Americans For Prosperity Fake an Attack On Their Tent at Michigan Right to Work Rally
Prepare to be confronted with yet another example of right wing deliberate deception. Today at the Right to Work protest in Michigan, an Americans for Prosperity tent came down with people inside of it. Naturally, Fox was there to capture the scene and AFP were quick to blame it on violent union supporters. Also, Breitbart was there to blame the tent falling on violent union supporters, with a video that doesn’t start until well after the melee (of course).
As you have learned by now (you’re quicker than the media), all is not always what it seems in Right Wing world.
A protester of the anti-union law passed today, Tom Duckworth, saw a man he’d spoken to earlier in the tent, wearing NRA garb, kick the AFP tent poles from the inside of the tent. Duckworth thought they must be getting ready to leave, until he realized there were people inside the tent. So, basically, a person described by Duckworth as “clearly a member of Americans for Propserty” kicked the tent down and then AFP blamed it on the unions.
December 11, 2012: Tom Duckworth explains what he saw at the Americans for Prosperity tent earlier today. Watch here via ProgressMichigan:
Duckworth says that when the tent came down, people cheered, but nobody “rushed the tent” for about 30 seconds. Sure, they cheered – AFP are the people funding the death of a globally recognized human right. After about 30 seconds, the protesters did trample the fallen tent in their pleasure, cheering its demise.
However, tragically, there were people inside the tent, which the protesters didn’t realize right away. Duckworth says as soon as they realized that, they chased people off of the tent. He says he backed away to make room, and was told it was cut open and they got people out of the tent. Five minutes later, the mounted police showed up to clear the area. (Question: Would the AFP people have cut the union members out of a tent if the situation had been reversed?)
A commenter (av8tor17b ) concurs with Duckworth, writing, “I was physically there this morning and talked to the AFP people before the tents came down. This gentleman is correct- it was a guy with a “freedomworks” button, who was standing IN the AFP tent this morning, who caused the tent to fall.”
Duckworth agreed that it was an attempt by AFP to provoke violence or take advantage of the situation in order to blame the protesters for the tent going down, since AFP were clearly outnumbered (that happens when your cause is not a real grassroots movement).
AFP tried everything to get pro-right to work people to come out to the rally including using their Koch dollars to bribe the unwashed and deluded Fox News masses with free food, drink, and $25 gift cards.
Of course the press was there before the mounted police (who needs the mounted police by the paid instigators of the law that’s causing the ruckus, eh?), and so another meme is created and fulfilled for the plutocrats and their PR outlet at Fox News.
This has all of the usual shades of the secret Walker audio tape in which he discussed planting disruptors to blame on unions in Wisconsin.
No one is claiming the protesters are perfect, but this has all of the eerily familiar hallmarks of right wing propaganda. AFP kicked their own tent in on their own supporters.
Then they blamed the fallout on the unions. A Breitbart video was there just in time to capture the resulting melee and suggest it all started with the unions. For some reason, their videos never start off at the beginning or proceed without edits.

What a crock of shit this guy is. It isn’t just Brietbart, but numerous local news cameras and plenty of individual, private cell phone videos.
Yeah, I know exactly what happened. Before the tent was torn down, I and 1/2 dozen others were pushed back into the tent by hundreds of thugs. I was inside when it came down. there were also at least one women and a guy in a wheel chair.
I got out with a few bruises. Maybe I should have been wearing my hardware but probably would have been in Zimmerman’s shoes if i had to shoot one of them.
We faked knocking our tent down????? Yeah, that happens all the time at tea party rallies. This was typical of the unions. For this asshole to comes out and make up a bullshit story is ludicrous. Watch one of the dozens of videos. Brietbart wasn’t the only camera rolling. Hey, i saw a lot of union guys with videos. Did one of them happen to get the “full” video of us knocking our own tent down? When will you post it? HA!

