The 5 Biggest Lies In Mitt Romney’s Acceptance Speech
Mitt Romney delivered an acceptance speech that stretched, massaged, distorted, and flat out violated the truth. Here are the five biggest lies uttered by Romney in Tampa.
1). Mitt Romney Goes Birther
What Romney Said, “Tonight that American flag is still there on the moon. And I don’t doubt for a second that Neil Armstrong’s spirit is still with us: that unique blend of optimism, humility and the utter confidence that when the world needs someone to do the really big stuff, you need an American.”
The Truth: Ah yes, what would a gathering of more than four Republicans be if somebody didn’t suggest in the most sly way that Obama is not American. Romney’s statement can also be viewed as when you need really big stuff done, you need a white man. It was subtle, but it was there. Romney was doing his best Ronald Reagan all-American impression. If Romney is Captain America, then what does that make Barack Obama?
2). Romney Says he Won’t Raise Taxes on the Middle Class
What Romney Said, “Unlike President Obama, I won’t raise taxes on the middle class of America.”
The Truth: Romney’s tax plan is classic trickle down economics. Romney’s tax plan lowers on the top 2% of earners and raises taxes on everyone else. According to the Tax Policy Center, taxes on the middle class would go up by about $2,000 to pay for Romney’s tax cut for the wealthy.
3). Romney Promises to Create 12 Million New Jobs and Claims Obama has no Jobs Plan
What Romney Said, “And unlike the president, I have a plan to create 12 million new jobs.”
The Truth: This is a double whopper on Romney’s part, and one that he is fond of repeating on the campaign trail. First, President Obama does have a plan to create jobs. It’s called the American Jobs Act, and it was killed by congressional Republicans.
The second part of Romney’s lie was a bit more devious. Romney promised to create 12 million new jobs, because he and his campaign know that economic forecasts show that if nothing is done, the economy will create 11.8 on its own. Mitt Romney is suggested that America should elect him because his leadership will be 200,000 jobs better than doing absolutely nothing. That is the kind of leadership that Mitt Romney is promising America.
4). Romney Accuses Obama of Not Creating Jobs, Wanting to Raise Taxes on Small Business, and Assaulting Coal, Oil and Natural Gas
What Romney Said, “His policies have not helped create jobs, they have depressed them. And this I can tell you about where President Obama would take America: His plan to raise taxes on small business won’t add jobs, it will eliminate them; His assault on coal and gas and oil will send energy and manufacturing jobs to China; His trillion dollar cuts to our military will eliminate hundreds of thousands of jobs, and also put our security at greater risk.”
The Truth: This was a triple play of lies. So far Obama has created 4.5 million jobs. Obama’s extension of the Bush tax cuts for everyone but the rich actually cuts taxes for 97% of small businesses. Oil, coal, and natural gas production have all increased under Obama. Coal production is up 0.93%. Oil production is up 5.7%, and natural gas is up 22%.
5). Romney Claims Obama Began his Presidency with an Apology Tour
What Romney Said, “I will begin my presidency with a jobs tour. President Obama began with an apology tour. America, he said, had dictated to other nations. No Mr. President, America has freed other nations from dictators.”
The Truth: This is a huge lie that has been debunked by every fact checker in the United States. It is also one of the Republican Party’s favorite lies about Obama.
As The Washington Post’s Fact Checker put it, “The claim that Obama repeatedly has apologized for the United States is not borne out by the facts, especially if his full quotes are viewed in context. Obama often was trying to draw a rhetorical distinction between his policies and that of President Bush, a common practice when the presidency changes parties. The shift in policies, in fact, might have been more dramatic from Clinton to Bush than from Bush to Obama, given how Obama has largely maintained Bush’s approach to fighting terrorism. In other cases, Obama’s quotes have been selectively trimmed for political purposes. Or they were not much different than sentiments expressed by Bush or his secretary of state. Republicans may certainly disagree with Obama’s handling of foreign policy or particular policies he has pursued, but they should not invent a storyline that does not appear to exist.”
Overall, Romney’s speech was just like everything else we have seen from the Republican nominee. It was long on Obama bashing and lacking a real vision for the future. There were few specifics, sparse details, and the only thing to be gained from his speech that Romney wouldn’t do what Obama did.
The question Romney never answered is why anyone should vote for him?
What Romney will do as president? He won’t tell you. The opening of the speech was designed to humanize Romney and get voters to like him, but stories about getting a church’s pension fund aren’t the kind of thing that connects with voters.
Mitt Romney was going for I feel your pain, but what came out was I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore. A fresh bit of Botox can’t smooth out the wrinkles in this candidate. Mitt Romney came in to Tampa as fatally flawed nominee, and he leaves having addressed none of those flaws.
Romney’s speech will be forgotten by Labor Day, and he will be even further behind in the polls after Obama speaks next Thursday. The under card is finished. Democrats are bringing the star power and the main event is heading to Charlotte.

