There are distinct advantages to allowing the public to cast ballots on a variety of issues that impact society and the well-being of individuals in that society. Conversely, there are issues that affect personal choice and rights of individuals that do not fall into the purview of the public regardless of public opinion on ethical or morality issues. Americans are facing an alarming ascendance of fundamentalist Christians who are using the ballot box to impose their religious beliefs on the entire population without regard for contrary opinions, personal choice, or the Constitution’s guarantee of the pursuit of happiness, and the goal is a theocratic government controlled by evangelical Christians and the Catholic Church.
Dominionists have as their goal the total control of seven areas of society that, if achieved, will transform America into a country that will eclipse Taliban-controlled Afghanistan in its severity and Draconian imposition of religious edicts as defined by fundamentalist Christians. In particular, the current campaign to define the term person as a fertilized human egg is a Dominionist ploy to control families through their rising influence in politics. Next week in Mississippi, voters will make the call on when a person comes into being without regard to biological facts.
The Mississippi personhood amendment (Initiative 26) gives voters the lofty responsibility of assigning human rights and personhood to a zygote based on nothing more than evangelicals’ bible-based beliefs and ignorance of biological science and reason. Besides the inordinately twisted view that a fertilized egg is a person worthy of human rights, the personhood amendments strip all human rights from women to control their own bodies. There have been chapter and verse written about the evil personhood movement’s sponsors and their goal of overturning Roe v Wade in the courts, but their tactics are indicative of religion suppressing women’s rights as a precursor to Dominionist control of America.
The GOP is complicit in the Dominionist’s imposition of biblical beliefs and their abhorrence of contraception. Last July, New Hampshire Republicans refused to renew a contract for Planned Parenthood that authorized them to dispense birth control pills. Planned Parenthood’s retail pharmacy license was contingent on a state contract, and by rejecting a new contract, the family planning service lost out on $1.8 million in government money and the ability to dispense contraception; it also jeopardizes testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases. One Republican who voted to oppose awarding the contract said it should not go to Planned Parenthood because they perform abortions that are paid for through private donations; regular audits ensure that no public or government funds pay for abortion services.
The effect of restricting access to affordable birth control is that many low-income women have no choice but to stop using contraception altogether out of economic necessity. Planned Parenthood also conducts screenings for cervical and breast cancer and those are in jeopardy because the Republicans failed to award a contract. There is a lesser known Dominionist movement behind the anti-contraception drive that mandates women to propagate like rabbits called the quiver-full movement. Their goal is to produce as many Christians as possible to gain a majority of ultra-conservative evangelical voters who will elect hard-line theocrats to take over all branches of American government to install a voter-approved theocracy.
Although all Americans are in peril of losing their freedoms in the long haul, the immediate concern should be the Republicans’ co-opting the Dominionists’ war on women and their right to choose their own reproductive health. Obviously the war on women’s rights has as its goal overturning Roe v Wade, but in the meantime, low-income women face health risks and numerous unwanted pregnancies if Republicans and their Dominionist masters are not stopped. It is unfortunate, but it seems Americans do not have the stomach to oppose and crush the unconstitutional imposition of Christian-inspired legislation that is being approved at an alarming rate in states and the federal government. Besides the Republicans, there are cowardly Democrats who acquiesce to Dominionists’ invectives because their constituencies are hard-line evangelicals and they fear losing the next election; voting for unconstitutional legislation is the price they pay for re-election, but they pay it willingly.
The right to vote in America is a privilege, but there are cases when the public has no right voting to impose bible-based edicts masquerading as law. There are no voters in Mississippi who have the credentials to decide that a fertilized egg is a person worthy of human rights, but next Tuesday, the most religious state in the Union will make that decision based not on biological science and reason, but on some obscure scripture that says god creates life in the womb. The truth is that a man fertilizes a woman’s egg in the womb and most of the time the egg fails to implant resulting in no pregnancy. There is no god involved and if there were; what kind of god would create a person from instances of violent rape or incest? That kind of evil god represents the vile evangelical Christians who purport to carry out his will.
There are ethical questions involved in when life begins, but allowing maniacal evangelical Christians to answer them is the height of stupidity. It is unethical to allow politicians to decide that Planned Parenthood cannot dispense birth control because Christians believe that every instance of intercourse necessarily results in pregnancy. America is sliding into the Dark Ages because fundamentalists are allowed to control Republicans who are all too happy to impose the bible on all Americans; especially on women.
Voters in Mississippi must not be allowed to impose their ignorant bible-inspired beliefs on an entire state because it sets a dangerous precedent like the one in New Hampshire where Republicans eliminated the only source of affordable contraception for low-income women. The problem will only spread to the federal government where Republicans are in a frenzy to remove contraceptive coverage in the Affordable Health Act.
Christians object to women having sex without producing children because they need recruits for their onward Christian-soldier army and cannot wait for their numbers to grow so America can become a theocracy. Voting to define life is wrong in any case, but especially when it is driven by Dominionists whose stated goal is to control every aspect of Americans’ lives. Today they are attempting to control women, and if they are not stopped, all Americans will understand what living in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan entailed. However, compared to Dominionists, the Taliban will look tame and not nearly as evil as Christianity’s version of Mullahs, Ayatollahs, and bible-thumping death squads who were installed by the Republican Party.

