Donald Trump has explicitly threatened to run as an Independent if the Republican Party isn’t “fair” to him. Polling has shown that a Trump third party candidacy would result in a landslide victory for Democrats.

The Hill reported:

“The RNC has not been supportive. They were always supportive when I was a contributor. I was their fair-haired boy,” the business mogul told The Hill in a 40-minute interview from his Manhattan office at Trump Tower on Wednesday. “The RNC has been, I think, very foolish.”

Pressed on whether he would run as a third-party candidate if he fails to clinch the GOP nomination, Trump said that “so many people want me to, if I don’t win.”

“I’ll have to see how I’m being treated by the Republicans,” Trump said. “Absolutely, if they’re not fair, that would be a factor.”

…..

“I’m not in the gang. I’m not in the group where the group does whatever it’s supposed to do,” he said. “I want to do what’s right for the country — not what’s good for special interest groups that contribute, not what’s good for the lobbyists and the donors.”

Trump confirmed that he views himself someone who was loved by Republicans when he was writing checks, but now he views the party as being unfair to him. Here is a sentence that you won’t read every day. Donald Trump’s point of view makes sense. The Republican Party embraced his racist birther attacks on President Obama. The Republican Party elevated him from reality television star to political commentator.

In Donald Trump’s mind, he is doing nothing different than he did before.

The consequences of a Trump third party run were made clear in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll. If Donald Trump runs as an Independent, Democrats will win the 2016 presidential election by double digits. Trump would also place the Republican Senate majority in jeopardy, and might cost the party a few House seats as well.

Republicans have two options. Either they can leave Trump alone and let him destroy the party as a Republican candidate, or they can attack Trump and set the stage for him to ruin their odds of winning the White House as an Independent.

Either way, it looks like Democrats have been given a gift named Donald Trump.
