create the problems, our government and their Corporate bedfellows did. It is not up to us to ‘fix’ the issues, it is up to the people we elected to figure out how to fix the mess they made.
But like recalcitrant children, they put their fingers in their ears and say, “nah, nah, nah, I can’t hear you! I don’t want to clean my room, I don’t care if I made the mess, I am not cleaning it up!” Then they turn their heads and starting projecting their crap onto others. Right against Left, Left against Left (remember the GOP debate debacle?) The Libertarians against anyone who will fight them because they haven’t been this listened to…. ever!
We are tired of dealing with children, be that child a president or a pundit, or people who don’t think for themselves, but re-gurgitate everything they hear…
All we want is for everyone to wake up, take responsibility, and fix our democracy, so we can focus on the next crisis; the environment, all before it is just too damn late.

There are people who believe that all the military came home and loved what they did “over there”. The military is on a pedestal and can do no wrong. Some pretty fooked up people came home and the people who put them on a pedestal ignored them. Just like they are doing with the Iraq soldiers. Ignore them they don’t exist. All wrong

My friend Gary is a career sergeant in the Marines. He served two Tours of Duty in Iraq, the second being extended twice. He has a wife and three children. He loves the Marines, he loves his men, and I understand he’s an excellent leader. He’s never said anything bad about his service. All I have to go on is his requests for “comfort” items for his men in Iraq: toothpaste, soap, socks & underwear …. how are these ‘luxuries’ and not necessities for the maintenance of human health? And why was Bush not providing those? And can you imagine life without those things while you tote a 60lb pack and your weapons in 110 degree heat? The misery is between the lines.

“This is how vile and disgusting the right wing is. They will try and discredit a soldier, an Iraq veteran, just because it fits their narrow narrative to discredit an entire movement.”
While I agree with the purpose of calling out the sources of misinformation here, I think it is a little shallow to marginalize every bit of the “right”(or even use the marginalization inherent in the word in the first place) in dividing people against each other. There are many from “the right” if you want to call it that in this movement, including in Occupy Oakland. “The right” doesn’t like bank bailouts or financial lobbyists either. We’re all in this together.

Then it’s up to the folks on the right who disagree with these tactics to stand up and be counted. We ARE all in this together, but when folks on the right who support this fail to speak up, then they can’t be surprised to learn that we think they are all on the same page.

Even if the injured Scott had registered that domain, feelings are transient, or haven’t you ever been so frustrated that you just had to “register” a complaint? Ever tried to think up a new pass word when you were pissed off? One would think the former is private and the latter is public so my comparison is apples and oranges, but things happen. I recently divulged my ranty email pass word to my housesitting sibling, it was pretty colorful.
What was done to Scott was nothing less than attempted murder regardless of his personal life. Put someone you know in his place and think about it.

I hope they fire all those police so they realize what OWS stands for, and I hope Oakland gets sued for billions.
The police are thugs hired by the rich to enforce the whims of the rich, protect the rich, and put the middle/poor classes in body bags.
The rich are allowed to break the law without consequence far more often than not, and directly profit from the private jail slave labor camps that are bankrupting local government with their 500% markups.
Use the keywords “police brutality” in Google search, or on YouTube to see what I mean. Do you really think that they treat the rich and the non-rich the same?
Open your eyes.

As for the Republicans trying to invalidate what happened to this man, why are you surprised?
The Republicans think anyone who isn’t rich is scum.
The Republicans think that anyone who isn’t rich is a parasite to be rubbed out at the earliest possible convenience for the rich.
I don’t know of any poor people on Wall Street.
Do you?
OWS is inconvenient for the Republicans’ rich masters. So the Republicans will do/say anything to try to discredit OWS, and justify the ongoing police brutality being used on American citizens who are exercising their Constitutional right to protest.
The Republicans’ destructive social policies ENSURE there will be UNESCESSARRY SUFFERING AND DEATH.
The Republicans dehumanize their victims like rapists, and use evil social policy to callously murder the non-rich.
The Republicans know this, and actively CHOOSE to cause UNESCESSARRY SUFFERING AND DEATH.
A vote for the Republican party might as well be rape and murder by proxy.
The Democrats on the other hand have made good on some of their promises despite Republican barriers, and continue to advocate for the middle/poor classes against the Republicans’ wishes.
VOTE DEMOCRAT!