Everyone knows that the purpose of babies is to punish women for having tw*ts, and the purpose of the constant threat of pregnancy is to ensure that they never enjoy sex, even in wedlock. Meanwhile, all you fundies who happen to have roosters in your flock: was that scrambled person you ate tasy?

Women need to rise up & say no protection, no choice, no sex – of any kind. Unfortunately that won’t work with the fundies because their women are brainwashed to be submissive to their “masters.” I’m willing to bet though if push came to shove, many still would do that.
Viagra & all other male enhancement aids need to be outlawed, no insurance for them for any erectile or sexual dysfunction. Males having children by more than one woman would be sterilized, rapists & pedophiles castrated on their first offense, etc. Of course none of the above will ever be enacted, but wouldn’t it be funny if every time a Republican introduced a bill against women, an equivalent one for males would be brought up by the other side? In a perfect world maybe.

I saw an ad referencing this proposed legislation, and this woman was actually saying that even if an egg was fertilized by a rapist, it was still life. That truly creeped me out, especially since the speaker was a woman who showed no kind of empathy for rape victims. Mississippi already rates very low in every measure of the quality of life among its residents, and the passage of this legislation will only make life infinitely worse for so many women and children. Every woman and man that has any social consciousness should be up in arms about not only what’s happening in this state but also in New Hampshire and other states where this kind of ignorance prevails. The consequences of this kind of thinking if it’s enacted into law are as obvious as they are catastrophic. The politicians who promote this kind of toxic nonsense are using abortion as a wedge issue and they stir up raw emotions in people who don’t have the good sense to think issues like these through to their logical conclusion. They are too foolish to realize that these politicians care nothing about them, and that they will have to live with the resulting disasters rather than the politicians who are only out for votes.

Both professional and amateur anti-abortion types are denying that birth control will be affected, even though some types prevent a fertilized egg from travelling from the fallopian tube into the uterus (which takes about a week, so is in direct conflict w/their statements). They claim that the RU480 pill is the only type of “birth control” that affects a fertilized egg. So–if a woman inadvertently has sex or is raped, how in hell would they know if she was pregnant when she went to get her RU480? Furthermore, what do they say about early natural abortions? There are more early natural abortions than there are actual pregnancies that mature into full term babies. Would they have a funeral for something they can barely see?
It’s none of their damned business. So, stay out of our bodies; we can make these decisions ourselves.
Liars, all of them.

There’s no such thing as a natural abortion. It’s called a miscarriage. If you wanted the pregnancy you would mourn it’s loss.

In fact, “spontaneous abortion” is the term for a gestational failure in the first trimester. “Miscarriage” is often applied when it occurs between then and marginal viability, but at one time, at least, that was called “immature delivery”. Premature to full-term delivery that delivers a dead natus is a stillbirth.

Just had a thought. “The Waltons” is a family show most of those people probably love. But they would have to rewrite one episode where Olivia (the mother) miscarries or has a natural abortion. Otherwise she would have to go to jail.

I watched a gentleman on MSNBC the other day talking about this, and he was obviously from Mississippi. It was his opinion that there is no way that this bill could fail and I probably have to agree with him. The only outrage is going to come when women find that their prescriptions to birth control are no longer valid. Because let’s face it they are not just targeting low income women in the long run.
People go along with this without thinking because of its religious nature. Religion has the universal ability To be used to creep in and steal your rights before you understand what is happening. These people think they are getting rid of abortion in their state, but what they will get in reality is vastly different. If you think about it, they are forcing the lowest income women to have children( by the very nature of removing birth control) and bringing large numbers of children and to the poorest areas. What outlet will these kids have when they grow up? The military. But that will only work if we allow this to happen. It will only work if the religious right is in power. We can’t let that happen

Who is forcing these women to have babies? Why can’t we as women be smarter than to put us and any children into these situations. I promise you if I couldn’t afford a child I wouldn’t be having one. There are plenty of ways to avoid it and not all require avoiding sex.

