House Republicans continued to blaze a path for their party to lose the 2016 election by passing a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks.
Republicans tried to soften Rep. Trent Franks’ bill by quietly adding an exception in case of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother, but this bill was clearly designed as a play to their anti-choice base. The bill really is a self inflicted wound, and a thumb in the eye the millions of women who supported President Obama in 2012.
The final vote was 228-196 with 6 Republicans voting no, and 6 Democrats voting yes.
Instead of reaching out to pro-choice women voters, House Republicans chose to antagonize them. So far, Republicans have ignored the advice of their own rebrand by voting to raise interest rates on student loans, threatening to kill immigration reform, and passing a federal abortion ban. In three simple steps, House Republicans have managed to alienate key parts of the constituency that has powered Barack Obama to two presidential election victories.
These votes are also paving the path for Hillary Clinton to win the White House in 2016. Republicans keep blaming the candidate at the top of the ticket, when the real problem is that the right wing zealots in the House are destroying the party’s brand. House Republicans have placed their party on a path to hand the 2016 election to Hillary Clinton.
By continuing to be anti-young person, anti-immigrant, and anti-women, the GOP is setting up a scenario where all Hillary Clinton, or any other Democrat will have to do is hold the Obama coalition together, and they will win. The great irony is that the glue that’s binding these people together is the actions of the Republican Party.
The House Republicans delivered the message to women that in their America, conservative men control their bodies. This message always plays well with the GOP rank and file, but it is absolute political suicide for future elections.
Today’s vote was an obvious political move to fire up the Republican base ahead of 2014, but that motivation could cut both ways. For men and women who truly care about liberty, and don’t want big government conservatism making our medical decisions for us, this vote should serve as motivation to get to the polls in 2014. House Republicans are setting the table for Hillary Clinton in 2016, but the message can be sent in 2014 that this sort of blatant contempt for women will not go unpunished.

Well one republican gave his reason for his vote
Texas Congressman: Masturbating Fetuses Prove Need for Abortion Ban

I guess that answers my question on self awareness

Mimosas, a beautiful, delicate fern like plant, will recoil when touched. Fetuses like paramecium, will recoil when the pressure around them is altered as in an amniocentesis. That does not imply sensation at all.
The faux Christians who think this proves anything about life miss their own best point – because the vast majority of pregnancies end in SPONTANEOUS miscarriage at very early stages, that MAY (if they were carrying this out logically) be why the spinal nerves and brain stem do not fuse until viability.
From their OWN view, that’s God’s protection of the fetus from pain during any miscarriage when the contractions crush and dismember the very small fetus.
Why they don’t even think about this when they are so sure God makes everything happen just mystifies me.

Thanks for the info, CL, my daughter had a miscarriage in January of this year. The father, my daughter, and I experienced the most pain. We were all devastated. Many of those who speak on women’s issues don’t know what they’re talking about. They take a meme and run with it, supporting it with flawed science, and oftentimes, no science, only their personal religious beliefs. This is supported by the number of RW-dominated legislatures which are now making a miscarriage a criminal act. Many of the men writing and passing these laws have wives, daughters, and other female relatives. If they think none of them will ever consider abortion as an option, they’re stupider and more close-minded than we think they are. Marsha Blackburn should have been ashamed of herself to put her stamp of approval on this bill and go in front of cameras to support it. Republicans know they’ve messed up because they have Trent Franks hiding in the background and a woman doing the talking.

Listen youngster’s….
Way back in the 60′s when abortion was illegal, only wealthy woman/girls could afford to go off-shore for a secret abortion…sadly, the rest of American females had to resort to dirty back alleys. That’s why wealthy GOP woman (not religious crazies) know these potentials laws will never pertain to them nor their daughters.
I tell my sons all the time…’Don’t let them outlaw abortion or slippery slopes, abortion has been going on for centuries, it’s a womans body and a woman’s choice’.
No American Taliban!
Teach your children/grandchildren well!

