An Ohio Republican Speaks for the Nation: ‘I’ve Never Seen Such Hate as in the GOP’
By: Sarah JonesSep. 30th, 2012more from Sarah Jones
Romney’s biggest problem in Ohio is that not only is Obama leading in the polls, but he has slightly more support from Republicans than Romney does from Democrats. One such Republican, a 70-year-old retired store owner, says he has voted Republican for almost all of his life, but not this year.
Wayne Butterfass told the Columbus Dispatch in an email, “All you have to do is look at the Republican platform. I’ve never seen such HATE this year in the Republican Party, national or state.”
The Columbus Dispatch printed part of Mr. Butterfass’ email, “Obama was handed an economy on the skids, after eight years of Bush. All he ever did was think about war. I’m afraid Romney will do the same, especially the trickle-down theory.” He continued, “I don’t know why any woman or gay would ever vote for Romney. All you have to do is look at the Republican platform. I’ve never seen such HATE this year in the Republican Party, national or state.”
Not only is Ohio leaning Obama right now, but Ohioans think Vice President Joe Biden is more qualified for his job than Paul Ryan would be for the same job by 8 points.
Obama is leading Romney by 9 points in Ohio according to a new Dispatch poll, and early balloting starts in two days.
Wayne Butterfass is not alone is his disgust with his former party. According to Stan Greenberg, the Republican Party has lost 5 points in voter identification over the past month. He writes, “Contempt for the Republicans is pushing Democrats into the lead, not only in the presidential race but across Senate and likely many House races as well.”
Interestingly, a month ago Ohio was an even race. Today, it’s a plus 9 for Obama, suggesting that the Republican National Convention, the Ryan pick, and the 47% comments have damaged Romney in Ohio, along with his tone deaf “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt” editorial.

The Republicans are the party of hate by virtue of their goals which exclude 99% of people. What the Republicans want is the complete destruction/subjugation of the non-rich to give everything to RICH WHITE STRAIGHT MEN. Unemployment will do nothing but increase wherever Republicans have power. I made a video about unemployment, and how we can fix it. It’s at my YouTube channel Zarrakan, and here’s the name:

It gives you hope when you see people who are in that party, or have been, who can face what it has become and are willing to take a stand. I have a lot of respect for people like this. Not so much for the people who just repeat whatever they hear on Fox fiction and don’t even realize or care how hateful they sound

Clifford Russell attended Romney’s rally in VA last week. He hates entitlements and had the following to say about the poor: “Yes, I mean it. Get rid of all of them, give the kids up for adoption, execute the parents, and you get rid of the problem.” (When I call him back to revisit the issue, he elaborates: “put the children up for adoption and execute the parents, and word would get out soon” that poor people shouldn’t have kids.”)

Yep, many in today’s GOP hate some of their fellow citizens, especially People of Color, our LGBTQ citizens, and Hispanics, along with many others.

I think he’s real, Reynardine, and I think he’s indicative of the way many republicans feel about the poor. He might not have been so bold to air his feelings in the recent past, but he is now, and I think the reason is that our current president is a Person of Color. People like Clifford Russell tend to think we’re all on food stamps, live in the ghetto, and that we were all raised without fathers in the home. He’s a stupid man who has made zero effort to find out how other Americans live, and imo, because of this, it’s easy to see why he supports Romney. He, like Romney and Ryan, has written off millions of his fellow citizens as being worthless individuals whose main concern is sucking that government teat!

I can’t wrap my head around why they’re so anti-birth control when they are so against entitlements. I’m surprised they’re not handing out tubal ligations and vasectomies to the poor. In fact, I’m surprised they’re not rounding the poor up to force them on them. It wasn’t that long ago that they did that. My aunt was sterilized by state order because she had epilepsy in the 1950′s.

Part of the reason is the christian fundies such as the Quiverful group. They need millions of soldiers to fight the muslims(according to them). The catholics, well they need to keep the church full and the money coming in

I was reading in the commentaries of one of the liberal progressive blogs that some think that caucasions may be more likely to avail themselves of more rigorous birth control measures and postpone starting a family. They(cauc.) may be more likely,in some people’s minds,to have higher degrees in education therefore the need to stay childless longer in order to cultivate a position in their field of employment. Or further a degree.
In short, what was actually said is that they fear the “white lilly” is going to become overshaddowed. Or not be in the majority anymore (which is true already is it not?)
(Oh, the horror of it all.) jk

Well, because there is nothing like an unwanted and inevitable childbirth to make a woman, or better, a girl, repent of having a twat. After that, the sooner you can use up, wear out, and kill off the children, the better. See? No contradiction at all.

Wow — so much for being “pro-life” . . .
And this guy Russell says he hates entitlements, but I’ll bet, as a retired engineer, he has plenty of ‘em: pension, health care — I wonder does he count himself as one of those welfare moochers . . .

People like this man believe and say these outrageouso things because though he refrains from identifying specific groups, most know he’s referring to blacks, hispanics and other minorities. He would never believe that it’s his(white) race that makes up most of the welfare/foodstamps recepients.
He’s too stupid to realise that it’s deregualtions that caused the Wall Street meltdown and greedy 1%ers who are actually destroying the economy with all the tax loopholes they abuse yet he’s complainng about too muc regulation. There’s no chance of reasoning intelligently with these people, they just don’t have the intelligence to actually look at the broader issues. They have been completely brainwashed. Poor America.

If you have a lot of friends on Facebook (1600+ because I’m a “gamer”) you have witnessed this phenomenon for 2-3 years. The ugliness is astounding and the constant empty repetition of Fox News talking-points is evident if you attempt a discussion. Moreover, there are actually very few PRO-Romney posts, almost all are ANTI-Obama. Since the advent of the Tea Party people openly express thoughts that would never have been considered acceptable.
The seeds that were planted by the RW noise-machine(s) have taken root. The world looks on in dismay.