Lot of people lucky to be alive today after many thugs gave most union members a black eye- and they can thank AFP members for the restraint from justifiable homicide. I know of several people carrying concealed weapons who were threatened and feared injury- which is the legal requirement to open fire in self defense. But more importantly, an errant bullet fired by a terrified victim could’ve exploded one or both of the two 100 lb propane tanks sitting next to each tent, which would’ve instantly killed 100s and injured thousands more. The thugs knocked the tents down, and they did more for the RTW than everything I’ve done in the past 2 yrs in support of it. Like it or not, what the unions put on display yesterday is exactly what companies think of unions, and now the public does too- whether it’s accurate or not, and you can thank those union morons for furthering support for RTW across the entire nation. You guys fucked the entire nation out of ever having a viable union movement, because even when we want to organize against a bad company, we’re now gonna have to overcome this with our coworkers who will vote against letting a union represent us. Thanks guys! You’re nothing more than mindless idiots who cut your own throats, and gave people extra motivation to kill project labor agreements that cost taxpayers extra and favor unions. You fucked yourselves again and in a big way, the same way you brought all of this on by trying to pass Prop 2 in Michigan. King sized idiots, and you screwed everyone who needs and wants a union. BRILLIANT!!!

“King sized idiots, and you screwed everyone who needs and wants a union. BRILLIANT!!!”
Those who want and need a union can opt in…those who don’t had no choice prior.
Is this reality? You are forced to do something and it’s “choice” but you are given a choice and it’s a bad thing?
Good grief…perhaps you should realize that not everyone in the world wants all of their money getting funneled to democrat coffers…
Democrat way: give money to unions, or else!
You guys are truly pathetic to complain about this…the economy will go up in Michigan and you people only care about “fairness”…how has it worked out for you thus far?
Shiva (Moderator)
Dec. 12th, 2012 at 4:52 pm
as Republicans always say, you are not forced to do anything you always have a choice. So you are not forced to do something. However if you do join a union your dues day for a product. That product is being able to have some say in your wages, your working environment, your benefits and other things. And to say that all their money goes to the Democrats is utterly ridiculous because unions do give to both. You’ll remember that the Wisconsin police union supported Gov. Walker who turned around and screwed them.
Only 20% of the people in Michigan belong to unions. To say that their economy will go up because of this is pretty ludicrous and typical of Republicans who cannot think but only repeat what they are told. Your rant is absolutely ridiculous. The choice that you think they are getting once the unions are gone is much lower wages. Something that you are certainly proud of but probably will not partake in.

Let me tell you the reality of the “choice”.
Someone will even mention “Union”, and will be fired on the spot. Anyone who even hints that they might join a union will be told that if they join, the owner will physically throw them out and have them blacklisted – and do so.
I live in a “Right to Work” state and that’s the reality. The law does nothing.
Oh, and here’s another reality. Right to work really means “Owners have the right to treat their employees however they wish”.
I have the literal physical scar to show for it. 7 stitches to close my upper lip – for interrupting a non-business conversation about angels because the man had a minor emergency in his shop.
He then had two, and was rather unhappy with me for creating the second (if he hadn’t slugged me he wouldn’t have had to take me to the doctor). His rule was that you never interrupted him and had to politely ask permission to speak.
And if it wasn’t for the Goddamned churches I attended, I’d have sued the bastard. “You never sue a fellow Christian, you take it to the minister” was the rule… and they both were more concerned that I wasn’t submissive enough to my “betters”. The pastor (who I think had had a “talk” with the owner before we met) insisted that I had to stay working for the bastard AND be more submissive and obedient.
By the time I ripped my soul loose from their hell-spawned clutches (the damned church), it was too late to sue.

I was there today – standing near the AFP tent…they had a few people (security) around their tent adjusting poles, etc.. I saw no one attempt to destroy or mess with the AFP tent at all. The only person I saw touch the tent was an AFP security person who was adjusting a stake. They had their tents on the lawn of the Capitol (thanks to the DeVos family) which in my opinion was dangerous with 15,000 protesters on the lawn, there could of been serious injury to someone who could have tripped over the stakes. I saw possibly 4 AFP people.

