A Global Catastrophe in the Making – Invasion Iran 2013
more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson
The cat is out of the bag: vote Republican in 2012 and get war with Iran. It’s not a new song they’re singing: Sarah Palin claimed this spring that Iran wanted to destroy the United States, about as absurd a proposition as you can imagine. And Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) proposed attacking Iran in November 2010. But the stakes are higher now as we move toward the 2012 endgame. The most recent debate reveals that fear and loathing of Iran is real and relevant for Republicans, raising the fearful specter of war – and not only war but an unholy crusade – before 2013 is over
We have already attacked Iraq and nearly got our asses handed to us. We have attacked the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and toppled it, then nearly threw a bloodless victory away and got bogged down in a war that has gone on longer than the Vietnam War, and which still shows no signs of ending. The United States has spent one trillion dollars on these wars and has seen about 5,000 of its young men and women die in addition to nearly a million dead Iraqi and Afghan civilians – over 1.7 million casualties all told, and millions of refugees who have lost everything.
Is the world better off as a result? Is the United States better off? Americans have a right to be concerned. The rhetoric about Iran sounds a lot like the rhetoric that surrounded Iraq in 2001 – alleged weapons of mass destruction Saddam said he didn’t have (he didn’t) and which Iran says they don’t have. Do we want to trust the Republicans twice? And perhaps most worrisome of all, Israel comes into play and with it, fundamentalist Christian end-time scenarios that are as mythical as Homer’s Odyssey to many voters.
Should the United States go to war to satisfy the crazed apocalyptic millennialist yearnings of a minority of fundamentalist voters concerned about the return of a god who hasn’t returned in 2000 years of waiting? These yearnings were in part responsible for the carnage of the First Crusade which did untold damage and caused untold loss of life, including the murder of the entire Muslim population of Jerusalem. Now we are being told that to save Israel we must murder an entire country. It makes you wonder: is this the 21st century or the 11th? Forget the 2003 debacle in Iraq and the nearly decade-long war that followed for a moment: Should we pretend a thousand years of history and all its concomitant horrors has not taken place and double down on already failed policies inspired by religious extremism?
If you want to focus on Iraq over the lessons of medieval history, think about this: We became an international pariah – and justifiably so – after our attack on Iraq. Sure, we had excuses, just like Hitler had excuses to attack Poland, and they were just as dishonest and self-serving; if Poland was Hitler’s War, Iraq was most certainly Bush’s War. There was literally no difference between the two – both were illegal as hell by any reckoning.
Think about the one trillion dollars spent and the prospect of another trillion dollars to be spent on Iran when Republicans are crying about the stimulus, which, according to the Congressional Budget Office, (August 2010) will total $814 billion for the period between February 2009 and the year 2019. It is apparently okay to spend a trillion on wars but not under a trillion on the economy, and then throw another trillion at still more wars. How will it be paid for? It won’t reduce the debt but will add to it at a time when it can be afforded least.
Look at what we are spending on air conditioning alone in Afghanistan and Iraq and ponder Republican opposition to a few million being spent on various programs to help children and needy Americans: $20.2 billion annually. Space program anyone? That’s more than NASA’s budget, as NPR reported in June. Remember, the entire budget of Head Start was only $7.2 billion in 2010 and they went ballistic over a paltry $126 million for the National Weather Service. The benefit to the American taxpayer is far from evident in this thinking, if thinking it can be called. Does anyone seriously think that air conditioning is going to be cheaper in Iran? How many children will have to go without food and clothes and medicine in this country so Republicans can pursue a policy of nihilistic irrationalism?
How many Iranians will have to die to satisfy Republicans that Jesus is coming, or that he has a safe landing pad in Jerusalem? Will they have to keep dying each year Jesus fails to appear? It has already been two millennia. You do the math. If this is about forcing God’s hand then the lesson of the Jewish zealots in Jerusalem in 73 C.E. is relevant – they were still awaiting salvation while the Romans burned the city down around their ears. God, significantly, didn’t show up. Bachmann says they’re going to nuke Israel. Is nuking Iran a superior policy? Isn’t nuking, nuking, whoever it’s directed at? The radiation sure won’t care who it falls on, no more than will conventional munitions.
The United States has finally regained some of the respect in foreign capitals we lost as a result of the Bush Doctrine, but our men and women are still in Iraq and Afghanistan and our economy is in shambles. What better time to attack somebody else for no real reason and get some more of our young men and women killed along with untold numbers of innocent Iranian men, women, and children. There is always room for atrocity in the war-worshiping GOP – not only the “collateral” damage that results from any bombing campaign but atrocities committed by troops on the ground, and by personnel in detention centers as Republicans waterboard their way to heaven.
Just where we are going to get the army, navy, and air force to put in the field is not explained, any more than we are told where the funding will come from if, as Republicans claim, we are broke. Logistics in Afghanistan were a nightmare, and that is a relatively small-scale war. To invade Iran, a huge country compared even to Iraq, full of mountains and deserts would be far more difficult.
According to GlobalFirepower’s admittedly subjective rankings, the United States comes out at #1 and Iran at #12 in the world’s rankings. Yes, the United States has 1.5 million soldiers to Iran’s half-million, 10,000 tanks to Iran’s 2,000 and 18,000 planes to Iran’s 1,000, but however many planes and tanks and men we have, we still have to get them in position to attack Iran and we still have to supply them, and we won’t even on our best day get all the tanks, planes and men that we have into Iran. We have far too many obligations already across the globe to make a case for simple numbers. Yes, superior equipment and training can make up for difference in numbers. But we would have to do a much better job of planning and carrying out those plans than we did in Iraq. Not only that, we would have to have actual objectives – namely, what are we trying to accomplish? Other than simply attacking somebody on ideological grounds, Republicans don’t seem to have answers to these questions – they don’t even seem interested in them.
Famously, President Bush had no idea what to do with Iraq once we toppled Saddam Hussein and what should have been a clear-cut victory turned into a long insurgency causing far more casualties than the invasion itself. The same error in Iran would be catastrophic. Yet there is no evidence, to judge from the take-flight-from-reality crop of Republican candidates that would lead anyone to confidently assert the United States could avoid those errors in invading Iran. More likely, they would be repeated and on an order of magnitude, with disastrous consequences not only for the United States, but as Senator Mark Udall (D –Colorado) warned back in 2010, for the Iranian people, the Middle East, and indeed, the entire world.