I guess I should clarify my statement and say that it is more or less human nature to have sex whether you are protected are not. By saying that the state is taking away your right to birth control it is more or less forcing women to have babies by the nature of taking that birth control away. There is no one coming to your house and forcing you to have sex and have babies.
The issue is not how you can get around it but are you in agreement with the state taking away your right to birth control?

The human nature argument is a lazy one. The only one forcing them into anything is themselves. It’s not like women don’t know what causes babies. I’m guessing you’re asking the gov’t to foot the bill for all healthcare. It’s one thing to offer preventative healthcare like screenings & mammograms but it’s different to force the gov’t to take up the slack when someone wants birth control cuz they can’t afford or don’t want children. They should be able to handle that with out the gov’t having to step in.

Viz: “forcible rape” is the only violation that qualifies as rape; only if the “prosecutrix” (not victim) “resisted to the utmost” (minority, disability, incompetence, intoxication, blackmail, fraud, and unconsciousness don’t count); the rape was medically verified and reported to police in a very short time period; and marriage between the “accused” and his “accuser” is a defense. Congress and several state legislatures have attempted to pass such bills. Theoretically, the felony would still exist; practically, almost no prosecutions would take place. Already, many don’t. Kits aren’t done or there are exorbitant fees on them; the ones that are done, aren’t processed. Already, most cases aren’t tried. If the said “reforms” pass, rapists will enjoy virtual impunity.

I’m so tired of hearing that limiting abortion will cause more babies and backstreet abortions. If that’s the only answer that these women see as a way to solve their problems then they’re either uneducated or stupid. Yes there’s a difference. Uneducated just means they need to be taught about sexuality better & stupid means they want their cake & eat it too. There are ways to have sex & not get pregnant when birth control isn’t available. And no I’m not saying to ban birth control.

They are also talking about eliminating some forms of birth control, the very thing that cuts down the demand for abortion in the first place. Since you have so much to say about how women “want their cake & eat it too,” doesn’t that go for men as well? The only way to have sex and not get pregnant is either have some other sex than actual intercourse or to use some method like the rhythm one, which is notoriously unreliable. These fools want to take women back to the Dark Ages and they need to be fought tooth and nail.

I think you are misconstruing but I said. What I meant was if this law passes it will severely limit birth control in certain areas. And in my opinion that will produce more babies because people will not stop having sex just because they might get pregnant. We are talking about Mississippi here, where the average IQ quota is “are you my sister”. If you take away birth control like these religious nuts are trying to do then you will have more babies
education works on a portion of the population. But if you look at the facts far more kids in school have sex than kids that do not have sex. And they are taught to not have sex or what the results of sex are before they are graduated. So education may be one of the low hanging fruits on a limb and I totally agree with you but it will not solve the problem of removing birth control.
As far as doing away with abortion which Mississippi is trying to do, yes there will always be a certain amount of the population whatever that percentage may be who will get illegal abortions. I am not sure how old you are but prior to abortions being legal the numbers Of illegal abortions were quite high. The number being quite high could be anywhere is from 5% to 15%. Which is probably about the same number of people who get abortions today legally>(A guess on my part)

During the Depression, quite a few married couples aborted one or more pregnancies. Poverty and hardship are the main causes for abortion and infanticide, with distaste for expending resources on socially valueless female children a heavy contributing factor in many parts of the world. The crank right policies exacerbate both these factors.

Having birth control is not what cuts down on abortion. Having self control does. Having other forms of sex or using the rhythm method is not the only way to avoid pregnancy. Natural family planning (which is not the rythym method) is more effective than any form of birth control.

Here are a few actual quotes from those fueling the fire to take away rights from woman to control their own bodies…have a barf bag close.
…”It’s very healthy for a young girl to be deterred from promiscuity by fear of contracting a painful, incurable disease, or cervical cancer, or sterility, or the likelihood of giving birth to a dead, blind or brain-damaged baby (even ten years later when she may be happily married).”
–Phyllis Schlafly, founder and leader of the Eagle Forum
“…Pro-choice activists “are usually pretty big, heavyset women who look like they’ve been over working Oktoberfest for the last six years. You know, there’s six beer mugs in each arm. All right, it’s a stereotype, but I swear looking at that footage, that’s what you see – a lot of people who are angry, women who have shed their femininity and adopted a masculine outlook and are fiercely protective of abortion, which is the holy sacrament of feminism.”
–Robert H. Knight, Director of Cultural Studies at FRC
…”When I, or people like me, are running the country, you’d better flee, because we will find you, we will try you, and we’ll execute you. I mean every word of it. I will make it part of my mission to see to it that they are tried and executed.”
–Randall Terry, founder of Operation Rescue, speaking of doctors who perform abortions, in an address to the U.S. Taxpayers Alliance, 8/08/95
