Bernie Sanders Is The First US Senator To Support Occupy Wall Street
On Countdown With Keith Olbermann, Sen. Bernie Sanders became the first US Senator to voice his support for Occupy Wall Street.
Here is the video:
Sen. Sanders said about Occupy Wall Street, “What I appreciate about what’s going on in New York right now is that there is a spotlight being focused on Wall Street. We desperately need that. If we are going to get out of this recession, if we’re going to create the millions of jobs we desperately need, we need real Wall Street reform. A lot of people don’t know this, you have six financial institutions the largest six banks in the country who control sixty percent of the assets in the United States of America. After we bailed them out because they were too big to fail, three of the four largest financial institutions actually became bigger.”
He continued, “If we are going to create a situation where capital is going to flow into the productive economy, into manufacturing, into rebuilding our infrastructure, into transforming our energy system, rather than continuing the casino type games that Wall St. is playing right now, we need a lot of pressure on Wall Street, no question about that.”
Sen. Sanders said focusing attention on Wall Street is exactly the right thing to do. Later America’s favorite Socialist had a message for the Occupy Wall Street protesters, “My message is reach out to working people. Reach out to the unions, reach out to the middle class bring people together demanding real Wall Street reform, so that the function of Wall Street is to provide capital to the productive economy , create jobs that we desperately need rather than continue to engage in speculation and casino type activities, i.e. real real Wall Street reform.”
Sanders said that he would try to attend the protest on October 6 in Washington, D.C. Host Keith Olbermann said that Bernie Sanders is one of the few public officials who will speak about this, and to the best of my knowledge, he is the first U.S. Senator to publicly come out in support of the Occupy Wall Street protests.
It is no surprise that Sen. Sanders is the only member of the Senate so far to support the protests. From January 2009-March 2010, big banks and Wall Street spent $500 million on lobbying and campaign contributions to derail real financial reform and consumer protections. The Senate is infested with Wall Street cash. This is why real financial reform and Elizabeth Warren’s Consumer Financial Protection Agency had no chance.
The fact that Washington D.C. is polluted with Wall Street dollars is exactly why these protests are so important. A popular rebellion is the only way that the American people are ever going to take their democracy back from the moneyed interests. People must demand that their dollars be spent where they are needed instead of circulating through the Wall Street/Washington Money Laundering Machine. Unless we the people demand more, we are certain to get less.
Sen. Sanders should not only be a guest at the Washington rally. He should be a featured speaker. The Occupy Wall Street protests have a chance to spread freedom’s message beyond Madison and into every part of this country. It is time for the left to come together behind this common cause. Join Bernie Sanders and Occupy Wall Street in liberating our country from the grasp of corruption and greed.

Senator Sanders is a man after my own heart. He has always been forthright about speaking up for everyday people, and his support for this protest is highly encouraging. I only hope he won’t be the last Congressmember to speak up.

The majority of Sanders’ campaign contributions are from individuals(88%) and unions. There’s no corporate campaign money to be made when your someone like Bernie, that’s why there’s so few politicians like him out there.

And the GOP wholeheartedly supports the cheating and the speculation that is costing Americans millions. Its unbelievable. If this were tricky Dicks day, Boehner and Cantor would be up on charges and standing next to Benedict Arnold.
I hope Bernie gets involved. He has no problem stating what is going on. As long as the rest of the Dems are hiding under their desks (with a few exceptions)Bernie needs to speak as loud as he can and we need to listen.

The corporations own the cops and don’t care a fig for Bernie Sanders any more than they do for the young women who were pepper-sprayed. I’m sure there are (some very confused) cops who would welcome the opportunity to pepper-spray Senator Sanders.
Poor confused cops. They think Wall Street is on their side.

Sanders, Warren, and Grayson are probably the three most honest people around. I hope Grayson returns to Congress, and I hope Warren beats Brown too. We need real ethical people in Congress, not the bought and paid for in the current crop of losers.

what is wanted is the credit card companies to stop ripping you off, this oil speculators to stop cranking the price of oil and gasoline out of sight needlessly and for Wall Street to stop stealing everyone’s retirement funds. It has nothing to do with tax.