Ironic, the Teapublicans were all for Dubya’s wars when he started them, and for them to continue if McCain were President. However they were anti-war when Obama became President, Obama could not do as he promised for these fools, to close Guantanomo Bay, and end the wars. And now, with no aggression towards us, they all want to bomb Iran…..
Firstly, we do not have the resources after two hugely expensive wars, our troops are stretched thin, and we just gave our tanks and everything to Iraq…who do not want us there any longer! And we have all this debt with China, because we borrowed for these wars, rather than let the wealthiest 1% pay their fair share…. where do these idiots think they will find the support and the money, when they refuse to raise the taxes on the top 1%? If they try and raise it off the backs of the 99%, there will be a war, but it will be right here on our soil.
Fools should never be allowed to be nominated or appointed by other fools, Dubya did, and continues to do so much damage to America.

W. actually spelled it out when he was running: no wars for “nation-building” – liberating mere “little people” – but every war for “national interest” – the benefit of the 1%. He told the truth then. Later, he lied, and under the influence of a most conveniently timed 9/11, too many earnest dumb fucks believed him.

Pfff. Let them go to their benefactors (Koch Bros.) to fund it, and send their own silver spoon kids to fight it.
I can’t wait to hear what US military personnel have to say about the possibility of another endless Republican war of choice.

This is pretty damn sickening, and pretty damn scary. Such a war would destroy not only Iran, but do worse than that to us. The Republican party has become the party of pathological malice.
I hope, for the sake of our nation’s future, that the Democratic Party hammers home how destructive this Republican agenda has become. If Americans don’t get it before the election, they’ll have to afterwards. We’ve survived everything until now, but one day, our luck will run out, and that day could come a lot sooner than we like to think.

It’s more likely that the Democrats will back an invasion.

Seriously? The Dems that are pulling troops out of Iraq? Those Dems? Or do you mean the Dems in the republican debates that are saying they are for an invasion along with McCain and Graham?

I am not in favor of Iran having a nuclear capability, but I wish someone would explain why Iran as a sovereign nation with Israel having nuclear weapons does not have the right to have them also. Iran would be suicidal to ever use their capability and are not as crazy as the neocons and right wing Israelis want us to believe.

