The Republican rhetoric is heavy with talk of support for our troops. Their actions are less than consistent with the rhetoric. There were times, such as following a vote in May 2011, when Republicans were outright disrespectful to the troops they are all too happy to support during speeches to their base and of course, during photo ops.
When Mitt Romney accepted the Republican’s nomination for President, he couldn’t find room in his speech to thank the troops. Perhaps it’s because only 1% of American families are directly affected by our wars. Investing a few words to thank the troops was simply asking too much from a man who is interested in support from a very different 1%. He certainly let us know where his priorities are.
Media reports about the wars are often romanticized accounts of our valiant troops fighting for freedom across the world. Our troops are valiant, but much more than we realize. We don’t hear about the conditions under which they live during war, or the conditions their families live under while worrying, hoping and praying for their loved one’s safe return.
Many of our political representatives, like Governor Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan don’t have a clue what going to war means. They have no idea what conditions our troops live under or how their families subsist on the meager income we pay them for their service.
Just ask Joel and Maria Meacham of Arizona about the realities of war. Last week their son, Paul, went to Afghanistan on his third deployment. He said good bye to his wife, his new born child, his parents his siblings and friends before heading to war again, to live under conditions he knew all too well. For the Meachams, there isn’t a day that passes without worries for their son’s safety and without an awareness of the conditions under which he and other soldiers fight our wars.
The Meachams understand the realities of wars fought in our country’s name. They understand the primitive conditions under which the troops live and the things that military families go without because Congress is more concerned about the 1% that buys our elections instead of the 1% who defend our freedoms.
Maria Meacham knows how it feels to be a military Mom who is smacked down by Congress for having an opinion about members of Congress who callously high five each after denying our soldiers a modest pay increase.
During our interview, I met a truly sweet woman, who loves her family and her country. She is both pleasant and articulate. I saw a woman who is well informed about politics. I saw someone who is far from a political activist, but does have opinions and recognizes injustice when she sees it. I saw someone who doesn’t get angry because a vote doesn’t go a certain way but she was offended by the juvenile behavior of Congressmen as they celebrated victory at our troops’ expense.
I saw a mother who understandably felt hurt and offended when Representatives Ben Quayle [R] and David Schweikert [R] from her state celebrated with high fives after denying a small battle pay increase for our soldiers, including her son.
Maria Meacham’s story began during a trip to the Nation’s Capital in May 2011. Prior to arriving in D.C., the Meachams visited with their son, Paul, in Kentucky. During that visit, their son invited several of his friends who served with him to a barbecue. The Meachams heard first-hand accounts about living conditions for the troops in Afghanistan. They heard that the troops live without fresh water and generators. They heard about the daily realities of combat.
The stories they heard remained present in their minds as they drove to D.C.
On Thursday, May 26, the Meachams went on a tour of Congress. They decided to take a rest and watch the afternoon session in the gallery of the House of Representatives. They were about to leave the gallery when Rep. Kurt Schrader [D-Or] rose to speak about a 2003 amendment to reduce battle pay by $180.00 a month. Rep. Schrader sought an amendment to have that pay cut repealed resulting in a $180 per month pay increase for our men and women in combat.
Here is video of the House vote on May 26, 2011 via C-SPAN:
Here is the event as reflected in the Congressional Record:
May 26, 2011 CONGRESSIONAL RECORD — HOUSE H3737
ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE SPEAKER PRO TEMPORE
The SPEAKER pro tempore (during
the vote). The Chair notes a disturbance in the gallery in violation of the
rules of the House. The Sergeant at
Arms is directed to restore order.
The Meachams decided to stay and listen to the speech. Congressman Schrader went on to speak of the reality that soldiers were facing many repeated deployments and they could use the extra pay. In rebuttal, Howard McKeon [R-Ca] spoke about budgetary concerns, denying Congressman Schrader’s suggestion that funds could be saved in other areas of the Defense budget to pay our troops.
Then it was time for the vote during which the Meachams heard an anemic yes from the Democrats and a very loud and energetic no from the Republican majority. This was followed by self-congratulations including pats on the back. They also saw a couple of Republicans, Rep Ben Quayle and Rep David Schweikert, exchanging high fives.
The Meachams described the high fives after the vote as “hurtful” and “insensitive.” Perhaps there was additional insult to injury since the two Congressman who high fived each other as if they just won a Basketball game, were representatives of the Meachams’ state, Arizona.
It was upon witnessing the high fives that a hurt and offended Maria Meacham, while remaining seated, yelled out:
“Pay the soldiers or bring them home!” two times. Then “Why don’t you take a pay cut to help the soldiers?”
The high fives, and self-congratulations stopped as the members looked up to the gallery in Maria Meacham’s direction.
Then a Security Guard tapped her on the shoulder and said:
Ma’am, you cannot be doing that.
She nodded affirmatively, said “okay” and did as she was told.
According to Mrs. Meacham, the Acting Speaker continued to stare in her direction and became annoyed. That was when he yelled:
The Sargent of Arms needs to take control of the Gallery now!
Never mind that the Gallery was already in control. Never mind that Maria Meacham, after being told that she couldn’t speak out, was sitting quietly in her seat.
Mrs. Meacham was told she had to go with the officer and Mr. Meacham was told he had to stay seated. As Mrs. Meacham was led away, another woman who was sitting in the gallery said:
Thank you so much for saying that.
Once outside the gallery, the police officers put Mrs. Meacham’s arms behind her back and cuffed her.
Then two Capitol Police Officers and two Congress Security Guards escorted Mrs. Meacham to a freight elevator. That was when an older security officer said:
Find her driver’s license and see what her name is…
Mrs. Meacham responded with:
You cannot be looking into my purse. I can find my license and show it to you.
The Security Guard responded by saying:
You are under arrest!
After Mrs. Meacham pointed out that she still has rights, they loosened one hand and allowed her to find her driver’s license.
While waiting for a female officer to search Mrs. Meacham, the officers asked each other what she said. She recalls someone saying: “I don’t know but we can find out.”
They did not ask her what she said.
Based on the conversation she overheard, the reason Maria Meacham was escorted to the Service Elevator was to prevent media access to her. It doesn’t take much to figure out why. Stories about Congress arresting the mother of a soldier for being outraged when Republicans high five each other after denying a modest battle pay increase wouldn’t look very good. It certainly would contradict the image that Republicans support our troops.
