Obama Wins: House GOP Caves On Payroll Tax Cut Extension
By: Guest ContributorDec. 22nd, 2011more from Guest Contributor

House Republicans suffered a humiliating defeat today as they caved to pressure from President Obama and agreed to pass the two month extension of the payroll tax cut.
According to National Journal:
House Republicans on Thursday crumpled under the weight of White House and public pressure and have agreed to pass a two-month extension of the payroll-tax cut, Republican and Democratic sources told National Journal.
The House made the move after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., agreed to appoint conferees to a committee to resolve differences between the Senate’s two-month, 2 percentage point, payroll-tax cut and the House’s one-year alternative.
Obama stood tall, and the tea party’s latest hostage taking turned into a public relations disaster. The confrontation that occurred over the past few days has been weeks in the making. Nine days ago, the President threatened to veto the House payroll tax extension. Obama has been saying from the beginning that he wouldn’t sign the House bill. The best that Senate Republicans were able to get out of the White House was a moved up timeframe for a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline.
After House Republicans refused to vote on the Senate approved payroll tax extension, the pressure on John Boehner and the House GOP has been relentless. Yesterday, Obama called Speaker Boehner and made it clear that there would be no negotiations on the payroll tax cut extension. Today, Obama held an event where he told Boehner and the Republicans that not only must they vote on the Senate bill, but their only option was to pass it.
This is a huge and dramatic win for President Obama. For months Obama has faced criticism from some on the left who feel that he caved to the Republicans on numerous issues, and today’s victory should go a long way towards muting that criticism. Outside of politics, this is a huge win for the two million Americans who were facing termination of their unemployment insurance at the beginning of the new year.
The unnecessary battle over the payroll tax cut extension has allowed Obama to define himself and demonstrate that he is on the side of working Americans. This is a complete and comprehensive victory for the president that allows him to keep building momentum as he heads into 2012.
The Republicans have crumbled, Obama has won, and 200 million Americans can now enjoy a Merry Christmas.

I’m frankly surprised they did. The conservatives have demonstrated over and over for the last 3 years that they are perfectly willing to commit economic treason with the sole purpose of attacking Obama and trying to derail any chance for real change and reform to happen. They’d rather see the country burn to cinders than give change a chance.

Not true, they would lose even the conservative voters who are on the fence. They can’t afford to lose ‘em all! But they will.

I think the only reason they did CAVE after big mouth boner said they wouldn’t is the pressure put on them from repubs who are going to be facing the electorate next year.
Thanks for the good news, Jason!
President Obama can go to Hawai’i now and be with his family for the Holidays. He’s earned it.

I think the only reason they’re caving is because of the upcoming elections. They’re caught between a rock and a hard place. They don’t want Obama to win re-election, but they won’t win themselves if the economy tanls completely because of their stonewalling. But by caving, they insure that Obama wins this round, making him look like the good guy, and thus lose the support of the so-called “tea party” and fiscal conservatives in general. But they fail to comprehend that the brand of fiscal conservatism they espouse is what got us into this mess in the first place…

Scott Brown is the poster boy for GOPsters caught between that rock and a hard place seeking re-election themselves.
Does anyone really believe his protests aimed at the GOP Teaparty caucus was sincere or based on his concern for his constituents? Nah, me neither.
He’s going to go back to private life anyway in a year. It’s too late to rehabilitate himself. Elizabeth Warren will be a better Massachusetts U.S. Senator.

The President stood tall indeed! It’s an excellent precedent for future dealings with the Republicans–at least until the election bring a new Congress.

I knew that sooner or later those morons would end up backing themselves into a corner where no one should ever want to be. Their desire to thwart him at any cost could not have been any clearer, and I only hope that their unreasonable recalcitrance will be remembered by all voters.
