Mitt Romney couldn’t even introduce his running mate without committing a major gaffe. When the moment came to introduce Paul Ryan, Romney called him the next president of the United States.
Here’s the video:
The proceedings get off to a hilarious start as Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virgina referred to that Reagan/Romney energy. Speaking of energy McDonnell claimed that Obama has no energy policy, while using Obama’s all of the above term to describe Romney’s energy policy.
It is good to know that Romney is just as dull at 9 AM as he is the other 23 hours of the day. Romney cited Ryan’s values and character. He mentioned Ryan’s father’s death at an early age, but he didn’t mention that the man who wants to kill Social Security was also a Social Security baby. Romney claimed that Ryan doesn’t demonize his opponents, and he appeals to our better angels. You know the ones who are funded by the Koch Brothers and want to raise your taxes.
Romney called Ryan an intellectual leader of the Republican Party, which says a lot about the Republican Party. (By this point, Romney managed to suck the life out an enthusiastic crowd. What were once loud cheers became dead silence.) Romney again mentions his bold, specific, and achievable plan to strengthen the middle class, but again offers no specifics.
Romney goes into his previously failed middle class speech, but this time he added his work to welfare lie. Romney promised to create 12 million jobs. Romney also lied about the president cutting $700 million from Medicare, and didn’t tell people that their plan to preserve Medicare is privatization and vouchers.
This was all the same old Romney until he managed to show that he isn’t even competent enough to introduce Ryan as the next vice president of the United States. After Ryan’s big intro, Romney had to jump back in and correct himself calling Ryan the, “next vice president of the United States.”
Jesus, Romney can’t even get through introducing Ryan without a major gaffe. Although Romney’s slip was one of the rare bits of truth to come out of his mouth. He is hoping that Republicans show up to the polls to vote for Paul Ryan, because he certainly knows they aren’t showing up to vote for him.
Ryan delivered the standard boiler plate running mate speech, but the whole event was blown up by Romney’s mouth again getting in the way.
Mitt Romney couldn’t even announce his running mate without screwing it up. This is not going to go well. The relaunch of Romney 2.0 looks to be off to a dubious start.

So true…it is completely mind boggling to me that anyone can believe in Romney, and now adding Ryan to the ticket is just plain suicide. You state some very obvious facts here, re: lack of actual details about his plan(s)…most likely because there aren’t any, other than the same old same old…I wish everyone would read this post. Thank you!

Mr. Easley, I am also a one who benefited from SS when my father died when I was 13 years old. Ryan is a hypocrite, and one who suffers from historical amnesia.

I’m an example of what they WANT for Social Security.
Because of my medical conditions (and lack of work that I could handle because I didn’t have letters after my name), I applied for disability. I had a “nice” conservative judge, who in spite of 3 independent witnesses and documents from 5 different doctors, not only refused disability but used the law to lock me out of the system – specifically and in writing (I have to work 2 1/2 years full time – 10 quarters, before I will be permitted to apply again).
We went without power for three months because of that bastard, and I’ve been forced to beg for food on several occasions. It’d been easier to work IF I was able, but that doesn’t matter to the conservatives. He insisted that in spite of my limitations, I could work as a cashier or toll booth operator (the witness with me called him an unjust judge). (I cannot sit on a hard chair or stool for any length of time and cannot stand still on a hard surface for more than a few minutes, and must rest on a regular basis in a chair that reclines slightly.)
They are trying to do everything possible to take the money from us but not help those who need it… and I expect if those two bastards make it into office, Social Security will be only for the rich (have you ever run into rich people who draw SS, and brag about using it for their Greens fees or Yacht Club membership?).
The thing is, they not only do not see the people it helps (and refuse to acknowledge the help they get), but they want to do the opposite – take help away from those who need it and give it to those who greed it.

