Let’s Be Honest, Red States Want to Secede Because the White Guy Didn’t Win
By: RmuseNov. 14th, 2012more from Rmuse
One of the necessities, and difficulties, of a nation is keeping the population unified and being of one accord despite ideological differences, ethnic diversity and geographical location, and it goes without saying there will always be segments of the population who feel displeasure or disappointment when their leaders do not share their ideological bent. It is a sign of immaturity for individuals or groups to take their disappointment to extremes when circumstances fail to meet with their approval, especially when they are dissatisfied at the outcome of an election.
In the mid-nineteenth century, an entire region of America attempted to break away from the Union because they could not comport a nation without slavery, and the result was America’s deadliest war and division that remains steadfast in the minds of the Confederacy’s descendants today. The contentious issue over slavery was apparently disappointing enough to Southern States that they seceded to form their own nation, and since 2009, there have been several attempts to reassert state’s sovereignty that are precursors to secession, and after President Obama was re-elected last week, residents in over 30 states filed petitions requesting to withdraw from the United States to form their own independent nations.
The idea of leaving the United States is certainly a drastic measure just because a Republican (read white man) failed to win the presidency, and yet the rash of petitions being created to secede demonstrates just how racist and disgruntled a segment of the population is. None of the petitioners have the courage to put in print their real reason for wanting to leave the country because it would expose their rank bigotry and racism, so they proffer the notion their rights and liberties have been assaulted under President Obama’s Administration. Nearly all of the petitions to secede use the same language and cite the government’s disregard for the Founding Fathers’ beliefs typical of disaffected teabagger types, and the Texas petition represents the rhetoric Americans have heard leveled at President Obama since 2009.
The Texas petition claims; “The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights and it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union to protect its citizens and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.” There are myriad issues with the Texas resident’s petition, but none more obvious than it is unconstitutional for a state to secede from the United States according to a Supreme Court ruling in Texas v. White, 74 U.S. 700 (1869) that says unilateral secession is unconstitutional.
The Texas petition specifically cites the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) and National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) as egregious impositions on their liberty, but they did not seek secession when their former governor, George W. Bush, enacted those programs in 2001 and 2008 respectively. In early 2009 shortly after President Obama took office there were approximately 37 requests to secede from the Union and like this week, they were instigated because an African American man was elected as President. Texans had seven years to petition the Bush administration to peacefully secede, but he was the right race to impose “egregious impositions” on their personal freedom and liberty.
The other issue with leaving the United States is the crushing debt individual states like Texas owes the federal government before they exit. There are few benefits Texas, or any other recalcitrant state’s, resident’s enjoy that did not originate with the federal government and funded by all the American people and if they are intent on leaving, then there is an accounting that may dissuade them from yearning to be their own nation.
For one thing, those nice Interstates Texans use to traverse the state and move through other secessionists states are the property of the U.S. Government and they will either refund the cost of building and maintaining those highways or pay a toll for every mile because Texas, “you didn’t build that;” the federal government did. The rest of America wishes your relatives flying in to your sovereign nation good luck because the FAA that keeps air travel safe will be absent because they work for America’s government, not Texas. Texas boasts a lower than average unemployment rate, but after Texas refunds the stimulus money Rick Perry took from President Obama, the jobs and money flowing into state coffers will cease to exist because Texas “didn’t create those jobs,” President Obama’s stimulus did. Texans will also see an increase in retail and food prices because as a foreign nation, residents will pay American import and export taxes for every package that crosses your international border, and when drug cartels begin cross-boarder incursions into Texas, they had better summon other sovereign nations’ like Arkansas and Alabama for assistance because your contempt for America’s Border Patrol disqualifies you from protection afforded members of the United States you hold in such low regard.
There are myriad benefits every state in the Union enjoys as members of the United States regardless if the president is a Democrat or Republican, black or white, and yet twice in four years racists, religious extremists, and disaffected malcontents are actively seeking to separate from America. However, it is the secessionists’ claim that their liberty and rights are under attack that begs explanation because as recipients of America’s constitutional protections, even Texans are treated equally and one wonders exactly which liberties and rights have been abridged by the federal government or President Obama. There are only two explanations that make any sense why Americans in over 30 states seek to secede from the Union, and neither one is reasonable. Either religious extremists are upset their interpretation of religious liberty is infringed upon by prohibiting them from imposing their religious bent on the rest of the population, or they are racists. It is likely both.
Of all the states’ residents begging to leave America, Texans have the least reason to secede. It was their former governor who embroiled the nation in two unfunded and unnecessary wars, tanked the economy, and allowed unregulated banks to destroy millions of Americans’ jobs for eight years and they praised Bush throughout his terms in office. But when an African American is elected President and cleans up Bush’s mess and rebuilds the economy, they want to secede and have the temerity to claim their liberties and rights are under assault. However, it is not just Texas residents appealing to secede, and the recurring theme is President Obama restricts petitioners’ rights and liberty and is responsible for the economic downturn when he was all that stood between a Bush clone finishing W’s handiwork and recovery, but the problem is he is not white and that is why over 30 states filed petitions to leave America.
It is high time disaffected whiners sit down and thank whatever deity they worship that President Obama has a vision for America that includes continuing economic recovery that helps all Americans succeed and not just the wealthy. The Texas petition said America suffers from the federal government’s neglect to reform domestic spending, but spending, like taxes, are at the lowest levels in decades, and the deficit ballooned under the weight of Bush’s wars, tax cuts, and economic malfeasance Republicans are wont to continue if they were victorious last week.
This is the second time in four years there are over 30 impetuous petitions to secede from America and they are over the results of an election. The petitioners all cite the Founding Fathers original beliefs as justification for leaving America, but in devising a representative democracy, the Founders assumed Americans would be adults and accept the will of the people and their selection of the President whether they supported them or not. That simple fact is lost on the secessionists whose real reason for wanting to leave America has nothing to do with the Founders, the Constitution, or the economy and everything to do with the fact that for four more years, an African American man will occupy the White House and finish cleaning up Republican and the white guys mess; but it’s not about race, right?