A couple of hours after Mrs. Meacham was led away, Mr. Meacham was informed he could leave the gallery. He was told that Mrs. Meacham was sent to a detention center a few blocks away. When he arrived at the detention center, he was asked which political group he belonged to. He answered that he was not with any group. Mr. Meacham was then advised that his wife would still be detained for a couple of more hours.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Meacham went through the process of finger printing and photographs. She was questioned about drug and alcohol use. (She would also have to undergo 3 consecutive drug tests with negative results, several weeks apart.) Sometime after the process began, Maria Meacham was Mirandized. When she pointed out that she should have been Mirandized earlier, the officer suggested she already knew her rights.
Okay, then. So if she appeared to be someone who didn’t know her rights, are we to believe that the Police would have Mirandized her earlier? Somehow I doubt it.
The fact that there was no reasonable basis to conclude that she was under the influence of anything beyond having a mother’s heart was irrelevant. Mrs. Meacham was still questioned about drugs and alcohol use and she still had to undergo drug testing for several weeks after her arrest.
A member of Capitol Intelligence wanted to know which group is taking responsibility for this action. then she got more specific.
Do you belong to the No Taxes without representation group?
Mrs. Meacham was not a member of a group and said so before explaining why she reacted the way she did.
It was upsetting about the way the Republican Congressmen were congratulating themselves and all I could think was about my son recently returned from Afghanistan and how he was airlifted 3 times and saw months of non-stop battles in the Pakistan border and how so many soldiers just do not return.
Eventually, the Meachams were reunited and escorted from the building via an unusual exit, perhaps because there was a concern that they might tell their story to someone in the media.
Had there been a notice in the gallery saying something about a requirement to be quiet, under penalty of arrest, one could believe that the acting speaker’s motives for ordering Maria Meacham’s arrest were purely about keeping order. Mr. and Mrs. Meacham, didn’t see any such notices, nor did they receive anything informing them that speaking in the gallery could result in arrest. In fact, the only consequence they were aware of was the possibility of being asked to leave the gallery and they learned that when the Security Officer told Mrs. Meacham to remain silent.
Had Mrs. Meacham shouted out during a speech or a vote, one may understand why there would be a justification to “bring order.” Had Mrs. Meacham shouted out again, after being admonished by Congressional security, one might also see justification. Had the Acting Speaker called for order, immediately after any of Mrs. Meacham’s 3 utterances before she was asked to remain silent, one may also have some degree of understanding that the Acting Speaker wanted to restore order.
None of those things happened, suggesting that there were other reasons for the Speaker seeking to “restore order” after order had been restored.
It’s also interesting that while Mrs. Meacham was driven to the Detention Center one of the officers advised her of what to expect.
We will go to a police detention center, it is a couple of blocks away, but there are a couple of bumps, we will try to go slow. Then they will ask you questions and fill the paperwork and given you your citation, and then you can go. We have several of these every week and don’t worry too much about it.
Mrs. Meacham believed that after the paper work was completed, she would get a ticket, pay a fine, and that would be the end of it. But, that isn’t what happened.
Mrs. Meacham faced a charge of disorderly conduct, drug test for several weeks; a couple of court appearances and she was barred from The Capitol for six months. Finally, the charges were dropped.
Maria Meacham reflects on her experience:
In looking back. It was naïve to express the discontent (I) felt at the moment, when observing the disconnect of the people chosen to represent the citizens with the needs of those who are doing the bleeding and the dying. It was mortifying seeing those adults behaving like school kids at some sporting event. While they were ‘young’ congress representatives, their behavior is immature for their years and they need to be more responsible to all their constituents.
And if the soldiers are protecting us, who is protecting the soldiers? Who speaks up in their behalf? What part of support the troops the politicians do not understand?
The politicians are always ready for a photo opportunity with the troops, but when the soldiers’ needs come up, it is only lip service.
While the soldiers do not complain, I see the needs of their families and their children growing without parents.
The cost of child care for one child, ranges between $50-$100.00 per week, so the $180.00 mentioned would not even cover the day care for one child. Military Service families often relocated in different posts away from their traditional support system and must rely on hired care for their children. Yet, the representatives do not turn away from the free parking and low cost meals at the Capitol and get to fly home any time they want. 23 of the current congress persons are receiving farm subsidies of nearly ½ million dollars per year!
Also there were no warnings of the penalties for the rules at the Capitol. They tell us do not bring food, batteries, cameras. The make the men remove their belts and suspenders. Yet, there is absolutely no warning about doing jail time if one chooses to express his or her opinion in the Gallery. Has the First Amendment been suspended?”
When asked if she would do anything differently, Mrs. Meacham suggested that she would have gone less quietly than she had.
One may wish to question the wisdom of a mere Citizen reacting to Congressmen high fiving each other after voting against the interests of our troops. One might think that the general public should at least be warned that reacting to anything they see from the Gallery of the House of Representatives, no matter how offensive or outrageous could result in arrest and criminal charges. In short, this isn’t the People’s House. We are merely guests invited to watch some political theater.
Maria Meacham spoke out both as a mother and as someone who actually cares about the troops. She had no reason to believe that she would face arrest. In fact, when asked by security to refrain from speaking, she was advised that she would be asked to leave if she spoke out again. But she was not warned that she could face arrest.
After she was arrested, Mrs. Meacham was led to believe that the consequences of her actions would be minimal. A citation, paying a ticket and she would be free to go on with her life. It wasn’t until sometime later, that she learned she would have to undergo drug testing, she would be ordered to stay away from The Capitol; that she would have to make some court appearances and that she could face a jail sentence.
As Mrs. Meacham pointed out, children go without their parents. Parents sacrifice time with their children and spouses to fight our wars. They quit their jobs to serve our country. They do this without complaint, though if anyone has a basis to complain, our troops do.
Aside from dealing with the worry that comes with a loved one being in harm’s way, military families are separated from their support systems of family and friends.
With redeployments occurring more frequently, we are asking more of our troops than ever before. A small pay increase would have been a meaningful way to thank them for their increased service in the name of protecting our freedoms.
It’s ironic that Maria Meacham faced a threat to her freedom for having the nerve to speak in support and defense of our troops while members of congress behaved with callous disregard for the people who protect our freedoms.

