It’s nice to know Republicans are so patriotic, you know, like Maryland Republican Michael Peroutka, who happens to be a buddy of Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, and who is running for a seat on the Anne Arundel, Maryland, county council.
Peroutka, who Baltimore City Paper rightly calls “an extremist dressed up for mainstream appeal,” spoke at the 2012 conference of the League of the South, a secessionist organization. We have Warren Throckmorton to thank for finding the video. In it, Peroutka asserts that the South may need to secede again and bring about the “destruction of the current regime,” as he put it.
That would be the legally established federal government. The entity that beat down the rebellious South last time.

Peroutka told his fellow secessionists,
I don’t disagree with Dr. Hill [League of the South president] at all that this regime is beyond reform, and I think that’s an obvious fact, and I agree with him. However, I agree that when you secede, or however the destruction of the rubble of this regime takes place and how it plays out, you’re going to need to take a biblical world view, and apply it to civil law and government. That’s what you’re still going to need to do. We’re going to have to have this foundational information in the hearts and minds of the people or else liberty won’t survive the secession either. You see what I’m saying? I’m saying that because I don’t want people from League of the South that for one minute that I am about reforming the current regime, and that studying the Constitution is about reforming the current regime. I, like many of you, and like Patrick Henry, probably have come to the conclusion that we smelled a rat from the beginning.
If that wasn’t enough, he then asked the crowd “stand for the national anthem.” And no, he did not mean the Star Spangled Banner. He meant “Dixie.”
You kinda get the idea that Peroutka and his friends haven’t gotten over Lincoln freeing their slaves.
To be clear, this speech was before Peroutka, who is the co-founder of the Institute on the Constitution (IOTC) in Pasadena, Maryland, actually joined the League’s board, in 2013 and pledged his undying support for their anti-American cause.
For the record, the League of the South is labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
According to the SPLC:
The League of the South is a neo-Confederate group that advocates for a second Southern secession and a society dominated by “European Americans.” The league believes the “godly” nation it wants to form should be run by an “Anglo-Celtic” (read: white) elite that would establish a Christian theocratic state and politically dominate blacks and other minorities. Originally founded by a group that included many Southern university professors, the group lost its Ph.D.s as it became more explicitly racist. The league denounces the federal government and northern and coastal states as part of “the Empire,” a materialist and anti-religious society.
And the League of the South is not shy about its goals:
On Monday, 17 February, The League of the South unveiled a billboard at Apalachee Parkway and Goodbody Drive in Tallahassee, Florida. The League’s message is simple: “Secede.”
What does The League mean? Again, it’s simple really. If the South is going to survive, especially against a flood tide of massive Third World immigration and leftist attempts to destroy her very cultural and political foundations, she is going to have to seek her independence and govern herself.
Not only does Peroutka want to secede, but he is concerned, he says, that the “biblical view” of government both he and Roy Moore share, should “survive the secession.”
Why would it not? All the intelligent, educated – not to say patriotic – people would be already living north of the Mason-Dixon line or fleeing there for safety. There would be nothing preventing a dumbing down of the South.
Will he win?
Baltimore City Paper reports,
Anne Arundel County’s Fifth Councilmanic District is the whitest, most educated, and richest of the county’s seven districts, and its voters lean heavily in favor of Republicans. If that pattern holds true in November’s general election for the council seat, the district’s 75,000 residents — 87 percent white, 97 percent with a high-school diploma, and about half with a college degree or higher, and with a median household income of $111,000, higher than any Maryland county — will be turning for constituent services and leadership on local issues to the GOP candidate, Michael Peroutka.
It would seem he has a pretty good chance of portraying himself as the savior of this white enclave. As City Paper goes on to tell us,
Even if he loses the council race to Democratic contender Patrick Armstrong, Peroutka still won an elected position in the June 24 primary election: he’s now a member of the Republican State Central Committee in his district, making him a leader of the local GOP faithful — whether they like it or not.
When Peroutka ran for president in 2004 on the Constitution Party ticket, Human Rights Campaign (HRC) reminds us that he wrote on his blog that “I am proud to be a member of the League of the South. I look forward to receiving the support … from guys with Confederate flags in their trucks.”
Yes, nothing like Republican patriotism. Half of them want to dismantle the federal government from within and return us to the Articles of Confederation, and the rest just want to secede. Take your pick of poison.
You begin to wonder if Reconstruction was such a good idea, that perhaps General Sherman was not thorough enough. After World War II we had de-Nazification. Too bad there was nothing like it for secessionists in 1865. Or, for that matter, in 2014.
