James Comey has been a credible witness, who has been fair and absolutely unshakable in his testimony. Senate Intelligence Committee Republicans have been unable to dent Comey, and his testimony about Trump has been damning.
The problem for Republicans has been throughout Comey’s testimony that they have not been able to harm his account of his conversations with Trump. There have been so many bad moments for Trump during this hearing. Comey explained that he took notes on his conversations with Trump because he believed that Trump would lie about the conversations. Comey said that Trump is being investigated for obstruction of justice, and he said that he took Trump’s words about letting go of the investigation of Mike Flynn as an order.
It is difficult to see how this hearing could go worse for Trump. The former FBI Director is telling the American people that the President Of The United States lied to them about why he was fired. The Republicans on the panel have been unable to paint Comey as a disgruntled former employee who should have done more to correct Trump’s bad behavior.
Comey’s testimony was the sort of moment in political history that ends presidencies. Comey’s description of Trump paints a picture of a man who is obsessed with the Russia investigation, and completely out of control. Republicans will try to spin Comey’s testimony, but it is impossible to understate how bad this morning is going for Trump.
