ABC’s Jake Tapper Gets Busted Pushing Bogus Republican Libya Talking Points
UN Ambassador Susan Rice busted ABC’s Jake Tapper for offering up bogus Republican talking points as facts about the situation in Libya and the Middle East.
Transcript from ABC’s This Week:
TAPPER: Look at this map, if you would. There have been protests around the world over the last several days. And President Obama pledged to repair America’s relationships with the Muslim world. Why does the U.S. seem so impotent? And why is the U.S. even less popular today in some of these Muslim and Arab countries than it was four years ago?
RICE: Jake, we’re not impotent. We’re not even less popular, to challenge that assessment. I don’t know on what basis you make that judgment. But let me — let me point…
TAPPER: It just seems that the U.S. government is powerless as this — as this maelstrom erupts.
RICE: It’s actually the opposite. First of all, let’s be clear about what transpired here. What happened this week in Cairo, in Benghazi, in many other parts of the region…
TAPPER: Tunisia, Khartoum…
RICE: … was a result — a direct result of a heinous and offensive video that was widely disseminated, that the U.S. government had nothing to do with, which we have made clear is reprehensible and disgusting. We have also been very clear in saying that there is no excuse for violence, there is — that we have condemned it in the strongest possible terms.
But let’s look at what’s happened. It’s quite the opposite of being impotent. We have worked with the governments in Egypt. President Obama picked up the phone and talked to President Morsi in Egypt. And as soon as he did that, the security provided to our personnel in our embassies dramatically increased. President Morsi…
TAPPER: It took two days for President Morsi to say anything about this.
RICE: President Morsi has been out repeatedly and said that he condemns this violence. He’s called off — and his people have called off any further demonstrations and have made very clear that this has to stop.
RICE: Now, and — and same, frankly, in Tunisia, in Yemen, and, of course, in Libya, where the government has — has gone out of its way to try to step up security and express deepest remorse for what has happened. We are quite popular in Libya, as you might expect, having been a major partner in their revolution. What transpired outside of our consulate in Benghazi was not an expression of deep-seated anti-Americanism on the part of the Libyan people. Quite the contrary. The counter-demonstrations, the outpouring of sympathy and support for Ambassador Stevens and for the United States, the government of Libya and — and the people on the street saying how pained they are by this, is much more a reflection of the sentiment towards the United States than a small handful of heavily armed mobsters.
TAPPER: That certainly, according to polling, is the case in Libya. Not the case in Egypt. And since you brought up President Morsi, let me try to get some clarification on something. President Obama was asked about the relationship with Egypt on Wednesday, and this is what he said.
Jake Tapper shamelessly echoed the Republican talking point that the Obama administration is impotent in the Muslim world. When Ambassador Rice asked Tapper on what basis he made his judgment, he answered with another Republican talking point about how the United States is powerless.
When Rice correctly pointed out that the people of Libya did not support the killing of Ambassador Stevens, Tapper moved the goalposts to Egypt. The attack that killed four Americans did not occur in Egypt. It happened in Libya, and the only reason why Tapper was so eager to change the subject away from Libya was because he had zero evidence to back up the basis for his questions.
What Jake Tapper did was a prototypical Fox News style interview. He took partisan talking points and used them as the foundation for his questions. That’s how conservative media bias works. When Republican talking points are converted into facts, and the media asks loaded partisan questions, they are infecting the viewers with a built in partisan bias.
As the Romney campaign slips into a death spiral, Jake Tapper’s other motivation was to help Mitt Romney. It is no secret that mainstream media desperately wants to ignore the mounting evidence of the likely November result, and keep this election as close as possible. There are still billions of dollars in political ads and ratings derived revenue out there. The corporate media’s mission is to try to keep the American people interested in what could become a one sided election for as long as possible.
Jake Tapper’s questions were loaded with the word “seems.” He wasn’t asking anything based on fact. He echoed the Republican mantra that feelings trump facts. Questions based on Jake Tapper’s feelings belong on Fox News style propaganda outlet, not on a supposedly neutral Sunday morning public affairs program.