The star of the convention was hurricane Isaac.
All in all, it was a big disappointment and a huge waste of time.
Romney is Romney, a loser without a suit. Aloof, out of touch and seriously in need of a plan. He still looks like a deer caught in the headlights, a sneak thief caught breaking in. He didn’t have charisma before and ain’t got it now.
Ryan is an Albatross around Romney’s neck and he himself is another failed last white hope.
I can’t feel sorry for the man, he should have gone into male modeling, he looks good in a Sears suit, just as long as he doesn’t have to talk.

Two more lies. Romney said gasoline prices have doubled. Not true! Gasoline prices hit their all time high in July 2008, the last summer of the Bush administration. He also said utility prices are up. If your electricity and heat are from natural gas, your utilities are DOWN.

Republican/Mitt Romney policies: Income Inequality = I’m rich, and that’s all that matters. Voting rights: Only rich white males should be able to vote. Taxes: Give all money to the rich, and everyone else can be slaves. Truth = Repeat lies until stupid people accept them as truth to hide your agenda, and publicly destroy those who oppose you. Food safety = I don’t have to eat “poor people food” so why should I care if any of you die eating it? Public Relations = Sponsor hate groups, and fan the flames of bigotry. Education = Keep people as stupid as possible so that they keep voting for Republicans who hate them. Military policy = War for profit, and I don’t care how many innocent people die so long as my war stocks go up. Health care = die. Jobs = outsourcing. Unemployment = Hurry up and die. Women’s rights = get back in the kitchen and poop out some more babies you can’t support, and we’re not going to help you with them either. Mitt Romney = death of America. Unemployment will do nothing but increase wherever Republicans have power. I made a video about unemployment, and how we can fix it. It’s at my YouTube channel Zarrakan, and here’s the name:

He dragged the birther nonsense in his speech.
Mr. Obama is an American citizen.
He is born in Hawaii.
I am born in Ohio.
If I showed my birth certificate and certificate of live birth, some Tea Party racist would dispute it.
The Right wing in this country has bashed Black people as being less patriotic and un-American.
I AM AN AMERICAN, AND SO IS OBAMA.

And the implied lie is that Obama is responsible for gas prices and HE IS NOT, no president is!

It was truly dishonorable for him to make any reference at all to Obama’s American citizenship. That is contemptible.

I don’t fully agree with Truth #1. Romney set us up for the punchline of the joke that came towards the end of his speech, when he referred to severe consequences for “trade cheaters” – I would assume the reference was to China – and the hardball attitude toward Putin.
Since he had been speaking towards the Reagan Era, I can only assume that he would like to restart the cold war again and stoke up more tensions with China. Shoot – Reagan ducked all the really tough questions by either kidney punching the Chinese or tearing up the Soviets. My thinking is this was Romney’s vision of being All-American.

” . . . when the world needs someone to do the really big stuff, you need an American.”
“Do the really big stuff” — like be the first to climb Mt. Everest or the first to orbit the earth?
‘Twas a Brit and a Nepalese, and a Russian, respectively, who did those, Mitt . . .
“And unlike the president, I have a plan to create 12 million new jobs.”
Sure.
IN CHINA.
“I will begin my presidency with a jobs tour. President Obama began with an apology tour.”
Willard, Willard, Willard . . .
When will you and your fellow rightwingnuts realize this simple fact: President Obama was NOT “apologizing for America” — he was APOLOGIZING FOR HIS PREDECESSOR. HUGE difference!!

The blame of high gas prices goes squarely on the oil speculators, and their bids on North Sea oil, the highest priced crude on the planet. Shut this market down, and we’ll see a drop, a big one.

Thanks Jason, I was too occupied laughing at Empty Chair/Invisible Obama jokes to pay attention.
If anyone isn’t a Real Friggin American it’s mitt and his dodgy tax schemes and hidden tax returns. He’s a big lying creep who has bought his way into running for the white house.
I can’t wait until he has to go home and quit his psychotic trash talk.

I went to bed and read a book.
He is despicable.
Of course they did not mention abortion and women’s rights.
What would he have said? Women don’t know what is best for them. And the men will have to take care of it for them.

We tried…then switched to a recorded Jon Stewart…went back…switched back to Stewart…went back…couldn’t stand it and watch Colbert…
We tried just listening instead of looking at him…nope, that didn’t work. The hearing that hokey delivery tainted with lies was worse than watching the “new acting lessons” plan…and, not just HIS acting lessons, no, but the inner circle.
All of them were given acting lessons on how to look into the camera, feign the proper face with the appropriate emoting at certain key points in the speech. All of them were told to not smile with open mouths; at the end of each line they were taught to “think” puppy dog eyes begging for a cookie, of please, I wanna get laid-look, then keep the smile pulled back and think “Please?”
…it was blatantly fake and sickening.

