Bernie Sanders Slams the GOP Plan to Reduce the Deficit by Cutting Veterans Benefits
In a conference call with reporters today, Sen. Bernie Sanders alerted the American people to the Republican (and some Democrat support) plan to reduce the deficit by cutting veterans benefits.
The change that would bring about the cuts would be a switch in the calculation of COLAs for federal benefit programs like Social Security from the current system to a chained Consumer Price Index (CPI). On the surface, the change seems small. Business Insider explained the Chained CPI, “The C-CPI assumes that consumers are making different choices right now. Because of the economic down-turn, they’re substituting cheaper products for the ones they used to buy (say, going for the cheaper apple versus a more expensive peach at the supermarket, or buying cat food instead of ground beef). It presumes that consumers are effectively changing the real CPI number. Using the C-CPI, rates would re-calibrate every two years according to a reading of consumer spending. And since Social Security is linked to the CPI, it has the potential to reduce social security payments…Since spending on government programs (like social security) will be calculated based on C-CPI (as they are now on CPI), their cost will go down, and people’s benefits will be cut.”
In short, Republicans are trying to push through a benefit cut to veterans, the disabled, and seniors by disguising it as a tweak to the system. Sen, Sanders told reporters, “We do not honor our disabled veterans by cutting their benefits. In my view in this country means anything it means we keep the promises we make to the people who put their lives on the line to defend us.”
Sanders pointed out that under the CPI, a disabled veteran who starts receiving benefits at age 30 would see those benefits reduced by $1,300 a year by the time they reach age 45. This isn’t a one time cut. The cuts would build on each other and get deeper as the recipient ages. To put it another way, people who already have their earning potential limited by age or disability would see their only or main source of income erode over time. The vast majority of these individuals won’t have the ability to make up their lost income through work, so they will sink deeper into poverty.
The move to a Chained CPI is part of Simpson-Bowles and it is being championed by right wing billionaire/anti-Social Security zealot Pete Peterson.
Sen. Sanders said that 99% of Americans have no clue that a Chained CPI would lead to cuts for veterans and Social Security. The good news is that Sen. Sanders has picked up a powerful ally in this fight. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has already warned Republicans and a few Senate Democrats not to mess with Social Security. Reid said Social Security should not be part of any deficit reduction plan.
Since the Republicans lost the election, they are going to try to kill earned benefits by seniors and veterans through back door cuts like the Chained CPI.
First, Senate Republicans voted against a job creation program for veterans, before sneaking out of town. After a break for the election, these same Republicans are getting set to return to Washington to resume their fiscal assault on veterans through more deceptive means.
As Sen. Sanders put it, we shouldn’t balance the deficit on the backs of people who lost an arm or a leg and risked their lives for their country. The people who serve our country too often come home with their lives forever changed by war. Our promise to them must be kept. We also made a promise to seniors and the disabled that the benefits that they have paid into, will be there for them.
There are better ways to cut the deficit than on the backs of the veterans, the disabled, and seniors. Romney and Ryan may have lost the election, but the idea that the rich should be asked to do nothing while the poorest among us gives more lives on the Republican congressional caucus.
Even though the election is over, the battle rages on. The fight to keep our promises has just begun. The victory that was achieved in the ballot box must be transformed into a defense and expansion of the values that are held dear.
Congratulations, on winning an election.
The corporate billionaires and plutocrats haven’t rested, so the people must come together once again to stop them.

Why do the republican hate the military veterans so much?
They send them in harms way at the drop of a hat, but have no conscience in voting down the deployment pay as they did in 2003 by $180.00 per month, and they have not re-instated that.
Then in addition have voted down the Vets training program last session.
And now they want to cut their future benefits.
This is immoral!
It has to be demoralizing for the man & women who pay so much for this country’s wars, not only in pay cuts, but in time away from their families and exposed to all sorts of dangesr physical and emotional.
The GOP has members in the military, what about them. Do they not count either? are the military only props for photo oportunities?
Oh wait, John McCain does not care about benefits, he has made his millions already, but he is ready to vote to send the Armed forces everywhere.
The military goes everywhere and work 24/7, only to be defeated by their own representatives. With those representatives, who needs enemies…

The republicans don’t hate veterans. After all, militiary veterans vote greater than 50% of the time for republicans. It’s that the republicans don’t care if their policies cause suffering. Their attitude is that if you are suffering it’s your own fault. The republicans don’t seem to understand cause and effect. It’s greed and desire among a small part of the population that causes suffering among the many.

As an old disabled veteran, I can say that the extra $50 a month in their figured COLA/CIA/CAT, that will show up in my 100% ratings check won’t upset me much.
Many veterans returning from the newer warring need more.

For the forty some years I’ve been classified as a combat disabled veteran (service connected) the Republicans in Congress and Presidents Reagan and Bush 43 have treated veteran’s benefits not as entitlements from a grateful nation for the sacrifice we who served made but instead they’ve attempted to stigmatize them as welfare style handouts. Republicans – first in line to host a parade sending the sons and daughters of others off to get mangled or die in defense of their wealth, and first in line to moan and groan that when those sons and daughters return harmed and wounded they cost too much.

