Advertiser Boycott Sets Off A Talk Radio Earthquake that Leaves Rush Limbaugh Reeling
Lost in all the hubbub about Rush Limbaugh potentially leaving Cumulus Media is the fact that the advertiser boycott of Limbaugh’s show is the reason why talk radio is shaking.
Rush Limbaugh is considering ending his affiliation agreement with Cumulus Media because Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey has blamed the advertiser boycott of Rush’s show for the decline in advertising revenue. A source close to the Limbaugh show told Politico, “It’s a very serious discussion, because Dickey keeps blaming Rush for his own revenue problems. Dickey’s talk stations underperform talk stations owned by other operators in generating revenue by a substantial margin. It’s not a single show issue… it’s a failure of the entire station. And trying to blame Rush for that is not much of a business partnership.” Limbaugh’s feelings are hurt because Dickey had the nerve to point out that calling women sluts is bad for business.
What the mainstream media neglects to mention is that all of Rush’s problems can be traced back to the ongoing success of the advertiser boycott. If people would have let Limbaugh get away with calling Sandra Fluke a slut, the rift between Rush and Cumulus would not be happening right now. The fact of the matter is that the boycott is still costing Cumulus and Rush Limbaugh money. Most of the hundreds of advertisers who left haven’t come back.
Rush Limbaugh’s radio program is less valuable than it was before, and we have the advertiser boycott to thank for this development. Without the people who tweet Limbaugh’s remaining advertisers everyday to remind them that they will be held accountable, none of this would have ever happened.
People often get involved with boycotts, only to lose interest as time goes on. This was the behavior that Limbaugh was initially counting on. He thought that he could ride it out, and eventually things would return to normal. What he didn’t realize was that the Stop Rush boycotters had no intention of going away.
Some on the left have considered the Limbaugh boycott a failure, because he is still on the air. However, the point of this boycott has always been to hold Limbaugh, and everyone who does business with him, financially accountable. From this perspective, the strained relationship between Limbaugh and Cumulus is proof that the boycott is working.
If Limbaugh leaves Cumulus, it will be the biggest shakeup in the history of talk radio. It will have a domino effect in markets across the country, and it all began when a group of people decided that it was time to Stop Rush.

And the boycott must go on. I still see on twitter people calling out advertisers. Rush has to go.
The same needs to be done with the NRA

Boycotts do work. I was reading that walmart has noticed a big drop in revenue, and I would submit that means the boycott is working as we can also see from ‘rush l’ boycott. Everyone needs to keep up the good work and to always remember that although the ‘masses’ might not have the wealth of the 1% and large corporations, we have the size of our number in our favor. When the masses boycott a corporation or in this matter a person, it works

Rush is neither entertainment or news.
He simply makes things up
(environmentalists caused the BP explosion)
insults (Take the bone out of your nose) and calls it commentary.
He insults 1/2 of America -women and says feminism only exist because ugly women can’t find husbands.
His the epitome of a bully.

Excellent. Economic warfare is our new civil war and this battle is an example to all of us. Citizens need to do the same with every cent we have to spend. Wisely, aware of who owns the companies, buying only from those you like. Don’t buy Rush Limbaughs. Unless you like him and want to give him money. ~Wendy Moore

There are some who still think Sandra Fluke’s testimony was all about her wanting free birth control so she could have all the sex she wanted. Her testimony went far beyond that and I think that’s why the backlash against Rush was so immediate – and effective. Those who were paying attention knew what she was really testifying about; they knew that what Rush said was a lie and that he went far beyond just talking about birth control. Nor did he just offend young women with his words – he offended young women, old women, women in between, as well as many men. He might have been able to withstand it if it were just young women, but he was an equal opportunity offender on this one and it nearly destroyed his little radio show.
We need to keep up the pressure on his advertisers; we cannot let up. This man is repugnant and a liar, and he is as much to blame for the division in this country as anyone.
Clock out Rush – your 15 minutes are up.