You have the right to believe and support whatever idiotic and partisan bandwagon that uses weak arguments to conceal their thinly veiled racism and perpetual inequality. Texas is a good example of the white man trying to keep everyone else down. I know this because I live in the most conservative county in Texas, Williamson country. I have seen first hand to hypocrisy of people who try to appear patriotic when they have no clue what this country really stands for. I wrote an earlier post in regard to my feelings about my home state and I would like for you to read them. This is one white man who will not succumb to racism and bigotry and sell out to hate all because the black guy won. Look more closely at your allegiances and ask yourself “would I be in favor of all that the GOP has brought against the President if he were a white Texas Democrat?” I sincerely doubt it.

I’ve always appreciated anything that Tim Wise said, but I wish I could have put a comment on the page with that video.
I would have said that yeah, white people get to start on third base while others are forced to wait their turn at bat. If you turn out to NOT be white and they find out that truth, they force you to the back of the line waiting for the chance to swing.
(When I learned that part of my ancestors were actually American Indian and it “got out” to the business owners in this state -I admit I’m the one who let it out, because I thought it was something to be proud of – we lost just over 60% of our customers in one month and while I already knew how sneakily racist this country is, I still didn’t know how viciously bigoted it really is.)
I for one don’t like the calls to secede. I want the bigots taught that they don’t have the “rights” they think they have, and that they should NEVER have those “rights”
You see, I care about the poor and minorities trapped in those states, and I KNOW what will happen to them should the damned bigots ever gain the “right” to return to the days of Jim Crow, lynching, and slavery.

It’s spelled “secede”. I am from Austin, Texas. And I can tell you that for the most part Texas “succeeds” in very little outside of the occasional football game, margaritas, and BBQ. Having high teen pregnancy rates, high rates of high school dropouts, and one of the highest levels of uninsured is also nothing to sing about. Molly Ivins put it best. “Texas: Mississippi with better roads.”

I read on Free Republic (using a proxy, of course — always wear protection) commenters saying they were signing every “secede” petition available. So to answer the question “how many are signing multiple petitions,” the answer is “lots” and the “multiple” is “all”.
If these traitors really want to leave the Union — let ‘em leave (if they can find a country that will take them and can get a passport). But they’re not taking the land with them. We already won one war to keep the Union together. I expect we could win another one.