I overheard two longtime Republican friends discussing the election and one said he has decided either not to vote or to vote for Obama because at this point he wants the GOP to lose badly. “I think it’s the only way to get our party back. I don’t even recognize it anymore. The Tea Party jerks have pushed out anyone moderate or capable of compromise.”. The other guy responded, “I’ve been thinking the same thing. These guys embarrass me. I don’t even like to say I’m a Republican anymore. I saw it coming when they started getting rabid about gay rights, immigration and choice. I guess I’m socially moderate and fiscally conservative, but there doesn’t seem to be any room for me. And the racism is appalling.”
All reasons I left the party I was raised in decades ago.

This strikes me as the key – if mainstream Republicans every want to get their party back on track then they need to defeat as many of the Tea Party inspired candidates as possible. Even if you’ve never voted Democratic Party in your life, you should be voting Democratic Party this time around if your GOP candidate is of the Tea Party persuasion or anything similar.

Or you can do what millions of voters, conservative and progressive, are doing this election…vote for a third party or write-in candidate. Jill Stein (Green Party) and Gary Johnson (Libertarian) are on the ballot in most states. It is timefor Americans to stop holding their noses at the polls.

They sound like the members of our family, now about 1/3 of them, who have re-registered as Independents. They don’t want to identify as Republicans when they see the hatred that’s been associated with their party for the last four years. Republican “hero”, Ronald Reagan, could not be elected today on the platform he ran on in 1980. Worse yet, these same RWers still refer to the days of Reagan as ideal when the reality was that Reagan not only raised taxes, he was most definitely in favor of the wealthy paying more than others. His proposals regarding nuclear proliferation would be seen as treasonous by the GOP of today.
A very good friend of our family, well known in the GOP and prominent in D.C. was telling us recently that both he and his wife were voting for Obama. While the former Republicans in my family voted for President Obama in ’08 and will be doing so again, the idea of voting anything but Republican would have been an impossibility for this well known Republican. Now he not only finds it impossible to vote for Romney but he was saying both he and his wife will be voting straight Democratic ticket for the first time ever. He’s aware that PBO needs a Congress that will work with him and doesn’t want to see anymore Tea Party members elected with their strict “no compromise” solution to all Democratic proposals. They are also horrified by the war on women and how it will affect their daughters and granddaughters. This is what the GOP has brought on themselves with their seditious, treasonous behavior for the last four years. They have only themselves to blame, with their hate-filled speeches and divisive tactics. I’ve always been a Democrat and have believed in a two party system but not with this GOP and their insane ideology. Maybe this will bring about the change that is so desperately needed in the Republican party.

Thank you Mr. Butterfast…..very nice to hear from you. I live in Florida, I have been in a number of places and countries in the last 35 years…but my heart and my longest family records and memories reside in the state of Ohio…thank you for your comments…..
I have recently sent a letter to my little town in Florida that you might support….
Ok, so this is on my mind…there is this big sign hanging on a residents property down in the rich part of our island here in FL that says “Vote for the American” …getting lots of controversy in our local paper. So I am reminded of two stories of two very different men.
I think about two people who raised a small boy of a mixed marriage. The mother of this child was quite an interesting character, worked hard to get a PhD to work in Anthropology around the world. But the two main “raisers” of this mixed race child were the grandparents–two great Middle Class Midwest Americans—One, a WW2 Army Vet, and a One a strong woman who was “Rosie the Riveter” working in the factories during WW2, and who, without any college education, but through amazingly hard work rose to a role in management in banking in the 50′s and beyond. Their strong Midwest values, and Methodist Christian religion were the prime influences on this young man’s life. These are the folks who truly led a man who had the odds against him from his earliest years.
And then there was this other man, who was raised by a family that fled the United States to go to Mexico to protect their strong beliefs in Poligamy, which I do find a valiant move. The son of this family was born in Mexico, and he had a choice to declare his children of Mexico or the United States, and he decided to make them children of the United States. He also decided to take welfare as to be able to return to the United States as refugees to get benefits to return to the US, and declare his children American Citizens. One of the sons of this refugee-status gentleman,…

Perhaps being born “to money” is a curse. It distorts reality, saps drive, limits freedom of association, instills paranoia. Like “the beautiful” they skate by in life on what was given to them, not what they worked for, reach for, strived for. Deep down they may have this utter terror of losing their looks, their money and be left destitute. The process of striving develops resiliency.

I had a teacher in high school who taught us many things, but among them was the phrase “Hate is love perverted”…
People have been convinced somewhere along the line that it is better to pervert the human mind into a ego-centered belief that superiority of gender and race is a path of “liberation” (to a heaven/gods favor in the afterlife)…it’s still the same old perversion of tribal, reptilian brains that causes violence and revenge. They’ve never learned the words “consequences for you actions”.
I doubt they ever will learn not to hate…

I find it interesting that so many people comment on the “hateful” rhetoric from the GOP. I have been bombarded this election season with an incredible amount of hateful rhetoric from the Dems. It occurs to me that both sides are abandoning reason and that our country is now in serious trouble. If the public discourse doesn’t improve we are doomed.

Sorry Tim, the false equivalance is just another lie. The liberals offer facts. Surely, they offer facts that support their position and don’t bring up facts that weaken their position, but they are facts none the less.
Pointing out that someone else’s speech is merely hate-mongering is not, in and of itself, hateful. Once again, that’s simply a fact. Besides all of that, the Right can say whatever they like, I believe what they do, and what they’ve done so far is nothing but oppositional, old school fear and hate mongering. I left the GOP six years ago because of it. It just wasn’t making any sense anymore.
