Throughout world history, some of the worst atrocities known to mankind were committed in the name of religion going all the way back to Christian bible’s Old Testament. There are instances of ancient Israelites following god’s command to kill every man, woman, child, slave, and animal in a kingdom simply because the vanquished failed to abandon their religion and follow the Israelites’ god. The idea of Holy War did not end with the Old Testament, and the practice of shedding blood for the Lord became the rallying cry for the Crusades that pitted Christians against Muslims throughout the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries in several Christian military campaigns. Most Christians are aware that their religion’s namesake, Jesus Christ, taught his followers to pursue peace, and it is likely they can recite verbatim his admonition that if one “lives by the sword, they will perish be the sword,” and yet Christian religious leaders have been some of the most outspoken advocates for war.
America has avoided Holy Wars because the Founders kept a wall of separation between religion and the government, and one founder told Muslims America was not a Christian nation and had no enmity against Muslim laws or their religion. All that changed with the terror attacks of 9/11, and despite statements by George W. Bush that America was not at war with Islam in Afghanistan and Iraq, he often referred to those conflicts as Crusades. For Muslims, it is hard not to view Bush’s imperialism as anything other than a war against their religion, and after an American’s offensive video portraying the prophet Muhammad negatively, they must feel put upon by a so-called Christian nation that openly mocks their religion in front of the entire world.
At the Values Voter Summit last weekend, the Republican presidential ticket attached themselves to a religious hate fest that was contrived to demonize Muslims as liars and infiltrators, and called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to strike Iran before November 6 to begin a 21st Century Holy War. There is a concerted effort by Bush neo-conservatives serving as Willard Romney’s foreign policy advisors to entice Israel to strike Iran to begin what one Romney advisor calls “a very substantial war,” and their goal is not to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, but to begin a Holy War between Christianity and Islam. There has been a persistent push in America by Islamophpobes to demean the Muslim faith, and without exception it is the purview of Christian conservatives and religious leaders.
The current unrest aimed at America is being used by the Romney campaign to portray President Obama’s Mid-East policy as weak for not stopping the outrage caused by the anti-Islam video. In characterizing the upheaval against America, Joe Scarborough denied Muslims were raging at a film, and according to him it was merely an excuse. Scarborough said, “You know why they hate us? They hate us because of their religion, they hate us because of their culture,” but he fails to comprehend that the reason they hate us is because of the time and energy Christian conservatives have spent denigrating Islam knowing full well it results in outrage and violence. One can imagine the Christian outrage if Muslim’s demeaned Jesus Christ, especially in light of the recent outrage at other Americans who are unwilling to follow their biblical edicts.
When the controversy over a mosque being built near Ground Zero was raging, Republicans lined up to condemn the project as a recruitment center for Islamic extremists as well as an insult to those who perished in the attacks. In 2010, Romney joined a chorus of Islamophpobes by issuing a statement opposing it because of “the potential for extremists to use the mosque for global recruiting and propaganda.” One of the speakers at the Values Voter Summit said, “Islam’s number one enemy is the truth! America’s number one virtue is the truth! Islam obliges Muslims to lie,” and that “it’s a daily thing to lie about America.” It was a classic case of projection for Christians to impugn Muslims for allegedly doing precisely what Republicans have been doing with impunity since 9/11, and at a panel entitled “Israel, Iran, and the Future of Western Civilization,” attendees were told Christians were under attack by Muslims to convince evangelical fanatics to vote out President Obama who they claim is letting it happen.
One Islamophobe, retired general Jerry Boykin, called for Israel to run a “pre-election strike” to assure Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has U.S. support, implying a war with Iran will guarantee a victory for Willard Romney. The retired general said such a strike will “have impact globally because the Iranians will unleash a reign of terror on America.” There is a large contingent of evangelical Christians and Mormons who believe retaliation by Muslims on America is one of the consequences of God’s plan, and a requirement for a war known as Armageddon in the Middle East before Jesus can return to earth. Boykin said, “Every Iranian, every Shia, every Muslim that is killed in a return nuclear strike becomes a martyr and goes straight to heaven,” and it is the same theology Christians count on to bring a quick rapture to heaven for the evangelical faithful.
The Christian fanatics seeking global Holy War with Islam are being bolstered by Israel’s prime minister who said, “Iran is guided by a leadership with an unbelievable fanaticism. It’s the same fanaticism that you see storming your embassies today. Do you want these fanatics to have nuclear weapons?” It is sheer hypocrisy for Netanyahu who leads a country that has killed Muslims by the thousands, developed nuclear weapons, bombed Iraq and Syria to destroy their nuclear programs, and is making plans to start a Holy War with a sovereign Muslim nation that America will end up paying for in lives and money. It must be the first time in American history that a foreign leader is campaigning for a presidential candidate to drive this country into a war that will certainly engulf the entire region, if not the entire world.
Romney has been warmongering for the past six months, and as his electoral support wanes, there can be little doubt he and Netanyahu are using Middle East violence to affect the upcoming election. The neo-con warmongers and Christian conservatives could not care less about the state of Israel, because the impending Holy War is not about Israel’s existence, but about killing Muslims and bringing about end times. The violence targeting America started with the release of a YouTube video because Christians hate Muslims. Muslims do not hate Americans; they hate Christians who are provoking violence to spark a war to wipe Muslims off the face of the Earth. It is a 21st Century Crusade, and Americans must understand that Romney and his neo-con acolytes are not panting for war between America and Iran, but a war between Christians and Muslims to incite the battle of Armageddon and a quick rapture to heaven. For Israel, it is another opportunity to revisit an Old Testament extermination of a people based on their failure to obey the god of Abraham, and like the god of the Old Testament, they will settle for nothing less than the total annihilation of every man, woman, child, and animal associated with the Muslim faith and it is tragic that the lion’s share of the destruction will come from a country that claims the religion whose namesake preached tolerance and peace.

