Debbie Wasserman Schultz Fires Back At Allen West

Personal insults and ad hominem attacks are nothing new coming from the new crop of Republicans in the U.S. House. Unprofessional behavior seems to be the norm both there and on the state and local level. They act like what they are: schoolyard bullies.

The one thing they don’t want to talk about are the issues, so they resort to character assassination, schoolyard insults and misogynistic or racist behavior. And we get comments like of Rep. Allen West (R-FL), who Tweeted that supporters of President Obama are a threat to the gene pool.

But that’s not all the dirt from Rep. West. Just last night, West sent an email to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) (and house leaders of both parties) that demanded she “shut the heck up” and in which he called her despicable, as well as accusing her of not being a lady. Why? Because she stood up for Medicare and Social Security.

This was what Wasserman Schultz said that earned her the hate-filled response of Rep. West:

“Incredulously, the gentleman from Florida, who represents thousands of Medicare beneficiaries, as do I, is supportive of this plan that would increase costs for Medicare beneficiaries — unbelievable from a member from South Florida. It slashes Medicaid and critical investments essential to winning the future in favor of protecting tax breaks for Big Oil, millionaires and companies who ship American jobs overseas.”

West hadn’t bothered to be present but he apparently believes nobody should be able to level criticism at him if he is not there:

Subject: Unprofessional and Inappropriate Sophomoric Behavior from Wasserman-Schultz

Look, Debbie . . . let me make myself perfectly clear . . . you are the most vile, unprofessional, and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up. . . You have proven repeatedly that you are not a Lady, therefore, shall not be afforded due respect from me!”

This is the Republican response to the issues – childish insults. Where is Rep. West’s argument in favor of punishing the middle class, poor, and elderly to benefit the rich? If this is the best argument West has, perhaps until he has something substantive to say on the issues he should be the one to “shut the heck up”.

The Palm Beach Post gives Wassserman Schultz spokesman Jonathan Beeton’s response:

“I don’t think that Congressman West is upset at the Congresswoman, but rather with the fact that she highlighted that he and other Republicans are once again trying to balance the budget on the backs of seniors, children and the middle class. As someone who lives in Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz’s Congressional district, Congressman West knows that we have hundreds of thousands of seniors in South Florida who have paid into Medicare throughout their lives and now rely on this program to keep them healthy and active.”

The West camp claims Wasserman Schultz took a “cheap shot” but I think it’s clear from where the cheap shot actually originated.