Ok. So lets say secession is granted. The union pulls out all army, navy, air force, marines, national guard, coast guard and empties and destroys all munitions and munitions factories. Don’t forget. Comercial aircraft, boats and barges’ ships, tele-comunications and everything else government ran would be halted. Dont worry. Your new i-phone will make a great paper weight. Then halts all U.S. imports of all goods to those states. Hey, you ain’t with us then you’re against us. How are they gonna make a stand. You’re free range now. You’ll be speaking japanese or russian or german or something inside of two years or less.Secession would cost your state way too much capital and more than likely bankrupt your state. No country is likely to stand by and wait for you to build your independence or your economy. I’m sure Mexico would bleed dry at the chance to regain Texas.
Then theres this. Even though secession will never happen any governer or senator who supports this idea has totally wiped out any possible chance of becomming president of the U.S.A. Do they think they’ll be voted into office by a country they did’nt want to belong to before they chose to run for presidential office?
Oh wait. You’ll already be bankrupt since what money your new country already has will be useless to you. E. pluribus unim, el mono. That money belongs to the U.S.A. No more food stamps, education, unemployment insurance, or electricity. You will all starve to death before the next year ends. You ain’t comming over here. You and your family are now illiegal aliens. And you’re definately not going to start up your own militia. What you going to use? Sticks and rocks? And even if the capital was there to suport a militia none of you are going to put down your phones, and step away from your p.c.’s, t.v.’s, and video games long enough to even attempt to make a stand. Now, i gotta ask. Are you sure you really want to do this? Don’t look so good when you eyeball the big…

That said I wanted to also include that I am a Democrat and voted for and help campaign for Obama during both of his successful campaigns. As a white male native Texan I am terribly ashamed at those morons who are so filled with ignorant rage that they would consider seceding from this great country…all because they cannot get over how wrong they were and continue to be. Of course they will never admit their stupidity and will defiantly and pridefully defend their despicable minds and hearts because they truly are total morons and traitors to all that this nation stands for. I am moving out of Texas in 6 1/2 months thankfully and finally to New Mexico. I am so very sick of this bullshit state and all of its bullshit good ol boy whitey racist fucks that run it. I have on several occasions traveled outside of Texas and when I return across the Texas border I give the “welcome to Texas” sign the bird and say out loud “fuck you Texas.” I am proud to be leaving this place and I am counting down the weeks until my family and I can finally leave for good. Let’s be honest. There are racists in every race but it is a small percentage. You cannot stereotype an entire race or group because of a few jerks. I’ve never voted for Obama and I’m white but I tell you what, I was proud of our country for electing an African American. I saw it as a huge step for all of mankind. I didn’t vote for him because I disagree with his approach and policies, that’s all. There are some pretty nutty leftists out there too but that doesn’t mean I paint the entire democratic party that way. The party has some great beliefs and philosophy. I think the real issue is Mr. Obama is just too far left for a lot of Americans. We need to return to civil discussion about the issues and respect each other (except for racist supremacist jerks). If we don’t, the once great America is doomed.

America prospered because of the stolen lands and stolen hard work my people performed, while thinking they had “God’s blessing” to steal from people who acted more Christian than they did (I would argue were TRULY Christian unlike the monstrous “Pilgrims” and other invaders). Do you really think that they came to a “pristine wilderness”???
THIS IS REALITY. They came to lands that had been deliberately managed for the maximum production of game and crops. They took over farms, and were so stupid that they couldn’t feed themselves and nearly starved. If it wasn’t for our ancestors, they wouldn’t have survived… and look what they did to those who treated them with true Christian kindness.
Sometimes I wish my ancestors hadn’t been so truly Christian (but then I wouldn’t be here).
I’ve learned to associate “Good Christian” with the words Bigot, Racist, and Ignorant (maybe even Stupid).

Here’s where it gets dirty: After our eleceted officials take office they don’t always do what we want them to, they only listen to those with the most money, and not necessarily power. I love my country and would die in its defense, but it is not perfect.
I am an African American, a bit more than our president, and I hear the conversations that end before I enter a room, and this is as much about the color of The Presidents skin than anything else.

GO Ahead,…succeed. What a bunch or whinny babies. The black guy won, I’m not playing anymore!

chillyard….at least spell the word right. It is “secede” not “succeed”, unless you want it to succeed, which means to have success. You have to spell correctly to make your meaning clear.
As someone above said, I doubt these people signing these petitions realize they will lose medicare, social security, good roads, weather warnings, air traffic controllers, all the money from military bases, protection via the military….ad infinitum.
We settled this in 1865. If Alabama were to secede, they couldn’t pay for stop signs, and my state of Oklahoma would revert to dust and tumbleweeds.

