In a conference call with reporters, Clinton campaign chief strategist Joel Benenson said that Bernie Sanders has no credible path to the winning the Democratic nomination.

HFA Chief Strategist Joel Benenson said that the Sanders campaign has no path to victory in the Democratic primary, “Barack Obama got to the majority with pledged delegates. That’s how our party has worked and worked well, and that’s a fact, and there is no problem there. What it is clear and what is a major problem for them is that they’ve got a massive deficit with pledged delegates….He (Sanders senior advisor Tad Devine) knows what he has to do, and they’ve got to make up a lot of ground. They’ve just got a deficit that going to be is very hard to make up. They haven’t yet…I haven’t seen anything that you guys have reported that says that they’ve been able to make a credible case for having a path to winning this thing because they don’t.”

Benenson pointed out that Sanders got as many net delegates in his three wins on Saturday as the Clinton campaign got out one victory in a big state like Florida and Texas. Benenson said that Sanders has got to change the race materially. The Clinton campaign said that Sanders can’t win close elections and make a dent in Clinton’s lead. He pointed out that a two or three point win for Sanders makes the delegate math worse because the number of available delegates comes off the table.

With Hillary Clinton only needing 34% of the remaining delegates, it’s clear that she is the favorite to be the Democratic nominee. What the Clinton campaign was suggesting was that Bernie Sanders is going to have to dramatically change the trajectory of this primary election. Sanders would have to put up big wins in Wisconsin, New York, and New Jersey before they even get to California if he has any hope of catching Clinton.

The Clinton campaign is working hard to have the nomination all but locked up by April 26. The Sanders campaign is focused on discussing what they view as their path to the Democratic nomination, but that path is not an easy one and based on the way the previous big state contests have gone, the odds are not on the side of Sen. Sanders.

The message that the Clinton campaign is sending is that unless Bernie Sanders can buck the odds, Hillary Clinton is on her way to becoming the Democratic nominee.
