With 8% Approval Anthony Weiner Is America’s New Most Hated Politician
By: Guest ContributorJun. 14th, 2011more from Guest Contributor
It takes a lot to be even less popular than Sarah Palin and Rick Scott, but according to a new PPP survey Rep. Anthony Weiner and his 8% approval rating have done just that.
As if Democrats needed any more ammo in their quest to extract Anthony Weiner from the House of Representatives, PPP found that Weiner’s unfavorable rating has hit 70%. Sixty percent of those surveyed thought Weiner should resign, and only 25% thought he should stay. Weiner’s highest favorability rating was with those who self-identified as very liberal (18%), but even a majority of this group (51%) thought that Weiner should resign. Interestingly, only 34% of those who consider themselves somewhat liberal thought that he should step down.
Weiner’s unfavorability rating is lower with women (69%) than it is with men (72%), but more men (66%) than women (55%) believe that he should resign. One of Rep. Weiner’s rare bases of support is with African Americans. By a margin of 42%-37% African Americans believe that Anthony Weiner should not resign. Weiner is least popular with Hispanics. Sixty seven percent of who think he should leave office. (64% of whites think Weiner needs to go too).
To put these numbers into context, Sarah Palin the long time most hated national politician in America usually carries around a 60% unfavorable rating. New low approval rating champion, Florida Gov. Rick Scott is 21 points more popular than Weiner. Democrats are visions of a 2012 campaign where Anthony Weiner is tied to every candidate, and their shot at taking back the House goes up in smoke.
I have been critical of the Democratic leadership for not being honest about why Weiner has to go. They keep making excuses about family, and what not. An eight freaking percent national approval rating is the real reason why they keep pushing Weiner to resign.
A 2010 poll found that John Edwards’ approval rating was at 15%. Does Anthony Weiner really deserve to be less popular than John Edwards? Probably not, but this is the world that we live in.
Let’s this be a lesson to all male politicians out there. C**k shots will kill your approval ratings. You may think your d**k is awesome, but the American people do not approve of your sharing.
The lies were even worse than the pics. Anthony Weiner could have survived the pics, but being unfaithful to your wife and lying about it to the entire country, on top of the pictures will get you an 8% approval rating.
Anthony Weiner didn’t break any laws, or even have real sex, but he is now the most hated politician in America. Such is life in the scandal and sex obsessed 24 hour cable news cycle.
Rep. Weiner should be a cautionary tale for all men. If you want to be popular and keep your job, keep in your pants, off your camera, and don’t lie.

Actually, Anthony Weiner should be a lesson to everyone on the planet with a camera. The minute you give a picture of yourself to someone else, it is no longer your own. You don’t have to be a member of Congress or a celebrity to suffer negative consequences from a mistake like that.

Is this for his district? Because if it is not, who cares? They are the ones that matter. And look at Senator Vitter.

Phil, You are exactly correct. Plus, when was the last time we saw a congressman or senator actually fighting for the American people? Okay, there are a few: Gillibrand, Sanders and a few others. Unfortunately we lost Alan Grayson. What Weiner did in this incident was definitely unwise, but any one of those women could have cancelled him out at a moment’s notice if they thought he was being inappropriate or they could have erased the photos and written back to him that that wasn’t the part of him they were interested in, but six of them preserved his stupid photos? Why? To get on the money train?
The Dem pols should have just told him to quit it and get on with our important business, of which we have much. What’s up with them focusing on such a stupid thing? When are they going to stand up for us “little people”? I’m still waiting and have been for a long, long time.
Sheesh! Get on with the business of this country you people we elected!

I think that goes for all women too. Lets not forget that 50% of the unfaithful are women. NO one in office should ever jeopardize their careers like this. Let that silliness wait till you are out of office. The country admired Weiner for being so stand up. and now thats all gone.
Also remember the republican SS will stop at nothing to discredit you

“Hated”, “unpopular”, “disapproval”, “unfavorable”? Which of these terms best describes how polled Americans now feel about Rep. Weiner?
For myself — and I consider myself as pretty liberal when it comes to how people conduct their personal lives — I am “disapproving”, with an “unfavorable” opinion regarding Rep. Weiner’s ability to continue adequate representation of his constituents and effective participation in House committee work.
I don’t “hate” him. And I really don’t give a damn whether he’s popular or unpopular. That’s so Hollywood.