Tapper needs to get it over with and just sign up with Fox News when his contract is up. Any pretense of objectivity is gone…

I saw this interview! Ms. Rice did well, but talking to the wall is difficult to change opinions and talking points like Tapper seems to hold!

Talking to a wall might be more effective than talking to a Fox News Pundit.

Sovereign countries can do damned well what they please. why do we or any other nation think we control them? Neocons need to learn this lesson before we repeat the fiascoes that transpired in Iraq and Afghanistan. Why are these fiascoes? Because we stuck our noses where they weren’t wanted and did not belong. But it is just not our metaphorical noses that got bloodied. Too many of our citizens died and our continuing to do so.

Thank You! That always bothers me too. We have way too many politicians and people in the states that really believe the U.S rules the World. We are always in somebody else’s business trying to tell them what to do and can’t take care of business here.
And I bet from a foreigners point of view, the U.S is just a bunch of Bullies.

*I gotta defend Jake here– he asked tough questions, and Rice answered them. He was right to ask those questions. He’s a reporter, that’s his job. They may or may not be what the Republican party yaps about, but who cares. Reporters are supposed to serve the public trust, they are supposed to act as our surrogates.
*the above statement does not apply to Fox News because they are idiots.

Terry, no. Stating an unproven polemic as fact is not journalism. It is…yeah, polemics.

…. and I also feel that Rice answered those questions thoughtfully. That’s her job too. :)

They can’t make up their minds on this issue either. One minute, they say the President is a secret muslim appeasing them at Israel’s expense. Now, they say that he’s turned the muslim world against us. Which is it? Is he their best friend or their biggest foe (bigger than the idiot before him that started a war over dubious evidence)?

He provided no factual basis for his questions. Wouldn’t it have been better if Tapper would have been honest and prefaced his questions with Republicans believe, or Republicans are saying, and not making it seem like the entire country feels that way, with the Fox Newsesque it seems?

Oh uh… What’s the matter? Is one of your media lap dogs wandering off the reservation just a teeny little bit?

“Media lapdogs”? Idiot Jake Tapper is a water carrying, attack dog for the gop. The only time he’s a lapdog is if he’s talking to a lying republiCON.

“TAPPER: It just seems that the U.S. government is powerless as this — as this maelstrom erupts.”
And what is he suggesting the United States government do? Bomb all the Muslim countries? Kill each & every (evil Muslim) protester? Lock them all up forever & always? What are his profound & practical solutions?

I keep hearing this comment on the news and as you said, what would they have us do? Carpet-bomb the entire Middle East, except for Israel? Kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people? Yes! That is exactly how these neocons think. They want the U.S. to police the world. This entire episode is being blown out of proportion in order to attempt to use it against President Obama. In saying this, I’m not making light of the deaths in Libya of the four Americans killed because he’s already dispatched troops to go after these people. I’m talking about the demonstrations. We’ve increased security at our embassies, so what more do people want PBO to do?

Tapper is NOT entitled to make up his facts and then try to corner someone on faulty premises. I’m just glad Ambassador Rice was able to correct him.

Jake Tapper was: 1. Assuming facts not in evidence. 2. Testifying. As a journalist, he has just earned the Presstitutes’ Gold Lace Thong Panties Award. Wear them in health, Jake!

His entire premise is faulty. The US does not seem impotent, but gee, those are the exact words coming out of Republicans’ mouths, even though they are the ones who held up the Libya mission in the first place with their politicizing of national security. Did Tapper ask about that? Of course not.
The US seemed impotent when we invaded the wrong country and then couldn’t “win” that war. Did we hear ANYTHING ABOUT THAT?

The republican mouthpieces (like Tapper, Gregory, 2 Cheney’s) have come out today to try to save Romney’s hide. I for one am getting sick of all the republican talk about religion – I thought the constitution called for a seperation between church and state.
As an old person who lived through WW2 in England, I saw war up close each morning the damage from air raids, I went to school each day with my gas mask, I hurried to the shelter during air raids. Why do republicans want to start wars, wars that they never expect to serve in. rep King (of New York)who has been leading a witch hunt against moslems, was a bag man for the IRA whose bombing at Brighton paralyzed a girl I went to school with (Margaret Tebbitt) who was married to Margaret Thatchers 2nd in command. King
is an evil hypocrite, if anyone is a terrorist it is him.

