Ted Cruz Launches Crusade to Defund Planned Parenthood in All 50 States

Ted Cruz is not a man who is going to be out-crazied by Donald Trump. No indeed. David Lane’s American Renewal Project website, and yes, it’s another on the endless theme of “making America great again,” tells us that,

Sen. Ted Cruz, who has assiduously courted evangelicals throughout his presidential run, will take a lead role in the launch this week of an ambitious 50-state campaign to end taxpayer support for Planned Parenthood — a move that is likely to give the GOP candidate a major primary-season boost in the fierce battle for social-conservative and evangelical voters.

What this really means is that David Lane – the Martin Bormann of the Religious Right – is placing all his hopes not on Donald Trump’s “little wine and little cracker,” but on Ted Cruz’s self-proclaimed messiahship.

Trump claims now that he is “pro-life” and it is true that many Evangelicals have warmed toward him, but Cruz is the guy saying,

“Nothing is more important in the next 18 months than that the body of Christ rise up and that Christians stand up, that pastors stand up and lead.”

That isn’t quite what Cruz means, of course. Where he wants them to lead is a crusade ostensibly against Planned Parenthood but with a real goal of getting one Ted Cruz into the White House.

As we are told by Dawn Leguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, “This is just his way to try and find and carve a spot into the Republican landscape and extreme right that tends to control the Republican primary process.”

It is also, because Planned Parenthood does not use tax money to fund abortions, a blatant attack on women’s health. Abortions are a very small part of what the organization does (just 3 percent). Planned Parenthood is a place women can go when they have no place else to go, when other options are closed to them, for contraception, for pregnancy testing, for cancer screenings, and more.

Ted Cruz has not declared war on Planned Parenthood. He has declared war on women. And couched it in terms of a holy crusade.

Lane’s American Renewal Project claims “More than 100,000 pastors received e-mail invitations over the weekend to participate in conference calls with Cruz on Tuesday in which they will learn details of the plan to mobilize churchgoers in every congressional district beginning Aug. 30.”

We’ll see what kind of traction Cruz gets. He has an uphill battle ahead of him, because Americans favor federal funding of Planned Parenthood health services, as Reuters recently reported.

Cruz himself appeared on Newsmax TV Tuesday to repeat his vow that he would immediately defund Planned Parenthood if he were elected:

“Absolutely,” Cruz told “The Hard Line” host Ed Berliner. “I will instruct the United States Department of Justice to open an investigation into Planned Parenthood and to prosecute any and all criminal violations by that organization.”

It is a federal crime. It is a felony to sell the body parts of unborn children. What a sad statement about our government today that nobody in the media, nobody in the political world, thinks there’s any chance whatsoever — zero chance — that the Obama Justice Department would even investigate Planned Parenthood because they’re a political ally of the president.

It doesn’t matter that they’re caught on tape admitting to multiple felonies. The administration of justice should be blind to party and ideology and should follow the laws and the Constitution.

One of the things I intend to do as president is bring back integrity to the U.S. Department of Justice.

It’s Benghazi all over again. Invent a scandal, fake a video or two, and then despite all the evidence to the contrary, trumpet it as the truth and demand something be done. In television spots, we hear the question asked,

“How did America become a country that harvests organs from unborn children? And who has the courage to stop it?”

Like a nightmare, Cruz’s visage appears and we are told “Ted Cruz will prosecute and defund Planned Parenthood. Help Cruz restore American values.”

American values. Like not letting women decide on their own healthcare choices. American values. Like telling people who can and cannot get married, or indeed, that because Cruz’ Evangelical friends do not approve of your sexual persuasion or your lifestyle choices, or even your failure to attend church regularly, you should lose your job.

Ted Cruz characterized his encounter with actress Ellen Page at the Iowa State Fair, where she took him to task for these Medieval attitudes, as an example of “liberal fascism” – a contradiction in terms – you know, because she disagreed with him.

Afterward, he went crying to Newsmax’s Ed Berliner and told him,

“That was not a big surprise that she and I had some disagreements there. An awful lot of folks in the media, an awful lot of folks in Hollywood, they dismiss the assault on religious liberty. They say it isn’t real.”

That would be because it isn’t real. Just like the Planned Parenthood videos aren’t real. You can almost hear Glenn Beck in the background shouting, “Why isn’t anyone talking about this?”

Because you invented it, you nimrod.

According to Cruz – and this seems to be his campaign theme – “There is a war on faith in America today.” Sure, Trump declared war on the War on Christmas, but Cruz is going whole hog in favor of theocracy, fulfilling the wet dream of Pat Robertsons and Tony Perkinses and Bryan Fischers everywhere to impose fake-Christian hypocrisy on this great nation.

Because our Founding Fathers apparently forgot to do it.

If Trump seems bent on alienating Hispanic voters, Cruz has a woman problem. More specifically, despite his claim that “scripture commands Christians to love everybody,” he has a problem with women. He claims to be a champion of religious freedom while seeking to impose his religious beliefs on everyone else. He claims the right, as a white male, to make decisions for women and while narrowing choices, poses as a champion of freedom.

In true Republican fashion, he claims liberty is tyranny and that his tyranny is somehow liberty. It ain’t so. It’s never been so.

This nation was founded on liberal values, which are enshrined in our Constitution, that all of us, not just David Lane’s Evangelicals, have equal rights before the law. That includes women. And by calling for the defunding Planned Parenthood, Ted Cruz has shown that he plans to climb over the bodies of women to claw his way into the White House.

And what Cruz’s false “war on faith” narrative and his embrace of Lane’s view that America was founded by Christians and for Christians shows is that you can’t get less American than Ted Cruz.
