As the sequester looms, Americans should remember something about the party of “fiscal responsibility”. Republicans were allegedly so concerned over spending that they refused to raise our debt ceiling, and yet at the same time, they also frivolously wasted 18.9 billion taxpayer dollars playing debt ceiling games.
The Bipartisan Policy Center, founded in 2007 by former Senate Majority Leaders Howard Baker, Tom Daschle, Bob Dole and George Mitchell, did an analysis of the risks and costs of the debt ceiling standoff. They reported, “The United States hit its debt limit on December 31, 2012. The Treasury Secretary then began tapping into roughly $200 billion of emergency borrowing authority – referred to as “extraordinary measures” – to allow for an additional period of fully-funded government operations.”
“Estimate of the ten-year cost to taxpayers of the 2011 debt limit standoff = $18.9 billion.”
Steve Bell, a former GOP Senate aide who co-authored the analysis for the Bipartisan Policy Center said, “This is what they wasted last year.” Yes, that’s what Republicans wasted over their debt ceiling standoff alone, not including the money they wasted showboating repeal ObamaCare votes.
Read the analysis here:
A few snippets:
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a report detailing additional costs to taxpayers as a result of the delayed 2011 debt limit increase.
‒A substantial cost to taxpayers stemmed from elevated interest rates on U.S. Securities issued in 2011 prior to when the debt limit was increased in August.
‒GAO conducted an economic analysis to estimate the resulting change in interest rates. For Fiscal Year 2011, GAO estimated additional interest costs to taxpayers of $1.3 billion.
The cost of the event to the federal government, however, continues to accrue because many of the bonds issued during that period remain outstanding.
‒BPC extended GAO’s methodology to analyze the long term cost to taxpayers stemming from the elevated interest rates.
‒Estimate of the ten-year cost to taxpayers of the 2011 debt limit standoff = $18.9 billion
To put this in perspective, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that the “Doc Fix” to prevent the scheduled 27% cut to Medicare physician payments for 2012 cost $18 billion over ten years.
Instead of chasing John Boehner’s blame game over the sequester, we should be discussing the fact that Republicans wasted $18.9 billion over the next 10 years through their debt ceiling obstruction alone. How do they explain the disparity between their casual abuse of taxpayer money and their claims that we have a spending problem?
I’m waiting for just one of the Sunday shows to address this obscene waste of taxpayer money in the middle of a recession, but it seems they are very busy following Republican distractions down the faux outrage path over the deficit. Meanwhile, “the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that the “Doc Fix” to prevent the scheduled 27% cut to Medicare physician payments for 2012 cost $18 billion over ten years.”
So, the very spending that Republicans are pretending to be so upset about when it’s spent on the American people’s health is of no concern when they waste it playing Debt Ceiling Drama for a willing press.
This suggests that Republicans don’t really believe there’s a spending problem. Republicans are looking like Scroogian misers, wasting the taxpayers’ money on partisan games.

They don’t care about health, education or the welfare of the people. And since we spend far MORE when they in charge (and even when they are not, it seems) they are also not the least bit concerned about the debt. It’s almost as if Rove polls a bunch of Heritage Foundation and Newsmax subscribers to find out what word scares them the most, and then they run with that. These ‘scared rabbits’ do not bother to do any research, they just wallow in the fear, buying guns and ammo (which translates to more GOP money) and railing against ‘government and the Kenyan commie socialist in DC!’ while collecting their SS and using their Medicare for their health needs. The rest of us, as always, are stupid and can go straight to hell. Someone besides Rachel needs to start calling them out for their lies, their wasteful spending and for taking advantage of the low IQ folks down south.

Yes, I know, education standards vary widely from state to state (which is pretty stupid in itself, but that’s a different discussion) with only three states -Massachusetts, South Carolina, and Missouri-from what I can see, having set world-class standards for their students. And there are states in the north that are not exactly the models for education. But that’s not exactly much of an indicator anyway. Showing a high degree of proficiency in reading or math doesn’t exactly equate to becoming an informed voter. And there is an EXORBITANT amount of transplants in the south as well. So I’m still suspect of anyone who claims the south is disproportionately “stupid”. I see it as a bias, just as much as any other.

Wanted to take the time, beyond liking, to express how much I enjoyed your comment. We can only hope that as more more people wake up and start conversing with others about what is happening, we the people will find our voice and take back our government from corporate dollar(we have done this twice before in our history)

Both the govt and economy are broken and 1 can’t be fixed w/o the other. I think you need to work on the govt side 1st because as long as these self interested fossils and ignorant kids are lookiing out for themselves and not the public the budget will never get fixed. A good start would be public financing for elections, term limits, line item veto, return to the original filibuster, eliminate or severly cut benifits package. return congress to what it was intended to be-public service, not a career. get elected, do your time then go back to your ‘regular’ life. go to ‘public vote’ elections-we count em, might as well use em. and make these politicians more accountable to the public along the lines of recall/confidance votes-make it easier to get rid of the useless ones-and i mean this for all of them, not just one party or the other-both have their good and useless members.

One constant fact about the Republicans that always jumps out is that their reputation for fiscal responsibility is a huge myth. They totally deserve the basement-level approval ratings they have consistently gotten over the last 4 years. I have never seen such an inept, unproductive, spiteful group of politicians concentrated in one political body, namely Congress. They cannot be gone soon enough, with the negativity and uselessness that have led them to throw numerous Americans under the bus in the name of hyperpartisanship.

Why should the gop care about wasting the little people’s money? Afterall they are rich and want more of our tax money through tax breaks and loopholes.
Wasting our time and money is what they do best.

Yep. Let’s examine the fiscal conservatives’ logic with respect to the debt ceiling:
The main objective of the intransigent Republican members of Congress is — allegedly — to curb wasteful government spending.
So to meet that objective, they are threatening a repeat of last year’s debt ceiling blockade which resulted in the U.S. being unable to pay its bills for the first time ever, thereby causing the nation’s credit rating to take a major hit, which in turn led to higher interest rates for government borrowing, and finally, billions of dollars wasted as a result.

As President Clinton stated, it’s all about math. Delayed Social Security checks may force people to use food banks or hope the landlord understands the proberm is with the GOP., Maybe we need to provide them with calculators ,made in China, of course. Then we don’t have to worry about inaccuracies.

The GOP does not use logic in their attacks, they use ignorance and hatred instead. Obama uses logic in his responses to those attacks, and it drives them crazy, literally. When you see Boehner crying, you can be sure it is not over we the people, although he invokes us in every statement, no, he is crying at the thought of losing what he values most, money.God forbid any of that precious precious money be used to give back to we the people upon whose backs that money comes from. No, that money, it’s his baby, and he loves it, as do most of the GOP.
