According to a bombshell story, the staff of the Sanders campaign has known for weeks and months that Bernie Sanders was not going to win the Democratic nomination.

According to a story in Politico:

Top Sanders aides admit that it’s been weeks, if not months, since they themselves realized he wasn’t going to be win, and they’ve been operating with a Trump’s-got-no-real-shot safety net. They debate whether Sanders’ role in the fall should be a full vote-for-Clinton campaign, or whether he should just campaign hard against Trump without signing up to do much for her directly.

They haven’t been able to get Sanders focused on any of that, or on the real questions about what kind of long term organization to build out of his email list. They know they’ll have their own rally in Philadelphia – outside the the convention hall—but that’s about as far as they’ve gotten.

“He wants to be in the race until the end, until the roll call vote,†Weaver said.

According to the story, the person who has been clinging to the notion that he can still win the nomination is Bernie Sanders. According to Politico, part of the reason that Sanders is staying in the race is that he is holding on to the remote thought that Hillary Clinton will be indicted for her use of email while Sec. of State.

The story paints a damning portrait of a presidential candidate who might have blown his shot at winning the Democratic nomination by making a series of bad decisions. The end of the campaign inside stories are always shaped by people within the campaign who may have an ax to grind, but what is clear is that the public image of the Sanders campaign may have been very different from what was going on behind closed doors.

It seems that the one person who needs to come to grips with the reality of his defeat is Sen. Bernie Sanders.
