Arrogant Boehner and McConnell Act Like They Won the Election
By: RmuseNov. 8th, 2012more from Rmuse
Most human beings have experienced the phenomenon of having the strong sensation that an event currently being experienced had been experienced in the past, and the French term, déjà vu, means something that is already seen. After the Democratic victory in Tuesday’s general election, one imagined there would be a grace period in which Republicans would allow Democrats to relish their victory while Republicans licked their wounded pride, but instead, leaders in the House and Senate issued statements that gave the appearance Republicans had won the election handily and put them in control of the government. Listening to Republican congressional leaders dictate compromise terms for President Obama to address the so-called fiscal cliff approaching in January gave any American with a memory an instantaneous feeling of déjà vu and it portends a continuation of the legislative standstill America suffered over the past four years.
Senate Minority Leader McConnell, the man who championed partisan gridlock during the President’s first term after vowing to prioritize making Obama a one-term president symbolized the Republican goal of precipitating suffering in order to claim electoral victory and unseat President Obama. McConnell commented on President Obama’s victory by claiming voters “gave President Obama a second chance to fix the problems he failed to solve during his first four years in office,” and said he hoped the President would “propose solutions that actually have a chance of passing Republican muster by stepping up to the plate and deliver in a way that he did not in his first four years in office.” Translation; follow Republican orders and propose GOP policies, and it was a clear indication Republicans have no interest in working with the President unless he acquiesces to Republican demands of gutting so-called entitlement programs and cutting taxes for the wealthy.
House Speaker Boehner congratulated the President and said, “If there is a mandate, it is a mandate for both parties to find common ground and take steps together to help our economy grow and create jobs, which is critical to solving our debt,” but in a news conference Wednesday morning he made it clear he had little intention of “taking steps together” or finding common ground to keep the President’s economic recovery moving forward. Boehner’s formula for bipartisanship was making it crystal clear that his vision for additional revenue includes a major overhaul of entitlements, eliminating middle class tax deductions, and reducing income tax rates for the rich from where it is now at 35 percent. Boehner claimed that additional revenue would come from economic growth that would be fueled by a simpler tax code, and if his formula sounds familiar it is no surprise because for the past three months Willard Romney and Paul Ryan proposed the same grand tax plan that Americans soundly rejected on Election Day. Boehner admitted he had no intention on compromising saying, “I’m not suggesting we compromise on our principles, but I am suggesting we commit ourselves to creating an atmosphere where we can see common ground when it exists and seize it.” Over the past four years common ground in Republican parlance is obstructing the President unless he follows Republican directions and makes Draconian cuts to safety nets and lowers taxes on the rich.
Democratic leaders and President Obama have said tax reform that lowers tax rates across the board hurts the middle class by trimming vital tax benefits like the home mortgage deduction, child tax credit, college tuition, and health insurance deduction, and would not raise enough taxes to meaningfully reduce the deficit. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid underscored the President’s contention that tax rates on the rich must be increased saying “the vast majority of Americans, including rich people” support that and the results of the election bear out Reid’s contention. Republicans still labor under the fallacious assumption that cutting taxes on the wealthy increases revenue in stark contrast to a report Senate Republicans have been desperate to conceal from voters.
In September, the Congressional Research Service released a report on marginal tax rates and the economy that noted there was no relationship between high tax rates and growth, productivity, income inequality, or other key economic indicators. The report certainly did not expose any new information, but it did disprove the perpetual Republican contention that tax cuts for the rich increases revenue and improves the economy. However, Republicans are demanding that President Obama and Democrats “compromise” in a spirit of bipartisanship by cutting taxes for the wealthy while gutting Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security as well as eliminate tax exemptions for the middle class. McConnell said that unless President Obama “wants to move to the political center,” there was little hope for the parties to work together.
For the President’s entire term he has governed from the center and Republicans obstructed every proposed compromise in their attempt to “make President Obama a one-term president.” Despite the President’s attempt to work with Republicans, unless he gives them everything they want, they have been intransigent on the economy and especially regarding tax cuts for the wealthy. Republicans are going to have to meet the President halfway, and he said on the campaign trail that he will compromise on budget cuts, but he was also very clear that very high income earners will have to go back to paying what they were during the Clinton Administration, and the American people overwhelmingly supported him on election day.
Apparently the Republicans did not get the message from voters that they support the President’s economic agenda and rejected Romney/Ryan’s tax plan that Republicans are proposing as a compromise. They also cannot accept the fact that the President did not win the election because he failed in his first term, but because he promised to continue growing the economy and reducing the deficit through a balanced approach and not cutting taxes for the wealthy or raising taxes on the middle class, slashing social safety nets, and making deep cuts to so-called entitlement programs. For the record, Social Security and Medicare are not entitlement programs when they are funded by worker contributions, and in Social Security’s case, does not take one penny from the government.
Republicans did not win the White House, or the Senate, and yet their concept of compromise and bipartisanship is dictating terms to the President and Democrats. It is a repeat of the past four years and definitely not what the American people voted for on Tuesday. They also did not vote for the Romney/Ryan tax plan and yet that is Republican’s offer and it portends more obstruction and gridlock that earned America its first credit downgrade and retarded economic growth and job creation.
McConnell said President Obama must meet Republicans in the political center, and that unless he makes more concessions they will not “do the work the people sent us here to do,” but the people did not send Republicans to dictate the terms of compromise and until the GOP acknowledges they did not win the election, Washington will remain at a standstill, and it really makes no sense because keeping the economy anemic will not make President Obama a one-term President any longer making one wonder if Republicans really do want to take America into a deeper recession than they did in 2008. Hopefully, Americans will not experience déjà vu as they watch Republicans crash the economy again by protecting the wealthy’s tax cuts and failing to compromise.

