The pandering and somewhat desperate to make America like her husband speech that Ann Romney gave couldn’t hold a candle to the performance delivered by First Lady Obama last night. Each wife took the stage in an attempt to humanize their husbands, but only one speech was successful.
Ann Romney’s attempt at I feel your pain was this line, “We were very young. Both still in college. There were many reasons to delay marriage, and you know? We just didn’t care. We got married and moved into a basement apartment. We walked to class together, shared the housekeeping, and ate a lot of pasta and tuna fish. Our desk was a door propped up on sawhorses. Our dining room table was a fold down ironing board in the kitchen. Those were very special days.”
Instead of conveying empathy, at best, Mrs. Romney’s statements highlight just how out of touch she and her husband are with what people are going through right now. At worst, this was a load of bull that didn’t bother to mention that she and Mitt weren’t poor. They spent their college years living off of investment income.
In contrast, Michelle Obama was able to talk about the daily life of the Obamas just a few years ago, “Our life before moving to Washington was filled with simple joys … Saturdays at soccer games, Sundays at grandma’s house … and a date night for Barack and me was either dinner or a movie, because as an exhausted mom, I couldn’t stay awake for both.”
What was most telling about Ann Romney’s speech was what it didn’t say. Her speech lacked the little warm personal details that would help people understand and like Mitt Romney the person. Ann Romney’s speech read like a letter of recommendation.
Contrast the stiff trust me, Mitt will do a good job delivery of Ann Romney with what Michelle Obama had to say about her husband, “You see, even though back then Barack was a senator and a presidential candidate … to me, he was still the guy who’d picked me up for our dates in a car that was so rusted out, I could actually see the pavement going by through a hole in the passenger side door … he was the guy whose proudest possession was a coffee table he’d found in a Dumpster, and whose only pair of decent shoes was half a size too small.”
Those are the sort of details that wife a would/might find charming when she looks back on her earliest moments with her future husband. What Michelle Obama shared with America was real. It wasn’t a letter of recommendation. It was a look at the inside of a man from the vantage point of the person who knows him best.
Ann Romney’s speech focused on how Mitt Romney and only Mitt Romney was responsible for his success, but Michelle Obama countered the Romneys myth of the self made man, “And he believes that when you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity … you do not slam it shut behind you…you reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.”
Michelle Obama showed the country what a real First Lady looks like. Mrs. Obama spoke from the heart and through the perspective that she has gained over the past four years. Ann Romney’s perspective might not exist outside of the bubble created by her wealth.
What we learned from Ann Romney’s speech is that she thinks her husband is a great guy, and that we should just trust him. Michelle Obama’s speech took the traits of the man and showed why they make him a good president. Michelle Obama talked to the country, whereas Ann Romney’s speech cynically painted a half picture for voters.
First Lady Obama gave a speech by which all other spouses will be measured, and when that test is applied to Ann Romney she fails miserably.
Ann Romney may think she is entitled to the White House, but Michelle Obama showed exactly why she belongs there.

Grace, confidence, intellect, compassion, love and unity:
“And he [Barack Obama] believes that when you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity…you do not slam it shut behind you…you reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.” First Lady Michelle Obama
Mitt thought it was really funny to run a blind professor into doors. Republican humor.
The choice is clear.

The First Lady, Michele Obama showed the world what a class act she really is. America is very fortunate to have such a great President and First Lady representing us. We will be very lucky to have them for 4 more years. Everybody needs to vote!

What stayed with me in watching Ann Romney was just after the tuna fish comment: “it was in a CAN, can you IMAGINE eating FISH out of a CAN??!”
( I paraphrase here). If anyone can roll that segment it is an absolutely Marie Antoinette cake moment. The ‘thought of eating canned tuna fish’ revolted her and revealed the gap between the Romneys and the masses. Her behavior on camera said it all.
Mind the gap, folks. (as they say across pond). ;) As it is telling of what we’d get with a first family without a clue about mainstream America, who we are, what we eat and what are the issues which need attention.
Tuna-in-a-can gate….. says it all.

Only the worst kind of out-of-touch rich arrogant assholes buy a $12,000,000 vacation beach home in this kind of economy only to make plans to completely tear it down – and also run for public office at exactly the same time.
The Romneys are those kinds of assholes.

Now THAT was how you open a convention! When comparing these 2-It comes down to who we want as first lady representing us across the globe & Michelle wins it with a landslide. Sincere, down to earth, honest and open. Mrs. Romney is a very nice lady I am sure–she is just clueless. Just like her etch-a-sketch husband. You can 100% tell Michelle has her own mind, own opinions and ability to be a positive contribution to our country. Poor Ann obviously tries, but way too out of touch to come off genuine. 4 more years! Fired up & Ready to go!