These destructive Republicans & Teabaggers want to take the USA backwards and we cannot let them. We cannot be submissive and watch them do so by default because of our apathy. Voters who have been paying attention to the GOP’s growing divisive behavior should remember how FORMER state senator Russel Pearce, the architect of Arizona’s official sanctioning of discrimination again, tried diluting the vote against him by planting a fake candidate in that race. He tried distancing himself from those sham-candidate reports. Pearce ALSO reportedly had baptized Teabagger JT Ready into the Mormon church sometime ago, and then tried distancing himself from JT Ready after the Teabag candidate killed people in his Mesa AZ apartment and then killed himself. People cannot keep being sheep because the GOPnP certainly are trying to lead the USA to slaughter, not unlike Prescott Bush dealing with the Nazis.
We must re-elect President Obama & Vice President Biden with a supermajority of Democrats supporting them so the USA can bring back those outsourced jobs and get back to mopping up the Trickle Down Economics cesspool.
Take care and hang in there, everyone.

Why doesn’t this story appear anywhere else? There’s no way to check the facts. While I believe the Republicans of Congress (and most other Replublicans too) want to keep freedom of speech only for those that agree with them, I’d like to know this is more than a story.
I’d also like to know why no one came to this women’s defense. There were people there that could have put a stop to this. The police officers shouldn’t be puppets.

