Things Have Gotten so Bad for John Boehner that Even Hapless CNN is Fact Checking Him
John Boehner gave a press conference today that was so full of crap that even the ever clueless CNN was forced to fact check and call out his latest fiscal cliff BS.
Here is the video of Boehner:
Boehner armed with a shiny new chart, put together by no-numbers guy Paul Ryan, tried to fool America into not raising taxes on the wealthy while gutting Social Security and Medicare.
The Speaker said, “Unfortunately, the White House is so unserious about cutting spending that it appears willing to slow-walk any agreement and walk our economy right up to the fiscal cliff. Doing that puts jobs in our country in danger, it jeopardizes a golden opportunity to make 2013 the year that we enact fundamental tax reform and entitlement reform to begin to solve our country’s debt problem and, frankly, revenue problem. As you can see from this chart, real revenue growth is critically important as long as real cuts in spending if we’re going to resolve our long-term fiscal problem.”
Rep. Boehner continued, “As I said five weeks ago, the election wasn’t a mandate to raise tax rates on small businesses. It was a mandate for both parties to work together to take on the big challenges that our country is facing. Republicans are ready and eager to do just that. We made a reasonable offer, it’s now up to the White House to show us how they’re going to cut spending and give us the balanced agreement that the president has talked about for weeks.”
Right after Boehner finished speaking CNN went to Ali Velshi, who immediately fact checked the Speaker of the House and his dashing chart.
Video from Media Matters:
Velshi said,
It’s inaccurate. It really troubles me that he’s doing this. And he’s depending on a lot of inaccurate facts and it really trouble me that he’s doing this…hat he’s saying is — I’ve said it before, Ernst & Young needs to be very careful about allowing its name to be used for things like this because there is just nobody who corroborates this study. It doesn’t transfer. Because — everybody talks about small business as the engine of growth in this country.
Let’s set the record straight. Small business does not create more jobs than big business does in this country. End of story. It is a myth that we’ve started to believe. Small businesses create more of the new jobs in this country under normal circumstances than large businesses do. Because large businesses layoff tons of people and hire tons of people. Small businesses are more consistent. That is not to say we shouldn’t support small businesses. There is a myth that somehow — here is the other thing. The percentage of small businesses, which transfer their wealth through their personal income and hence have to pay income taxes, who would be affected by this increase —is a very small percent of businesses. And within that, the number of those that are actual real employers is yet substantially smaller. Most of those types of businesses are self- employed. They are partnerships, law firms, rock stars. They are not employers. So there is just no way you can get to that math that 700,000 people will be put out of work by an increase by the top 2 percent.
Fact checking? CNN? Really? Where has this been for the past three years? The same network that crawled into bed with the tea party, and watched their ratings nosedive, has now decided that they want to join the rest of us on planet Earth who have absolutely no idea what Republicans are talking about half of the time.
It’s amazing what getting a new boss is already doing to a network that had gotten way to comfortable with only getting ratings when a natural disaster strikes or an A list celebrity dies.
This could be sign of real change at CNN, but more likely it is proof positive that John Boehner is swimming so deep in the sewer that even utterly clueless by design CNN can’t ignore how completely full of bull Boehner is on this issue.
Just when Boehner thought things couldn’t get worse along comes the 97 lb weakling of cable news (CNN) to kick sand into his face. Boeher is so completely full of it that not even a colorful chart and talking points based on a widely debunked study can save him.
It is time for Boehner to pack it in, give Obama what he wants, and wash away his sorrows with a nice liquid Christmas. The longer they drag this drama out, the worse it gets for Boehner and the Republicans.
When even CNN gets it, the Republicans are super screwed.

He is between a rock and a hard place, because he’s damned with the Tea Partiers if he does what the president wants and damned by the majority of Americans if he doesn’t. But I don’t feel the slightest bit of sympathy for him because he and the other Congressional Republicans have painted themselves into a corner with their irrational obstinacy in trying to make Barack Obama’s presidency a failure.

Its about time that all Democratic legislators call the orange one out.Its not that he wont get a deal done its that he cant.Anytime his name come up just say he is a wuss not only that a drunken wuss who has no control of the teabagging imbeciles that make up his caucus. And I apologize to imbeciles because even they can be reason with.Off topic but what the American Taliban did to Susan Rice, making her withdraw her nomination should be the straw that broke the camels back.I say lets go thermonuclear on their traitorous asses. The hall is rented. The band has started playing. Now lets dance. As we used to say back in the day 3:15 your ass is mine.