It’s clear that those that have read this are Obama supporters. It sure seems that an intelligent person can clearly see what a terrible candidate Romney is. But what scares me is the assumption by many on the left that Obama’s re-election is a slam dunk. It is not. In the swing states, Barack is being out spent 2-1. It is extremely important that we do not take this election for granted. Contribute what you can to the President’s campaign, even if it’s just a couple bucks. The Koch brother’s money cannot overmatch ours if we pool together. More importantly, get out and vote. Get your friends and family members out to vote. This may be the most important election of our time. Please do not stay home on Election Day.

I want to know since when do we bring in our faith, church and lies into the same scenario. The Mormon faith only help their own and he said as much by saying they helped their members. All I see is a desperate man with a lot of money having everyone else try to ‘define’ him because he is hollow. He is either trying not to laugh or trying to keep the bullshit from flowing from his mouth by keeping his lips tight shut. All these people want is to get us into another war to help the economy. These “People” scare the shit out of me. I will be voting for the first time in November. This Is The Most Important Election Of Our Lifetime. Bar None.

I’m glad you mentioned it. As someone who studies that market I was especially ticked off about that distortion. The fact is, yes, as bush was leaving office gas prices were lower. However, several months prior they reached a record high of $147 a barrel. They had been following a long upward trend, and peaked. Recessionary fears and a crisis in the energy sector caused a sharp collapse, temporary, of energy prices. After that brief depression, prices again began to climb. Although, they never did reach the Bush high again.

To be SLIGHTLY fair to Mr. Romney, he is correct in a way, Gas prices HAVE doubled since President Obama took office. The caveat is WHY they were so low – the world economy had crashed into a deep recession, and demand was way, way, WAY down. They like to point out the results, but not the cause.

Romney didn’t lie when he said he wouldn’t raise taxes on the middle class. His plan is to stand by and watch the GOP-controlled House do it for him.

James,
The telling of a partial (not even half) truth is a method of creating cognitive dissonance; liars usually excel at this method…it’s created so that you don’t use critical thinking skills, however, if you are skilled in using critical thinking, then, you ask questions, like you’re doing. Mittens isn’t use to ANY ONE questioning his thoughts, deeds, or words.

Sandra,
It’s really funny that you’re complaining about Romney lying when you yourself are spouting senseless lies. The Mormon church does not just help its own and, in fact, has one of the largest humanitarian efforts in the world and openly helps whoever they can. Maybe you should check your facts on both the Mormon church and Romney before you start spreading lies of your own.

Watch it all of us Buckeyes born in Ohio prior to 1953. There is a case that we were not born in the USA since in 1953, in preparation of the 150th year that Ohio thought it became a state, it was discovered that the papers were never officially signed.

Big oil has been exporting more gas and oil then we import to keep supplies low so they can rape us on a gallon of gas. It is a scam to blame Obama.

Mormon or not a Mormon, eventually we will have a Mormon candidate who is worthy of the Presidency but it is not Romney. Daily, he is proven that he is cheating and his fellow candidate has proven himself to be a boldfaced liar. His hometown people can vouch for the fact that the GM plant there closed during the Bush years. If he can look you straight in the eyes with such (phony) sincerity, watch out! Ann Romney is a saint, a Latter Day Saint that is and I liked her presentation. There is no doubt in my mind that she prayed for it to be good. It was. And the great points she made in placing emphasis on the plight of women in general but especially mothers. Most men probably felt self-conscious, if not guilty as was I, and they should. The next day, and I am repeating myself, I saw the camera panning over to A.R. while Condoleeza Rice fell in line with the negative ones, I saw a sort of disappointed look on Ann’s face. It was as if she thought to herself: “That is not what I intended”. She is loyal to her husband, of course, but she is very different from him. She did have the makings of a potential First Lady. But she will go on with her life and not even be too disappointed! It may even be a relief to her when they are not chosen by The American People. I do mean all of them, not just Boehner and McConnell’s choices (as they have so often said publicly). I go along with others who commented on the fact that this election is going to be of great importance. But we have been so polarized that there may not be any noticeable voter apathy. Having said that I must say that volunteer work is of great importance. Most of us feel guilty enough not being able to keep up with the requests for contributions. There are so many opportunities to do good volunteer work. We need help with early voting and countering voter fraud as well as violations of voter rights laws. Do not let BP off the hook on the Gulf Coast including with bird sanctuaries.