Deja vu indeed, but just because they sound like they did four years ago does not means we have to act now as we did then. We elected the President, congratulated ourselves on a job well done and went back to posting kitten pictures on Facebook. We didn’t have the President’s back and then we bitched like hell when he didn’t succeed as grandly as we had planned he would.
Now we know what these horrible people have in mind and our jobs are just beginning. We must put our senators, representatives, and the White House on speed dial – let them know what we expect, make them pay when they don’t give it to us and be gracious and appreciative when they do. A lot of the house members had close races and they will scare easily. Don’t give them a second’s chance to get their bearings and their confidence back. Job one is to start hammering Reid and every other Democratic senator about filibuster reform. Then we have taxes, the fiscal cliff, preserving entitlements. It is going to be a busy four years.

As much evil as there is in this country (and the world), I’m GLAD for the kitten pictures. They add a little cuteness and light to a dark and bleak existence.

“Now we know what these horrible people have in mind and our jobs are just beginning.”
YES!
Either the GOP has fallen victim to “mass hysteria” in the form of narcissistic projection, narcissistic undeserved and unearned self-confidence etc( include just about all symptoms of malignant narcissism i.e. mental instability)….
OR
They are behaving this way on purpose, with full knowledge of their own will.
EITHER WAY
we need to recognize that we are NO LONGER DEALING WITH POLITICS AS USUAL BUT WITH MENTALLY UNSTABLE GROUPS OF INDIVIDUALS who are in the throes of a forced paradigm shiftcausing them to feel as if the earth is shaking beneath their feet, that their very foundation of what they have always felt to be true is no longer real, is no longer there for them.
The resulting paradigm shift symptoms i.e. fearfulness, anxiety, paranoid delusions, desperate “flight or flight” mode etc etc are causing this aberrant behavior and IT IS ABERRANT BEHAVIOR.
Boehner and McConnel unable or unwilling to take a call from the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES BECAUSE THEY ARE SLEEPING????
WHAT DISRESPECT ! But worse, it shows how deeply rooted is their racism, bigotry, and lack of character that they cannot bring themselves to accept the fact that a black man is competent, wanted by the citizens, does not fit the stereotypical image of blacks and worst of all THEY, THE GOOD OLE WHITE BOYS, ARE NO LONGER THE SINGULAR HOLDERS OF POWER AND AUTHORITY.
I am furious when I see President Obama treated with SUCH OVERT AND PUBLIC DISRESPECT by men who are adults and who presume they too know how to lead.
But then I think of them. Boehner and McConnell.
My God ! How awful to wake up in the morning and be someone who has been beaten, twice, by someone who THEY have no respect for. To wake up and know that someone who YOU think is inferior is NO LONGER UNDER YOUR CONTROL.
What a rude awakening for them.
Evil is the only word I feel is…