Oh. My. God.
I’ll be entirely honest. I live (was NOT born) in the South. I didn’t vote for Obama.
I’m sure some will stop reading my comment right there with their minds already made up. But for those of you that keep reading (firstly thank you) let me go ahead and say it to get it out of the way.
I am NOT racists.
Do I doubt that there are some who are so unhappy with Obama because he’s black? Of course not. I know racism is still alive and active both in the South and in other parts of the country. But to say that everyone who is casting a vote to succeed from the nation is bigoted or racist and that they want to leave JUST because the President is black is ignorant.
No. Not just ignorant. Ignorant implies that they are just lacking in information or knowledge. No, that, my friends, is pure stupidity. That is a generalization to end all generalizations.
Do I support any state succeeding from the Union (even one of the southern states in which I live)? No. A resounding empathic “NO”. All of my brothers serve in the military. My family is patriotic. I am beyond proud to be a citizen of these United States of America. I would never willingly relinquish my citizenship or live in another country (even one of my current state’s making). But to say that all those that DO want to succeed are racists is just WRONG.

“…But to say that all those that DO want to succeed are racists is just WRONG.”
So, by avoiding the issue of racism, everyone else who believes otherwise is wrong because you don’t get it/want racism off the table by proclaiming your judgment-call via black/white thinking?
What is missing from your premise is the necessary structure for getting to the root of the problem–the “guv’urn’mint” is always the old fall-back straw man…but acting like hypocrites based on white privileged isn’t any kind of a real “problem” in our society? Maybe you should take a few minutes and watch:

No, what’s ignorant is continuously spelling secede “succeed” when there are a half-dozen or more corrections in this very thread — that is the very definition of ignorance: you signed a petition to do something you can’t even spell.
Get a grip. We know for a fact that the calls to secede are driven by racists — that there are a few misguided persons like yourself who claim they aren’t racist, but want to secede (see how I’m spelling it?) doesn’t change the FACT of racism in this country.
We live here, remember? We’re privy to the reality — and white male anti-racists living in rural areas like myself hear the racist men talking racist all the time. The rest of us can go to Stormfront — the white nationalist forum — and see for ourself the support that racists are giving to the secession joke.
Let me be plain: not gonna happen. Even if you get a million petitions to let Texas secede, we’re NOT breaking up the Union. Not in the 1860s and not now.

Oh, Texas. First of all, there are racists everywhere. I’m not saying I think ALL of Texas is racist, but I will say there was not much diversity in the places I lived. I spent a year of my life after highschool in Texas. Lackland AFB, in El Paso, and then Sheppard AFB. This was in 2005. The near middle of Dubyas career. I then went off to war, to defend those TEXANS, and the rest of this great country. All under the direction of George W. A Texan. So, I did not vote for Bush his first time (under the age of 18), nor the second (still under the age of 18). But I did go fight his war. America’s war, because Bush Sr and Bush Jr were chomping at the bit to get to Middle-Eastern oil.
So, under the leadership that the great state of Texas has given us, look at what has transpired. 9/11, Americans shit themselves, call for a more stringent airport security, Bush answers America with the TSA. No whining, except over the increased wait times.
Now, Texas is saying that they’re fed up with the TSA that Bush from Texas put into place? So, I think that Texas SHOULD secede, pay back all the fed debt, take down that wall on the Mex/tex border, put a wall up around Texas, and treat the texans like they treated the Mexicans trying to come out of poverty to this great place to make something of themselves. Texans would be raped and pillaged by Mexico, as Texas IS MEXICO. And America wouldn’t be anything if it weren’t for TRUE Americans True Americans are the Navajo, Cherokee, Sioux and Iroquois Indians (and Mexicans) WE “AMERICANS” kicked out of their own land, took their heritage, and raped them.
I’d like to see them take back what is THEIRS.
So please, President Obama, LET TEXAS SECEDE! Since we wiped out the indians, I would love to see all of Mexico take back Texas by force, and then Texas will have something new to cry about. No military to protect them, a mass Mexican invasion, and if lucky enough, Anal rape. By a Mexican.