As a 100% Disabled Vet and i am not surprised. Everytime I turn around they want to cut Vet benefits. The V.A. is horribly underfunded already . I’m from California and the cost of living alone eats up my compensation pay.my quality of life ? There’s no quality in my life.I never had a chance . Life was ruined at 19 and the Government has harassed me with this threat since .

My heart goes out to you and everyone else whose life has been upended in such a horrible and irreversible way so early in life. My eldest male cousin on my mother’s side fought in Vietnam and the emotional trauma he suffered was permanent. There are many other veterans who have been physically and psychologically crippled in the course of their service to this country, but the GOP cares nothing about that. No amount of election defeats, from presidential on down, seems to bring about reflection or cause them to show any humanity. Since they persist in practicing the very policies that led to the loss of the White House and an increase in Democratic senators, the president needs to play hardball with them. The fact that they call things like Medicare, veteran’s benefits, and Social Security
“entitlements” says a lot about them. Somehow, they don’t see the exorbitant tax breaks for the rich as entitlements.

This is the agenda of the Republican party. Give huge tax cuts to the rich who don’t need them and take those cuts off the backs of seniors and vets. I wonder how the GOP ever gets the vote of anyone but the top 1% of the wealthiest in this country. They have no heart or soul, and all they care about is keeping their money and enlarging their bank accounts even more. They don’t seem to care who they take the money from, and after they destroyed the middle class, they are fine with coming after the most vulnerable. They are everything Jesus warns us against and how people can believe they are Christians is yet another con they put over on the American public.

Americans must understand to the upper class republicans, veterans are a throw away class of people. We are no longer needed and to help us is a aggrevating headache to the Republicans. They consider themselves superior and we average Americans are just low class workers that are only valuable when needed to make their lives more comfortable. The aristrocrat republicans are so very superior to us (they truly believe) and the fact the country is not totally ruled by white, rich, superior class males is totaly intolerable to them… signed, A disabled veteran.

As usual Bernie is acting in the best interests of the American people. I would like to know who the Democrats are that are supporting such a bill. This need to be put on notice by all of us who provide them with a pay check. If they want to cut anyone’s pay, they can do their own and the upper 1 per centers. Shame on all of them for even the thought of this.

I say we start a national movement to create national legislation where We the People stipulate what congressman/women earn, and if they cannot advocate for us, We the people, then we will decrease their pay and benefits. Right now there is no consequence for acting in the interest of the rich. They will hurt anyone to ensure that the rich continue to get the biggest share of the pie they call welfare.

My 89 year old Father, (who passed away recently), a World War II Veteran, had said for years that the Republicans were trying to take down the middle class. They’ve all but accomplished this and now, they are going after the Veterans, Disabled & Seniors, who can no longer work to make up for the losses of income. Those living in poverty, (through NO fault of their own), should not have the greedy Republicans pushing them further down than they already are. God Bless those that fight for our rights that had been promised to us. It’s not a handout! We put into the system that was set up as a safety net…now, they’re trying to take the net away.

When will these people get that it is patently unfair to repair the deficit solely on the backs of the poor, elderly, veterans, and low/middle income workers. Suck it up, eliminate pork barrel spending, waste and fraud, and stop feathering the nests of those wealthy enough to afford lobbyists. Why the hell should the social security tax not be extended to ALL income, so that everyone pays on 100% of what they earn, no matter how high their income goes. Interesting that there’s a photo circulating on Facebook of Papa John’s mansion (with a moat, for gosh sake), and he’s complaining that because Pres. Obama was re-elected, he might have to lay off workers because their health insurance would cost fourteen cents more per hour for each employee. That’s the level of greed that corporate America has descended in to. Disgusting.

Contact your Senators and Representatives and tell them “NO!” Veterans, Seniors and working poor have paid enough – it is time for those 1% people, many who receive millions of our tax dollars, in one way or another, to start paying back into the system by paying their fair share!

That being said, then why in the hell can’t the GOP HONOR the CONTRACT that we signed? As a diabled Vet, and also drawing Social Security Disablty, I (like others) payed my dues in wars that you are so quick to start, but slow to join. You want to keep your jobs, go after those who dumped millions behind Romney, they can afford it better than we can.

The GI Bill is Democratic Lesislation.
I will repeat that for those that do not understand what that means!
“The GI Bill is Democratic Lesislation.”
Had no Positive Republican influence at all.
Created by FDR and was rejected by every Republican, it passed by (1) Vote. Check for yourself.
Democrats have the best interests of Veterans at Heart. In spite of those that reject Democratic Policies… Democrats realize that many are not at a point in their lives where experience, education and wisdom guides their thought process.
The GI bill was designed to assist veterans to get along in society.
Republican Policies have cut Veterans Benefits through the years placing it under their “Social Program Cuts” Umbrella.
If you despise Democrats and policy so much then you should return and not accept any GI Bill benefits.
If not then you don’t have to thank a Democrat but at least be smart and respectful enough to know who is looking out for you!
I am a Veteran, my Dad was in the 101st in Korea, my brother served and my uncle.
We were all proud to serve out Country.
