America’s Choice: Why Obama in 2012?
By: Hrafnkell HaraldssonMay. 30th, 2012more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson

Barack Obama may not be everything we thought he was going to be when we elected him, but few would disagree that he has been a game-changer in many (if not all) ways, after eight years of the catastrophic Bush administration. He has put the brakes on the worst excesses of that administration,
To name just a few.
Yes, we still have the Patriot Act; we still have the Faith Based Initiative that is an affront to the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause; yes, we still have a federal government that spies on its citizens and an Executive Branch that is too powerful. But we also have an executive branch that has been stymied repeatedly and for four years by an obstructionist House of Representatives and by widespread abuse of filibustering.
You can argue that Obama did not keep all his promises; admittedly, he didn’t. But he kept many (36% of them according to PolitiFact’s Obameter, with another 26% in the works), and many of those he has not kept (14% broken according to the Obameter and 11% compromised) he was not able to keep because of lack of cooperation from a legislative branch that has refused to compromise, indeed, to recognize the legitimacy of his presidency.
Disillusioned progressives ask where their change is and conservatives repeat the refrain, “How do you like your change now?” But look not only at what Obama has accomplished, the change he has wrought, but look for a moment your alternatives: Republicans label Obama a radical extremist but that’s because the only thing still to the right of the GOP is the Nazi Party, and that not by much, given the appeal the GOP has for right-wing militias and racist groups and fundamentalists calling for the establishment of concentration camps for gays and lesbians.
Those in doubt about what Obama has accomplished might wish to consult sites like whatthefuckhasobamadoneso… (PG version here) or Obama’s Achievement Center.
Yes, we could have had more, but we could also have had a whole helluva lot less. Think about a McCain/Palin presidency for a moment and ask yourself it that would have been preferable. Think about Romney presidency and ask yourself if that sounds any better, whoever might end up being his running mate. Think about two long wars in the Middle East, thousands of American dead and then think about another war – against Iran this time – and thousands more American dead – and for what?
So far, Obama has kept diplomacy on the table as an option, and international sanctions – everything short of war in fact; no Republican president would ever hold back from making like Dubya just pushing the button. None of them – or their children – are going to be shot at, after all.
Republicans call Obama a Muslim though according to the Constitution it wouldn’t matter if he were, since religious tests are banned (Article VI, paragraph 3); they say he’s a socialist too but that also is neither illegal nor even immoral, and he has been accused of being an anti-colonialist Kenyan of all things, as though being opposed to colonialism is a bad thing from a citizen of a country that was founded in opposition to colonialism.
Speaking of citizens, they accuse him of not being a citizen even though there is not a shred of evidence that he is not and no matter how often the authenticity of his birth certificate is verified. They simply oppose Obama so badly that they are willing to strip Americans of their voting rights so that they cannot vote for him, or to flirt with fantasies of keeping Obama off state ballots so that nobody can vote for him – or both.
As yourselves: if the Republicans will recognize no limits in defeating Obama and making him a single-term president, why would you not want to vote for him in 2012? Isn’t that argument enough in favor?
In perhaps the mildest and least-offensive attack, Obama has even been called a moderate Republican (by Ezra Klein in the Washington Post). But isn’t a moderate Republican far more appealing than an extremist Republican? If he is a moderate Republican, he is the only one in existence and we ought to safeguard that existence. Most of us old enough to remember have nothing against moderate Republicans. Moderate Democrats and moderate Republicans governed this country together and successfully from WWII until recent years.
There are many ways to look at this election:
There are many reasons to choose Obama in 2012. I have listed only a few of them here. I am sure you can find many more if you sit down to think about what’s at stake in the upcoming election. Rest assured whatever choice you ultimately make, it will be the most important choice Americans have made since the election of Abraham Lincoln.

I’m posting this link yet again:

This article describes concisely what the cadre backing Rott Mimney means to do with our country- our foreign policy, especially- if they seize power. High on their agenda is a return to conquest and torture.
A Romney victory, unless it were countered by a Democratic sweep of both houses of Congress and most statehouses, would lead to pure and perpetual war abroad and pure and perpetual peonization at home. John Dean, in “Conservatives Without Conscience”, said that when fascism came to America, it would be pious, anti-black, and anti-Muslim. He did not think it was imminent when he wrote that, but that was almost seven years ago. Look out, John, and look out, all of us: it’s right outside our kitchen door, just waiting for us to open it.