In fact, Netenyahu is a useful idiot, whom the CNP/PNAC cadre see as a tool for starting an eternal war of conquest that will enable them to establish an ever-expanding empire abroad and an ever-tightening hierarchical tyranny at home.

Extremism is extremism, the religion worshiped is irrelevant. Always an excuse to war, victimize non-believers on the path to justify cruelty or genocide. Both sides always send the sons/daughters of believers but never their own.
Ugly side of zealotry.

It’s not about the belief, or who or what is worshiped–that’s exactly right.
It’s about the behavior of the zealot; that is not an opinion but a fact.
The bumper sticker slogan should REALLY read:
It’s not about the belief, it’s about their behavior.

Wow! You have taken a great deal of lic. w/everything you have said. Before criticizing the Jews, or God for demanding they kill every last one of their enemies, you need an in-depth study of scripture. With an historian that understands Greek & Hebrew.
Even before this nation was an ind. country, European & American sailors had been under attack by Muslims, & even afterward. You’re right about one thing. The U.S. was settled by Europeans who wanted the freedom to worship as they please, without the threat of death hanging over their heads, for not being Catholic. They also, extended the same courtesy to others, just as we still do.
As far as the war, we were all behind it with the ok given by Cong. and a huge coalition of nations to help. We were attacked, because we had a leader, who was called a paper tiger, by our enemies. They assumed all Am. men were the same. That was their mistake. The recent attack in Lybia was planned. Canada pulled their people out a week ahead of time. If Obama would do his job, and go to his security meetings, he would have known as well. He was busy with more important things; raising money for his campaign, partying with movie stars & taking much needed vacations from all his hard work. As far a Christian leaders trying to provoke a war w/Iran? Please.. Iran has threatened to destroy Israel. They want to run every last Jew into the ocean. They are the little Satan. Then they want to come after the Big Satan. That would be us by the way. The P.M. of Israel is terrified & for good reason. How would any of us feel if the Pres. of Mex, or the P.M. of Can. decided they wanted to take our land from us. To do so, they threatened on almost a daily basis to destroy us. In the meantime, their insane leader, was building a nuclear bomb.
Israel wants someone to have their back. They don’t think we do at this time. Romney wants them to know that he will. We really need J.Bolton as Sec. of State. He’s the only one I believe truly knows what…

Thanks for the article. I wasn’t sure whether you thought Allah was not the God of Abraham or the right wing “christians” did. Allah is the God of Abraham. Read the story of Hagar and Ishmael in Genesis. The Arabs claim Ishmael as their father.