I have to ask myself why do the Republicans do everything they can to not get elected and yet think they are going to get elected? This country has been against war ever since Bush started his frivolities in Iraq. Don’t these people listen to the people of the United States who were screaming no more war? Is the need to show Israel that you are on their side so great that you would sell America and Americans down the tubes?
It’s true that Iran would last approximately 15 min. after setting off a nuclear bomb in Israel. And there are several entities were saying Iran is close to having a bomb. They should be, they’ve been close to having a bomb since the year 2000. In fact they should’ve had one long ago when we gave them the technology to have them.quite frankly I think they have had some for a considerable amount of time. The only drawback to possessing a nuclear weapon is creating your own radioactive Materials. Making one is no big thing at all for a oil-rich country.and as far as I’m concerned attacking Iran has nothing to do with nuclear bombs and more to do with Israel.
The candidates of small government wanting to Decrease what the people of America have in order to kill more people overseas. I think it’s time that we became a defensive nation who defends its own borders and let the chips fall where they may overseas. I also think it’s time we show these candidates the door

If they do everything not to get elected yet think they can get elected, look out for (a) false flag candidates; (b) faithless electors; (c) manufactured scandals and emergencies; (d). Diebold.

Along with the usual crooked redistricting, voting machine breakdowns in Democratic districts, voter roll purging, ballot stuffing, and intimidation.

Grover Norquist was on TV the other day saying that there is no way that the Republicans can failed to take over the house and win the Senate. He cited the redistricting that they have been doing in states as obviously being to their benefit and the quality of the up-and-coming Senate candidates.
On top of that we have the Republicans doing everything they can against the people of the United States under the real false flag called the deficit and expecting to win. As far as I’m concerned they act like it’s already in the bag which tells me that once again I must say it’s going to be the dirtiest election on Earth. This will be dirtier than Saddam Hussein getting 100% of all votes.

“I have to ask myself why do the Republicans do everything they can to not get elected and yet think they are going to get elected?”
Those chimps lapped it up when the debate mannequins brought up the idea of invading Iran. They just love the idea of war in some furrin’ country they can’t identify as long as it’s killing people that aren’t white.

Those GOPers running for POTUS are insane, mean-spirited, fat-cat ass-kissing, warmongers! Jesus wouldn’t vote Republican. It’s so important that we get out the vote in 2012 for President Obama, even if he has disappointed some of us. The Repugs will drive us into war, endanger the planet, just to satisfy the greedy war-machine. Whew, I need some decaf.

It’s not just President Obama’s election we need to focus on. We also need to get rid of as many of the do-nothing, obstructionist Congressmembers as possible. That includes Blue Dog Democrats as well as Republicans. Concentrating on just one part of the equation will not help us.

I am not sure where you draw your conclusions from, but, voting GOP is the only way we do not get war, with Ron Paul. Obama yesterday said military options are not off the table.

But Ron Paul wants to dismantle the federal government. Too high price to pay, stripping ourselves bare before the greedy rich and corporations. No thanks

The ronpauls pop up everywhere, because the Great Ronpaul behind the door has a solution for everything: Just Don’t Do It. He’s the nihilist candidate whose only positive function is to split the GOP on election day.

The republicrats will do anything to appease AIPAC/Israel so then can be elected/reelected.
Israel has 200+ nukes with the means to deliver them, and they have the most powerful military in the Middle East. They are more than capable of dealing with any potential threat from Iran.

Most of your criticisms and observations here are true. But there’s one big problem: Iran is building nuclear weapons, has tested ballistic missiles, and has threatened repeatedly to wipe neighbor countries off the map. The logic that Iraq had no WMDs, therefore Iran does not, is silly and not borne out by fact. There are very legitimate reasons to worry about Iran’s nuclear capabilities besides some Christian eschatological theory. Your article doesn’t suggest what should be done — it assume the whole thing is a set-up, which will be a fatal miscalculation.

The world has more to worry about the USA – as Bush’s presidency demonstrates – than about Iran. Iran hasn’t invaded anyone recently, or toppled any regimes. The United States really has no right to complain about Iran having nuclear weapons, if indeed they have them, as long as other countries in the region also have them.
Reynardine
Nov. 14th, 2011 at 1:59 pm
It’s not a setup. Indeed, a nuclear-armed Iran is not a good idea, and neither is a nuclear-armed anything else. But Iran is not a terrorist group. Iran is a country with discrete national borders, great cities, and scores of millions of people. As such, they are held hostage by the same fear that holds every nuclear nation hostage: MAD.
mathazar
Nov. 14th, 2011 at 4:08 pm
Zactly! No Middle Eastern nation can nuke any of their neighbors without destroying themselves in the process.
The only rationale for depriving Iran of nukes is the danger of acquirement by terrorists. And by that logic, we should have gone to war with Pakistan ages ago.

It is a certainty that corporate politicians will go to war if given the slightest chance. It is a certainty that any sovereign nation will not commit suicide, even if it is ruled by theocrats. It is a certainty that an Iran with nuclear weapon capability will not be attacked by ANYONE. It is a certainty that if we go to war with Iran, then the great democratic experiment that is the United States of America, will be no more…