It appears that most people are bothered about their race. Their problem could be solved by tracing their genealogy back to Noah’s time. We have Ham, Shem, and Japhet. Shem is the chosen linege. The holy writ is a history of these people only. Mary, through her husband, Joseph, traces back to King David. David runs back to Abraham. Abraham is the father of all nation’s blood lineage except one, tracing back in to the house of Joseph in Egypt. Most people don’t know who they are,and this is the cause of racial disparity.

(Laugh)… better sit down. While there may have been a Noah, and there might have even been an “Ark”, there wasn’t a “Worldwide Flood” and if you read all the other flood accounts of the area, there were people on the shore when Noah landed, and the flood was only regional (and usually the Ark was a huge raft).
FYI – there WERE massive REGIONAL floods millenia ago. You might want to watch Bob Ballard’s video on the Black Sea and the discoveries he made there. It gives one reasonable explanation for the Flood narrative (the Biblical one is the least accurate).
“Noah” could have happened anywhere from around 6,000 years ago back to the end of the last ice age. My ancestors were on this continent long before then, and we can prove that H. sapiens sapiens diverged from Africa more than 50,000 years ago (and that our race – different from H. sapiens neandertal – to which it’s now proved that we interbred – evolved about 170,000 years ago).
Your blind ignorance is showing.

The color of the man’s skin has no bearing on my decision as an individual to want my state to leave the union. The fact that his views on the majority of key issues is completely opposite of mine is what makes me not want him as a leader. There are a lot of things about the Republican party that I don’t agree with either, so don’t try to make it out like I’m looking at it with a biased perspective. If you’re happy with more government intrusion and unconstitutional laws being passed constantly, then good for you. And if so where is the problem? The right of self-determination applies to every nation, every people, every ethnic or religious group.
It seems that coloured people in the US cannot stand the thought of being for themselves in their state, but have to follow the whites around everywhere.
And before you ask, it does not need a 100% white state. Croatia, to pick but one example, became a sovereign state with a 25% minority of Serbs. Bosnia became a sovereign with the constituting people not even making up the majority. And both were recognized by the US herself. So, clearly, by international standards US states also have the right to become independent if their societies choose so.
I am btw not an American, just following the debate, and following a bit how the whites react to their obvious dispossession.

That’s about the most racist statement I’ve seen in a while.
First, there is no “dependent class”, and believe it or not, most of the people on public assistance really don’t have a choice (unless you consider death or homelessness followed by a slow death of starvation a choice). Yeah, you’d probably tell old people that if they aren’t paying taxes and supporting the system (I wonder how much YOU get out of the system), that they should drop dead. (I’ve heard “Good Christians” and “Staunch Conservatives” say that.) Of course, that wouldn’t apply to your parents if they’re still alive. Only to everyone else.
The greed and self-centeredness of people like you disgusts me. You want to know the really sad thing? Not that much of the help to your “dependent class” comes out of your pocket. Most of the money coming out of your pocket goes to big corporations in the form of subsidies and “corporate welfare” or supporting a military that has become so powerful that it’s a threat to world peace.
A good amount out of your pocket now is paying for a war that was started on lies and to gain access to cheap oil and for ‘foreign investment’.

It’s really mind-boggling how ignorant a sizeable number of Americans are about welfare. The monetary amount expended for the poor is miniscule compared to the gargantuan amounts of corporate welfare in this country. Yet, there are those who strain at the gnat which is the small amount for the poor but swallow whole the camel which is the huge corporate welfare in this country. Plus, most of the recipients of the welfare they are against are white folks. As for those who want to secede, there are folks in blue states as well as red states who feel that way. I seriously doubt that anyone who wants to secede voted for President Obama in the first place regardless of the state they live in. So, my bet is that only a relatively small percentage of people in any of these states want to secede. I say, let them go and either form their own government which doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in a fire, or go to whatever country will have them. It’s ironic that most countries think that Romney and his supporters are morons, anyway. In either case, they should just leave the land they are living on, and if they want to come back, they should face more draconian hurdles than people who want to come from other countries.

Point out one racist comment I made. I see the dependent class everyday with my own 2 eyes. Like I said there are people that legitimately can not support them self and then there are people that take advantage of every free handout they can get, even though they are just as able bodied as I am and should be working to support them self. I receive zero government benefits, and have never received any in my adult life. And thank you for pointing out a few of the many other reasons why I think Texas should leave this nation.