True Elizabeth, that’s the irony. Israel doesn’t accept any religion that claims Allah, (Yaweh, Lord, or whatever), and a Messiah, prophet, or latter day saint. And yet although they all do obeisance to the same god, and claim The Pentatuech as foundational to their faith, Israel and Christians take issue with Islam and not Mormons. It is an extremely peculiar situation, but then again, to a Secular Humanist they are all bollocks.

I’ve read some kooky comments on here, but wow, Paulette – are you off your meds or what? JOHN BOLTON??? Sorry, that’s not too likely to happen. Yes, we went to war – based on nothing but a pack of lies. And a huge steaming pile of them KNEW it was a pack of lies THEN. Premeditated attack in Libya and CANADA was in on it? Uh huh…phew…
I suggest you listen to some of the recordings of that VV summit – they are very much beating the war drums for Bibi, salivating over jump-starting another holy war, a la Crusades. You’re just about as wrong as wrong gets.

Oh wait; remember the Christians who were offended when an artist, who received federal funding from the government, displayed the cross in a jar of urine? Remember when they tracked that artist down and beat him to death, then cut off his head? No, of course not. They were offended, they said so, they did not like having the money they send to DC used to pay for something so offensive to them. That’s were it stopped. They still have the same free speech rights as people who hate them in this country. There is no comparison to what happens in the M.E. by Muslim radicals. Why do you think so many Muslims come to this country. They are sick of it.
You all may hate Christians, but remember, Christians were the ones in Europe and the US who fought to abolish slavery. The Bible is the basis for most of our laws, and frankly, the first women’s rights activist was Jesus Christ Himself. Thank you Lord.

The slave owners used the Bible to justify slavery. The churches in the US that opposed slavery… well, look them up. They’re despised by the “Good Christians” and generally thought of as non-Christian today (they/we still exist). The Slave owners even had people preach to the slaves… a form of the Gospel that was meant to keep them in their place.
The Bible is NOT the basis for the laws of this land. English common law is one basis, the political system is a blend of the Great Peace of the Iroquois Nation mixed with a little of ancient Greek philosophy/politics. My people have been matriarchal long before Jesus walked this earth, and still in some ways are (at least we honor the old ways).
As far as the mideast, you need to read some history, and learn about how the present nations came to be. Learn about the nasty EUROPEAN politics that divided not only that region, but Africa as well. There is a lot of bullshit taught as history today and it still goes on, mainly in “Bible-based” churches, schools, and so on.
Here’s a couple of historical/archaeological tidbits for you. (1) Some of the towns destroyed by Joshua didn’t even EXIST in his time. Others just faded away over time. Only a few were destroyed in war. (2) The son of Ramses the Great (the firstborn of Pharoah) was killed, all right… in his 20s, in battle, killed by I believe a Nubian warrior. NOT by an “Angel of Death”. There were no plagues in Ramses’ time, but a small group of people from the Levant (the Egyptians had a common name for all of the people of the region) were expelled from Egypt by Ramses for fomenting rebellion. The Egyptians didn’t build their pyramids and cities with slaves… they used skilled workers who were treated quite well. There is NO evidence of the great trek in the Sinai desert… and if there had been, the evidence WOULD be exist. I could go on and on.

I should also add that there is evidence that a lot of European tribes were at least matrilineal (but NOT patriarchal) up until around the time of the introduction of Christianity to their area.
Chew on that a bit.
And for another bit of enlightenment, I am still Christian, although I go through periods that I wished I wasn’t.

This article is wrong to suggest that Christians and Jews are more dangerous than Muslims. We must avoid this “holy war”- but clearly the Muslims want it just as bad as the Christians do. Fanatics are fanatics and Islam has them in a greater percentage than any other religion.
