In a story sounding like eerily close to the Oscar Pistorious murder trial, a San Antonio man “mistakenly” shot and killed his 48-year-old wife inside their home after “mistaking her for an intruder.”

“Investigators say a man shot and killed his wife inside the couple’s San Antonio home after apparently mistaking her for an intruder,”NBCDWF reported in a story headlined “San Antonio Man Mistakenly Shoots, Kills Wife, Police Say”.

The San Antonio Express News reported:

The man, who has not been identified, told police he heard noises coming from the front of the house in the 3500 block of Bent Hollow after 4 a.m., and saw a flash of light. Police said the man thought someone was trying to break into the house, so he got a gun and fired one round at the supposed intruder. Police said the man then realized he had shot his wife, 48. Her identity has not been released publicly.

The woman had a gunshot wound to the upper body, according to police. Officers tried to resuscitate her, but emergency medical technicians pronounced her dead on the scene.

So the premise here is that he could not see who he was shooting, but he managed to, with one shot, shoot his wife in the chest and kill her.

The man has not been charged with a crime at this time, but he is being interviewed by the homicide unit according to Officer Doug Greene with SAPD.

In a related link on the NBC local affiliate site is the story of two adults shot and killed Friday night during a custody dispute near a local a Fort Worth fast food chain, witnessed by juveniles.

This on the heels of a day when the mass shooting chart had to be updated throughout the day due to several school shootings, one in Arizona and one in Texas, would indicate to rational people that the deadly power of guns is not being respected and they are too easily obtained.

We have mainstreamed guns without mainstreaming any responsibilities that should accompany gun ownership.

As German Lopez at Vox pointed out yesterday, “School shootings, as horrific as they are, are only a tiny fraction of all gun-related deaths in the US every day. Based on 2013 data, there are approximately 92 gun deaths on average each day in America — about 30 per day are homicides, and roughly 58 are suicides.”
