Carl Bernstein told CNN’s Reliable Sources that Donald Trump “lives and thrives in a fact-free environment.” Worse, “No president, including Richard Nixon, has been so ignorant of fact and disdains fact in the way this President-elect does.”
And Bernstein would know. It was he, along with Bob Woodward, who exposed Nixon’s Watergate scandal.

“Trump lives and thrives in a fact-free environment. No president, including Richard Nixon, has been so ignorant of fact and disdains fact in the way that this president-elect does. It has something to do with the growing sense of authoritarianism that he and his presidency are projecting and the danger of it is obvious and he’s trying to make the conduct of the press an issue not his own conduct.”
Bernstein used Trump’s twitter assault on Indiana steelworker and union leader Chuck Jones to prove “He doesn’t go to a fact-based argument. He goes to an emotional argument.”
As Bernstein pointed out, this is nothing new, with the thin-skinned Trump lashing out at every perceived slight:
“What we have seen throughout the campaign is pathological disdain for the truth, a kind of lie, and ease with lying, that we have not seen before.”
It is not easy surpassing Nixon’s dishonesty and disregard for the facts; Mitt Romney tried, but Donald Trump has done it, and surrounded himself with like-minded conspiracy theorists who prefer fake news to real news.