Integrity & honesty! You can only show that, talk that talk, walk that walk, today no matter your station in life if you have been there before. This is part of the basic character traits, of any human, and Michelle showed us, that she & her husband Barack has those traits in spades, that no amount of money can change. Bless you Mrs. Obama! I loved every minute of your speech, & I am sharing with my fan base on Facebook!

No no no, terrible headline. Can we PLEASE get away from langauge about what women “look like?!” I know that wasn’t the explicit point the author was making, but the implicit message remains. Yes, Michelle’s speech was better, warmer, more accessible. But Ann’s wasn’t awful, it’s just that her material was more limited (Mitt vs. Barak). Focus criticism on the candidates.

The headline is appropriate. FL Michelle IS what a real First Lady looks like, is like. She is personable, warm, don’t to earth, passionate, love people.
Ann misses the mark, she is condescending, snobbish, out of touch.

Nice speech by Michelle, but unfortunately, it was fiction. The Obamas bought an expensive condo when they were first married and were hardly struggling. They had graduated from prestigious schools and were well paid for their work. Barack depleted their funds when he unsuccessfully ran for Congress, and Michelle, it is said, drew up divorce papers. This administration is not exactly penny-pinching. Secret service detail is provided for Valerie Jarrett at great expense. This is just one example of their wasteful spending and unprecedented in presidential history.

I loved every minute of her speech, she said it all from the heart, she can relate to us more than Ann did, sorry but that’s the truth. To say that we are better off today is hard to answer, but I would say, we would be far worse if Romney/Ryan win, so lets vote and give our President another 4 more

@1voice1vote… before you made this statement, you should have done your research, what LBKinLA said is absolutely true. Classy ladies don’t lie, even for their husbands! I can’t believe both parties are telling all these lies about each other, I guess the party who wins will be the party who has the most gullible supporters.

Man, what a stark difference. While the Romney robot ends up showing everyone that yes, she’s a right wing white rich bee-yotch with utter contempt for “you people” (by which she means tax payers, workers, the people who actually did the work that made her husband a billionaire) Michelle Obama showed the world once again how a proper lady behaves.
Mdm. Obama respects Americans, she knows what tax payers have to struggle with from day to day in the real America. She came from real America like the rest of us, not like that entitled free-loading tax-dodging crook Mitt Romney.

Michelle’s speech was fantastic with her heartfelt awesome delivery.
The noticable difference between the two speeches was to me, at least, the partnership between them and their spouse.
Michelle is a full-partner in the relationship. She stands beside him and no doubt gives him grief when she disagree’s with him. They respect & love each other.
Ann, I felt was ‘the caretaker’ of home & children, limited view. Almost sub-servient – (marriages in the 40-50′s) Mitt “takes care of it” – trust Mitt – he’ll fix it ….
Does that make sense?

How can you believe a word that she said, look at our country-we are worse off than 4 years ago, Who cares how Michelle speaks her husband isn’t doing the job. Don’t give people government money and drive us deeper in debt instead give them jobs so they won’t be dependent on the government. We will never get out of this mess if he is reelected.

What a stupid article. Laced with liberal paranoia. Barack and Michelle are two privleged upper middle class kids who went to private school and got their college education because they are black. I want to see Baracks student transcripts. I hold someone is waiting til the right moment to drop that bomb on every stupid person who voted for this incompetent nobody. America is in serious trouble if we get stuck with him another 4 years. This is what happens when we elect an inexperienced person who is a great speaker.

What she shows is exactly how out of touch she is from the people who put her husband into office and that she as well as the rest of White House think we are all sheep. Class, seriously? Not saying the Romney sheep are any better. Acting like these two are in any way better or classier, is just stupidity at it’s finest.

I am dirt poor, working on a PhD and budgeting what little money I have. Ann Romney disgusts me. She talks about living in a basement apartment with a door as a desk. Doors cost money, even second hand ones. What did they do steal it off of one of their neighbors apartments? Then the ironing board as a dinner table statement is really stupid. If ole Mittens was ironing his own shirts back then, the spillage from all that tuna and pasta would ruin the ironing board cover and seep into his shirts when the hot iron came in contact with both. They regurgitate story’s that they have read or seen on TV, and think that it will be believable. They really have no clue what it is like to struggle. And if I hear one more pity party about her having MS I am going to vomit. She has the money to pay for doctors and medications, I don’t. I have a disease, I can’t afford the medication for it, the doctor bills are so high that most of the little money I do get goes to pay them off and I can’t afford to get my cavities in my teeth filled. So fuck you Ann, don’t make up shit because it is insulting to those of us who are struggling.