A couple of points here, yes, the boycott is working, it is the only thing radio understands (money)having said that, Lew Dickey is also the scum of the earth and treats hs people like shit, his company is one of the worst in the industry to work for and he is blaming his failure as a business man on rush. Two, this has happened before and is the reason that howard stern is on satellite radio. The buyers decide and when the orders come over saying ROS, no rush limbaugh, management pays attention. Over the course of the years, many shows have been strangled by the buy around.

He is just a small but unfortunately very vocal part of the entire problem with our country. Big business thinking they own the world, and owe regular people nothing. Corporate profits that should be plowed back into companies & employees to make better, stronger, happier companies! I’m glad this is hitting him in the pocketbook. Now if they would only get rid of him!

“Dickey’s talk stations underperform talk stations owned by other operators in generating revenue by a substantial margin. It’s not a single show issue… it’s a failure of the entire station.”
That’s because it’s all nothing but right wing hate talk. People tend to get sick of trolls after a while.

This is the same approach that should be taken against other American groups and their leaders who rely on untruths and fear to get their message out to a vulnerable American public. The NRA comes to mind. Reasonable investors need to look at where their money is being invested and be sure their dollars are not aligned with these fear mongers.

It would be nice if there were one site that keeps track of boycotts, with synopses, so people can make better buying decisions more quickly.
I suspect there are right-wing websites for this purpose.
Anybody?

just wondering if you’ve ever fact checqued rush Limbaugh, et al?
there have been books written on the fallacies on the show. logic and rush Limbaugh comes to mind. every time I hear rush argue I have to ask myself what is he not mentioning, that would disprove what he is saying.
it is always a good idea to fact checque things from whatever source you get them. good journalism can be verifiesd from reputable outside sources. rush cannot.

Could you please expound on these ‘truths’ that only Rush Limbaugh provides? Do you have a few examples?

So, Ron S it’s true that Sandra needed more birth control because she wanted to have more sex, because she is a slut? That is TRUTH is it? Do a little research, would you? That is as ridiculous as most of the venom he spews. Limbaugh doesn’t speak the truth. He and others like him (Beck) admit they, themselves, don’t believe half of the ‘information’ they promote. It’s all about getting attention and ultimately money. It is a shame that so many people fall for his shenanigans.

Even though we know that Ron will not be back because he is a coward, Ron should know that he did not check all the facts. Number one the woman did not want him to pay for tons of sex that she needs. This proves that Ron knows absolutely nothing about what is going on. He is under the belief that a woman wants the government to pay for her birth control. This is a common fallacy among conservatives who listen to Rush. Birth control would’ve been paid for out of the group policies that the healthcare provider gives. By saying that the woman wants tons of sex or needs tons of sex we are certainly faced with the fact that Ron listens to Rush and believes everything Rush says. He has never fact checked the fact checkers. The fact that he had no idea who was supposed to pay for the birth control indicates he is incapable of such types of research

Shiva he obviously also listens to Michael Savage. The liberalism is a mental disorder is the title of one of Michael Weiners book.
Ron is steeped in his hatred and vitriol he hears on the right wing media entertainment complex radio. He is incapable of being reasoned with oor able to have an intelligent conversation. The troll Ron happened upon here to stir up us liberals and all he did was get smacked down with facts. But again Ron is incapable of recognizing facts because he is a member of the extreme right wing cult in this country who have gone insane. One day all that hatred is going to cause Ron to have a nervous breakdown. Which might be a good thing for him. I see a white straight jacket in his future along with many other crazed right wingers. Maybe he can seek help under the affordable care act.

Sandra’s testimony never was about birth control so she could have lots of sex. She was testifying about the need for the birth control medication for OTHER medical needs. There are many women who take birth control pills to help with other gynecological issues. And, as others have pointed out, it wasn’t about the government paying for the medication.