Boehner is out and out full of it as usual, but Ali Velishi is playing his usual role as corporate sycophant and is ALSO wrong. The only thing that can really help the US economy is locally based small business jobs. I am NOT saying what Bohener is correct, however. Remember that the GOP is so centered on big corporations that they think that any company employing less than 2000 is a small business. They have no love of the small business owner and they only trot the phrase out to make themselves look good.
We need to encourage the REAL small business, the type with 25 or less employees. Corporations do not care about their country or their communities. They are on a continuous race to the bottom and they are constantly pulling up stakes. That’s not what the U.S>. need.
and small businesses do. An, sorry Ali, but when they are not being overrun by the Walmarts of the world they really do provide the real stable jobs for people in the US.
Boehner is centered on the CEO class, and so is Velshi. They’re both full of it.

The mendacity runs even deeper than what Ali Velshi said. The money that a large or small business keeps in the business to create jobs is NOT TAXED AS PERSONAL INCOME. By definition, the personal income tax only taxes the money that a business owner takes out of the business for personal use. The idea that an S-Corporation ends up being taxed on gross revenues is just completely false. An S-Corporation filing is a way of declaring the PROFITS from a business that are taken for personal use, and that is all.

She can recuse herself if there is a conflict of interest. She is more than qualified than mccain, lady lindsay and the rest of the gop.
This will cause the gop trouble down the road, especially for “No-MLKjr-holiday” mccain.

Everything said here about CNN is correct. They have bent over backwards in order to lure in clueless Tea Party/Fox viewers and have lost loyal viewers because of it. The GOP has gotten so out of touch and corrupt that even Tea Party-loving CNN has to attempt to call them on it.

Who’s paying Boehner to do this and why? This artificial distinction between government’s revenue and the people’s revenue is ridiculous when we have an apparently-sane Congressional leader trying to convince us that, somehow and in some way, the very poorest and most vulnerable of American society–the elderly, the poor, the disabled and the sick–should accept responsibility for the spendthrift ways of an outlaw presidency, Bush/Cheney, and the economic fraud of Wall Street. Repugnant and disingenuous, Boehner is.

Are you serious? You think every small biz is a rock star lawyer? Like my mom, that is working herself to death to keep her small biz afloat? My mom that raised two kids on her own, while trying to do this? She is rich, or marginal? So she doesnt matter? There are millions like her, struggling to stay afloat. Small biz owners dont get unemployment or disability. What are they supposed to do when taxes tank them? These taxes will hurt them, and in some cases push them over the edge. You sound like a callous jerk, or willfully ignorant and sensationally trying to misguide people.

Hey Orion, does your mom make $250,000 or more in PERSONAL INCOME from her business? Unless she takes home that much before taxes, then the only way she’s gonna get hit with a tax increase is if Boehner and co refuse to budge on a tax hike for the top 2%.
I should think that if your Mom is struggling so hard to keep afloat, and making $250,000 per year in personal income, she might want to pay herself a little less and reinvest some of the profits as a way of ensuring the continuing viability of her small business.

Agree. One thing though it’s the amount over $250,000 that will be attached to the tiny tax. It’s not calculated for inflation. These greedy nuts don’t want to pay for their damn wars.
Plus they got an extra free two years of not paying their fair share. Two percent isn’t close to their fair share.

The Government should not be allowed to touch Social Security and Medicare. It belongs to the people who have worked and paid into it. Not the Senate or House who do not pay into the fund. They have no right to include it in the budget negotiations as it does not affect the deficit.

Or, we have a taxing problem where we are not collecting enough tax to cover spending. Or, we have BOTH!!! Boehner has got to be one of the worst presenters I have ever seen. Not convincing. Look, look at my chart, spending is the problem, see it says so right here. Dumb

I really don’t think Boehner believes what he’s trying to sell to the public. This colourful Ryan’s chart looks much like his budget which he couldn’t explain or defend and is just a another dumb idea from the R’thugs. Can’t wait for Paul Krugman’s take on it.
Guess they don’t believe in polls that don’t favour them considering how many polls have shown Americans, Dems, INDs and Reps wanting tax increases on the rich while keeping SS and Medicare/caid off the table.

The Defense Budget is approximately $250 Billion a year higher than when Clinton was President. If $100 Billion a year were cut from Defense, $1 trillion would be saved in 10 years. The wars fueled the National Debt, adding $3 Trillion over the past 12 years.

Of course, old habits die hard; Velshi couldn’t stop himself from pushing the notion that President Obama hasn’t offered specific cuts. He has, they’re just not the cuts that Boehner wants. Still, this is progress for CNN.

