Big Bird, Elmo, and Cookie Monster Protest Romney in Iowa
Mitt Romney was greeted in Iowa by protest sign carrying versions Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Elmo, Cookie Monster, and Bert and Ernie affiliated with the group Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement.
Here is the video via The Des Moines Register:
The protesters sang the Sesame Street theme song, called on Romney to release his tax returns, talked about the 47%, and called companies like Romney’s Bain Capital the real parasites. Romney supporters haplessly tried to drown out the protesters and hold up Romney signs to block the cameras.
Romney’s comments about Big Bird and cutting off the federal subsidy to PBS have caused an uproar, and have become the unexpected takeaway moment from the first presidential debate.
The Obama campaign picked up the ball and ran with it with a new campaign ad featuring Romney and Big Bird.
The Sesame Workshop has stayed out of the political fray, but since they are on PBS, it is common sense where their sympathies reside.
Romney’s Big Bird comments have caught on because the reinforce the perception held by many voters that Romney is a heartless corporate raider who is only looking at the bottom. Those inside the Beltway don’t seem to get the fact that Obama campaign is using the Big Bird comments to define Romney. Big Bird isn’t a new direction for the campaign. It is the latest chapter in Obama’s narrative about Romney’s character, or lack of.
The fact that Mitt Romney sees no value beyond monetary in spending taxpayer money on PBS, reinforces the idea that Romney can’t grasp the concept of the public good. To the Republican nominee, PBS is nothing more than an asset to be sold off to the private sector.
Mitt Romney has a Big Bird problem, and the perception of his heartlessness towards children along with the protests won’t be going away any time soon.

This might sound slightly conspiratorial, but, over time, many many non-native English speakers have learned English by watching Sesame Street. Who knows, but maybe trying to eliminate Elmo, Big Bird, Oscar, et al, has more to do with keeping those same
non-native English speakers from learning English. The GOP wants to eliminate Spanish from all documents printed by the Federal government. Who knows? Since the recent bogus “voter fraud” efforts in many states and the GOP trying to make English the “official” language, one major option to learning English would be to gunned-down our English-teaching furry friends who live on the “street”. Make sense? You decide.

President Obama needs to quit with the stupid big bird stunt/story. It makes him look small minded and petty, there are many real reasons why Romney will be dangerous if elected, the President needs to voice these concerns, not joke about Big Bird, President Obama is starting to really hurt himself, he needs to be Presidential, not goofing over some stupid comment, Romney made. There is no reason why President Obama did so poorly in the debate, he should have been able to destroy Romney with all the lies, Romney is known to have said, instead he let every single lie stand, and 70 million people were left thinking, well maybe, Romney won’t be so bad as President. The President won’t get many more chances to prove Romney’s a liar in front of millions of voters, he really needs a wake-up call. I hope Romney kicking his ass, all over the debate floor, woke him up, because he is really not showing the world what a true piece of @#%$, Romney is. This election is the Presidents to lose if he does not get fired up and and let the people know, Mitt is a man completely out of touch with normal people, and will enact policies that will end the social safety net, this is a fact. President Obama could win on this issue alone. Well enough bitching for me, I hope everybody is smart enough to see though Romney’s lies, and vote for the man who wants to help America, President Obama.

First, I must admit I didn’t watch the debates. I don’t need to and Romney turns my stomach so badly that it would have been counterproductive (and I have too much to do anyway).
That being said, my wife DID watch, and her comment was that President Obama played by the rules and used a lot of self-discipline. She admired how he was. Romney, on the other hand, broke the rules for the debate over and over again.
People don’t seem to catch on that Romney ignores the rules unless they give him an advantage. Imagine what sort of presidency THAT would bring about.
(Nixon will seem like a Piker compared to Romney!)

I noticed, in fact, the strong resemblance Romney evinced to Nixon in expression, gesture, and vocal intonation, and he lacks even so much respect for law and custom as Nixon ever evinced. But his character is not so empty as I had thought: it is filled with vanity and malice both. Indeed, others may pull his strings, but not in such a way that he knows it. What would he be?

Do not fear, my friend…
I believe President Obama was letting Myth Romney expose himself as “The Fraud He Is”…
This will get everyone talking about how Romney is a pathetic Liar, which in turn will make it ok for President Obama to unleash on him.
I think President Obama is playing Romney like a fiddle…
Before long I expect to hear Romney squealing like a pig !!