It’s a typo. I omitted the “r” from “declaring”. There is no “edit” function here, so please amend.

the biggest problem that Obama faces as far as being reelected is the complete filling of the GOP ranks with misinformation. He has to reach those people who will fill for Romney and at the same time vote to have their rights stripped away as workers and Americans. Romney is making some very good speeches, none of which are accurate. Any veteran who supports Romney hasn’t read the Ryan plan that Romney supports. And a GOP voter who supports Romney supports adding $10 trillion to the deficit according to the experts. And it’s just the Ryan plan is implemented it’s almost 2,000,000,000,000.
The efforts against Obama are vast in this country. We have to make sure he wins

So put on your walking shoes, flip flops, hiking boots and walk door to door where you are. Talk with people in your area unless they are already preparing to vote for him – hit the undecideds, use your best calm presentation, and TALK, WALK, CALL, GOTV for this president.
Money cannot outpace boots on the ground IF we all do it. I am, and I did it in the 60s and 70s so I’m a whole lot older now. If I can and you are able, DO IT!

Just a word about this gay thing, I read that a Kansas (where else) pastor thinks the government should kill the gays.
I would urge anyone who reads this to do some research on the christian church, around the year 1200 there was a rite of the church in which two men would be joined in marriage, it was celebrated just like any other marriage. neocons think the christian church was originated 250 years ago!

You might not have noticed this yet but gays to the religious right what Jews were to the Nazis. There are very strong connections between fascism and the Church. Although he is usually portrayed as an atheist or some kind of pagan, back in 1933, Hitler was very much of a religious crusader and the Catholics gave their support to him and to Mussolini.
Everybody needs to know the truth about the so-called war on religion and why secularists have every right to be suspicious.

Well, not exactly. They are what gays were to the Nazis, and Muslims are what the Jews were to the Nazis. Though the truth is, all of us who don’t fit in with their scheme become what Jews were to the Nazis. On the other hand, women willing to adapt- nice, white, Christian women, I mean- become what Aryan women were to the Nazis: servicers of the “right” kinds of men and breeders of “right” kinds of children.

This president is exactly what I voted for. Now that is a change I can believe in.
He has done or tried to do everything he campaigned on and has not under promised at all.
No he is not the screaming progressive in some area’s that I would like but I never projected that onto him in the first place.
When I think of our last several presidents and the fact that this one has done more, under very trying circumstances, than any two presidents combined I am convinced this man may have saved our country. All I need do is watch an interview of McCain complaining that we have not invaded or dropped any bombs yet (on who depends on the week) to remind me of certain the disaster that a GOP presidency would have brought.
My surprise is that he is actually running for a second term. Never have I seen a president so left hanging in the wind by his own party. This man got left at the alter on day one by the party and the people.
I am not sure we deserve his exceptional skills but I am thankful every day that we got this guy to run our country.

“I am not sure we deserve his exceptional skills but I am thankful every day that we got this guy to run our country.” ditto, Tim.
I am a registered independent voter and I stand firmly behind Barack Obama. With eternal hope for a prosperous future for my country, I will cast my ballot with a heart filled with pride for my President.

This is the best comment here, period.
I didn’t vote for President Obama because I thought he could snap his fingers and fix everything in two seconds. I knew that the task he faced could not be finished in one term.
I voted for him because he was the right man for the job. True, some “progressives” have tried to depict alternate histories where things could have been okay under McCain/Palin (and some might try with Romney and his running mate), but let’s face it–he, Obama, has done a lot, even with the resistance from Congress and especially the GOP.
He’s a smart man and a _good_ man. He’s being a pragmatist and taking the long view.
Maybe we do not deserve his exceptional skills, like you said, but man, I’m sure glad we have them. And hopefully, come November, more people will see that.

I agree with you Tim,100%.And no,I didn’t get my pony but then again,I didn’t ask for one.All I asked was that President Obama do his best, which is just what he has done.
I also agree with the other repliers. When your OWN party doesn’t have your back, what can you do?That is just one of the reasons I send my donations directly to the Obama campaign and not to the DCCC.I do not want one penny of my money going to these folks who will not back our President.
I will gladly vote for President Obama in November.

I have supported Barack Obama from day one. I have never doubted our president. I have commented on many websites defending our president over and over again.

Sigh – No. The office of faith based initiatives it WAY different from Bush – it no longer will permit one thin dime to go to proselytizing as Bush overlooked or encouraged. The work and funding are ALL for social services, NO preaching. THAT is change I definitely believe in!
