In a recent interview with The New Republic, President Obama told the magazine that he goes skeet shooting at Camp David. Conservatives naturally don’t believe the President, because we all know that Kenyans don’t skeet shoot.
So the White House just released this picture of President Barack Obama skeet shooting at Camp David. When skeet shooting, a person uses a shot gun in an attempt to break clay disks that are flung into the air. Yes, it’s not violent in the sense that it does not harm a living thing, and thus may not count in conservatives’ mind — but remember, they need their guns for “sporting” and this president does not get it because he also uses a gun for sporting activities.

This picture was released today and the President is heading to Minnesota to discuss gun control. You can see where Obama’s going with this. And no, conservatives won’t win by trying to paint Obama as coming for their guns, but that doesn’t stop them from trying.
I’ve been increasingly perplexed at the number of conservatives who post on Facebook that “the government” (aka: Obama is coming for my guns!) doesn’t know about their guns, so they can’t take them away. One such conservative (who has several kids living at home) then proceeded to detail where the 90 guns (a real story) are located in his home, and which ones are loaded (under the bed!)– only proving that conservatives don’t understand the Patriot Act they love so much and also, some people should not be allowed to have loaded weapons in their home.
Too dumb to know better than to tell all of your kids’ friends where your loaded weapons are? You’re too dumb to have one.
I doubt you can count fast enough to start the countdown to the conservative conspiracy theories about this photo, but I’ll start if off with the predictable accusations: That’s not a real gun, that’s not real smoke, that’s not the President, that gun has no birth certificate, skeet can’t vote, ACORN!… Your turn.

Palin champions will hold up last night’s “Sarah Palin’s America” episode as proof of the candidate putting her money where her moose is. That is to say, after years of talking about being a hunter, Palin actually went out and shot something.
In this most recent episode, a woman who has blindly championed the NRA and legitimized her frontier-woman status by claiming to be a “lifelong hunter” comes across as anything but.
For starters, Palin and pa head out on a long hunt without bothering to sight in Palin’s rifle, a mistake no serious hunter would ever make.
From there, numerous bungles along the way to finally downing the caribou show a hunting tourist who, at worst, appears to pose a genuine danger to fellow outdoorsmen.
While Palin’s hunting-for-TV jamboree certainly impressed the hockey moms, it seriously eroded her base of genuine hunters. One online commentor, on Sean Hannity’s website no less, grumbled, “I turned on Sarah Palin’s Alaska a minute ago and she just shot four maybe even five times at a caribou and missed. Needless to say I’m not impressed with her ability to handle a firearm let alone aim it and hit something.”
On Palin’s own Facebook page, a viewer wrote, “What a joke. I was a fan before the show. No one who is a true hunter lets others carry their rifle or can’t load their own shells. Sarah, you are a phony in this area of your ‘skills.”
Several others wondered why Palin, an experienced hunter, didn’t bring her own rifle, pointing out that familiarity with one’s weapon is a core principle of hunting.

Here are some clarifications and a photo critique from an actual, experienced skeet shooter.
1. It’s an over/under shotgun, not a semi-automatic. The one feature it shares with a semi-auto is that it fires once with each pull of the trigger. The O/U is limited to 2 shots, a semi-auto is ‘tube-fed’ and may contain several more, depending on the particular maker.
2. Ok, it’s a double-barrel, but in common usage, the term double-barrel refers to shotguns with barrels arranged side-by-side, not over/under. Granted, that distinction may be colloquial.
3. The orange tip? That’s not orange, that’s brass-colored, and it’s on an extended choke tube. I would expect both barrels to have one, but that’s not necessarily the case.
4. Gas coming from the side of the barrel? Those are “ports”, created to direct gas up and away, thus directing the barrel down, making it easier to maintain one’s aim to fire the second shot. In skeet, we fire ‘doubles’, meaning two targets are thrown at once, so the second shot must be fired quickly.
5. The aforementioned gas ports are nothing more than holes, machined into the barrel. They are in rows along each side of the ventilated rib. From the shooter’s perspective, they are located at 11 o’clock and 1 o’clock. In fact, if you look closely at the picture, you can see the 11 o’clock holes on both barrels.
6. Modern gunpowder is smokeless.
There are problems with this picture.
First, in 30+ years of skeet shooting, I’ve never seen that much smoke.
Second, if you COULD see the smoke coming from the ports, it wouldn’t be a little wisp, it would be straight-line, get-outta-my-way, 1000-feet per second jets. If the shells being used are full-strength target loads, there should be a little fire.
Third, and most telling, there should also be gases escaping from the 11 o’clock ports, not just the 1 o’clock ports.
The picture has been faked. I won’t speculate as to a reason.

Lols, really? I don’t see an orange tip, I see the “business end,” of a shotgun. Additionally, it doesn’t look like he is shooting, it looks like he just shot, higher in the air, and has arrested the recoil with his body, holding the gun steady after just firing. This is supported by the smoke leaving the tube. Compressed gases leave the tube for a period of time after the shot leaves the tube, not just when the shot leaves. I can’t imagine photoshopping this image would provide any benefits at all, if the WH wants to release an image of the President shooting, all the have to do is hand him a gun and take a picture, no Photoshop required, which is, I’m sure, what happened. Any arguments to the contrary are absurd.

This article is ludacris. Not once does it give a response that those garsh darn conservatives actually made. This article is worse than calling the kettle black, it’s calling the kettle racist and stupid.
I’ll break it down point by point.
How is this a punch in the mouth? I’m sure the NRA love seeing him shoot. It means that he’s a gun supporter in that he uses them for fun and not just for hunting. He’s using a gun for entertainment. What’s wrong with that?