Take a hint. The Republicans/”Good Christians” are really good at covering their tracks. They pulled the same shit back during Bush’s rule.
Indeed, as many people who have suffered at the hands of these monsters, only a tiny fraction of their victims ever have proof. Darla Kay Wynne, for instance – got lucky. When they killed her pets and torched her home, the fire only spread to the kitchen and was put out in time so that the evidence of wrongdoing wasn’t hidden.
Someone had cut the head off of her parrot and wrote on the wall “You’re next” – after killing her other pets. While I’m only aware of the public aspects of the case, I’m sure that if they (the fire department/authorities) hadn’t found that, it would have been written off as a mysterious fire or some crap like that… like they did to us and like they’ve done to many other people.
The “Good Christians” bungled that one. They don’t always fail.
Indeed, LGBT friends of mine have related that a lot of gay couples in this county have experienced being “Burned Out”… had their homes torched, but it never made the news or was investigated (probably like us, written up as a “fire with unknown cause”).

I’ve been saying for years now that this sort of thing is going to start happening more and more frequently, and I’m not in the least surprised at this.
It’s happening at the local level all over the place too. I’ve told of the things that happened to us, done by those Goddamned “Good Christian” bastards, because I exercised my freedom of speech and said things in opposition to their lies. I’ve mentioned other people who have been through the same, by name – because they’ve been public about their experiences (I don’t have the right to tell what people have shared in private). These Republican/Tea Party bastards are just imitating what is happening around the country, in the areas where their churches dominate.
The painful and sad thing is that people don’t believe us when we share our stories, sometimes even with proof. People (another blog) this week have even indicated that they didn’t believe we’d been put through all the crap by those “Good Christians” that we have. After the last time that happened here, I uploaded some pictures to some of the people on this blog, so there are people who can vouch for some of the things we’ve been through. The fact is, it all happened, and this is only an extension of that mindset. What we’ve been through is coming for everyone else, unless we stop it.
If the Republicans win the election, you can expect this to become the norm in daily life, unless what you say is Republican/”Good Christian”/Tea Party party line. Freedom is on the way out and unless we win and take them out of power, it will become history sooner or later.
Well, here is proof at a national level that they only want us to repeat the party line and have no freedom of speech.
Need I remind people that when Bush was in power, if anyone said anything against him in his presence, they were arrested?
THIS is the reality in much of America.

If I were in charge, a bunch of Congressmen would suddenly find themselves in basic training, and then… AFGHANISTAN!

You go shoot, kill, die, get maimed, for our “interests” we will sit back here and smoke illegal Cuban cigars, and drink smokey whiskey to your sacrifice on our fat butts.

Who the hell do they think will fight , as volunteers when their bosses(Congress) begrudge them a reasonable salary? To add salt to the wound, the bastards gleefully cut the monthly allotment by $180.00. They spend that on their lunch(when they are not eating in the House cafeteria)..Let’s send each of them to the front line for threedays, wearing pampers.I wonder how many of them served in any war.

“In looking back. It was naïve to express the discontent (I) felt at the moment, when observing the disconnect of the people chosen to represent the citizens with the needs of those who are doing the bleeding and the dying.” – Maria Meacham
No, Maria Meacham, not naïve, you are the very BEST kind of American patriot! Bless you and your family. Bless ALL of our military families. Bless Politicususa for posting Adalia Woodbury’s article. And to hell with the Republican obstructionists for their callous disregard for our troops. To HELL, Republicans.

God is no longer a part of our countries agenda,in which i truly think is the downfall of the structural integrity of this country in which we call “free”, I am no political genius,I am only praying to my God,that we set an example for our children, who are so confused at this point about political views, and have become brainwashed, because of the deceitfull ways of our government, that we need to include God in all that is important to us as a nation,or this nation will continue to fall apart,as we see more each and every day,we all will be held accountable either for the GOOD in which we can do for our country,or account for what I see as being a country in despair, due to a complete lack of faith amongst even the ones that LEAD US!

