President Obama delivered a dose of truth when he addressed House Democrats today. The president told Nancy Pelosi and company, “when you guys are unified, you guys stick together, this country is better off.”
PRESIDENT OBAMA: And I was just talking to Nancy before I came out here. The fact that we are no longer going to see, I believe, anybody try to hold our government hostage and threaten the full faith and credit of the United States of America in order to contract policy concessions, the fact that we were able to pass a clean debt limit is just one example of why when you guys are unified, you guys stick together, this country is better off. And I could not be more thankful and more appreciative and prouder of what you’re doing. (Applause.)
Just a couple of more points. Number one, you’ve seen reports over the last couple of days that we actually slightly exceeded our targets for ACA signups and enrollments this past month, in the month of January. (Applause.) We now have well over 3.5 million people who have signed up and are getting insurance through the marketplaces for the first time. That does not count the close to 7 million folks who have signed up for Medicaid because of the law that you passed, or the 3 million young people who are staying on their parents’ plans. We’re starting to see data already that the uninsured rate is coming down. We are going to keep on pushing on this to make sure that here in America, everybody can enjoy the kind of financial security and peace of mind that good quality health insurance provides. (Applause.)
And I just want to say thank you for all of you hanging in there tough on an issue that I think 10 years from now, five years from now, we’re going to look back and say this was a monumental achievement that could not have happened had it not been for this caucus.
President Obama was right on all counts. A fractured Democratic Party would be bad for the country because Democrats are the only people who are standing up for what the majority of Americans want their government to be doing. The dysfunction within the Republican Party means that there is only one functional political party right now.
Speaker of the House John Boehner brought a clean debt ceiling bill to the House floor because Republicans could not agree on what should be in their proposal. The GOP is so fragmented that it has been paralyzed into a state of inaction. It is impossible for the two parties to discuss the issues, when one party can not agree with itself on what their position should be.
There is no doubt that the Democratic Party is united. Months ago, the media attempted to use the ACA website to paint a picture of division within the party, but this was never accurate or true. Concern about the way things were going was not the same as division. Democrats do have issues that they are divided on. Chained CPI is one. The TPP trade agreement is another, but Democrats agree on the big picture goals.
History has shown that when the Democratic Party is divided, the poor and middle class lose. Social Security, Medicare, and the ACA (Obamacare) are things that Democrats should be proud of. They are also things that were passed to that benefit millions of people without the help of Republicans.
The GOP has sold itself completely out to right wing billionaires and corporations. The American people are not only better when the Democratic Party is unified. The Democratic Party is the last line of defense that is preventing right wing billionaires and corporations from taking over the federal government.
America needs two strong parties, but until Republicans get their act together, the heavy lifting of doing the right thing for the country will be on Democratic shoulders alone.