@Ron S. I really don’t care if he quits or is fired he just needs to go. I guess it should not be a stunning thing but as a sheeple of Rush’s it is dumbfounding that in this day and age of information that you think one needs more birth control pills in order to have lots of sex. Get a simple book on birth control. At least you may not appear to be as dumb as you sound. I use the word dumb which is not to be informed instead of stupid which is to know better and still spout the crap.

interesting comment. except for one small thing. facts are facts. they can’t be made up otherwise they are not facts. I can understand how, if you’ve been fed a steady diet of misinformation you’d think facts could be sold to the highest bidder. btw, they can’t, because they are facts. what can be bought and sold are opinions, which may or may not have any basis in facts. lost ya yet?
try this one on for size: 2+2 always equals 4. that is a proven fact. which makes the statement 2+2=5 for certain values of 2 an opinion, and a falsehood at that, because 2 is an absolute. note the difference.
as I said before it is important to fact checque with reputable sources. otherwise you wind up like you are, distrustful of any and all information that doesn’t fit your bias, and confused as to what a fact actually is…..

The good news is that Limbaugh is (all but) gone. The bad news is that nobody is happier about it than the Republican party.
The fact is that the biggest friends the Democrats have are the spewers of hate talk radio/television because it is they who are forcing the Republicans into more and more extreme positions. When one of them bites the dust, it might make America just a bit more sane but it also takes away just a bit of the Democrats’ advantage.

This is what I expected. I’m a hater, I’m an extremist, I’m a coward, I’m ignorant, I need therapy, I need a straight jacket, I’m this, I’m that, blaw, blaw, blaw. The name calling, the hate speech and such is all here, from all of YOUR posts, not mine. This is why I don’t want to be here. Regarding the Fluck case, which seems to be the only thing you have on Rush after two decades of broadcasting, the bottom line is she wants somebody else to pay for her contraception. I did not get this FACT from Rush, I listened to her speech. Did any of you? The other FACT is that so many of you are responding to my original post and guess what? The moderator, who also commented on this post, thought it was necessary to hide that post due to “low comment rating”. Really? Isn’t that comment what started all this? You have to click to see it. You didn’t get anything from her speech. She never said that she expected you to pay for her birth control because she wanted more sex. You got that straight from Limbaugh. You had no idea that you or the government does not pay for the birth control. The healthcare providers do. Your whole entire speech is nothing but bull.
You are a fraud. You have no common sense. And you are typical of a conservative who could care less about reality.
As far as the only thing on rush in two decades, that’s hilarious. Were you just born?
Another thing you don’t know, is that the WordPress plug-in that is used to count up and down votes automatically hides your post when you get so many down votes. I hope this is a lesson to you to never ever again talk about things that you know absolutely nothing about

Good points all, Ron S. Limbaugh’s use of the word “slut” was unnecessary and wrong. He apologized. Case closed. How much sex Sandra Flukes wants to have is not the point. I couldn’t care less and nobody else should care about it either. The point is that she, and others like her, feel it’s the government’s, or my, obligation to pay for it. That’s an unbelievable concept to me, but that’s the kind of people we have in this country. I know there are a lot of idiots in this country, but to find a good number of them all at one site is to hard to resist. Now if I could only find a drone that would work on a website.

For those sick of Rush and his ilk, this would be a good time to take a small action.
Take this opportunity to let your local stations know via email how much you are not enjoying the ‘all politics all the time’ formats. They may be particularly receptive to your email at this time.
My station has Rush (3 freaking hours a day! UGH!) Hannity, that freaky-freak Levin and a local yahoo named Michael Barry (recently popped for a hit-and-run after drinking at a local gay bar- LOL!).
If you are sick of Rush and his type, let them know.

“Some on the left have considered the Limbaugh boycott a failure, because he is still on the air.”
Indeed. These same individuals decry every progressive effort at incremental progress as “failure” mostly because they 1) have the attention span of a tsetse fly 2) are themselves too lazy to roll up their sleeves and put in the long-term effort it takes to produce change.
Admittedly, it is a simpler proposition to bang away at the keyboard night and day complaining about life’s generic suckitude. Though how that changes things for the better is and always has been beyond me.
I applaud the Rush Busters for sticking to the noble effort of ending Rush. “The Left” could take a lesson.