If it disagrees with what they think, it’s unconstitutional. It has nothing to do with what is in the actual U.S. Constitution. I went on some blogs today, and now some conservatives are calling the Supreme Court’s decision in the AZ voter ID law as a “liberal” decision. It’s not a “liberal” decision when three conservative SC justices voted to strike down the law. Their only problem with this is that the SC didn’t reach the decision they were expecting. When the SC rules against what liberals want, we tend to take it in stride and try to think of a way to change they law. Many conservatives tend to demonize the SC and begin calling them traitors to conservatism. What they don’t seem to understand is that the SC’s major obligation is not to liberals or conservatives but to follow the law. Our court system should never be partisan, but it seems to be that this is what many conservatives want. Shame on them. This is not how the founders wanted our court system to operate.

These bastards are going to rue the day they waged war on the women in this country. They want to shackle women and take away our right to determine our own destiny. If they cared for life, they would care for the children that are already here. Instead, they reduce the assistance parents need to feed their children; they cut education funding; they cut Head Start; all they do is cut, cut, cut. And then they have the audacity to say they care for life. The only life they care about is their own; they couldn’t give a damn about anyone else.
They want women barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, preferably making sandwiches for her man, and hey, if she has a bunch of kids already that she can’t feed, let’s make her have some more and while we’re at it, let’s not create any jobs so her husband can go back to work and earn a living wage, and let’s be sure to cut school funding for her kids, and we may as well make it impossible for those kids to go to college.
Bastards.

Even some republican members of the House think this latest attempt to restrict abortion rights is stupid:
“This week, moderate Republican congressman Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania expressed exasperation with the House leadership’s decision to bring to the floor a bill a federal ban on abortions 20 weeks after conception: “I’ll be very frank: I discouraged our leadership from bringing this to a vote on the floor…Clearly the economy is on everyone’s minds, we’re seeing very stagnant job numbers, confidence in the institution of government is eroding and now we’re going to have a debate on rape and abortion. The stupidity is simply staggering.”
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/06/18/republicans-latest-abortion-ban-is-staggeringly-stupid/
Republicans in Congress have earned both their 10% approval rating and their rating indicating that 65% of us think they’re out of touch with mainstream America.

The repugs are once again putting on a show to pump up the ignorant haters. Sadly they are so ignorant that they actually believe the pigs care about abortion. It is about power and control. The pigs want to force women back to the kitchen to be baby machines. They believe it will stop the angry white people from soon becoming minorities.

Seriously, repubs. is not the real problem, it’s ourselves (dems., emprogs., indep., libs.) that are the real problem… When let the repubs. and the media dictate/control the narratives (IRS, NSA, Benghazi, Rosen, AP) w/ fake scandals..
But in the meantime, congress blocked $60B jobs Bill, state & local govts. enacted illegal laws that killing workers, poor, immigration, women rights.. And the MSM is help covering-up these injustices. Keeping the courts pack w/ repubs., therefore, PBO can’t get his nomination appointed. Dems. in the senate/House are quiet scare to stand-up to the repubs., to take bold stands (like rep. Cummings)…
Ques: When are the people who work hard to put dems. in ofc. in 2012, going to stand-up to our fringes & say, “yes, their some problems with these programs, but they are not new, yes, we can protect our liberties, but not throw the babe out with the bath water? Stop with drama and start with solutions?

These problems been in existence for decades and we are going to have this Pres. for only 3 1/2 more yrs.. And the urgency to correct these probs. is foremost.. I applaud, sen. Franken, Feinstein, Chambliss who defend their position not the ones screaming injustice, when they ALL voted for these programs. or let the minority/dingbats control our agenda & a media rollover/bend-over to follow faux & repubs.
THANKS, to blogs like this for speaking facts & truth to insanity, lies, & propaganda to insight fear, mistrust in your judgement, on who we choose to represent our interest.. To stop you from voting or being engage with our govt…
Bottomline, don’t let GG/Snowden, phony scandals keep distract you.. Keep eye on our objectives.. Learn from history, not relive it.. This is the same thing opponents did in the civil rights movement, union movement, etc… Divide & conquer..

What we need are more dedicated/enthusiastic young people to run for office! Get your foot in the door any way you can…run for Dog-Catcher first and learn the ropes.
If only we could harness our American Youth to become more involved in changing the direction of our country…we would see things change dramatically! I’ve said before, the Dems should start an out-reach to our younger generation:
“America needs your trajectory now to help us lead our nation into a better, brighter future!”