I was there and what I saw before the tent came down was a crazy lady trying to unhitch the outside guide straps that were attached to ground stakes. Union demonstrators pulled her away and re-tightened the straps. And just before the tent came down, several AFP people walked out of the tent, one of them, a young man in a suit, was screaming in the faces of some of the union demonstrators. Draw your own conclusions.

AFP had reserved the capitol steps many days in advance of December 11. Coincidentally, December 11 happened to be the day that the Republican controlled legislature decided to have its final vote on this entire RTW legislation, but I’m sure there was no coordination between AFP and the Republicans (insert sarcastic modicon here). And when we arrived there yesterday morning, one AFP person was sitting on the capitol steps to hold his “rally,” which legally prevented union people from being able to speak there. And the two tents, which covered quite a bit of ground, had only a few people inside; I saw only two women sitting in the north tent. So this minimal AFP presence was orchestrated, IMO, to appear as if there were a pro-RTW crowd, notwithstanding the nearly 13,000 union people who showed up. I’m also convinced the AFP was there with the hope of a confrontation in ordered to attempt to discredit the thousands of us who demonstrated peacefully against RTW. Ron Douglas’s invective of “Violent Domestic Terrorism” is revealing enough.

This past year, Texas had 4 of the Top Ten cities in the country that had positive population growth. Austin (#4) grew by over 30,000 people. Heavily regulated and taxed states like California and Michigan are deflating as people exit for states like Texas. Unemployment here is well below the Nation’s average.
If you live in Michigan and work in an environment of all of this incessant drama, can’t stand working for dog’s wages in a physically demanding job, then spend your evenings in online computer programming classes, learn some basic skills, and come to Texas and get a great job, with great pay and outstanding benefits. And, you don’t have to join a union to get this great pay and benefits.

Iowa… right to work State Ranked 3rd
Debt per capita: $5,138 (6th)
Unemployment rate: 6.8% (8th)
Home price change (2006-2009): 8.3% (22nd)
Median household income: $48,044 (26th)
Iowa ranks 7th in education, with more than 90% of 25-year-olds having completed high school or the state equivalent. It is also sixth lowest in debt per capita and has the third lowest rate of citizens without health insurance, at 8.6%. While the Hawkeye State may be known for its corn fields, its economy is meaningfully supported by The University of Iowa, which accounts for one in every 30 jobs in the state. Today, the state ranks eighth lowest in the U.S. for unemployment.
Michigan Ranked 47th
Debt per capita: $7,547 (28th)
Unemployment rate: 13.1% (49th)
Home price change (2006-2009): -13.8% (46th)
Median household income: $45,255 (34th)
Michigan, the home to America’s devastated auto industry, has the second worst unemployment rate in the country, at 13.8%. The state is one of only six to be rated by S&P as having a credit rating of AA- or worse, likely due to the state’s unemployment crisis, as well as high crime rates and one of the worst drops in occupied home values in the country.

No one should be forced to pay a union that does not need one. Unions object that right-to-work is actually “right-to-freeload.” Unions do not Have to represent people who do not pay dues. The National Labor Relations Act does not mandate unions exclusively represent all employees, but permits them to electively do so. Under the Act, unions can also negotiate “members-only” contracts that only cover dues-paying members. They do not have to represent other employees.
Even if they were freeloading it would be no different than the the people who suckle at the teet of the entitlements of the federal Govt. The democratic party way eh?

Anyone who threatens a group of unarmed people with talk of “hardware” shouldn’t have a gun to begin with. You arm yourself because you fear for your life. Not because you’re a coward that is afraid to take an asskicking. This is exactly the kind of event you DON’T want a gun. Too many frayed nerves. No clear heads. Too much emotion. I’ve been around guns all my life. My father used to tell me, “If your going to pull a gun, someone had better be getting shot.” in other words, you don’t take pulling a gun lightly. You don’t threaten. If the gun comes out of the holster you better be in a situation where you have no other choice but to kill someone. A right to work rally is not one of those situations. These tough guy wanna bes think a tent collapsing is an offense warranting death?! Grow up! If for some reason you feel that you need to go be an agitator at a rally, you need to expect those people to give you a hard time. And if you expect to need a gun at such an event, you should STAY THE HELL HOME!