I don’t think Obama ‘governed from the center” so much as he governed from concern. He said and meant that he is the president for all Americans, even these creeps. That said, nothing he did was for them alone, and nothing he did ‘caved’ to them. When he got the lame duck agreement – they got 14% and WE got 86%. We got the unemployment extension that had just been voted down, tax breaks for small business, investment credits instead of more “going out of business” credits, relief for families with kids in college and on and on and on. They gave away the store – we just let ‘em have two years of Bush tax rates. That is hardly “caving” as people have claimed. He horse traded – and it was to ordinary people’s deep advantage.
He worked minor miracles on many social issues. No one should ever discount what he gained not just through Congress but through clever uses of court rulings – those ended the Bush Doctrine on torture, indefinite detention, etc. – that were totally against the Bush plans and that were then never appealed to the Supreme court. Why? Once they were ruled upon as a loss for the government – the government accepted it totally and let those rulings stand.
On DADT and many other issues he just bided his time and got what he wanted. The GOP hates him because he’s made a fool of their posturing over and over. He has advanced his own slate of policies, not nearly at the rate he’d prefer, but advance them he has.
Now he has nothing to fear. Yes he will reach out. Everyone has a seat at the table in this administration, but not everyone walks away fed. Giving a hearing to special interests has NOT meant capitulating to them at all. He did not do it before. He will NOT do it now. His re-election and the wins by so many more progressive people is THE message. And he now has free rein by which to press the loser Baggers into doing the right thing. They could not beat him when they had strength – damned if they’ll get…

In my opinion, they do not care what people want or who was elected. Alan West’s demand that all the voting machines and ballots be impounded may be further than many are willing to go openly right now, but it reflects what they think: the ewepeople have no legitimate voice in how this nation is *ruled*, and they will not be content until they have silenced that voice forever. Be careful: this is the point where they may resort to extraconstitutional means.

This time around I hope that President Obama will simply call these Repiglicans out loud and clear every time they play these games. Shame them over and over and over. Let the American people know what he plans are, what they would create if implemented, then when blocked yet again by these arrogant pigs point the finger, middle and otherwise, right at them.
Over and over until the shame makes them heal.

I could not agree with you more.
President Obama needs to take the gloves off and realize this is a street fight.
The GOP has become a party that does NOT care what the country needs, is about, and they do NOT respect the fact that the citizens do NOT want them !
I dont want to sound extreme, but this is NOT politics as usual and the GOP has been taken over by extremest who feel what THEY believe should be forced on others, and that the result justifies the means.
I dislike making extreme statements, but I honestly feel this is a fight of good against evil and it is due to the paradigm shift exemplified by the historic election of our first black president.
I dislike comparing anyone to Hitler, but when GOP politicians publically show disrespect not only for our president but for the will of the people, when politicans knowingly lie —despite all evidence to the contrary—their actions and behavior constitute evil intent.
We have never had radicals like Iran, Iraq have radical muslims. We have never had politicans SO INTENTIONALLY DISPLAYING DISHONEST AND RACIST BEHAVIOR (SINCE THE DAYS OF SLAVERY ANYWAY) BUT
if we don’t open our eyes to the evil that is confronting us now, then WE are going to go through a forced paradigm shift when we see this kind of dishonesty on our political stage become more extreme ( to the point of violence???) as the RADICAL RIGHT goes further into their own mental instability and more desperate to force their religious views, their racist views, their bigot views on the rest of us.
We need a two party system.
The Republicans have got to take back their party and if they don’t they are just as responsible as those who have taken it over.

President Obama received a mandate on November 6th 2012 with 332 ECVs and 50.4% of the popular vote and possibly more once Fla completes its ballot counts.
R’thugs are playing games and demonstrating their hubris, they cannot and will not accept the fact that they lost. I’m reminded that in 2009 PO had to remind John McCain that he won due to his disrespect and acting as if he was the POTUS.
I don’t think PO will be taking any crap from these thugs this time around. The people gave him the vote and expects to see results that will even the playing field while moving forward on what he has accomplished so far.
R’thugs look out, you’re dealing with a different POTUS this time around, he doesn’t plan on taking off the gloves.