Good morning Hsquared:
Exactly! Isn’t it odd that when the GOP wants funding for anything, they can justify it, one way or another. If, however, the programs or initiatives have their etiology within the Democratic Party, then all bets are off, and they protest under the guise of fiscal responsibility.
Yet, and here is the key point: I do not recall government decreasing under any single modern day GOP President. Not one! It seems to me, at least, that the GOP is similar to the proverbial sailor as they go out on a spending binge when in office, and then scream for fiscal responsibility when they lose control of the White House or Senate.
Interestingly, the electorate, “We the People,” the very folks the Tea Party consistently reminds their supporters of never underestimating, have spoken, and despite this, they want to act as though the election never occurred. Apparently, they are still deluding themselves into believing the electorate re-elected this President due to extrinsic reasons, sans “Superstorm Sandy,” or “Governor Chris Christie’s complimentary nature,” or “because the President provided supposed ‘gifts’ to those who voted for him,” with the list going on to ad absurdium.
What the GOP is neglecting to understand is this: While mid-term elections usually do not attract progressive voters, for them to continue on their same path shall end only in their peril as they get voted out of office in 2014. However, denial is their current “drug of choice,” and I sadly say the following: While their tactics sicken me, they are apparently working to some extent, as the recent WSJ poll reflects now 60% of Americans will blame both the President and the GOP should they fail to reach an agreement.
I say this for two reasons: First, either the polling is not accurate, or, the polling reflects a problem within our progressive movement. Our President should not be compromising on ANYTHING, since he was re-elected with what can only be…

Mandate?? He thinks the election was a MANDATE for the Democrats to work with him? It was more of a mandate for all the republicans to simply shut the f up !
Dr. Mark Bear
Dec. 14th, 2012 at 9:25 am
For the GOP Speaker of the House to come out yesterday and imply that the sole problem is spending, is not only disingenuous, but also misleading.
First, the GOP continues to deny the results of the election, acting as though the American people experienced nothing but a “status-quo” election, when in all reality, the previous election was nothing short of historical due to the President being the first candidate since Reagan, to garner over 50% of the vote on both bids. To be clear: The ONLY reason the House went to the GOP is due to the GOP State led legislatures redistricting their states for a more favorable outcome.
Second, while spending IS of concern, nearly every leading economist will tell you that when confronted with the current economical picture, the necessity of stimulating the economy becomes greater, lest we fall back into a recession. In a similar vein, this strategy worked when President Clinton was in office, and no reason exists whereas it will not work now.
Third, even though former President Clinton led one of the strongest economic booms in history, the GOP marginalized this accomplishment by attributing his success to the dot com boom. That is, Clinton was lucky! It is for this reason that the GOP will never agree to increase the rates on the upper two percent.
When Clinton attempted to increase rates on the wealthy, all we heard was how the economy would fall apart, but it didn’t! When it didn’t, it was due to Clinton supposedly benefiting from the dot com boom. But here is the reality: Should the tax rates be raised as the people of this country want, evidenced by the recent election, the GOP will have no dot com boom to attribute the growth of the economy to.
This would mean the GOP’S arguments regarding supply-side economics will be exposed as the failure they are and ALL Americans will know, once and for all, that the GOP would rather protect the wealthy while throwing the middle-class under the bus! GOP = Grinches…

A mandate is commonly construed as being a directive by the electorate to do as they desire. It appears to me that because Republicans lost seats in the House, lost seats in the Senate and lost the Presidential race, Boehner has come to the conclusion that these three facts constitute a ‘mandate’ for Republicans to be part of the overall mandate. Seriously? What a ‘maroon!’
Dr. Mark Bear
Dec. 14th, 2012 at 9:45 am
Good morning Ken,
You are 100 percent accurate regarding the mandate this President has been awarded by our electorate. And, I might add, the House “would have been” under Democratic Party control, had it not been for the GOP State led legislatures to engage in their redistricting efforts, as a way of attempting to control the outcome of this most recent election!
They have done nothing but obstruct, obstruct, and continue obstructing this President. But what they neglect to understand, at their own risk, is that it seems as though the American people have awakened to this very fact, and want no part or affiliation with a party that places their political calculations above the good of our country!
Finally, for the Speaker to insinuate that this President has not taken things seriously regarding the “fiscal cliff,” only to turn right around and send the House home for recess after only working two days, is appalling. The only people, it seems to me, who are not taking the matter seriously is the Speaker’s own caucus, whom he cannot get control of.

HAHAHA. President Obama already told boehner he wasn’t choosing what to cut from the disadvantaged, the sick, the elderly and children. He said gop can make those choices. President Obama isn’t playing their silly immature dangerous game. The man isn’t having it.
Also boehner is wrong about everything. he isn’t listening to the people. he doesn’t get it. he looks like an idiot by saying the same wrong things over and over again as if he is romney.
he’s dead wrong about President Obama’s mandate. boehner should stop drinking seriously, like yesterday. President Obama has a big fat mandate. the gop has no mandate besides they did NOTHING for “The People” for the last four years. And for eight years before that.
I guess boehner hasn’t seen his low congressional approval rating. And the high approval rating of the President’s.
You are so right they aren’t facing reality. I feel they never will.