Shocking a self-avowed socialist is teaming up with treasonous marxists, communists and unionistas. Wait, no it’s not.

so are you are saying that people who lose their retirement because of Wall Street, have their bank accounts plundered with fees, a tremendous amounts of money for gasoline that they shouldn’t have to pay and watch the retirements disappear are treasonous Marxist communists and unionistas?
and the charges above barely scratch the surface. I think what you are saying is that you support corruption in any form that you can find

Sen. Sanders is performing in his role fronting as some kind of “alternative” to republicans or democrats in order to ensure that movements fail; he’ll need to be monitored to make sure that his “support” brings useful publicity to Occupy wall st. & does not de-rail Occupy wall st.
Sanders ran a hustle at the end of 2010 by delivering a mock filibuster the day before the vote to extend the bush/Obama tax cuts for the wealthy was passed. The statements made by Sanders in his mock filibuster were correct, but he didn’t have the decency or courage to deliver his address during the debate/vote process, which would have made his remarks an actual filibuster that could’ve delayed or pre-empted the vote as filibusters are intended to do & sometimes succeed at doing.

Article 4 section 4 of the Constitution prescribes that “the United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican form of Government.”
When will you people find out we are not a democracy?

1- by definition, we are a both. art 1 sec 2 allows for this, and article 1, sec 8 says they should act like it. now, if we start using the power of educated voting, the disparity between the two will lessen.

Bravo, Senator Sanders! You are truly the only member of the Senate with the guts to speak out for the people! What kind of Democratic Party leadership is there when none of you are coming out in support of the greatest expression of American freedom? Who are you and what have you done with the Democratic Party?

Excellent video and commentary by the venerable Bernie Sanders – one important note must be made, however:
The struggle is not between left and right:
it’s between democracy and corporatism -
We must unite the people, or the people and democracy both will lose
Not only are partisan loyalties and divisions increasingly irrelevant and out-moded, but divisions along ideological lines of left and right are also outmoded and largely obsolete. The major parties function as rubber-stamp agencies, spin doctors and propagandists for the same ruling corporate elite, as the majority of people are now very aware. Romney and Obama, the Republicans and the Democrats represent two wings of the same corporate-run machine. Supporting a lesser of two evils is no longer tenable or conscionable, if it ever was. Likewise, ideological factions and ideological partisanship and divisions will only impede us from the task at hand. The task is to unite the people so that they can reclaim their democracy and their future. If we fail to understand this most crucial point, then we have lost before we have begun, and nothing of significance will be accomplished, save for the familiar chanting of “We’re in the right! You’re wrong! (Or evil, or stupid, etc.)” – while the world and our future continues to burn. On this most central point we must be perfectly clear, or we will see no change for the better, but only a continued accelerating slide into a dark age of neo-feudal corporatism, the complete and final destruction of democracy and human rights, further environmentally suicidal behaviour, and a two-tiered society of corporate rulers and pillaged underclass.
The old battle lines of right and left are no longer as relevant today as they once were. The primary struggle is not between right and left, but between the vast majority of the people who support and favour constitutional democracy, be they liberal, conservative or progressive, and the ruling corporate elite and super-rich one percent who have usurped far too much power, and have come to dominate the economy, the media and the political process. What is needed is for the people to reclaim their power and their democracy. In order for that to be achieved, it is absolutely necessary that the people unite.
Everyone who favours constitutional democracy over rule by the corporate elite, or any kind of elite, must unite now, in order that democracy can be reclaimed by the people. Once the people have reclaimed their democracy, then we can discuss and debate everything under the sun, democratically, and go from there. Until we have reclaimed our democracy from the corporate elite who now dominate economy, the media and the political process, the point is moot, for we are stone-walled.
If we wish for justice, for peace, for environmental sanity, for human rights and constitutionally protected civil liberties, or for prosperity and well-being for all, then we must above all, and before anything else, reclaim our democracy: and in order to do that, the people will have to unite.
What has been said before is entirely and extremely relevant now: “We must all hang together, or assuredly, we shall all hang separately. United we stand, divided we fall.” (Benjamin Franklin) If the people do not unite, they will be unable to reclaim their democracy from the corporate elite who have usurped it; and if the people do not reclaim their democracy, then there will be an even darker time ahead for the people and for the world. These are the simple facts which we now face.
Reclaim democracy. Unite the people now.