He doesn’t deserve to be hated. He deserves to be treated. His recklessness, in the face of what he knew to be right-wing sharks out there and how he knew they could use it against him, is disimpressive. It is also the sign of a psychiatric disorder, but whether it disqualifies him for public service is mainly a decision for his constituents.

As am I. And the Democrat’s reactions have done nothing positive to help their constituents or this country one single bit. They should have said, “Cut it out Weiner. That was stupidly juvenile. We need you to get back to speaking up for our constituents (because we’re too chicken to do it, so we still need a loud-mouth like you to do it for us).”

Why do people mistake being a loud mouth for being an effective shaper of public policy? What exactly has Congressman Weiner achieved, in terms of significant bills he sponsored and led, during his ten years in office?
Personally I don’t hate the man but I also do not think his being a loud mouth adds anything to effective public policy. I prefer people who speak softly but are focused on making real changes in public policy that benefit the people. We need more Politicians who get things done instead of loud mouth politicians who love to be on T.V.
As to whether he should or should not resign should be up to him and the people in his district. But I also understand why Democratic leaders are calling on him to resign. Right now he is an embarrassment to the party.

you’re absolutely right. his constituents will let him know whether he still has their support.
i fail to see, though, how he is an embarrassment to the party. to himself. yes. to his wife. yes. as a human. yes. but. face it. this happens to all kinds of people from all over the spectrum. always. it’s just faster and much more intense these days.
i’m perplexed by weiner’s behavior. did he not see what happens when something like this became public for someone else? and we all know it usually does become public.
and i’m saddened. the pictures themselves were sad. what compelled him to do any of it? sad. whenever anyone throws away even the potential of their future over something this….well…this sad…
i’m not sure, anyway, about what to do with the beginnings of real hatred, like the hate i’m developing for andrew breitbart.
i don’t want to be a, ahem, hater and i will resist as long as i can, but it seems that breitbart WANTS to be hated because he hates. it appears to be his defining characteristic. i’d rather have that loudmouthed weiner back, dirty pictures and all, than to have breitbart gain steam.
weiner is a sad man. breitbart’s just mean.

I don’t care if Weiner goes or stays and I don’t care that Dems are asking him to resign. He should have thought of this before engaging in incredibly stupid and reckless behavior. With that said, this poll is nonsense because the only thing these people know of Weiner is that he is a married congressman who sent dick pics to perfect strangers. They also know of the 17 yr. old even though it was innocent (he was so lucky it was innocent)and that his wife is pregnant. If that’s all I know about someone then of course I would disapprove of him.
And since it’s only up to Weiner’s constituents to decide if he should stay or go then the same should apply to Vitter. His constituents re-elected him.

If Weiner is more unpopular in the eyes of the people than other politicians who have/are doing damage to a state or country, then we no longer have a debate regarding the general stupidity of the American people. Most don’t have a clue.

Boy is that true. Naked pics worse than taking over the womb of a woman? Worse than the ryan plan? Worse than Walker, Scott and the rest?
You are right, there is a disconnect

If there is anything truly lame in this, it is how the news media are blowing it out of proportion. It takes up so much time on the national news, they hardly have time for cotton candy and cute little ducklings, let alone REAL news. I had to go to the BBC, Al Jazeera, Deutsche Welle, and France 24 to get not only serious world news, but to find out that the Senate(!) had unanimously confirmed Leon Panetta as Secretary of Defense, that the perjured Wisconsin Supreme Court had reinstated the anti- collective bargaining law, that the United States Supreme Court ruled that conflict of interest recusal requirements are not an impermissible restraint of speech and association, and that the Libyan insurgents have been able to break out of their stronghold in the western mountains and begin to advance on the capital. The focus of our media on fluff is an even greater threat to democracy than overt bias. And no, showing dirty pictures of oneself to consenting viewers one has never met over the internet is not adultery or “infidelity”, although it may be anything from vulgarity to lunacy. Let us get over these vaporous and expanding parameters to an offense that traditionally required one person’s physical contact with another person’s virilia or muliebria.

National approval is irrelevant. The majority of his constituents support him, and that is all that matters.