Funny, but it’s the people who insist that God has been left out of the country who are the worst offenders.
It’s the “Good Christians” who push to have people arrested for speaking.
It’s the “Good Christians” who try to legislate away the rights of others.
It’s the “Good Christians” who declared war on women, and are doing their best to strip them of any rights they might have.
It’s been the “Good Christians” who have threatened violence because they weren’t getting their way.
It’s been the “Good Christians” who started wars because others didn’t believe exactly as they did.
Throughout my life, it’s always been the “Good Christians” who have been a problem, and from recorded history, this has always been so. I just wish I’d realized that fact decades ago and walked away from the churches at a much younger age.
I rather think my wife and I would have had a lot brighter and happier life – and been FAR more prosperous.

I find it interesting that thiss took place over a year ago. It is also interesting that the debate on the floor was over procedure. The final vote was due 30 minutes after the amendment was offered. The complaint from the Republicans was that the amendment should have been added during the normal process and not offered 30 minutes before the final vote. Good job on twisting the truth.

This is what happens when the hypocritical, greedy and self righteous Republicans are abusing their power. When are you Republican supporters going to wake up and treat others with respect? This is an outrage and should never have happened. Have you all forgot that we are all Americans? You need to grow up and learn how to get along with others like a mature adult. Treat others the same way you want to be treated. Unless you have faced discrimination on a daily basis like those in the minority communities do, you need to keep quiet because your rights will never be violated.

Too bad Joe Wilson didn’t get the same treatment when he screamed “You lie” during the President’s State of the Union Speech.
If we didn’t learn the GOPTP’s gestapo ways during Bush’s “reign” of rights stripping, we’ll be in Nazi America if Romney gets elected. More & more we can see evidence of the brown shirts at work in this country.
It was an absolute disgrace the way this poor lady was treated & should have been front page news across the country.

I had the same question you did, took me a bit to find it! And didn’t he do a great job of keeping “order” when reps were high-fiving each other for a job well done?

People like Ms Meacham are real Americans. OK, I get it that the House has rules about disturbances from the gallery. But imagine if a middle-aged white guy from Kansas had shouted out “Good job!” Anybody want to suggest that he would have been arrested? He would possibly have been asked to be quiet and be seated, but I cannot imagine that he would go through what Ms Meacham did.
Republicans are all about freedom, free speech, etc. for themselves, but not so much for people they don’t like. Nobody’s been arrested at an Obama event for shouting disrespectful words at him, but it was entirely routine during Bush’s administration. Republican members of Congress seem to think it’s OK when one of their own shouts insults during an Obama speech, but have everybody who offers the slightest disagreement with them hustled out of the building and arrested.
Why do Republicans hate America so much?

I think it was correct to call her to order. Congress must not allow interruptions as a matter of procedure. However, the arrest and way she was treated, especially the drug tests are outrageous and that ought to get much wider coverage.
The presiding officer also could have called upon the congressmen from Arizona to stop the high-fiving, which is inappropriate on the floor.
This all totally apart from the 180 dollar pay cut being an insult. I did not know of this before and makes my opinion of republican sink even lower. Vile.

This is absolutely disgraceful and tasteless. Not the article, but our represresentatives. I am a Republican. I have served in the U.S. Army for the better part of the last 20 years, and I am currently in Afghanistan on yet another deployment. I have had one failed marriage, and number two isn’t looking so great either. I, like many others in the military, know all too well the sacrifices that come with service to our country. The problem does not lie within a specific political party, it lies within our impatiently selfish country. A country that doesn’t know what true sacrifice is, nor what selfless service is. A country that demands immediate results on things that can only be resolved with time and care, not allowing for proper, thorough resolution. Instead, they complain at every step, every phase, of every plan when an immediate resolution is not achieved, forcing constant changes in policy, and in turn destroying all accomplishments up to that point. A country that seemed to finally join together on September 11th 2001,after decades of tearing itself apart. But it didn’t. What happened instead was a few years of “Fashonable Patriotism”. Stickers, magnets, t-shirts and a lot of individuals patting themselves on the back while telling everyone just how patriotic they are, having never really done anything for their country. And when all the lazy, selfish Americans didn’t see the results they wanted, from the comfort of their living room sofa, they complained more. This story disgusted me, but it didn’t surprise me. Greed is greed. More often then not, Government is greed, regardless of affiliation, and we elected them. Who are they? They are us. The unfortunate truth is that most Americans are no different. It saddens me that this is what I defend.