Barack Obama got more money from Wall Street than any politician in history, and has delivered more of our money to them than any politician in history. His administration and advisors represent a who’s who of the 1%. Congressional democrats like Kerry, Schumer and Dodd are totally owned by Wall Street.
But hey, let’s blame it on the republicans. Let’s ignore that Wall Street loves the DNC. Let’s ignore that Obama is Goldman Sachs’ candidate. Inconvenient truths need to be destroyed so we can continue the narrative: Dem good, Rep bad.
The only difference between D and R is that R doesn’t hide their contempt of the people and love for Wall Street. D just keeps up the pretence whilst selling us out at every step.

Isnt that strange when its the GOP that is trying so hard to protect wall street?
I wonder if you are referring to the bailouts call TARP that gave a vast sum of money to Wall Street?
TARP = Bush
If it looked like McCain was going to win, he would have gotten the most money from wall street. they flow where the winner flows.

We see these claims made all the time about Obama and they are inevitably false, such as Palin’s claims that “Obama received the most BP PAC money” – in fact he received “no PAC money from BP during his presidential campaign, and only $1,000 during his 2004 Senate campaign” as MediaMatters points out, and Republicans have said Obama is “the single largest recipient of BP’s cash” to back up Sarah Palin’s “baseless suggestion that contributions from oil companies have affected Obama’s response to the Gulf oil spill. In fact, the money comes almost entirely from individuals employed by BP, not the corporation itself, and represents a minuscule fraction of Obama’s total campaign contributions.” As for Wall Street, as PolitiFact.com says, “In the general election, Obama got about 34 percent of his individual donations from small donors, people who gave $200 or less, according to a report from the Campaign Finance Institute. Another 23 percent of donations came from people who gave between $201 and $999, and another 42 percent from people who gave $1,000 or more.
His numbers for the primary were similar. He got about 30 percent of his money from donors who gave $200 or less. Another 28 percent of donations came from people who gave between $201 and $999, and 43 percent from people who gave $1,000 or more.”
Yes, he also got money from large donors, more than he wanted to admit, but I’ve yet to see any evidence that he is the biggest recipient of Wall Street money in history.

Well said. And the question is (also true, he was NOT the biggest recipient and they tend to give money to whomever they think will win in hopes of buying influence) is whether the money donated bought them what they wanted. In Obama’s case, it did not. I love how the right always forgets that little part:-)

Dodd of The Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act? “To promote the financial stability of the United States by improving accountability and transparency in the financial system, to end “too big to fail”, to protect the American taxpayer by ending bailouts, to protect consumers from abusive financial services practices, and for other purposes.”
LOL. Okay then.

Whether it is Limbaugh or Coulter or Hannity or O’Riley or Carl Rove or the Koch brothers or Jim Hoft the aim is the same the technique is the same the end result is the same and that is Hate. Most of the above have made millions off of peddling hate and therefore good American entrepreneurs in their world view. We recently had in Asheville the chair of the Rethuglican Party along with an accomplice engage in vigilantism becuase he and his lackey decided that our Occupy Asheville folkes were “socialist” and needed to be harassed at 5 in the morning as they peacefully slept. It is ironic and sad that the Tea Party Robber Barons can come armed to the teeth even where the President is speaking and no one from the fox news? cares but a group of unarmed peaceable people including veterans can be attacked with impunity and they condemn the people rather than the so called peace officers! As a person of faith I can tell you that no one who claims the mantle of faith can or would condone such violence. As a bishop in the Christian church I can tell you also that you cannot be a follower of Jesus Christ and be a member of the Tea Party Republicans. Their ideology is evil their agenda is evil and their party unpatriotic and treasonous! Jesus was NOT an American capitalist thank God! He was and is a Socialist!

God embraced fair, charitable and honest capitalism my friend. The scales in the market place had better be honest*.. Read the Bible instead of guessing. Christ warned the prosperous not to leave behind the poor to escape damnation but he left them the choice. Freewill. Christ also said “the poor you will always have with you…”
Christ was also pro-life. Mary chose life too, even though being an unwed mother exposed her to being stoned to death according to the Hebrew law. Sorry to be the buzz killer

Oddly, you offer no links for your “evidence” and again, miss the point — somehow you think that an avatar is a positive ID for someone – let’s hope no one takes your photo and begins leaving awful comments on the internet and then police shoot you in the head, cracking your skull while morons on the internet say you deserved it because of what your “avatar” wrote.
That said, I hope Gateway Pundit is sure about those Jewish bashing comments being his, since they offered no proof other than an avatar. And you call Ray’s work shoddy? LOL.
By the way, I do hope you come back when the full truth is exposed on this one. And please explain to us again how anyone who serves their country bravely in two tours of duty deserves scorn from you because you don’t agree with their politics? How exactly is that American thinking? Oh, I forgot, you only think those who agree with you are Americans. Good thing you don’t realize where the troops donated the majority of their money in 2008.