Isn’t it amazing how the RWNJ’s completely forget the eleven different attacks on our foreign embassies during the Bush administration? It’s always driven me crazy that they get away with their revisionist history. The attack on 9/11 was turned into “Bush kept the U.S. safe for 7 years”. Sure he did, right AFTER we lost over 3K U.S. citizens to terrorists here in this country. Can anyone imagine what would happen if that had happened on PBO’s watch? They’d be calling for him to be impeached but when it happened in 2001, the country came together. Damn, I hate these RWers and their LIES.

Thanks for this, Jason.. I hope Tapper has gotten word that his stupid shilling as a republicon mouthpiece is evident on the Sunday shows.
I don’t watch those shows..I don’t even have a tv but I would hope somewhere it was brought up what an asshole mitt romney is for disparaging the Embassy Workers in Libya while he was attacking Pres Obama with LIES!?

I watched this train wreck “interview” and was very pleased with Ambassador Rice. Tapper, not so much!
He didn’t even try to hide his partisanship. Hope he goes to Fox Propaganda Network where he’ll fit right in.
I hoped it would be discussed here and, as expected, you did another great job, Jason. Thanks!

Did you see the very end of “This Week” where Tapper answered viewer’s questions? He was asked about his vote to which he answered that he never votes. He alluded to voting investing him in one or the other of the parties and he felt this would color his coverage of the news.

So what you are saying is that anyone who challenges Ms. Rice or the Democratic Talking Points is automatically taking their cue from Republicans and Fox News? Wait. That is exactly what you are saying.
I am an Independent, and don’t really care what anyone wants to call themselves. I think that at the point this Interview took place, that Ms. Rice knew definitely that this was premeditated murder by a terrorists who are out to destabilize the Middle East and embarrass the U.S.
Yet, she still went into HER TALKING points about a Video, knowing this attack was planned days in advance and the Video was nothing but a cover.
You Wrote: “He took partisan talking points and used them as the foundation for his questions. That’s how conservative media bias works. When Republican talking points are converted into facts, and the media asks loaded partisan questions, they are infecting the viewers with a built in partisan bias.”
Which is exactly what you did in this article, and what David Gregory does and Wolf Blitzer and Geo Stephanopoulos, and the Democrats do!!
The media seems to think it is their job to “craft” the story to whatever point they are trying to prove, rather than get to the truth of the matter.
What matters in this case, is that everybody even Mr. Obama’s most ardent supporters, of which I am one, knows he screwed this up, knows that he said Egypt was No Longer an Ally, and then was an ally, and and that his policy with Hillary’s was to not allow ammunition in the arms of the Seals. They are dead, the Ambassador’s dead, and the President went out and raised 1.4 million dollars after hearing the Afghan Base was attacked on Friday. Yet that wasn’t mentioned by you, so you are crafting your story to fit your own aims. Not even those of Democrats!
We are dealing with a President disconnected from reality, and I have to weigh whether I will vote for him again after the Press’ handling of this incident, and obscuring the…

Apparently you like truncating statements just like Republicans do. Would you care to cite the full quote where President Obama said that Egypt was not an ally? I doubt it, because you woudl then have to concede that he did the exact right thing. And it was only after he made the statement you take out of context that Morsi made his apologies and beefed up security.
Secondly, in case you haven’t noticed tnhis isw a partisan site, thus it is perfectly legitimate to have a partisan bias. It is not perfectly legitimate for Gregory, Blitzer or Stephanopolus or Tapper to ask questions with a definite Republcian bias, which they do all the time.
Now, I will say that if the administration policy is not to allow SEALS to have ammunition, I would agree that is wrong. Would you please provide evidence of that claim?
And it is obvious from all your statements that you were never an ardent Obama supporter.