And I thought my situation was bad; I filed for disability in 2003 and the Bush 43 administration ruled against me for nearly six years, committing all kinds of corruption and fraud along the way. I got a good lawyer and re-filed in 2007; by the time it got to my second administrative law hearing, President Obama was in office and, viola! I got the Liberal admin judge instead of the ultra-conservative one previously. Now, I’m on disability, after fighting the government for nearly 7 years, most of it under the Bush 43 administration. The stories of A Walkaway and I should be cautionary tales to those of you young and strong enough to work but may not be able to do so through no fault of your own sometime in the future. Republicans in charge means that they’ll find every excuse to deny you your rightful benefits; Democrats in charge, you’ve got a chance; you’ll still have to prove your case with the Democrats in charge, but at least they’ll have not made the decision before the hearings/appeals start.

I don’t understand how he made that mistake. Those big az teleprompters were staring him right in the face. Can’t he read? And to think they criticize Obama for reading from teleprompters.

Romney’s introducing Ryan as “the next president of the United States” wasn’t really a gaffe. Romney wants the position but fully intends to let Ryan do the work. (Shades of Bush and Cheney.)

That made me laugh, and I wondered a little anxiously the way you do when a comic’s joke falls flat, if/how Romney would recover/make the correction.
I was very disappointed in Romney’s speech, he just comes across so wooden and disingenuous. Paul Ryan photographs beautifully, but then he spoke in that thin boyish voice, and I could not help seeing him–with his sky-blue eyes and prominent ears and nose, his various cowlicks, one like Dennis the Menace’s, standing up at the back of his head–in a yellow cap and short red shorts, Pinocchio in his early forties. And Romney, while a branch from the same tree, came off like Foulfellow the Fox.

This is what happens when your run your campaign with your brain on autopilot.
By selecting Ryan as his running mate, Romney has embraced the notion that the ultra-wealthy 1%er tail wags the GOP dog … and the middle class should get stuck with cleaning up the lawn.

Ryan wasn’t Romney’s choice for running mate. He was the choice of the far right members of the GOP and Bill Kristol and Charles Krauthammer. IMHO, Romney’s choice of Paul Ryan as a running mate is further evidence of his wimpiness. That he cancelled all pre-arranged interviews for today also says something. I think he is avoiding having to answer any questions about the Ryan Budget, which he has fully, and heartily, endorsed. He said a few days ago that he wanted to change the discussion from his tax returns to his policies, and now, he’s running away from discussing the Ryan Plan.

Both of them emerge from the relic of a former warship which neither has ever served his country. It wreaked of fakeness beyond belief. The woman beside them who looked possibly hispanic profusely wiping her face with an alcohol napkin. I use my own intelligence to gage the intelligence of others and I’ve given many the benefit of the doubt but it takes a special kind of stupid to align yourself with this brand of bigoted, lying and greedy politics.

I am not a Democrat by accident.
But even as an activist Democrat, I think there are some Republicans with some good ideas.
To me, the prime example is Mayor Mike Bloomberg of New York.
When Romney first announced his candidacy for POTUS back in 2007, I thought, ok, blue state GOP governor, passed health care reform, this guy could be interesting.
Romney immediately disappointed me by denouncing Romneycare and pandering to the GOP right.
Now in selecting Paul Ryan as his running mate, Romney really has me scratching my head.
Ryan has the least cross over appeal of any of the many bruited about for consideration as GOP Veep.
Why would Romney pick the one man mentioned as a veep candidate the Dems could pin with real power, and who is the most likely to turn off independents?
Clearly Romney believes the GOP conservatives, that is about 90% of the party, have not accepted him.
By nominating Ryan, Romney has run up a flare announcing he is still in trouble with his own party.
This is encouraging news for Dems, but as always the caveat is: do not become complacent.
The election is now clearly tilted in favor of the Democrats. But it is not yet won.
Treat everyone with respect, listen carefully to their views, explain
a0 the dangers of the Romney-Ryan ticket
and b the importance of Obama-Biden in continuing the needed measures to build our shared future.
Continue working for the election of Obama and other Dems, and don’t forget that even small donations help to spread the message.
Romney is in trouble, but it is not over until it is over.
