Rachel Maddow slammed Donald Trump’s weak and confused response to the humanitarian crisis in Syria on Wednesday, saying that not even the president’s own Pentagon knows what the administration’s policy is.
“What are you doing?” Maddow asked of Trump, who appears to have no clue how to move forward with a response to Syria’s recent chemical attack, which has killed up to 100 innocent civilians.
Maddow tore into Trump:
Pentagon officials … have no idea what they’re supposed to be doing toward Syria now at the Pentagon. After the president criticized the apparent chemical weapons attack today, nobody’s who’s actually in the business of putting the president’s money where his mouth knows what he actually wants to them to do … The Pentagon does not know. They have no idea what he wants. They’re going to reporters to try to get answers that way … What are you doing? What do you mean? What are you signaling not just to our enemies and the people who would challenge us around the world? What are you signaling to our government and military? The people who work for you literally have no idea what you mean or what they should be doing.
The president’s approach to foreign policy doesn’t just project weakness and confuse our allies, it also emboldens our enemies to push the limits and test American leadership at a time when the commander-in-chief is clearly unstable and unfit to hold the office.
It’s likely why North Korea is now flexing its muscle and launching missile tests. It could also be why, as some reports indicate, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad waged a chemical attack on his own people – just to see how far he could go with Trump in the White House.
Without a coherent foreign policy or stable commander-in-chief, members of Trump’s own administration don’t have a clue what the president will do next. For the safety and security of the American people and the rest of the world, this is a nightmare.
For our enemies, it’s a dream come true.