I know. I felt the same way. I mean we do need to save PBS so we do need to make mention of these characters. Wally is right though..just another step to take away any form of education to keep the people stupid so they can vote GOP. They truly are a bunch of hitlers. And they are real good at what they do when it comes to their lies. Either that or their constituency are incredibly gullible idiots. I mean they really really are a mean bunch of WHITE-money-hungry-power-hungry-dying-to-see people-suffer men …exactly like hitler and his people who followed. The GOP is one uncivlized party. When the austerity they want starts? They will not suffer..WE WILL! All joking aside. PEOPLE SHOULD BE VERY VERY CONCERNED. Especially those on the right. When they vote..and if by chance vote for Romney all of us will suffer NOT JUST YOU. All because of a bunch of stupid GOP CONSTITUENTS who love to hate will make us all suffer like you will never imagine. That AMERICA THEY KEEP CRYING ABOUT? is the slavery and degradation of all races but WHITE RICH CORPORATIONS AND THEIR OWNERS AND FAMILIES..THE ROMNEYS! DON’T BE STUPID VOTE OBAMA 2012! Please. If you are a RW white constituent you are worth nothing to them but minimum wage. And thats why they’ve keept you down all these years. Stupid enough to believe their every word. Its clearly working in red states.

The dynamic duo of Romney and Ryan would drive the entire economy into a nose dive as long as it benefits the richest Americans. They’ll even destroy our beloved Big Bird and anything government-funded which stands in the way of making the rich richer. Income inequality is endangering the Middle Class and making paupers of us all who don’t have those millions upon millions of dollars. Read more about the role of Romney’s riches in this election and the power of his sacred undergarments at dregstudiosart.blogspot.c... The working class of our country can’t AFFORD to allow this election to be bought and sold!

Of course, this whole thing is serious. However, it’s getting more and more surreal, like “Mary Jane’s” presence is ever nearer…

Here’s a few idea’s for Big Bird signs…
Romney sez he luvs me, gonna kill me. Sure glad I’m not part of that 47%.
Don’t be chicken mitt, show those tax returns.
If Mitt paid his fair share, I’d be fine.
Mitt & taxes R like foxes & henhouses.
Killing Big Bird, PBS and the 47% video are about the only things I believe from mitts mouth.
Romney/Ryan are so generous they would take the shirt off your back.
That Romney sure thinks Big, oh, wait !
Romneys next big thing to tackle will be to eliminate the $3.00 deduction on our 1040′s. The one for presidential campaigns.
I think Mitts eggs R a little scrambled.
4 Q and the horse U danced in on.
Mitt gonna eliminate hen house mortgage deducions next?
Mitt the twit will be taxing your eggs before U know it.
Beware of The Mitt… Chicken today, Feathers tommorrow.
Hey Mitt, Quit choking the chicken and show your tax returns…
Don’t kill me, offshore me to the Cayman Islands or Switzerland.
Save Sesame Street, Install parking meters at the White House driveway instead.
Hey Mitt, eat mor fish.
Feel free to tweet away.

Although the Big Bird/Sesame Street reference might sound a little hokey, it actually is pretty effective in that the Muppets resonates a lot with many people, not just children who watch it now, but generations of adults who grew up watching it (I was of age when the program just came out).
I don’t know how Romney came up with that zinger, but it was foolish on his part. People will be remembering this for years and years afterwards.

The Sesame Street narrative is not petty and small-minded…it perfectly illustrates why we’d be extremely stupid to vote Mittens and Munster into the White House and the GOP back into complete Congressional power. Cutting funding to a program that makes up 1/100th of one percent of the federal budget is equal to the old saying “penny wise and pound foolish”. If Mittens, Munster and their party were really concerned about the debt, of which they’re mostly responsible (90%), they’d reverse the Reverse Robin Hood fiscal policies that cost this country nearly $750 billion annually. That’s how much the Bush 43 tax cuts and the corporate welfare programs cost per year, including debt servicing. And, they’d also cut defense spending by about $100 billion annually. But, in the GOP’s world, deficits only matter when a Democrat is President. When a Republican is President, it’s “good fiscal policy”.
