A weird special election in South Carolina keeps getting even stranger as Larry Flynt has endorsed Republican Mark Sanford for the House, and made a $2,600 donation to his campaign.

In a statement Flynt said, “No one has done more to expose the sexual hypocrisy of traditional values in America today. Sanford’s open embrace of his mistress in the name of love, breaking his sacred marriage vows, was an act of bravery that has drawn my support.” Chastising the Republican Party for not backing Sanford following his run-off victory, Flynt declared: “I am willing to step in and stand erect for Mark Sanford.”

He added, “My endorsement has not been an easy decision for me. Even though Mark Sanford has emerged as the leader against sexual hypocrisy in American politics, he is a liar. He lied to his gubernatorial staff. He lied to his wife. He lied to his children. He lied to the people of South Carolina and to the press. Despite his journey down this Appalachian Trail of deceit, I support him not for his character, but for exposing the hypocrisy of traditional values. The liar has exposed the greater lie.” Flynt also commended Sanford’s supporters for “tossing aside lifelong convictions” and “teaching their children the invaluable lesson that traditional values are nothing more than a scam.”

This was pure sarcasm, as the bizarre South Carolina House special election keeps getting weirder by the day. Flynt’s “endorsement” is designed to sink Sanford. Former Gov. Sanford is a hypocrite of the highest degree, who had the nerve to stand by his votes against marriage, and to impeach Bill Clinton during his debate with Elizabeth Colbert Busch. Sanford is still trying to sell the family values line despite fleeing the country on the state dime to meet up with his mistress.

Sanford’s candidacy has been a train wreck of epic proportions. His campaign has brought back memories of those heady days when Christine O’Donnell tried to get elected to U.S. Senate by telling everyone that she was not a witch.

The Republican Party continues to end up with really lousy candidates, who voters in even heavily Republican districts have issues with. Sanford has so far debated a cardboard cutout of Nancy Pelosi, found out that he will have to go to court for trespassing on his ex-wife’s property, ran a campaign against Nancy Pelosi even though she is no longer the speaker of the House, and his campaign signs may or may not resemble the Argentine flag.

Sanford’s campaign is pretty much broke, so it will be interesting to see if he will keep Flynt’s check. Mark Sanford may be the only family values Republican who is picking up campaign contributions and endorsements for his own lack of family values.