Democrats need to realize our jobs as citizens do not begin and end on election night. We must continue to fight. McConnell, Bohner and the Tea Party House are all misinformed. We voted for the President because the policy we saw the GOP offering would takes back in time, not just socially, but also economically. Now the GOP thinks it can force the Romney/Ryan plan on use, even though we voted against it. It is time to write Congress and tell them we are not going to take this. The GOP lost and we need to remind them of that fact everyday. The GOP will compromise or we will vote them out of office.

I guess the GOP isn’t going to figure anything out until the entire government is Democrat-governed. We just have to keep voting them out, over and over, til they’re all gone.

Unless the GOP is slaughtered in the 2014 elections, Obama’s re-election this week will have been for nothing. Nothing will get past the GOP dominated House, changes to the filibuster laws will be voted down and the USA will truly be in the same clusterf**k situation it has been for the last 4 years. Tax cuts for the rich, tax hikes for the ‘middle class’ and deductions obliterated. Start today, get them out of both houses if you want a brighter and stronger future.

Well, we elected the President, congratulated ourselves on a job well done and went back to posting kitten pictures on Facebook, but Congressional gridlock remains… I have the President’s back, I will be calling, emailing, and basically being a pain in the ass of OUR elected congressional representatives, until these S.O.B.’s DO THEIR JOB!!
These guys work for US, NOT BIG BUSINESS!!! and it’s time we started treating them LIKE THE EMPLOYEES THEY ARE!!
If you see what I see, and you feel as I do, then it’s time to get ALL PISSED OFF AMERICAN STYLE on them…
Get your elected officials contact information, and every time you hear of an issue, TELL THEM HOW WE EXPECT THEM TO VOTE!!!
Here is a sample of the email I just sent to the Republican reps for my district and it would be great if you could send them a note, too…
“Dear Sir, In regards to the Fiscal Cliff, I realize the President has nothing to lose, and I expect you to work in good faith with the President to hammer out a workable deal on this matter. If we, the working class suffer because of your partisan politics, we will not re-elect you. Thanks for your time…”

its sad that there hatred towards President Obama they are willing to destroy America just to get rid of him, people blame Obama for not doing enough but its this 2 idiots that should be blamed, the media should be allowed into Congress to cover every debate, this will show the public who the real idiots are and im sure many will change there view on President Obama once they see in there own eyes what the Republicans are doing, President Obama might had solve the Economic crisis had they helped and supported him all along but instead they tried to paint him as the worse President in history and make him a 1term President, i hope that there love for America help them work together instead of making things more difficult for the President, there’s still hope but it will only come if the Republicans stop being so arrogant/dumb and help the President.

President Obama is quite fortunate in one respect, even though the execution of this plan may cause a little hardship. He doesn’t need to do anything at all to raise taxes on the rich. All he has to do is let all the Bush tax cuts expire.
Then, after that has happened, he can send a bill reinstating all the tax cuts for everyone except the mega-rich. If Republicans refuse to pass it, all he has to do is go to the country and say, “They would rather fight for tax cuts for people like the Koch brothers and Donald Trump that give you a tax cut.”
It essentially puts Boehner, McConnell, Cantor and the others in a box. Eventually, they’ll have no choice but to agree — and the tax cuts for the middle class can be made retroactive to when they expired.

Boehner has a badly kept secret, he is not in control of his delegation. So either he can act sanely and the teaparty will flip him the bird and refuse to do whatever Boehner has worked out with the Senate and Obama, and show the country he is a Speaker in name only,or he can pretend the teaparty message is his own and at least continue to pretend he is in control. Either way without enough House members that will actually pay attention to what Boehner wants there will be no compromising from the House side

Since the election results did nothing to puncture the bubble of arrogance and ignorance they are cocooned in, the president needs to play hardball with them. In addition, every voter needs to let these fools know in uncertain terms that we voted against their obstructionism and their demands that the president capitulate to them. Since they are unreasonable and do not respond to logic or compromise, they do not deserve a second chance to throw Americans under the bus.
