President Obama has so convincingly won the message war on taxes that according to new Bloomberg poll, nearly half of Republicans support raising taxes on the wealthy.
The Bloomberg poll found that Obama’s job approval rating (53%) is now at its highest level since December 2009. Two to one majorities support the president’s position on protecting Medicare and Social Security. This result pretty much obliterates the Republican talking point that the Romney/Ryan campaign gave Republicans some sort of victory on entitlements.
The biggest surprise in this poll was that despite two years of endless campaigning for not raising taxes on the wealthy, nearly half of Republicans support the president’s position that taxes need to be raised on the wealthy.
President Obama has been delivering the simple, clear, and consistent message that the top earners are paying too little in taxes. Mitt Romney tried to campaign on protecting the “job creators,” and was routed. John Boehner did more damage to his own party yesterday by again refusing to raise taxes on the rich.
Obama has so thoroughly won the message war on taxes that if this fiscal cliff dispute lingers for a few more weeks, he might even have a majority of Republicans on his side.
The Bloomberg poll raises the question exactly who are the congressional Republicans representing with their position on taxes? They aren’t representing the majority of the American people. They aren’t representing small business owners as they like to claim. It seems that the only people they are representing are conservative millionaires and billionaires and right wing tax zealots like Grover Norquist.
For decades, Democrats have treated taxes like a Republican issue that they should never discuss.
President Obama has done something really phenomenal. He has not only beaten Republicans on their own issue, but he has made taxes a Democratic issue.
When Obama gets his tax increase on the rich, it will be another in a string of political victories for a president that is dealing with the most dysfunctional congress ever.
President Obama is accomplishing something pretty incredible that if not appreciated in the present, will be admired in the future.

Meanwhile, the latest ‘cliff’ offer by the GOP is to permanently extend the tax cuts for the wealthy: http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/12/12/1323671/republicans-insist-that-bush-tax-cuts-for-wealthiest-americans-be-made-permanent-reports-say/

The strangest thing about this move, JJM, is that Boehner and Cantor will stand in front of the first available camera and deny that the GOP is the party of the rich. Ed shared some poll results on his program tonight, and poll participants had no kind words for the republicans but felt that it was the democrats who stood up for the middle class. Republicans now have a 30% approval rating, and it seems as if Boehner is determined to drive it even lower.

That must be some of that “hypnosis” in action — the same hypnosis the rightwingnut radio noisemakers claim President Obama uses to get blacks and women to blindly support him.
Guess they’re not immune, either . . .

Well I have been emailing my Republican Congressman, Pete Sessions, every other day letting him know that I would be watching his voting record. As President Obama won and not Mitt Romney, the mandate was to tax the 1%.
He actually emailed me a response how there were circumstances that I may not understand. That to raise the taxes on the 1% would mean jobs not being created.
I responded with they should have banked a lot of money since the higher tax rates of the Clinton Administration. And we were not seeing record job creation to match the record lows on the tax rates, and that jobs created in China or India could not be counted.
I told him the tax rates needed to return to Clinton era rates. That social security, medicare, medicaid, and unemployment were not the entitlements to be cut at this time. Unemployment was a result of jobs being off-shored.
I told him also that cuts I expected to see were in Congressional staffing, and travel should be coach not first class. Exploratory trips outside the US should be eliminated. That companies performed these cuts when the economy was bad, Congress should follow that example.
I told him in addition to the increased tax rates on the privileged 1%, that the loop holes should be closed. Loop holes were an example of poor writing or worse deceptive writing to create the loopholes. Also, since during this election our churches decided to flaunt the law and campaign from the pulpit for specific candidates, they should repeal the tax exemption on churches with a 10% tax on churches.
I did not get a response on that one.

As for the republicans, I don;t see where they have done one thing to help the poor, unemployment, jobs, and they certainly arn’t willing to work for the people of the country. I don;t see why any one would vote for a republican.. All they think about is their
money. When their house keeper, secretarys all pay more taxes and it is ok with them??. They all need to be voted out.