I have long been an Independent. I was against going into Iraq when it wasn’t popular to be against it. I screamed that we are sending our children into danger that is unnecessary, we won’t recognize our children who do return, that we don’t have hospitals or veteran support services that take care of veterans from Viet Nam, and weren’t prepared to take care of those who came back to us in this one. I cried that we don’t have the means to correct the many issues in Iraq, and that we have home grown terrorists that we don’t know how to handle.
I cried when I read about the horrors our troops were encountering and felt helpless when, in screaming to bring them home, I was accused of not supporting them. My husband and I held each other and mourned for what our country was about to do.
I’ve never bought a patriotism sticker because when I cried to not do this and then to bring you home, I was called unpatriotic. I was told that America didn’t need people like me. I was told to find a country I could support.
When my granddaughter fell in love with a Marine, I worried for them. And when my great-grandson was born and was named for his daddy’s best friend, who had fallen in Afghanistan, I knew that I will never look at his beloved face without being glad that his namesake will never be forgotten. And I feel priveleged to celebrate Franky’s life, although I never knew him.
I wish that I were greedy. It would perhaps counter the feeling of utter helplessness when I read stories like yours … stories I knew would “be”, before they even started .. stories I cried about before we ever sent our troops to Iraq.
Bless you, John. Please come back to us well and not without hope for us. We are not all incapable of hearing.

I am Maria Meacham’s husband, we have been married over 42 years. Maria is a terrific wife, mother and grandmother. Her family is everything to her. We did not have any idea what was on the house agenda when we went to the gallery. She asked me if I was ready to leave when I noticed that a bill was coming up about military combat pay. We deceided to stay and see what this bill was. After the loud no vote by republicans there was a second roll call vote as requested by the democrats. After that second vote again defeating the bill there was more high fiving by some members. Maria turned to me and said “I don’t believe this, they don’t have a clue about the hardships of military families. She said “its like they put a dagger in my heart.” She was crying when she said “pay the soldiers, pay the soldiers or bring them home, you people take a pay cut. It took 4 trips to Washington D.C., thousands of dollars, drug testing that she had to pay for because the courts could not come up with the money, hiring a Washington D.C. attorney and over one year to settle the case. The case was dismissed on 9/14/2012 and this all started on 5/26/2011.
Our son called us on Sunday 9/9/2012 while he was waiting with his family to board a plane at Fort Campbell, Ky. for his third tour of duty in Afganistan with the 101 St. Airborne. He wanted especially to thank his mom for standing up for all the military that serves in combat. to him and his soldiers that know Maria she is their hero. That is worth every penny.

@Joel Meacham- I agree with John and Barbara above- Maria has shown to have the best quality of a true patriot, and that is to question what you think is wrong, and call out inappropriate behavior, as she did with the representatives from Arizona. IMO, *their* behavior was inappropriate, not Maria’s, but a symptom of a larger problem in our representatives; that is, no respect, no regard for those we call to ‘defend’ our way of life. Not only do I agree that our troops have been given short shrift, that our congress is apathetic at best, and callously negligent at worst about the well-being of our troops.
I salute you both, and especially your son and all his fellow servicemen and women- as a former US serviceman who was fortunate enough to never see combat, I try to never take that fact for granted. Maria has shown great character and compassion for all of our servicemen and women, and I am proud to call you my fellow Americans.

It is sad to have the Armed Forces used and re-used without regards to their humanity and needs. Yet, the Hawkish politicians are always ready to send the USA troops across the planet, but not willing to support their basic needs. It is truly an shame on the Republican Congress to behave so poorly.Thank you for bringing this behavior to light.
The other sad part, is that the average American voter knows more about who’s who in TV than who is running for office

Thanks for publishing this account of a mother’s love, and a true patriot – Maria Meacham. The radical
Right wraps itself in the flag while beating its breast with a Bible and expects that we do not notice.
These are the kind of stories that need to be given far wider readership and notice. The Districts where these Republican’s are representing should be papered over with these facts. They are scum. As painful as it might be, with the documentation offered here I would think 60 Minutes or Rock Center would be interested and this shines a bright light on the neo-con SOBs that send our children to war. What can we do to help you Ms. Meacham?
